The door swung open behind Ayame. The clone at the desk dispersed as the real Bast strolled in, shedding layers of clothing and weaponry until she was down to her shirt and pants. A teacup floated through the air behind her and settled on the desk.
"Ah, good, you're still here, Doc. That mission needs to be fulfilled immediately, but do hang around for a few moments, please," she said as she settled down at her chair. She grabbed one of her living pens and a sheet of paper, and then began to write something in a sloppy script. "I promise you'll get to catch up in a moment, but I have something I need to talk about with Ayame and I would like some input from you as well. We just had a visitor at the gates that claimed to be forming an alliance to fight the UHV. He'll be leaving shortly to go negotiate with the other members, supposedly. The problem is that we cannot verify his identity or claims, so sending a large force with him could be suicide. I cannot send any of you into battle at his side. I have hatched the following plan: I abdicate my position as Kage in order to focus on war preparations; I will go alone to fulfill our supposed obligation to the alliance and summon help should he prove to be telling the truth. Any plans outside of that I will leave to my successor, thereby minimizing our potential losses and ensuring a strong support for the alliance, should it come to fruition. What do you two think?"
The current Kazekage stopped writing and laid the pen down. It didn't move. She looked expectantly at the two Shinobi before her. Her army of pens swarmed the desk, each one bringing a different sheet of paper. They laid their burdens down in a stack on one side of her desk, then lined up on the other like a military firing squad.

It was Knives, this is what he did, he had respect for the Kage, but hell if anyone else seemed to notice it at times. When Knives entered, Bast relayed the question she had just posed to the others, then looked to him expecting a response. In short, it went as follows:
The visitor had brought a request for an alliance against the UHV, but they couldn't confirm his identity, so he couldn't be totally trusted. She would quit being the Kazekage, train for the potential war, and leave on her own if the visitor returned with the alliance set up. This would hopefully minimize losses for Suna in case of an ambush while maximizing offensive capabilities.

Knives scratched his chin in thought. "I suppose that would minimize our loses as a whole, but if somehow we lose you, well i suppose we have enough senior leadership it wouldn't be the worst blow to the village.. would still be bad." He mused pulling out a Knife to play with after he finished his thought upon Bast's plans. "I assume San would most likely be the successor, either by your command or village vote, that or.... " he trailed off thinking of who else it could be.

He said. Ayame shook her head at Daichi and smiled he had become fairly protective in recent years.

James slipped inside the office and claimed his customary seat on the couch, flopping down in the same way he had flopped down on that same couch since he was a genin, and looked at the desk, and Bast, the same way he had once looked at Mam, relaxed, attentive, and pondering.
"I don't like anyone going out alone." James sated easily. He was the Director of Defense after all. "But you are Kazekage, and our most capable. The plan makes sense."

Theodin walked up to the door of the kazekage’s office, he could hear several voices coming from inside but wasn’t quite able to identify who they were or what was being said. After a few seconds, The young jounin pushed the door open and stepped inside, “Hey Bast-sama, what was up with the….”he trailed off as he noticed who all was in the room. “Oh, hey everyone…anyway, so what was up with the `visitor’, Bast-sama? Shiroi and I were watching from the Superdome roof, but couldn't really tell what was going on…” Theodin stood waiting, hoping he wasn't intruding….

Bast kept notes of the input gathered, but seemed to do so absentmindedly. Her focus was almost entirely on what was being said and how it was being said, rather than writing. She took a moment to form a clone to catch up Theodin--and Shiroi too, if she came in--on what was going on. ((See my post at the top of the page.))
"The visitor is an unknown entity who wants to lure us into a war with the UHV based on unverified claims of an alliance with Kirigakure and Kumogakure. As such, I can't risk sending someone else in case of an ambush, and I can't risk sending many people in case it's a trick to lower the defenses of the Village. My going alone maximizes our security both in and out of the Village in case of an attack," she explained to Doc, Theodin, and partially James. She pursed her lips for a moment and made sure her radio mic was on before continuing: "With regard to my successor, San would be the logical choice, though I feel his talents bend in a different direction. I filed paperwork a while back to grant him access to all the information classified to the Kage; however, I feel we need fresher blood, so he should fill the position of Sandaime while the Yondaime is being trained. There will be a formal election later if necessary, but right now I feel that Ayame is the best candidate for Kazekage, both for her own growth and the benefit of the Village as well."
Here she stopped for input. She grabbed her teacup and, finding it empty, had her clone put the kettle on. San would no doubt have his questions about the information streaming over the radio right now, but she would have the pens remain to take care of the paperwork for now, thus lessening his workload.

If Knives had been drinking something this would have been the moment he spat it out. However, he remained calm and cool under his mask and eyed the Kage and then shifted his attention back to Ayame then back to the Kage. "You're sure about this?" Knives knew he would never be the Kage, no few would accept it if they found out he the jinchuriki of the village became Kage. It had been done before, or so some said but no it probably was best that he not be in charge, besides took all the fun out of things. "If that's your decision then I suppose it must be followed." Knives said in his usual monotone style voice.
'She'll do fine, she can hand this. After all she's learned from the best. We al have.' 'Seriously? You're really gonna believe that?! Hmm though I suppose with her in charge I could have a little fun....' 'Oh shut up already.'

Ayame stood there for a moment completely silent, Daichi went over to her and she touched his fur. Yep this was real. She shook her head,"I have no idea what to say, besides the fact that I am honored."The fact that the kage trusted her as much as to nominate her, was enough make her brain quit working momentarily.

Theodin stood there listening as Bast gave a quick summary of what was going on. He couldn’t help but be shocked that she was abdicating her position, and was wanting Ayame to take the position after she finished learning the ropes of the job. It was a little surprising that she wasn’t just getting San to take over, though San probably wouldn’t be too happy about having to do all the administrative work. After a bit of thinking, Theodin nodded, “If that’s what you think would be best for the village, Bast-sama, then sounds good to me.” He turned slightly to face Ayame with a slight smile on his face, “Congrats, mom.” Then waited to hear what the others thought.

James gave it thought for a moment before speaking, in all honestly he had wanted to go himself if anyone was going to go, but Bast plan was a solid one, and her nomination of Ayame was a solid one. It would leave Sanshi to continue teaching and handling the operational side, leave James for village defense, and not risk any of the younger nin.
"I'll second that nomination if that's what she decides. It leaves the other village Sannin to continue with our jobs, and lets Bast do what she do best. I remember Bast at first Rouran, before most of you were done with the academy. Lady Kage was pure hell through that city."

He chuckled a bit darkly at the thought of someone trying to attack the village of the sand while Bast was away, boy would they be in a world of hurt.

Doc fell silent. He knew that Bast was making all the right decisions, but he couldn't help but feel like there was something wrong with the mission. Doc just nodded with to agree with everyone else and slowly started to make his way to the door since Bast was needing that thing from the library.
