"...We should get moving. It's only a matter of time before they come back with reinforcements." Lucian said as he got to his feet, pulling Scarlet up with him. "I...don't think we want them to sic the clerics on us. We should be fine so long as we stay in the woods."

"Good point." Scarlet gripped Lucian's hand tightly before glancing around. "We should start picking more secluded spots from now on when building campsites. If only so them church people don't find us."

Holding Scarlet's hand, Lucian blindly led them through the woods, falling rather silent now as they left the religious city behind.

"Let's be honest here; anyone that could help me would sooner kill me for what I'm becoming." Lucian said bitterly, his hands starting to shake a bit as he reluctantly came to terms with the truth. "Why beat around the bush anymore? After what happened with the guards back there, the truth is obvious! I'm turning into a demon, Scarlet! And there's no telling how long my humanity will hold out!"

"So?! Your parents are both human, so this clearly isn't a natural thing. It's a process. And somehow, there has to be a way to reverse that process!" Scarlet insisted. "Maybe we can just do us some research. Get away from the more faithful cities, or find you a really good disguise. Get you some new glasses or a blindfold, too, assuming you don't still have your old one."

"I know it's not natural; that doesn't mean there's a way to reverse it! I don't need to see to know I'm getting worse. I was using magic back there, something I've never learned to use, and my arrow wound is already starting to heal, to say nothing of my previously sprained ankle. Glasses or blindfold, it won't matter how you disguise me, it's getting harder to hide my symptoms and they'll only get worse!"

"That doesn't mean we shouldn't try." Scarlet pointed out, biting her lip immediately afterwards lest she say something they'd both regret, start crying, or possibly both. She tried to avoid doing something like that as often as she could.

"Well what would you suggest then? By the time we do find someone willing and able to help me, any white magic is more likely to kill me than heal me!" Lucian was trying not to raise his voice, but he couldn't help it. He was scared and starting to panic at all the likely scenarios that ran through his head. He didn't like any of them and was starting to wish he'd just died as a kid instead.

"I suggest we just calm down and think on this once we don't feel like we're about to blow a gasket." Scarlet just wanted to give Lucian a big, tight hug but she didn't know how well he'd take such a gesture for the moment. So she just squeezed his hand once more.
