"What are you doing?" Eunmi said, cocking her head to the side. She took a few steps forward, her path adjacent to the the direction Henrietta was facing. She turned and walked back the way she had come, slowly, looking at Henrietta's strange stance. She lowered looking down at her footing and then straightened upright.
"I'm not sparring with you," Eunmi said. "I mean, I think we're going to have to work at an accelerated rate - you're not going to have a belt rank. That said, you don't start sparing until you have at least a rank."
Eunmi placed her index finger on Henrietta's forehead and pushed, likely forcing the girl without a proper stance backwards from that alone.
"In Taekwondo, there are stances you need to learn," Eunmi said, placing her hands behind her back and continuing to pace back and forth.
((Note: I only know ITF type Taekwondo. A lot of the terminology is the same, but the stances can be different in WTF type. WTF is more of a martial sport and is a lot more competitive in sparring, while ITF has a lot of focus on patterns. However, sparring is still pretty much the same in both, from what I've seen.))
"Since we are doing this one on one," Eunmi said, coming to a stop and turning. "You have no need for a Chul Sa - a line up. However, if I should say to you 'Cha Rutt,'" Eunmi said, sounding like she said the word 'chariot' in english, "It means for you to stand in attention."
Eunmi stood, feet pressed together, arms extended at her sides, fists clenched and held at a forty-five degree angle towards the ground.
"'Kyung Yet' is to bow," Eunmi said, barely nodding her head. "You always bow lower to your higher rank. To do otherwise is disrespectful.
"Never," she started, looking Henrietta carefully, "turn your back to me or anyone of a higher rank. This is not only disrespectful, but should your opponent see this, they will take advantage of such a stupid mistake."
Eunmi stepped out, her feet as wide apart as her hips, her fists pulled forward to the front of her waist as she said, "Chun bi - your ready position. I refer to this as a parallel ready stance, from here we can move to the other stances, but this is always your resting position in a class setting.
"You do not take a chun bi stance in a fight," she said, shifting her fists to the sides of her waist, still what-would-be belt level.
"Par roh," Eunmi said, "Is to return to your ready stance. When that happens, you can place your hands here instead of in front of you.
"Are you getting all of this?"

Henrietta's head moved back when pushed. She didn't, however stumble. She saved herself with a push off of her forward leg, bringing her backward in a sort of short but quick jump, letting her land and regain her balance in fluid motion.
"H-hum," she whispered, glad she had her kendo to save her from looking like a complete loser.
Then Eunmi went into a series of complicated words. Cha Rutt, Henrietta tried her best to mimick what Eunmi showed her. Up to the bowing point, where she lowered her head hesitantly, then lower when Eunmi said for her to bow lower than those higher than herself.
After Eunmi went through them all, she'd, at the end, find Henrietta standing the same as her. It wasn't inept, Henrietta knew strictness. There were similar things in kendo, like sonkyo for example.
"Y-yes," Henrietta answered Eunmi.

"Good," Eunmi said. "Say Jak is to begin. For us, right now, that means I want you to stand in an L stance."
Eunmi shifted back, standing into the stance she spoke of.
"In this stance, your front foot points forward," she patted her left leg, "while your back foot points outward."
She pulled her back leg forward to meet ankle to ankle and drew an L in the air with her index finger.
"It's called this stance because your feet shape an L. When you stand in the L stance," Eunmi said, shifting back, "You place 70% of your weight on the back leg and 30% of your weight on the front. You hold your hands here."
She placed her right hand at her chest, palm up, the other hand held out, bent at about a 40 degree angle with her palm facing down.
"Variations of the hand positions exist and often depend on the pattern or technique you are trying," Eunmi said. "But again, this is one of the stances you will take when I say Say Jak. There is another, but for now we will work in this stance."
Eunmi stood up straight and nodded her head for Henrietta to take the L stance, wanting to make sure she was doing it right.

"O-okay," Henrietta said. She studied Eunmi's form then and tried it herself. Front leg pointed forward, and then the other outward. Wait, were her legs too close together? She looked down at herself and then across at Eunmi and adjusted the position of her legs. Then she brought her hands up, mimicking Eunmi's hand work. It was awkward for her, since she was used to keeping her hands closer to level and judging a forty degree angle was awkward, so she likely messed it up, a bit too far one direction or the other.
"I-is this right?"

Eunmi used her foot (bare, btw), to push Henrietta's front foot forward.
"The distance between your feet should be about your waist length and a half," Eunmi explained. "If you're taller, you can have a wider stance, but you're short, so this is fine."
Eunmi walked around Henrietta and wrapped her arms around to grab Henrietta's wrists.
"More like this," she said, positioning her hands properly. She lingered a moment to ensure Henrietta would hold the stance and then stepped back.
"The most basic kick is the snap kick," Eunmi said, taking a few more steps to Henrietta's side and taking the same position. "You bring your back leg forward and simply kick out to a 90 degree angle. You probably don't have the flexibility to do anything higher than that at the moment, if you can even make this. It takes some time."
Eunmi performed the snap kick, slower than she would normally so that Henrietta could see the motion.
"When you do this, you take your hands and put them to your waist. By thrusting your hips into your kick, you further the momentum and power of the kick as well." She did the kick again, slower, emphasizing this action. She held her foot out, and pointed at it.
"You do not want to hit with your toes by pointing them out. You want to pull your toes back, because if you use this kick to board break or otherwise, you don't want to break them.
"Got it?" she barely waited for a response. "Okay, Say Jak."
She shifted back into the L-stance to emphasize she meant for Henrietta to shift back into it.

Henrietta blushed at the closeness and tensed slightly. When it was over and done with she was in proper form. Then came the kick. Henrietta watched Eunmi move, taking in the information she was being given.
Did she have any flexibility with her feet? Probably not, she couldn't even reach her toes if she tried to stretch. She'd never kicked before, either. She gave it a sort of hesitant try as Eunmi explained it, not that it meant much. Her leg reached 90 degrees but didn't fully extend, as if there was a strain there. Well, there was, Henrietta felt it behind her knee.
When Eunmi ordered it, Henrietta shifted into the stance.

"On Yul, you Ki-yap," Eunmi explained. She stood directly in front of Henrietta now, about a yard and a half distance to be safe from any kicks Henrietta might do. She rose her hand flat in front of but just under her rib cage.
"A ki-yap is a loud yell, you say it to intimidate your opponent," Eunmi said. "You shout from deep within. Otherwise, on each count, each snap of your kick should be accompanied with a 'ch'. This ensures you are breathing properly and exhaling on the kick."
She paused a moment and then said loudly, "HANA!"

Hana? What was hana? Was it counting? Should she kick? Hum! If she didn't act fast she'd look silly, and she needed to progress as fast as possible.
So, with only a moment of hesitation, Henrietta performed the kick. Awkward, slightly under angled and her knee remained slightly bent. She felt that pull behind her knee.

"Dool!" A pause. "Set! Net! Dasut! Eel gup! Yuh dul! Ah hap! Yul!"
Each time Eunmi counted off, she would say the numbers at a near shout. Her face looked completely serious, her brow furrowed ever so slightly and her mouth opened wide to shout. She paced slowly, taking long strides as she watched Henrietta's form. It was clunky, untrained, obvious that it was putting strain on the lavender-haired girl's body. Eunmi listened for the 'ch' exhale and watched to make sure the hand and footing was right each time Henrietta would return to the stance.
She made no corrections, just silent observations.

Henrietta's "kiyap" was the equivalent of a teenage you being told to shout that you love your biggest crush, right then and there. It consisted of stumbling over the words, not being able to get it loud enough and the ch was forgotten in this effort.
By the last kick Henrietta was already tired, Only because the only intense training she'd ever had for her legs had involved squatting, and even the strong legs she might've gained from that had waned into the fragile body she had now.
All of this built up into the final kick. She'd been frantic to keep up with Eunmi's counting and she'd shot her weight forward instead of simply thrusting her hips, in an attempt to make up for things, the reasoning lost somewhere between when she was standing and where she was now, stumbling in the direction of the kick.
She needed a lot of work./

Eunmi stepped forward once Henrietta finished and fixed her stance, kicking lightly at her leg to push it in the right spot. She grabbed Henrietta's fists, from the front this time, and positioned them before stepping back to give Henrietta a moment to catch her breath.
"No, it's not 'ki-yap'," Eunmi said, imitating Henrietta's weak cry. Eunmi rose her hand as she inhaled and then opened her mouth to cry loudly.
"KI-YAP!" The 'p' was virtually silent. It was also rather scary. The sound reverberated around them.
"Pon tay," Eunmi said, twirling her hand around, index finger pointed at the ground and gesturing for her to switch sides. "Other side. Again. Say Jak.
"Hana!" Everything she said was very forceful. Even for as vocal as Eunmi was, she wasn't an extremely loud person. She was different now, much more serious and demanding.

Henrietta almost lost her balance when, for the second time, her legs were kicked. She managed to stay standing, however, as she entered proper form, her hands adjusted by Emi's.
Then she shouting happened. The KI-YAP right in her face and Henrietta jumped slightly. Now her ears ached on top of everything else. Henrietta said nothing.
Then, sides switched, she'd start again. Same problems, though she'd managed to get her voice louder. It wasn't what Eunmi was doing, but it was Henrietta's normal equivalent to a shout. Something quiet and meek, that'd be lost in a crowd of talking people. Not shouting, not loud people.
Oh, this time she did remember the 'ch'.
