I couldn't name an indie band if it slapped me in the face and called me Susie

Yeah I don't get the indie label. Does an 'indie' band cease being 'indie' once it gets signed? If you define it by the definition 'independant label', it's less like a genre, more like a classification.

I dunno if I listen to indie music. Probably not, I think all the artists I listen to are signed onto record companies.

I don't! :D
But I am kind of picky with my music. I typically don't have anything in my library that I haven't heard somewhere before (TV or movies mostly).

I guess I really can't define it. I don't like soft rock or folkish rock at all. I have some celtic/bagpipe/drumming bands and a music troupe called Wolgemut that plays 'historically inspired entertainment' and I catch them at various rennfests and s**t, but I think that would fall under a folk catagory.

I don't think I do, and if I do it's a damn small amount.

Everyone gets confused by indie because they forget indie means INDEPENDENT. Independent music does not have a specific sound at all.

An indie band can be signed, if its an INDEPENDENT record label. An independent record label is any company that isn't influenced/supported by any of the gigantic companies like Warner, Universal, or Sony.

I could start my own record label, and even if bands signed with me, they'd still be independent, because they aren't beholden to gigantic corporations.

So a lot of you guys are probably listening to independent without knowing it. As long as they aren't signed by Warner, Universal, Sony, or EMI, they are independent. (keep in mind those four have dozens of subsidiaries with different names.)

A lot of te bands I listen to are signed with NuclearBlast, Roadrunner or Century Media, so *shrugs.*

NuclearBlast is indie as far as I can tell...Roadrunner is a subsidiary of Warner, Century Media is independent.

Looks like you were listening to more indie than you thought! 4laugh

Whattayagonnado. They aren't signed with the big four, so they are indie. Like I said before, indie IS NOT A STYLE OF MUSIC. It ranges from your metal to my using typewriters as instruments Vermillion Lies.

Indie discussions make so many people look like fags.

Why?

Idea, instead of everyone saying "I'M NOT SURE WHAT IT MEANS BUT I THINK IT'S THIS" how about look into it. This IS the internet.

Independent music: subculture music that is independent of major producers[1]; music of any genre can be labeled "indie", but especially indie pop[2] or indie rock[3].

1 In popular music, independent music, often abbreviated as indie, is a term used to describe independence from major commercial record labels and an autonomous, do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing.

2 Indie pop is a genre of alternative rock music that originated in the United Kingdom in the mid 1980s, with its roots in the Scottish post-punk bands on the Postcard Records label in the early '80s such as Orange Juice and Josef K and the dominant UK independent band of the mid eighties, The Smiths.

3 Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that most notably exists in the independent underground music scene. It primarily refers to rock musicians that are or were unsigned, or have signed to independent record labels, rather than major record labels. Genres or subgenres often associated with indie rock include lo-fi, post-rock, sadcore, C86, and math rock, to list but a few; other related (and sometimes overlapping) categories include shoegazing and indie pop.

According to that definition I was pretty much correct. Two and three are sort of elaborations on subgenres, which is unneeded. Like I told Xippy, it's any style of music.

Not exactly. It's best to actually look into it yourself, I just quoted small bits off of wikipedia articles.

Nope. And if I do, it's totally unintentional. I don't care if the bands I listen to are signed are not. I just want them to have a good sound, good lyrics, and be semi-melodic.
