{Ho snappages!}
arrow Weyr Lake: Southern Shore
Caylith banked high to the left over the water, the surface of which glittered in the sun as if thousands of diamonds were submerged there. Further down the herdbeasts grunted and plowed away from their side of the lake, not intelligent enough to remember that the dragon had eaten -and eaten well- two days beforehand. Perhaps it was a miracle that she had at all: it had not been more than a sevenday since the passing of Liraelth, Benden's senior queen. Her rider Niviki had been left a shadow of herself, and had not been seen or heard from in just as long. It was common rumor in the Weyr that A'sh -the Weyrleader- was spending all of his time caring for her. Riding loosely with her straps sagging (an awful habit born from learning to fly with ease), Delain smiled grimly and thumped the gliding dragon affectionately. Caylith rumbled in pleasure and landed in the soft sand that was the lake's shore. She turned delicately in a circle as her rider "undid" her riding straps and dropped to the sand. With a gesture the latter of the pair ordered her partner into the water. "Go wet yourself. The Hatching should be soon, and if we must entertain the Lord Holders then I want you looking your best." With A'sh still grieving for the "loss" of his dear Niviki the "default Weyrwoman" thought it best that he stay away from the after-Hatching proceedings. It would certainly be enough to prove that she cared for his loss, and despite events now would be as good of a time as any to start ingratiating herself with the older man. Though she herself was only seventeen Turns old, her mount was reaching sexual maturity. Would it be in three months or two that the gold would be three Turns old? Either way... if A'sh wished to remain the Weyrleader, his bronze would have to catch Caylith. They didn't have much of a choice in the matter: dragons were impartial to their human rider's own choices to a varied degree. It would happen, and while the girl wanted the moment to be special with someone of her choosing... Well, it's for the Weyr. The amused voice of her submerged dragon interceded her thoughts. "You needn't worry. For us, it comes naturally. The politics of love are a barbaric but forgiving trial for all." The light-hearted comment was met with a heavy sigh, and then Delain grinned. Water ran off of Caylith's golden head as the dragon lifted it out of the water. With slow dignity she padded through the shallow lake back to her rider, her broad back visible behind her. Overhead a fair of firelizards burst into sight, trumpeting in their sweet voices as they dived under the waves created in the dragon's wake. For the second time the blonde-haired woman sighed: she wanted one of those dainty creatures for herself, but had been too shy to ask for an egg. Now that she was Weyrwoman... 'Responsibility, privilege and hardship', as my foster mother would say about leadership. Eh, old girl?

(Josie! It seems we're at it again, eh?)
arrow Weyr Lake: Southern Shore
Andromeda watched the queen's descent to the lake from her weyr in the cliff side. A sneer marred her handsome face, and with snapping green eyes she turned her gaze to the green dragon that was her life-long partner. Up. Now. Arith grumbled irritably. With a laziness born of idleness the dragon got up and stretched like a long, lithe cat, her mouth gaping in a silent yawn. The sunlight filtered through her thin wing membranes and made a green canopy upon the warm rock, also casting its sickly shade onto her rider. While bowed in such a position Andromeda scrambled up onto Arith's back, seating herself between the two front ridges along the dragon's spine. Obeying some silent command the green tipped forward off of the high cliff, dropping precariously before the wind filled her wings. Together they glided down to the lake, joining Caylith and her rider on the shore just as the gold was ordered into the lake. Andromeda gave the Weyrwoman a smile with no warmth in it from atop her mount. We saw you down here and though it would be nice to drop in. Arith loves her sister so much. She patted the dragon between her legs (unfortunately, in the same manner that a master might pet an obedient dog) and then dropped down to the ground. With a gesture of dismissal she sent Arith off to the Feeding Grounds, not bothering to watch the beast go. Anything new, Weyrwoman? Andromeda stressed the last word pointedly, her smile too bright for it to be taken as an insult. But she didn't make it sound like a compliment, either.

"Yes... but it isn't all that bad. Good things happen when there are good leaders." Delain nodded sagely but said nothing. When a shadow passed over them she looked up to see a green belly overhead. She was readying a greeting until Caylith hissed sibilantly, her eyes a pale shade of red. Startled by her dragon's response the girl turned to stroke the enormous head. No sooner had she done that than Andromeda was speaking. A grimace was the first thing on her face, but with an effort Delain managed a sickly smile for the older rider, her head swiveling around to focus on... well, not a rival, but certainly someone who was supremely jealous of her station. Oh, she knew of the green rider's dislike for her, and doubted strongly that the proud woman would come down from her weyr for a chat. No, nothing new. Arith is looking well. While she spoke Delain reached up and scratched the bony ridge over Caylith's eye. The dragon sighed blissfully and shut her eyes (much to her rider's relief). With her other hand she readied the bucket of oil she'd brought with them and started to rub it into the warm golden hide, causing it to gleam like a newly forged ring in the sunlight.

{Love ya' to death 'Meda, but this sort of delay isn't good for a beginning role play.
Hmmmm... -Stirs up more drama.- This should get people to drop a post in. A simple, unified event.}
arrow Dara's Weyr
You're saying it won't be long now? Was Delain's quiet response to the Healer, who shook his head sadly. The two stood in a quiet corner of the green rider's weyr, somewhere that was (hopefully) out of ear shot for the diseased woman. While Delain and her mother and never been close (in fact, most of the time the older woman ridiculed her only daughter out of spite) it was still an emotional moment. Dara was dying of the same genetic affliction that had been in their family for generations, and if she wasn't mistaken was soon to start in herself. The Healer knew this as well, though he didn't ask about it. It would do the Weyr no good to know that in a few years it might be losing this Weyrwoman as well. Delain sighed, and in a fit of anger turned and slammed her fist into the stone wall of the weyr. She pressed her forehead to the cold stone and squeezed her eyes shut, willing the rest of the world to fade. A minute later slimy hand on the back of hers startled the girl from her silent grief. The Healer was slapping on the salve known as numbweed, tsk tsking her for her irrational display of emotion. She stared unrecognizingly at him and then shook the man away, soothed in some obscure way by the pain in her hand. Resolutely Delain crossed the room, covering her nose and mouth with her arm as she drew near. Lord, what was that god awful stench? Her question was answered almost soon as her mother's cot materialized from around the corner of the weyr. Dara's cot was surrounded with plates of half-eaten food in various states of decay. Again the anger flared: WHY hadn't she taken care of herself? And yet Delain knew. Her mother was by far the most reviled rider in the weyr: worse, even, than the sadistic Andromeda. While the both of them cared only for themselves, at least Andromeda set limits for herself. Of course the green rider would not have accepted help in taking care of herself, or even allowed her only child to have been alerted. Why, if it wasn't for one brown rider's "concern" (obviously, he was a bedmate) then Dara might have passed away without even meeting with her daughter. As if she knew she was being thought of her mother shifted to look. A spasm of pain and hatred rippled across a face that was not that of the diseased. Why, her body looked completely healthy! Delain shuddered visibly, glad and yet terribly jealous that this disease could not afflict others. When she spoke her forced pleasantness sounded genuine, of all things. Hey ma... you're looking as beautiful as ever. What will those riders think when there's no more Dara around..? Her voice cracked on the last syllable, and Delain knelt at the bedside amongst the plates of old food. Teary-faced the girl took her mother's hand only to have it snatched away. Dara's spiteful voice was like a bone saw on the ear, sharp and cruel. "They'll think precisely what you think, Weyrwoman. Now get out: you're no child of mine. Go back to that foster b***h of yours." Despite being prepared to receive such a harsh rejoinder Dara's words were like a slap to the face. Delain gave a sob and shook her head. Her hands -moving of their own accord- began to pluck at the fabric of the woman's blouse, aching to comfort the dying rider more for her own sake than hers. It was amazing that in the midst of all this decay that her mother could look so beautiful, but she managed. For the third time in the past ten minutes Delain grew unaccountably angry: she grabbed Dara's arm and squeezed it hard enough for her to look up and glare sharply at her offspring. How arrogant can you get!? You won't let anyone care for you, and yet you care enough to die looking your best! Right!? Of course right! You... She paused in her rant; Dara had suddenly gone lax. As if with some final effort the woman reached for her and seized Delain's arm, pulling the girl in close enough to hear her final words. "Give up... I always... hated you..." And I loved you, ma. Her words fell on deaf ears. Dara's eyes widened as if she were staring into some far off place. Through her tear-blurred vision Delain saw some horrible prediction of her future: the resemblance between the two was so uncanny that to her it seemed that it was herself lying there. The Weyrwoman gave a low moan and pressed her forehead to the hand that the spiteful rider had pulled away earlier, hearing the terrible roar of her mother's green far outside the weyr. She could almost feel the moment when the dragon disappeared Between, and grew tense as she awaited the death keen of the other dragons for the death of one of their own.
