Jack closes his eyes and shakes his head, trying to disspell the memories. I know what they'd do Pierre. I was there. A shudder runs through his back. I sealed the portal here when I brought the last group of refugees. Sealed all the portals from your homeland I knew about. No one gets in, no one gets out. Not to this realm or any other. Paid hell from my own kind for it, too.

He puts up a hand before Pierre can say it. No, we don't. Each dog for himself. Ain't no loyalty, no friends. They dun understand. Ya save my life, I save yours. Favor for favor. Getting the others out, bringing more. Ain't neutral. Ain't coyote. He looks at Pierre and sees his mask slip, revealing lidless golden-snake eyes flicking open, closed.

I dun understand how the young ones could make that mistake, Pierre. Didn't they know the danger? How'd ya let 'em go so long an not notice? Pierre's eyes flick shut again, sighing.

Staff didn't tell me, Jack. I knew they talked to you. Shakes his head. Funny you let them in but you block me, one of the few who can. Maybe they figured if you were safe, so were others. Started reading our guests, too. You forget how young they were when we got here. They, they don't remember our homeland, our escape. We've been in this place a long time, hidden away. When Gilda found us, I thought it might be time for us to try to, I don't know, stop running.
