Wren listened to the game keeper carefully. He perked at the mention of a giant squid. He whipped around to look at Iñigo, the boy he'd met on the train. He'd barely had time to exchange pleasantries, but Inigo seemed like a good guy. Also he seemed to enjoy having the company, so Wren was keen to stick together. A bit of solidarity couldn't hurt at the moment; according to what he'd been told, they were about to be sorted into a house that would decide their colleagues for the next seven years and how they'd be typecast for the rest of their life. That could definitely be daunting if you thought about it too much, so he didn't. "D'you hear that? There's a kraken next to the school - this is going to be brilliant."
Fiora however was far less excited by the idea of riding across a lake on a boat. Already she was pacing uneasily back and forth across his shoulders, letting a bit more of her claws out and pricking him here and there. After a particularly painful stab Wren gasped and lifted her down to cradle her in his arms. "It's alright Fiora, we're not going to try to meet it today. Maybe later, though." He added thoughtfully. Fiora hissed at him reproachfully. As he tried to set foot in an empty boat she began wiggling furiously, obviously wanting to spend as little time as possible in the wet, wobbly thing. "Er, why don't you pick one, Iñigo. I'll get in when it's time." Forced to retreat back onto sturdy land, Wren began massaging his scaredy cat with encouraging vigor.
Jesse. A name now glued to his face. Asterisk gave him a nice smile before introducing herself, "Nice to meet you, Jesse. I'm Asterisk, or Ash is just fine." He was more talkative than she expected, but then again he did yell out about being a first year. He then asked her about what house she was planning on going into, which was a question she didn't think about, even though was as important as blood status to her parents. "I haven't really thought about it. I mean - I kinda think any of them are good?" She says, not knowing if that was a good, or right, answer. She barely knew Jesse and anything could happen. There was four houses and trillions of reactions. As a child, Asterisk should have at least expect a house. She forces a smile, feeling a bit of awkwardness between them, luckily another girl broke the awkwardness apart. She asked if they were first years. Asterisk nodded as another female walked over. This one was more awkward about this situation. Jesse pulled her into a hug and Asterisk just watched the scene unfold. She wasn't much of a talker, let alone a friend maker. Her life so far was more solitude that most kids. Her parents lived in a nice house on a nice plot of land. She didn't have any neighbors, let alone friends, during her upbringing, but she did have animal "friends", if they counted.
A lady, somewhere out of Asterisk's vision, called for first years and she simply followed the group. She was really uncomfortable with this much interaction and watched to go back home and sleep. Sleeping sounded really good right now. When they reached the dock, there were boats lined up and the lady now instructed that there had to be four students per boat. With a group of five, this wasn't going to go well and it was obvious. Asterisk mumbled a few unheard words before Rosabella came up with an idea, "Maybe two of us can go in one boat and the other three in another?". It was a good idea, although the more awkward girl had already volunteered as a sacrifice, or maybe a better word. Volunteer. When a boy with blue hair entered the scene. Asterisk could barely understand what was happening. Triplets. Giant Squid. And too many people.
"Are you going to wait for your brothers?" Asterisk targeted her words towards the blue haired boy, barely having any strength in her voice. Another girl asked to join the awkward first year group, making Asterisk a bit annoyed with this whole situation. Go into the boats, a simple task, although friendliness tried too hard to stay among everyone. Asterisk didn't want to be the downer but made her way to the closest boat. "If we hang around, we're going to start trouble. Let's try to partner up." She says, getting into the boat and looking at the awkward girl, showing off a smile. "I don't think we've introduced ourselves yet. Want to be my partner?"

Ashley walked down to the lake and looked around at the boats. Well now, this was rather inconvenient. He sighed, and went to an empty one, settling himself down and letting a breath out through his teeth. Why was he having to deal with this? Micah would say he was being antisocial again, but he didn't care. His gaze travelled along the shore, and then off into the darkness where he expected the castle was. This part, well, he kind of wanted to see actually. He just hoped his boat wasn't full of incompetents.

Following an embarrassing send-off by his overly protective mother, Flynn couldn’t help but to keep to himself the whole train ride, and it wasn’t until he finally got off the thing that the boy started to interact with others, albeit still a little scarred. ’What will the others think of me..? I’m not that much of a momma’s boy…’ He thought, frowning as the memory of his mom’s embrace, the flurry of kisses, the constant mention of underwear and writing back to her every week to keep her updated. Maybe when classes start he’ll have an excuse to skip out on the weekly letter reports…
Following the other first years, Flynn gazed at the lake. It reminded him of home, the lakes in Banff that seemed endless, with still waters and thick, dense trees all around. Maybe Hogwarts wasn’t going to be so bad after all. The boy looked around, searching for familiar faces – well, one in particular, and when he spotted her the boy walked past a small group of chattering firsties and tapped Coffee lightly on the shoulder. ”Hey Coffee!” He said with a cheerful smile. ”I uh… couldn’t find you on the train.”’… mostly because I was hiding from everyone…’”How was it? I thought it was a little long for my taste, but I met a few new people.”’…only one, that lady that sold candies, I didn’t think I could trust her…’

xxxxImmediately Lexine started to like the two. They seemed very mature for their ages, and Lexine could say the same about herself most of the time...not to say she doesn't act a little childish once in a while. They did, however, act much like a couple. Lexine was constantly reminded that dating was a thing when her family went out into town, and she couldn't help but point that out to herself while sitting in the slightly rocking boat. She doubted they were, though, most likely siblings of some sort. Lexine couldn't remember the last time she talked to her siblings like that. They were, of course, much younger than her. Shrugging those thoughts away, Lexine brought herself back to the real world.
xxxxTuning herself back into the conversation, Lexine smiled a bit and blushed, "Thank you, Jasper," Lexine murmured. She'd never really been told that by anyone but her parents, and a lot of the time she thought it was a stupid name. It was nice to be told otherwise.
xxxxThen, after there seemed to be a brief moment where Jasper and Alice stared at one another, Alice asked her if she was excited about Hogwarts. "Of course, I believe everyone else here is as well," Lexine answered. "It's kinda weird though, I'm the oldest of my family and I'm actually quite scared," she admitted. "I mean, no prior knowledge about what's going to happen when we get in there? No clue how the teachers may treat us? It's quite terrifying..." she thought, her eyes rolling up towards the sky as she talked lightly, "I'm rambling aren't I? Sorry..." Lexine blushed a bit. She often rambled when she got disconnected from a conversation.
xxxxAs they talked, Lexine all the sudden prayed that they were in the same house, or at least one of them was in the same house. Lexine had a bit of trouble making friends if they didn't talk to her first, and sometimes people would be driven away by her rambling when she started talking...she didn't really want to lose two people that she'd just met and seemed to like her. Then that sparked a question in her, "So, do either of you know what the Sorting Ceremony is? Like, what sorts us?" She asked, eyebrows furrowing as she asked herself the same question. Nothing came to mind...
Mood: Nervous Thoughts: Why did she have to mention a squid? Equipment: wand Where am I: Lake to Hogwarts
Nyx bit her lip at the Grounds Keepers comment about a giant squid. Seriously? She wanted to just hit her head on something, or go home, but it was a little late for that she supposed. She sighed and carefully, excruciatingly carefully, climbed into a boat and looked around, it was pretty, the lake, but it still scared her. Maybe if she could swim that wouldn't be a problem, but she couldn't, so it was. No use in trying to think about the 'what-ifs', they wouldn't help her, only she could, and now was not the time to suddenly decide to learn how to swim. So Nyx climbed into the boat and sat firmly in the middle, away from the bow, stern, port and starboard sides, not wanting to take any chances.
There is a real magic in enthusiasm. It spells the difference between mediocrity and accomplishment.
Rosabella nodded, showing she understood what Dorian said he would do. If the boy took a boat with his brothers, there would be just enough room for the rest of the group to sit together. "Okay, that could work," she agreed. "Exactly. We'll all see each other at school." The muggleborn knew they'd be separated into four different houses, but she didn't think that would mean they would barely see each other. Brown eyes gazed out to the dark lake. "I'm gonna go with terrifying." A giant, man-eating squid living on the school grounds didn't seem safe. "If there really is one, I mean," she added. The eleven year old didn't know whether to believe the professor who told them it existed. Rosabella's thoughts were interrupted by a redhead who joined them. Oh no, we're back to five?! There were supposed to be four students to a boat, not five. Bella decided not to answer the overwhelmed girl's question, and instead, let another person in the group answer her. After all, she didn't want to be mean to the new girl, but she just didn't think five students would fit onto one boat. Silently, Rosabella climbed into the same boat as Asterisk. Dealing with this sort of thing wasn't something she was good at. Being a leader in general wasn't something she was good at. No, Bella was more of a follower.

xxxxxSalem followed the woman, and the path to the shore of the lake. The air almost seemed to be thicker here. That was likely due to the size of the lake that they were standing next to. Water did cause for humidity, and humidity did make the air thicker. The boy hoped that it wouldn't be like this all the time in Hogwarts. He simply would not know what to do with himself. However, he reasoned that it likely wasn't. After all, Hogwarts was a school for magic. Certainly if it ever got too uncomfortable, someone in the castle likely knew a spell to make things comfortable. That was honestly one of the best things about magic. Salem had no idea how muggles could do half of what they did without it. Life must absolutely terrible for them.
xxxxxThe lake was really something quite magnificent. Salem was from London, and he had never really had the chance to go see a lake before. Yes, he had seen a river, he knew what that looked like, but a lake was an entirely different thing. It was like an ocean, but much calmer. Although, Salem was fairly certain that giant squid were not supposed to be found in a lake. He wondered how it got there. Perhaps the founders had placed it there to ward off any muggles. It would be terrible if they found the school. It would be the scandal of the ages. Hogwarts would likely have to close if it was ever found. Salem figured that it was probably best to not question what lived in the water. After all, they could very well ask why he lived on land. The boy hardly had an answer for that. It was just the way it was. Humans lived on land, squids and mermaids lived in water.
xxxxxMaking his way out onto the docks, the blonde looked down the row of boats to try to figure out which one he wanted. This was part of the game. Salem had never been in a boat, and so he didn't want to chance being in the same boat as any obnoxious students who might end up tipping it. If it was embarrassing to get lost on the way to the lake, he decided that it must be mortifying to show up to Sorting with lake water dripping from your robes. The woman who was leading them said that there should only be four students to a boat. That sounded like a pretty good number to Salem. Not too many, not too few. Some of the boats seemed to already be filled. Salem was not interested in overfilling them. At the moment, he was hardly interested in the people in those boats. Groups were harder to judge than individuals. A few of the boats were empty, but he didn't feel like being the first one in. That would mean that he would probably be made to hold the lantern, and if he was going to hold that, he was going to do so because he wanted to, not because Fate had forced his hand.
xxxxxEventually, Salem found himself at the boat the farthest from the woman who had brought them to the docks. In the boat was one girl. Or at least, one student. It seemed to be a girl, but in the dim light, Salem wasn't too sure. Settling for this boat, the boy carefully got in. He felt the boat shift a bit under his feet and heard his heart start to speed up. Whoever thought of building boats was smart, yes, but they were also mad. The boat seemed so unsteady underneath the boy, as if it might decide to turn on him at any moment. Salem wasted no time taking his seat. Perhaps if he sat still long enough, the boat would become steady again.
xxxxxBeing closer to the other person in the boat, Salem could finally make out that it was a girl. He sat in silence for a moment, trying to figure out what to do. He could either remain in silence, or he could talk to the girl. He could try to start to get to know people. The boy needed to learn what pieces he had available in this game before he could start playing it. Right now, it was just this one girl. It would be easy enough to start a conversation with her. He doubted that she noticed him, since she appeared to be leaning over the boat, trying to see into the water. Gathering his thoughts, he decided that he would attempt to talk to the girl.
xxxxx"If you want to keep looking over the edge, I could hold the lantern for you," he offered, speaking in a soft voice, so as to not startle the girl. He wanted to get to know her, not to send her tumbling into the lake. If he sent her tumbling into the lake, then Salem might actually have to feel bad, and that was something that he was not interested in feeling at the moment. It wasn't just that she would be forced to show up to the Sorting looking as though she had almost drowned, it was also that Salem had absolutely no idea what squids actually ate. Particularly, giant ones. Part of him hoped that the woman had been teasing about the giant squid seeing students as snacks, but he didn't want to take any chances.
It was just like Jasper to compliment someone like he did. Of course he was always kind and polite. Alice had always noticed that about him since the moment she meet him. “Yes I have to agree.” Alice said believing that just about all the first years were either excited or nervous right about now. “We’re the youngest in our family.” She told Lexine. Jasper nodded lightly. “I’m sure everything will be fine. Once we get used to what’s in store for us.” He told her lightly. “Jazz is right I’m sure the teachers are quite nice. From what I’ve seen… heard anyways…” Alice let a breath out hoping that Lexine hadn’t caught onto what she said. Jasper really hoped not he didn't want Alice to be put on the spot.
‘You need to be more careful you don’t people think you’re strange…’Alice told herself before Lexine apologized for rambling. “You don’t have to be sorry I ramble all the time.” Alice told her. “It is the truth she really does.” Jasper admitted with a smile. He wouldn’t change Alice for the world.“Well our sister said something about a hat?” Alice said uncertain. “Yes, the school has a sorting hat that places into our houses based on who we are personality wise and such.” Jasper explained almost textbook it seemed. “You can tell someone’s been reading.” Alice said with a smile.
Status:Excited... I hope she didn't catch what I said... With:Jasper, Lexine
xxxxLexine smiled a bit, "Sometimes I wish I was," There were some times when Lexine just wished she was little and young, she always had to be strong for her siblings and never really had anyone to take the hand of herself. Other than her parents...but that wasn't going to happen...
xxxxNodding to Jasper's comment, Lexine shrugged "I know, of course, but I don't usually do well with people I don't know...especially adults..." Lexine had a quick flashback of all the times she'd ever gone anywhere with her family. Stumbling over her words and sticking her foot in her mouth while taking to anyone older than her...it was strange, but it happened every time and she had absolutely no clue why. Then she heard Alice say she'd seen that the teachers were nice...looking up at her with wide eyes, Lexine guessed it was just a slip up of words, but she noticed that Alice seemed to be embarrassed about saying it...maybe there was something she was hiding? Considering Alice didn't linger on the subject, Lexine decided she'd rather not prod, it might just chase the two away. Plus, if Alice really wanted to tell people, she probably would've told Lexine about it.
xxxxThe two started talking about some kind of hat that sorted them. Well that's rather disappointing... She thought. "That's kind of boring, don't you think?" Lexine asked, looking rather disgruntled. "My parents told me how amazing the school is, but they sort us with nothing but a silly hat? I thought it would've been more extravagant, like we had to duel the staff or something of the sort," Lexine grumbled. Then she realized what she'd said and giggled, "rather childish, I must say, but it would've been more interesting then a hat sorting us..." Then she shrugged. She had known that the Sorting Ceremony was tradition, and why break tradition? It was very disappointing that all they did was sit a hat atop their heads. At least they don't make us duel, Lexine added in her head as she thought about it...she'd probably be dead if they did duel... "I tried to read 'Hogwarts, A History' but fell asleep trying," Lexine laughed. It surprised her that someone their age could even read the school books when they were all quite dull...
[O.o.C:] Ila made a mental note, as she turned around towards the soft voice, to pay better attention to what was happening around her. Slowly, as she wasn't keen on dropping the lantern off the side, she turned towards the new comer. First glance, said the boy was the sort that would never normally interact with her. In fact, second, third, and fourth glanced which she managed through her sudden fringe told her the bloke was the popular sort. She decided to keep her hair in her face, better to hide it.
"Nah, I'm good. Can't direct it if I'm not holdin' it. I was hoping to see if anything else lives down there. You know a Giant Squid gotta eat something rather big right?," she asked turning back towards the Lake. Looking down at the water, she could imagine a huge battle between the merepeople and the Squid.

Making her way down to the Black Lake with the others, all following the Keeper of Keys and Grounds, Ally let herself drift back a little in the crowd and look over the others. Clearly, everyone walking this was a First Year. These were the other children that she would be living amongst, taking class with, possibly arguing with over drama or even obsessing over once hormones decided to strike. Or so Leo like to warn her. A few times, her mother and she had talked about the day that she would go to Hogwarts, but it was more relegated to getting to hear old stories. Leo had be there from the time her letter was delivered through all of the shopping and preparations. She knew that he doubted how well he was doing as a parent, but from what she could recall, he was more over protective than both of her parents had been. Combined.
When they reached the boats, there was an awkward pause when they got to the docks and people were trying to decide who would ride together. Ally didn’t see how it really mattered since it was just a ride across the lake to get to the castle. Once there, however it was that Sorting was done, that would be the group that they would be with. A few minutes across the lake didn’t seem like it would make much difference if they were just about to be divided up anyway.
Rather than look for a group or pander for favor, Ally spotted a boat with one boy in it. Deciding that it was as good as any other, she walked over and stepped down carefully. Her family had a small house on a northern Loch so she had spent a lot of time on the water, she didn’t share the nervousness that some of the other students had with the water. Since the fore seat was empty, she settled there and took the lantern. Someone had to do it after all.
As the others divided up and found their own boats, her eyes flicked back through the crowd. She spotted the boy that had bumped into her and said that he was hoping for Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw. He seemed nice, but timid. His response brought her thoughts back to her question that she had posed to the group. Many of them seemed to have a definite idea with where they wanted to go. Did she? Her life had been such a maelstorm lately, it almost seemed natural for her school house to be one more choice taken out of her hands. And was it? Or did her opinion matter? And if it did, what would she chose?
Her thoughts were swirling and her light blue eyes were like fathomless pools of introspection as her face turned back towards the castle, glowing warmly across the inky water. Giving her head a soft shake, sending her brown hair tossling in the light wind, she cleared her mind and realized that she and her boat companion were sitting in absolute silence. Turning back to glance at him, he seemed lost in his own thoughts and not interested in interacting. Not wanting to be a nuisance, she just smiled softly before turning back to await for the time to launch the boats. Though she saw no oars.

Tyson sighed as he lost sight of his brothers in the crowd of moving first years. Finally as they lined up along the lake, that had many small and somewhat dirty boats lining the edge. Tyson frowned as they were directed to climb into it. Finally he saw Dorian, and walked over. "There you are Dorian! Thought I lost you in the crowd. Where's Julius?"he asked as he dashed up to his brother and a group of people."Oh! Hi! I'm Tyson. Dorian here is one of my brothers!"He said with a smile, before he frowned at the boats."These boats look filthy."He said, sighing. But it was what he had to sit in to move on. He climbed into an empty boat and sat on the bench. The boat bobbing beneath him.

Coffee smiled at the girl who had introduced herself to her, hoisting up her bag shyly. "Coffee. Pleasure to meet you, Asterisk. I'd like that, thank you," the girl replied, using her voice for... err... well, the first time in a while, actually. Oh, god. She shouldn't have introduced herself as Coffee yet. The Heist was more than a little confused about everything, but she guessed it would be fine, once everything was sorted out or something. Placing her satchel in the boat to save herself a spot-- both Asterisk and the other girl who complimented her leggings had already gotten into the boat and she wanted to save a seat-- the brunette was about to get in when a tap on her shoulder made her turn around, coming face-to-face with a familiar visage. A small grin appeared, recognizing the person.
She was still glad she actually knew someone before she got to Hogwarts. Listening to the other boy talk, Coffee nodded at the questions. The train ride was alright, she had a little while to nap and everything, which was good. At the mention of new people, her grin turned a little wry and gestured discreetly at the girls in the boat behind her. She'd met a few new people too, even if she didn't know them very well yet. It would be nice to have a few more friends in the place, seeing as she'd be around them for the better part of the next.... seven years?

The Lake was pretty crowded by the time Anita arrived and most of them had already either picked a boat or were milling around the shore. The peppy blonde walked around, enjoying the swish of her robes around her ankles. It was sort of cold, though. Maybe she should have worn leggings instead of shorts under her robes. Spotting a not-so-filled boat, the girl approached it, a smile on her face as she skipped over to the boy and the girl seated in the vessel.
"Would it be alright if I joined you?" Anita asked, smiling, fingers fiddling with her watch as she waited for a response. It would be nice to go in a boat with people. Being alone wasn't very fun.
