Sevenday 3, Grid 2 1. Courtesan Hall
Quote: 5-6: Mostly Success! If you have a a 3 or lower in Anxiety/Confidence levels, perhaps you needed more fear of Between because something goes wrong and you fail to return and are lost forever... unless you get your coordinates checked. 2. Redoubt Hold
Quote: 2-4: Success & Failure! If this is your second or third roll, if your Exhaustion Level of 3 or higher is going to be reduced by one for the rest of your rolls. i.e. If you had them down as a 5, they are now feeling like a 4. All future rolls will be based on this number until you finish the game. If you had them as a 4, they are now down to a 3, and if you had them as a 3 they are now down to a 2. You are feeling mentally exhausted! 3. Paradise Falls Hold
Quote: 8-12: Success! You manage to make the leap without any trouble! Good job! Breathe easy! 4. Sand's End Hold 5. Western Weyr
Happily, the pair emerged above Redoubt Hold, but Taibbi was sweating inside her leathers, despite the chill of between and the cooler air at their altitude. The sweat was cold and unpleasant smelling, the sweat of worry bordering on fear. Her hands were ever so slightly unsteady within their fur-lined gloves.
Taibbi? Neuwith inquired, peering around to fix her rider with a chartreuse stare. Are you feeling all right?
I'll be fine, Taibbi assured the green. Let's get back to work.
Neuwith chortled. That could be Taibbi's catchphrase: "Let's get back to work." Not that Neuwith minded work, but Taibbi's dedication to it dwarfed the dragon's work ethic in much the same way she dwarfed her human bondmate.
Someday, Neuwith said, gazing down at Paradise Falls, I am going to go there and enjoy the water. And you are going to come with me, of course. And we should bring my clutchsibs. It would make for an excellent outing.
You can suggest it. Taibbi hoped that Neuwith did, and that some others agreed. She would like a day to relax away from the Weyr. Or at least an afternoon.

This was a true test of their studies and prowess, with no room for error. Phryana had forced herself to go to bed early after how exhausted she'd been last sevenday, well aware of how much of a toll this took. That... didn't bode well for today. But dwelling on a failure that hadn't happened yet was only guaranteed to make it come true, and she carefully pushed it out of her mind before focusing on the coordinates of their first jump. Kleoth hummed reassurances quietly, but she was concerned for her rider's sake. Still, when instructed, she took them Between... Quote: 3: Success and Failure! Everyone else succeeds! Her keen eye for small details certainly aided her now, and the trip Between was smooth and successful.

Taibbi was still sweating heavily, and the sweat was beginning to pool at the juncture of thigh and hip. She was going to be swampy when she got back to the weyr. Even so, there was a good chance she might just collapse onto the furs and go right to sleep. She was so tired.
No. That is not the plan, Neuwith informed her. You are going to bathe and then you are going to write to your mother and tell her what a smashing success we were today. Only then is the collapsing into furs and sleeping going to happen.
Bossy, Taibbi grumbled. Neuwith's insistence on her bathing had never been in jest - the green cared deeply that her human was clean and nice smelling at all times - but Taibbi frequently chose to take it as such because otherwise it was just insulting.
Despite her weariness, Taibbi found that it was not such a struggle to fix Sand's End Hold in her mind, and shortly the pair of them were hovering in a light rain that did nothing to improve Taibbi's increasing chill. She wondered if she was going to catch a cold from this endeavor. She hoped not. They still had so many more practices to do, and the idea of trying to do this while fighting a cold was just dreadful. She simply would not get sick. She refused.

Her queen rumbled softly, her touch gentle upon Phry's mind. Your nerves will get the best of you only if you let them, my love. She was right. But Kleoth often was, when it came to her rider. With a slow breath, Phryana firmly fixated the location in her mind, and sent them both Between. Quote: 3: Success and Failure! Everyone else succeeds! Things were going well--but they had gone well last time, up until Kleoth had asked her to check her coordinates. Visualizing the next location, Phryana fixed it in her mind.... and asked Kleoth to take them Between once more. Quote: 6: Success! You passed with flying colors! There was nothing to that jump and you're feeling great! Gain one Anxiety/Confidence level! Another impossibly smooth transition, and laughter slipped from her breathlessly once they emerged back into the warm sun. If this is your First or Second roll and you have a 1 or 2 in any of your stats, you are going to botch pretty dang hard and fail to make the leap. This ain't no child's play, after all. You need to be alert, you need to know your s**t, and you need to know how the heck to do this! If you fail to make the leap, you must either keep yourself from dying by asking for help, or taking a Scare and dropping your confidence down by one point! If you roll this three times or more, let Uta know, so she can axe an NPC to take the fall in your place. (Took a scare—Scare 1/3) Into the second hop they went... only for dark, inky blackness to close in, refusing to burst back to light. A breath. Two. Five. Six... and at last, with a blinding blaze and a gasp of frantic, panicked air, they found themselves above Oasis Hold. The brilliant green had paled to near-gray in color, and Jacquol clung, panting to her beck for overlong, shivering in fearful silence for what had almost become of them.

That's right, Neuwith chimed in. No getting sick allowed. Home, bath, letter, sleep. No time for sick.
Taibbi smiled and rubbed a gloved hand across her forehead, smearing nervous sweat and adolescent skin oil toward her hairline. They were nearly done with this round, it was true. They just had to make it home.
And yet, Western Weyr didn't actually feel like home to both of them. It was where Neuwith had hatched, and that was not nothing, but for Taibbi it was just another place she lived due to circumstances largely outside her control. Not that she minded it there - definitely the climate was more pleasant than at High Reaches, weatherwise - but it still threw her when Neuwith said "home" and meant Western.
Where is home for you, then? Neuwith asked.
Not so much a where, but a when, I supposed, Taibbi admitted. When I had two parents.
When you didn't have me? the green asked, a little vulnerable and seeking reassurance.
No. I want you, too, Taibbi assured her bond. I can't imagine anyplace being home if you're not there with me.
Neuwith beamed, her pleasure practically bursting from her as she flapped droplets of water from their last location's rain off her wings and awaited Taibbi's guidance for their return to Western Weyr. Taibbi thought of Neuwith and of home and the pair leapt into the dark of between.
In the endless cold, Taibbi barely stopped herself from imagining what it would be like if they didn't emerge from between because she was too confident or too tired or simply incapable of fixing the coordinates correctly. She managed not to think that this might be their last time going between together, or doing anything else together, for that matter. At least until they were flying over Western Weyr, both alive, both unharmed.
