20. One new thing about being in the Queen's Wing is the crooning and creeling that happens. Though there's the roar of flame, the squeals of pain, and the bellows of anger above from the fighting Wings, the golds beneath seem to be sending assurances where they can. Perhaps that's also part of a gold's job? Your own queen bugles alarm as they can see danger for one of the weyrlings above. Roll a D10:

Odds: Damage Save Quote a weyrling and save them from damage! That's how it's done, right? Unfortunately, by saving one wingmate, you watch in horror as the tangle that was avoided gets kicked by the wind and into another weyrling nearby. Damage Quote another weyrling and have them take -5 HP.

Here it was… their time to shine! Mictecath called out to another weyrling dragon, seeing a clump of Thread that was about to score them!

And yet… and yet… it hit another. No. Oh no. She creeled in distress, crestfallen that she could not save all of her siblings… how had this come to pass? Why could she not be-

Mic. You did your best. Please! Keep flying!

15-17. Things seem to be going well. You and your gold manage to save one of your wingmates from damage. Additionally, your flame hits the mark on the next few targets that fell through the wings. Unfortunately, your straps feel a little loose, and you're grateful that your gold doesn't have to get thrown around too much. Maybe it's just paranoia. [If you roll this 3 times, you realize that your straps are loose and/or broken. Shardit! You'll have to go back to the Weyr and get a second pair. It's possible (if you took damage) Thread chew through some of them--but it's also possible it was a rookies mistake. Lose a roll as you return to the Weyr to get a backup pair of straps. If you roll this another 3 times, you are all out of backup straps, and are out the rest of the game--much to your embarrassment.]

Her confidence returning little by little, Nyara’s spirits buoyed once again. The flamethrower was responsive to her touch, enabling her to bring down the menace with ease.

And yet… still, those straps bothered her. Perhaps the wind had caused them to come loose a little? It’d be okay. Fall was almost over.

Things got worse as Allegriath was hit by Thread in a firestone run. The colour leaked from Nyara’s face as she watched her small-friend and her beautiful, bonny white swarmed by the unthinking deadly parasite. Mictecath cried out in distress- and it was only a firm will that kept her in position.

We cannot help, my love, but we’ll see them when we are done. I promise you.

Allegriath…

Quote:
2. Oh for Faranth's sake! A large clump of Thread comes falling down fast through the wings. You go up to catch it, your dragon angles, and you fire your flamethrower. Unfortunately, despite all the practice you've had, you miss it. Down it falls, with no other gold able to sweep it up--right over a patch of green. Though you try to make note, you can't help but feel like a letdown. There might be more moments, but you know that Thread is going to do damage immediately. You were the last defense. In fact, that's not the only clump you miss. As you continue to fight, perhaps it's just bad headspace, perhaps it's just bad luck, but you are really struggling to hit these targets. One even blows back into you and your queen, burning against her, and causing Damage -4 HP.

And how things changed- just like that… With Allegriath falling from the sky, Mictecath was beginning to dishearten. Nyara fumbled with her flamethrower, her attention half spent on reining in her overwrought Queen.

The clump of Thread evaded her fire, and she spat a curse into the air, stolen away by the wind.

And still, Mic’s eyes scanned the skies, watching her brethren flame and fight… she could not tear her gaze away, for every moment they fought was another that put them at risk.

Faloth. She saw him blink Between to rejoin his group after a firestone run… and yet- she had been too slow, too unobservant… she should have known! She could have helped! She watched her sibling brown scored.

Faloth! The gold dragon cried out, and Nyara clamped down on the overwhelming urge to go and save them.

Stop! Stay in formation! We cannot rescue them! Let the older, bigger queens catch him. He will be okay! Nyara tightened her mental grip on her dragon, not allowing Mictecath’s emotions to pour out and lead them into trouble once more.

This was what dragonriders did. They cooperated, but they did not abandon self-control and discipline just because another was hurt. They had a sharding job to do- a duty to Pern.

And by the First Egg, they would do it.

Another of the same happened, with Soui and Museth moving somewhat effortlessly. Unfortunately they seemed a bit more focused on themselves and not others, so even though they could help it was unknown if they'd actually be able to.

Also again, Soui was so thankful for her straps.

Quote:
5-6. Your adrenaline is pumping and you feel fit to fight! Whatever fears or worries you have, you’re absolutely ready to take the world by storm. Your dragon wheels and dives, and you wind up successfully flaming some strands. Of course, you also find yourself suddenly dangling in some mighty precarious positions as your dragon avoids getting smacked by a tangle of Thread. The straps you so valiantly worked on are the only thing keeping you from plummeting to your death. Let’s hope Thread doesn’t latch onto those thick leathers… and if they do, that your backup security straps work! Thankfully, as the fight continues, you focus on what’s important--flaming down Thread. If white, green, or blue, you wind up saving one of your wingmates thanks to your impressive quick wingwork! Damage Save Quote a wingmate and save them from the damage they would take. If brown or bronze, you play a bit of hero. Knowing your dragon should be able to take a hit, you can Self-Sacrifice. Quote a wingmate and take their damage instead. While it may hurt you, it also means you were able to save the day.

All of the movement, and Soui's thoughts on her straps, might have been more bad that good. It felt like one of them was coming lose, and she didn't want to tempt wiggling to see if that was true. For certain when she landed she'd need to make sure if her primaries were in good condition, or what could be causing the uneasy feeling. At the moment though all she could do was stay focused, having her dragon flame down as best they could.

Quote:
10. Someone call you butter, because you’re on a roll! Not only do you manage to flame down every target you go after, but formation changes are a breeze. Honestly, you’re feeling mighty proud of yourself and your dragon right now. Unfortunately, your luck doesn’t hold as the fighting carries on. One minute you were flying high, and the next minute something… something suddenly isn’t right. Oh no! You feel one of your straps begin to loosen. Did you not pull it tight enough? Was it a flaw in the design? Is it just bad luck!? While you’re okay for now, any jarring motions or wheels and dives make you feel just a little more closer to slipping off and out.

With the end of the first hour came the marking that half of Soui and Museth's flight wave was done. The pair was doing good, or at least as good as they can be, but another twist and turn brought that same feeling. There was something wrong with her straps and the hot wave of shame she felt knowing that it was likely her fault weighed hard on her mind.

You have the back ups, so if something does happen you can make it through. I will not let you fall. Museth turned sharply, but Soui could tell the white was doing her best to make sure her rider didn't feel like she could get tossed at any moment. If you do think there is a mistake we can review it properly before you panic. Everyone makes mistakes, but again. Focus. The pushy nature of the words brought some cheer, and so the weyrling moved back to focusing.

They'd be okay, even if it meant ignoring what was happening around them for now.

So far, so good. Museth's attempts to lessen the strain on Soui's straps to ease her rider's mind was working, and she could feel confidence growing in the young rider. That was good since they would need it in the Turns to come. A few more twists and turns looked like they would end in the clear but a sudden wave of ash pelted the pair; Museth took the brunt of whatever light bit it would be, and Soui simply coughed.

Museth, are you okay? Any burns??? Cuts??? The panic came through where there had only been calm and the white dragon sighed. It was back to step one, and she kept her eyes on the dragons around them. Should someone need help Museth would help, even as Soui fretted while focusing.

It was impressive how her rider could manage two things at once.

Quote:
15 As you're wheeling and diving and cutting through the thread, you make some impressive moves. Your dragon takes some ash damage but it's light, and a reminder to try to avoid flying directly into the burning flames. Damage -2 HP

Thankfully, throughout, you do manage to see some thread coming right at a fellow weyrling. You call out to them and save the day! My oh my, how impressive you are! Save Quote a wingmate and nullify any damage they're to take!

Thank goodness she was a whiterider, or else her failure in tossing stone would have been an absolute downer. Soui had come to understand that not much was expected from whites anyway (other than to flame thread until they died) but that didn't mean she wasn't upset at her failure. Thankfully it was near the end of her run and she'd only messed up a few small times, but that toss to the Weyrleader wasn't good.

He won't even remember it was us, don't worry. Museth again attempted to soothe, though she was seething in her own right. This would set them back, the need to practice tossing again and again after getting the straps fixed. Thankfully their run was up and they could land, not causing more problems. When this is all done we can try until you feel confident. Don't think it was only you messing up out there.

That helped, as always, and really the teen was over it as soon as they started heading down. No use crying over missed firestone, right? Plus there were many other things she needed to focus on now, like making sure Museth's face was okay!

At least he didn't hit anyone with the bag, and Nevidenth was keeping him steady. They could do this.

It happened too quickly, entirely too quickly, and before Yura could react to move them out of the way properly Thread was upon them. A shriek escaped from his dragon, from him, as Thread tore into him the same way he'd watched a wher go at a wherry. Neivdenth was trying hard, fighting hard, flaming as much as he could, but the patches of Thread around them seemed endless.

Thoughts of his father, of how he got eaten into, instantly flooded Yura's mind as he attempted to get himself and his lifemate out of the way. They needed to jump between before things got worse, but - but!! He went dark, blank, and so did Nevidenth.

Mine! The shrill cry was the last the bronze had before his wings failed and he went down, tumbling hard. Towards the ground the pair went, one barely awake and the other just pressing to keep them both alive. Would they be caught before they hit...? What would happen?

Yura just....wanted to go home, not for now? For now he and Nevidenth would stay wounded at High Reaches. He was such a failure.

Quote:
11. Ouch, ouch, ouch, and more ouch. When it rains it pours, or so the saying goes, and while some of your wingmates might be in relatively quiet airspace, the wind keeps kicking Thread into yours! While you and your dragon flame and charr the ancient enemy, it unfortunately doesn’t leave you unscathed.

Quote:
4 You and your dragon are blown right into a large patch that wraps itself around you both. While you think jumping Between isn’t going to be an issue, the pain has you screaming in panic. The leathers you wear don’t seem to protect for long and you struggle to visualize where to go Between. Damage -10 HP and/or death if you choose either from wounds or getting lost Between. You may also KO yourself and fall from the sky to have an NPC gold pick you up and return you to the Weyr for treatment. You’ll be out the rest of the game though.

Full Fall (Late as sin)

HP: 28

Roll 1:
Quote:
1. Things are actually quiet. Very quiet. In fact, you find yourself flying mostly dead space. Nothing seems to come your way and you find yourself thinking a lot. Just you and your thoughts. Is this really Threadfall? Somehow you thought it was going to be a lot more dangerous, or at least, with less time to think. Things do pick up with a few gusts and you and your dragon manage to flame down some stray Thread successfully, without missing any filaments. Yes! Not too bad at all! Unfortunately, the silence grips you once more and it's just you and your dragon.

As if things weren't bad enough in life, their first threadfall finally came upon them, not near long enough after their Between lessons for the sting of loss to be gone. For the burn of failure to leave them, knowing full well that they had wobbled and nearly disappeared Between forever as well, but at least he'd have been with... with... It was no use thinking those sorts of thoughts. Even Bossuth's never ending kindness had it's limits, his loyalty did not but he could be easily shaken if pushed and R'iz didn't want that. Both of them had enough to focus on as it was or, maybe at the same time, they didn't? With the uprush they had gotten into their formation and nothing. There was nothing around them, there was nothing to do. A flame or two here and there, but they caught what they needed and that gave the pair far too much time to think.

Far too much time to remember.

There may not be much happening but you should try and avoid those particular thoughts. Bossuth offered in the slightly gray voice he'd taken on since the deaths that rocked their Weyrling group. It had perked up slightly after a certain green's maiden flight that lead to R'iz's spirits raising just a bit. But that had been temporary on both of their parts and time only lead to both of them remembering despite themselves. Silence and boredom in the air was not helping, but the redhead had no answer for his dragon other than to take a deep breath.

Bossuth wasn't wrong after all.
