4. You're suddenly having a moment of panic. This is real. This is too real. You are now face-to-face with the deadly menace that has killed so many. The silver strands wind and twist and reach out for you, and you suddenly find yourself filled with doubt and worry. Can you do this? Why are you up here? What about all those that failed? How can you do this for the rest of your life -- a life that could well be cut short!?! Thankfully, while you are having a moments panic, your dragon seems to know what to do--especially when the lurch to the side and dive to flame down a few patches of Thread. While this doesn't really calm you, and you're still sweating bullets beneath that helmet, you do begin to focus more on sweeping up the Thread.

As Palouseth leveled out, Tuelarua's stomach lurched, she didn't brace her neck and her head rolled with the turn -- and her mind swam. Sweat broke out instantly, her palms sweaty, and suddenly even being high in the cold air, Tuela felt like she'd jumped into dragonfire. She and Palouseth had practiced more agile maneuvers, but being upside down, with only a few thin straps to save her from plummeting to her death....

Could she do this? Palouseth was born to fight thread, but Tuelarua was not. She'd been lucky all her life, but now? To be eaten by thread, to put her wonderful lifemate at risk... Had Palouseth made a mistake? She wasn't brave, she couldn't be any hero of Pern. Maybe she should have stayed in High Reaches Hold, stuck to her paintings, never --

Darling. Palouseth's voice was a balm on her iced nerves. The rush of warmth and love was unending, of compassion and love and understanding. I love you. You were the only one for me, and I stick by that fiercely. The weyrling did her best to stay level, letting her rider breathe it out. We will be safe. We do our best, so we can keep everyone safe and go home to the ones we love.

You and your dragon are blown right into a large patch that wraps itself around you both. While you think jumping Between isn’t going to be an issue, the pain has you screaming in panic. The leathers you wear don’t seem to protect for long and you struggle to visualize where to go Between. Damage -10 HP and/or death if you choose either from wounds or getting lost Between. You may also KO yourself and fall from the sky to have an NPC gold pick you up and return you to the Weyr for treatment. You’ll be out the rest of the game though.
Damage Saved by Palouseth

Cartujanth whipped her head in the direction of Palouseth, her eyes whirring with panic. Thread was closing all around them. The moment's warning gave the pair a moment to visualize where they needed to go. In the inky darkness of between Urzoh felt he heart pound in her chest, echo in her throat. Another moment and there might not have been getting away from that. They had both seen what threadfall had done to bigger dragons, and it was so close to being them. The chill helped slap some sense into Urzoh, who grit her teeth and snapped to attention as soon as the light hit them.

Oh! A great save![/color[ Catujanth called to her sister in thanks. She was so much less ruffled than her rider. I owe you one!

7. This is horrible. Thread is a lot more potent than you expected. While it started off relatively quiet, the wind gusts so high up are a lot stronger than you expected. If you’re a white or green whose adult size is smaller than 24’, you’ll find yourself struggling. You are blown right into a clump of thread. Damage: -5 HP.

Though her brief blinding blitz of panic was mostly shaken off, the weather had no issues reminding them of the battlefield around them. The wind was sharp, and Palouseth's wingsails, though she may be a smaller green, easily were caught by the strong current. She barked and squealed as it tossed her out of place, and the scream that tore out of her as it sliced down her left flank was deep and worrying.

Tuelarua gripped tight as Palouseth flailed, pushing a safer coordinate to her dragon before the pair snapped between. As they appeared, the dry bits of frozen thread cracked and fluttered away with the breeze -- but it did little to stop the shaking of Palouseth's frame, or the white of her eyes.

8. Everything seemed to be going great. You manage to flame down quite a few clumps, and are even able to show off some impressive aeriel displays. Look at how amazing you are! Unfortunately, as a new Threadfighter, you’re finding it a lot more dizzying. Your jumps Between are sloppier than they usually are at drills. If your rider is naturally more nervous or anxious, you will find yourself jumping way outside of formation and wind up in a wingmates airspace. Damage: Quote a wingmate and have them take -5 damage from averting running into you and flying right into a strand of Threadfall

If you are a more confident rider, your sudden confusion winds up costing you. In your attempts to correct your earlier trouble, you overcompensate for your earlier mistakes and this time wind up jumping Between right into a clump of Thread. Damage Take -5 damage.

Cartujanth in all her enthusiasm, climbed the skies. Unbridled, being pushed with the gales maneuvering faster than she could imagine. The green lost in barreling motion, got disoriented. The site of the sky jumbling - what was up, down? Urzoh held tight to the straps, directing her green giving her clear instructions on how to right themselves once more, Cartujanth jumped between, clearing her head. Feeling sheepish, and more than a little stung catching thread on the snout on her way out of between.

9. It’s all the little stuff that is causing you problems! One minute your airspace is clear, another minute you find it full of Thread. Where is your cover!? If you’re a white, green, or blue rider, you almost start to suspect the larger color you’re covering is just using you as some meat shield and not bothering to flame like they should. Whether it’s actually true, or paranoia from all the stress, you can feel your irritation levels rise. Aren’t you supposed to be on a team and work together? Ugh! Damage -3 HP.

Maybe it was that she was still coming hot off the ache in her flank, or maybe it was the sudden clear airspace around her. But the clump that fell on top of Tuelarua and Palouseth was quick, draping over them like heavy lace -- and the bite was quick, and painful. It sank through Tuela's pants, biting into the flesh of her leg as it did across Palouseth's shoulder and wingarm.

The coordinates came quick, even as Tuelarua grit her teeth through their shared pain, and Palouseth's whine as she appeared back from between. Her rider made quick work to wipe the dust away, making certain it wasn't still alive.

What!? No way! You didn't win anything!

Niselle could see how indignant Uvaldoth was, and she laughed softly at the way Hers craned her neck to glare at her twin.

And it's not my fault Zadelraheth pushed me into some Thread! Take it up with him!

At the very least, Uvaldoth seemed to be just as spirited as ever. For the moment, Niselle was reassured that her dragon didn't need to land - not yet, anyway. But she'd keep an eye on that wound on her shoulder. She didn't like that it was still weeping ichor, and if didn't close up soon she'd probably land to see Hers to the healers soon no matter how many complaints she'd receive about it. There was no reason to allow Uvaldoth to continue bleeding in the air for longer than absolutely necessary, after all.

It wasn't long before they were flagged down for another firestone run, and she made another successful toss. She hadn't missed yet, but that didn't mean that she wouldn't if she didn't keep on her toes.

If you roll a 1 you and your dragon wind up getting KO’d on your way to deliver the stone. You wind up flying right into a patch of Thread (or blown into one) and the damage is so great you fall from the sky. Death is fine but not required. Your weyrling probably won’t be graduating on time though, due to the injury. Talk about a harsh blooding!
If you roll Odds in the 30s you can tell you’ve pissed off a wingrider. If you roll evens, you wind up calling out and warning them of danger! You are a pro!
If you roll Odds in the 50s you’ve botched throwing stone to the Wingleader or Wingsecond. Hoo boy. If it’s evens, you land the roll and it’s a success. They even give you a salute. Awesome!
If you roll Odds in the 90s you’ve botched getting stone to the Weyrleader or Weyrsecond. You’re ruined.
If it’s evens, you land it on your first attempt and even get a nod of thanks! Amaaaazing!
If you roll a 100 you not only successfully throw stone to a Wingleader or Wingsecond but you actually manage to save them from getting scored, thanks to some quick thinking and fancy flying on your part. It wasn’t a risk--just what team members do. On your way back, you’re also able to call out to one of you wingmates, and help them out too. What a hero you are! Save Earn a damage save to use on one of your fellow weyrlings at any point during the game![/stroke]

I won, and if you don't believe me now then just watch me keep winning!

Having just gotten to step in and prevent injury, Wahokinth was riding higher than ever, despite the lingering worry for his sister. She was having a rough time, it seemed like, and that was bad, but he was doing great and he knew it. Not just great, but amazing.

K'niel was the first one to notice the Weyrleader himself flagging them down for firestone, and nudged Wahokinth over that way. A lesser weyrling might be a little nervous about having to do this handoff, but K'niel was nothing if not full of confidence. Wahokinth drew close to the great bronze and K'niel didn't hesitate --- he just tossed his delivery and watched it land, pride filling both rider and dragon at the nod of thanks they received in return.

Oh yeah, they were definitely winning.

Uvaldoth, Uvaldoth, did you see that?

Rider Injuries: Scattered Threadscore patches on back where Thread managed to burrow past flight leathers.

You're blooded almost immediately by a large tangle of Thread. You suppose that's why it's called a First Blooding, after all. Damage Roll a D10 to see how much damage you take. The number represents the damage i.e a 4 would mean -4 HP.

So long as you're not knocked out by Thread, you're able to keep on fighting, though the pain is much stronger than you'd thought. Thankfully, your able to persevere and continue the fight. While a few more tangles get through, you don't take any further damage, and are able to help char Thread to harmless ash.

If you rolled an 8 or higher, you may suffer a bit of trauma from the experience. Perhaps it's the pain or perhaps it's simply fear of getting hit again, but you can feel yourself holding back. What's wrong? Isn't this your sworn duty? Trauma For the duration of Threadfall your damage is lessened by 2 hit points (i.e. If you were to take 3 damage you'd only take 1) but the remaining 2 hit points must be assigned to another weyrling as you didn't sweep up all the Thread out of fear or hesitation and some of it fell through. Quote a weyrling every time you take damage and give them the remaining 2. Encouragement can temporarily ease your trauma for one turn.

Just because you're having a bunch of good luck doesn't mean you're winning! Threadfall isn't even over yet!

Niselle could sense Uvaldoth's growing irritation - and frustration. She wasn't performing as well as she knew Hers wanted to, and at this point she was afraid her increasing desire to do better was going to start making her sloppy. It was only a matter of time until her drive to outdo her own high expectations for herself - her desire to outdo Wahokinth - had her focus wavering. And while she tried to rein her dragon is as best she could, her focus was split between keeping her eyes on the skies and keeping Uvaldoth from getting into any further trouble.

And that proved to be their downfall, in the end.

She didn't notice until too late that a large tangle was headed in their direction, and by the time she had, there was precious little time to maneuver. Uvaldoth twisted under her, but it was too late. The Thread was already coming down and while a strand of it managed to land on Uvaldoth's neck, making her yelp in pain, the bulk of the tangle made direct contact with Niselle's back.

Uvaldoth's eyes went white with terror and she screamed as she blinked between, landing down in the Weyrbowl at long last.

Tell yourself whatever you have to, but you can't argue with results. Wahokinth called back to his sister, though there was a note of uncertainty underscoring his gloating --- he was wining, and he liked to win, but Uvaldoth was having a rough tie out here. He wanted her to do well too, just... just not as good as him. A close race was a lot more fun than one that was lopsided, and this was starting to feel lopsided.

Because of that, he fell quiet, almost pensive, and more focused than playful. K'niel recognized the shift in his dragon's mood, sending him a quiet reassurance even as he caught someone about to hit a clump of thread headfirst, calling out a quick "Watch out!" in time to see them react and swerve away.

...And that was when Uvaldoth screamed.

Uvaldoth?!? Uvaldoth, answer me! The green and her rider had blinked between, but neither K'niel nor Wahokinth had seen exactly what had happened. Another threadscore, probably, but that could mean anything. Anything.

But worry was an indulgence they couldn't allow themselves right now. Once threadfall ended they could learn details. For now... for now they had to keep going, but they'd do so without the cocky gloating. If only because this didn't feel anything like winning at all.

A large tangle of Thread unexpectedly slammed into Othelloth's shoulder and neck, and the blue bellowed with pain and surprise. Blooded, La'hisen thought grimly. The first scars of many. He didn't hesitate to guide his lifemate Between, his teeth gritted. Othelloth assured him he was fine, but he leaned over quickly to make certain there wasn't any bits of Thread that were still alive.

It only made it all the more satisfying when Othelloth soon burned more Thread that fell through, and though the pain was more intense than they expected, they would continue to fight through it.
