I think for his backstory, he'll have been young when the storm dropped and the Hippogryphs were freed from the desert/Ulun'suti oppression. He grew up idolising the strong hippogryphs that saved them from living in dust and servitude for the rest of their lives. His parents, used to the desert ways, chose to stay and live there, but he always had an adventurous streak and wanted to break free of his heritage. He grew up to be an independent and confident stallion, and set out to see the rest of the world. He's gotten more used to the Kawani lands now, and spends his time trying to see as much as he can, which would explain why he might stumble upon Mags' cave during his adventuring xD But he's getting a bit bored of being by himself, as he's never really had a best friend or anyone to be close to, just his family in the past.
