"Huh? I wouldn't ask if I didn't want to," Wayne said with a raised eyebrow, then shook his head, "It's a bit of a walk though, so we'd better get a move on before it gets too busy."
Wayne held out his hand to help Henrietta get to her feet. He glanced over to the desk and said, "Gonna have to grab my pokémon real quick," he looked back to the girl, "As soon as I'm full, it's Gym Match time!"

Was it possible to actually feel first degree burns from blushing? Henrietta might be the first person to reach that point. She took the hand and felt herself pulled to her feet. She was light, skinny, really. An easy pull for someone who'd worked on his body like Wayne had.
She cupped her right hand with her left and slowly approached the counter. Her hands rested on her stomach.
"M-me t-too," she responded. After Wayne got his Pokemon she'd get hers. She looked them all over before putting the balls on her belt. They looked fine.
"I-i'm ready," she announced and then she'd follow Wayne wherever he lead them, her head lowered.

"Sweet," Wayne said without looking. He was inspecting each of his pokéballs in turn before pocketing them. The trainer paused when he reached Hitmonlee's ball, his brow slightly furrowed before he put the ball away and forgot about it.
"Okay, Striaton gets pretty busy at night so make sure you don't get lost," they left the pokémon center and reached the cool outside air. The sky was a deep orange colour now. People were starting to go out for the night; the small cafés that were full during the day were now empty and instead it was the clubs and bars that began to fill up.
Wayne peered over to Henrietta when they crossed into a crowded plaza filled with people showing off their pokémon. There were a couple of battles taking place; occasionally there'd be a rush of heat as a fire attack was used. Wayne could hear the rowdy cheers from spectators. The plaza had a few tables and chairs set up with an outdoor bar serving drinks. Not what they were after. He said to Henrietta: "You got a Xtransceiver or anything?"

The cool night air was wonderful. As the sun faded away behind the horizon it would grow colder. Henrietta's hands rested on her shoulders as her arms crossed over her chest and she'd rub down to her elbows and back up as she walked.
She was quiet and her downcast eyes curiously betrayed that downcast form from time to time to look around, never did she raise her head but of course she'd turn it. Battles, the heat of a fire type move exploding nearby heated her cheek. Different from a blush, nice in contrast to the air.
When Wayne spoke her eyes moved to rest on his feet and then her head rose and she looked at the hollow of his neck. "N-no. Just this," she patted her shinai, "and some pokeballs."

((IT'S NOT LIKE THAT gonk scream ))
"Eh, that sucks," Wayne muttered, putting his hands behind his head and looking up to the sky as they came to a stop. His arms dropped to his sides and he looked to Henrietta, "You should get one, they're like watch-videophones but they don't cost anything when you wanna make a call."
He looked about, like a Patrat scouting for predators. Only Wayne was the predator. Not that kind of predator, Ren. He was a restaurant predator looking for the gym.
"Hey, it's over that way!" he said, excited now that he was getting closer to dinner. Hurrying, Wayne led the way across the plaza and up to the pokémon gym doors. You didn't need a reservation to eat here but you did have to be a trainer. The place was huge; at least the length of the full-sized pokémon battle arena that ran alongside the dining area. While the audience was protected by a reinforced transparent barrier, they could watch the Gym Leaders take on challengers while they were eating.
"Good evening," said one of the non-gym leader waiters, "how many people?" "Just two," Wayne said, looking back to make sure Henrietta hadn't become more people. "That's not a problem. If you'll just follow me to your table?"
The further into the gym they went, the better and stronger the smell of cooking became. There didn't seem to be a theme to the restaurant section of the gym, so Wayne assumed there was a wide variety of food to pick and choose from. He felt his mouth water a bit as he sat down and picked up a menu.
"Any idea what you're having?"

Henrietta followed suit when Wayne picked up pace. Soon they were at the gym and soon after they were seated.
Henrietta picked up her menu and opened it.
"I-i don't know," she answered Wayne. Her eyes scanned the menu and she flipped the page.
What to get?
Something healthy, something healthy...
"Garlic bread and spaghetti," she said.
Is that healthy? Oh well.

"I'm gonna have the Special Miltank Steak," Wayne said, trying not to think of Miltank as intelligent animals. They weren't that intelligent but they could speak to a certain degree. Probably about as intelligent as a student.
"Alright, let's do this," Wayne snapped the menu shut and called over the waiter. He relayed the order and the man scurried off while Wayne's stomach growled at him.
"Hey," he said, speaking over the top of his knuckles as he rested his elbows on the table, "did you know that this place is the Striaton Gym as well?"
She'd have to be blind not to have noticed the arena.

That explained the arena. So this was also the gym? Then that meant that they were going to be battling here as well.
In front of all of these people.
Henrietta nervously said, "y-you d-don't s-say."
She looked at the arena to see if someone was battling but quickly looked away. Her eyes rested on Wayne and she said, "D-do you think it's hard?"

Zero landed and smirked, closing her eyes as her opponent fell. “Zehe,” she chuckled. But now that the battle was over, she began to look around at how many people there were, watching through the glass. Cheering loudly for N and giving Cress compliments on a job well done.
Gritting her teeth, she backflipped into the air and became a magenta disc of whirling light. The light became lighter and lighter until is disappeared completely in a trail of white sparkles that faded away right after.
N walked forward briskly, not making eye contact with anyone as he tipped his head down. This place, with all of it’s noise and meaningless excitement, was unfit for his Zorua. Or any other pokemon. Is this what all gyms are like? he asked himself.
…But I have to do this. This is the only way that the formula works.
“Thank you for the match,” he mumbled to Cress as he took the badge from Cress while getting his case from his pocket. He liked the way the badge matched it’s slot perfectly, with several spaces left for the others. It expressed it’s geometry so simply and yet so eloquently, as a countdown to the end. 8 – 1 = 7.
7 = the number of badges remaining.
N walked away, exiting the arena through it’s glass door. He saw two trainers, a boy and a girl, walk into the café together and sit down. The green haired trainer narrowed his eyes in thought. He had seen the girl before.
The Darumaka from earlier. He was her pokemon.
I need to see her match.
N walked away to the front of the restaurant. A minute later he returned, now being seated at a table with a clear view of the arena. The perfect point of symmetry, dead center.

“C’mon, don’t be afraid to swing.”
Sal launched another hook at Chen Zhen and he ducked, wobbling a little from his perch. The Pansage stood atop a thin beam of wood standing up straight so he could be roughtly at eye level with Salieri’s 5’2”. Atop the Pokemon Center, the higher speeds of the breeze made keeping his balance even harder.
Chen Zhen launched an uppercut, and Salieri leaned back to dodge the strike. Gritting his teeth, Chen Zhen leaned back to avoid losing his balance and falling. He spun to smack Salieri with his tail, and the Battle Girl bobbed her head down to dodge. “Good, nice momentum.”
Frowning, Chen Zhen jumped off of the beam. It fell towards Salieri and she kicked it back up, flipped it into her hand. [We don’t need to make this perfect, we need to challenge the gym!] he told her with conviction, pointing to the gym that was right next door.
Salieri rested the beam on her shoulder and turned her head to the gym. “Huh.” She craned her head back to Chen Zhen, putting a hand on her hip. Even though she didn’t know what he was saying, his behavior made it clear. “So you think that you’re ready to fight Chili’s Pansear?”
Her pokemon nodded eagerly. “You guys are pretty alike, you and that monkey. I can see why you want to fight. Alright then!”
Sal banged one end of the beam onto the rooftop right in front of her, resting her palms on top of it and standing up tall. “Pansear’s blood is boiling. Is yours boiling too?”
Chen Zhen beat his chest and then pounded his fists together, speaking his name confidently. “Well, that settles it, I guess. By the time we’re done with this place, there’s no way they’ll pass health inspection.”

((What's the plan? Throw monkey feces around the kitchen? razz ))
"Nah, they have to go easy on new trainers. See those posts on the way in?" he pointed over to the main entrance. Two silvery columns were positioned a few feet past the door with the maître d’ stood next to them. "They check your trainer card and compare it to the Pokémon League's database. The gym leaders make the match harder depending on how many badges you've earned."
Wayne had done his research when Tess became a trainer. While he'd never challenged a gym before, he more or less knew the system.
"Should be a piece of cake, even if you are a new trainer."
"Bad news!" a waiter with blazing red hair announced as he rushed over to Henrietta and Wayne's table, "I'm so smokin' hot, I burned the last of the Miltank Steak to cinders!" It was Chili. He jumped on the spot when he recognised Henrietta, "Well if it isn't my protegée! Come to challenge my Gym, Henrietta?!"
"Prote-" Wayne spluttered, snapping his head in Henrietta's direction, "the gym leader's your teacher?!"
"Taught her everything she knows," Chili boasted, hands on his hips and his nose turned up, "Hey!" he pumped his fist and leaned in closer to the girl, "why don't you come up and do your gym challenge now?! We can show everyone all the stuff you've learned!"

So they checked your trainer card electronically? Henrietta pulled it from her bag and looked at it.
What did she rank as?
D, so they have to scale like that, or is it easier because I have no badges?
Henrietta tucked it back into her bag when Chili arrived. She looked up and awkwardly smiled.
Protegee?
She looked over at Wayne.
Ishe impressed?
Henrietta looked back to Chili.
I'm already confident, and he's calling me out..
Might as well..
"O-okay," Henrietta said and she stood up slowly. Then she turned to Wayne. "I'll try to hurry," she said.

"Take your time," Wayne grinned then looked to Chili, poking a line on the menu, "Oh yeah. I'll have the Krabby Newburg then."
"Yeeeeooow! Culinary bravery!" Chili yelled, slapping his hand down on Henrietta's shoulder, "Coming right up! Come on, Henrietta! To the arena!"
With that, Chili led the poor girl across the restaurant, shouting Wayne's order to the kitchen staff on the way past. As they reached the reinforced door that let them access the arena, he started to explain that: "I'm just one of the gym leaders here. My brothers specialise in Grass and Water types! What type of pokémon are you gonna use, Henrietta? That changes who you battle against!"
The door opened and the clacking of the lock echoed in the huge arena room. It was almost completely lacking in colour; the arena was white and vast, with black markings on the ground that depicted zones. The neutrality of the place mirrored the gym's gimmick; there was no one specialty to expect. Chili led the girl in and stood proudly with his hands on his hips.
