There is a good possibility the thief was also trying to see the dog and see how big it was, if it was big enough to handle, or too big that it would eat him. Dogs are usually a helper in preventing theft. My mom's dog barked at 3am once, woke us up, her boyfriend saw someone peeking in the windows at our neighbors, and he ran out screaming. Dog barking helped. Thieves go to houses and knock so they can case the house, seeing if someone is home. Once someone doesn't answer the front, the try the back, and if someone still doesn't answer, then they go in the house. The dog might've saved everything from getting worst. Barking dogs are the biggest deterant to people breaking in, they don't want to deal with that. If there was no dog, it would have been bad. Thieves will break locks, so even if something is locked, like the gate or the back door, they will break it to get to where they want to.
"My step dad's a cop, and he was explaining that criminals will try to learn about their target before trying anything. More than likely if he stuck around to knock on windows and ring the doorbell, he was the type who tries to figure out what time you're home. and if you are home, he probably poses as a salesperson. "
What that person says is true, some thieves are very smart. And since no one opened the front, he tried the back. I would say, keep sharp objects near you when things like that happen.
"But I mean seriously, think about it Why would A thief come to the windows and knock on them? They'd wanna be as quiet as possible."
Only when they don't want people noticing them, but if it's an hour where people are awake, he's going to act normal, knocking first, since daylight hours are the most common times for people to be at work, so a completely empty house. They want to appear normal. He went around back probably when he saw the lady walking her dog. If she saw him, he saw her. He tried another angle. I say again, having the dog probably saved things from getting worst.
All this can happen in any neighborhood. Suberia or not.

Kopalani ok, well let me say this, where do you all live? Some nice house in california? your parents pay for everything? x3 So I really dont think you know what your talking about. Florida wiseass. Tampa, FL, and it's not a big house. And lets see, I'm 25, married and living on my own. I know the difference between robbings and theft, I've lived in the ghetto, I've lived in complexes, I've lived in nice houses, I've moved alot in my own town to different sections. All what I said can happen to anyone, anywhere. Some places are more rough where the person will jump you (which has happened to my friend) and some places more nice, where my freakin car got stolen, from the street in the middle of the night, in a nice neighborhood, so don't start with me! I've spent 4th of Julys in places where if we went outside, we would've been shot, so ya know, what do you really know?

Ignornant and closeminded is what I hate to see. I was stating facts. I bet you never stepped one foot into a true ghetto. I never over exagerate. Stating truths about florida and thefts and the crime in certain areas. Like never have a coach purse when you live close to Nebraska Ave...

And how exactly is this a pity party? nobody's going "like omg how unfortunate" "how could you argue with a poor 16year old" or whatever else you can think of...
no offense but i think it's because you finally realize that other people are smarter than you in this aspect (not saying you're stupid at all though)

ya i had something like that happen to mea couple years ago. i was sleeping and it was like 2-3am and i woke up cause my dog was barking we have stray cats in the neighborhood so i figured she was barking at one outside the window or something, so i told her to stop. the next morning i got up and our gate was open the night before it had been closed with the lock on. the lock was on the ground. at that point my heart stopped for a min cause i realised that someone had been outside my window the night before but thank god my dog was in my room or they probably would have come in. i had Lab/ German Shepard mix at the time and she wasn't mean per-say but was very protective.

I love when doggies are protective. Not necessarily mean, but just protective...or at least loud and intimidating. Cookie's not at all a mean/aggressive dog..she doesn't even like it when we horse play with the other dogs because it scares her i guess (idk why though)
But at least her bark's intimidating 3nodding that's what i love about big doggies heart
and sounds like your doggie is a pretty dog btw.. Labs and German Shepard's are beautiful 3nodding
