The serpent and Horus guards have some significance based on which Goa'uld they serve. That's why everyone was so confused in the episodes Out of Mind and Into The Fire about the mix of the two in the same place.

pssh, if you've seen basically any stargate at all you can figure that one out.

stargate items would be SOOOOO awesome.

Yeah, each Go'auld system lord was supposed to have their own symbol (as in, on their Jaffa's forehead) and their own helmet style. Easier to differentiate between troops in battle, for one thing. They kinda didn't stick to that later on.

The birds and serpents represented shaky alliances, didn't they?

Did they? I think it was just that they had shaky alliances going on, but the helmets were their own.

i think that it was mentioned that the helmets came form the gods symbolic beast. the gods of horus were shown as jackels or falcons. apophis was shown as a snake, seth was that odd long nosed creature (jaffa joke he he) and hathor had bulls before she was overthrown and entombed,

i think it was cos the replicators came up so there wasn't time to deal with the helments andn the little bug thingies

Or because none of the actors could see their way in those helmets. Did you ever notice that? None of the Jaffa could see where they were going!

but thats what stunt extras are for, you can't have the main cast walking into walls, thatwould just be rude
