but if light were to always turn to darkness upon meeting it, then wouldn't all of the things we see, breath, touch, and taste, have a tint of darkness in them, which means that we all have an inner darkness inside of us, in which we cannot escape.....

It's true. But compare Kari in Digimon 01-02. I think her overcoming the darkness, however temporarily, helped Gatomon digivolve.

No darkness can not be where light is. They can touch but not both exist in one place they can exist close together but not in one place.
