I think actions speak louder than words and I haven't seen any discrimination against straight people here.
Or maybe the people who made the picture are just trying to attract those who mostly come to the guild, gay people.
This is like Pride, the ads always suck, only including one woman or female couple while the rest are all men. Or one ethnic person or couple while the rest are white. So I guess thinking about that, I understand where you are coming from, But I still feel like this is too much seeing as I post in this guild all the time and I don't see anything bad against heterosexual people ever, and I feel like if there was many people would be very quick to defend that person.

Pictures, my friend, are worth 1000 words! They speak to the soul more directly than words ever could! The picture at the front of this guild should be inviting to all not just some! Where you say good enough I say do better!

Again I stress that content is not my issue, and for you to accuse me of calling reverse discrimination is quite absurd. I feel the need to air a grievance that is clearly valid.

You are right, there is nothing bad in this guild about being straight, but at the same time it is mentally discouraged by the official posts of this guild. It's an easy fix to make, commission a new banner and add a word in the title of the thread. The latter should have been artfully done long ago.

To be honest, what I see this guild most as is an attempt to show the LGBT community to those who are straight. Many straight people have the issue of not understanding LGBT, and this results in the homophobic reactions that many of us recieve. Knowledge is power, and it's what this guild is about. Knowledge. Knowing more than you came in with. It also allows the LGBT community to learn more from straight individuals about their life, and why they live life the way they do. Thus, the alliance: the trade of knowledge between LGBT and Straights. That is the GSA.

Even in schools, communties, and other forms of civilization, this is the same way.

I know it's true, my love for you;
I jumped into the depths of Hell;
To save you from these rotten swells;
And still, you sing that melancholy dirge.

This completely fails to address my issues with the current representation of the guild. I have no political issue with the content of the guild merely with the representation that straights play no significant part.

Further more, It is fool hardy to assume that this exchange is one way as you so elegantly imply. While I may not understand your community completely you surely have the same difficult as I do when it comes to straight people.
And now the Cerberus, it stands;
Head in heart;
Heart in hand;
I watch to hear that melancholy dirge.

How it presents itself is not an issue, is it? I mean, a single image doesn't sum up the guild, as you said yourself.

As for knowing the straight community, I'd say I know it pretty well. I'm bi; and I just recently discovered this, within the past year. If anything, I'm getting to know the LGBT community moreso than the straight community. I never said it was a one-way transfer of data, and I quote:

Muse of the Soul
It also allows the LGBT community to learn more from straight individuals about their life, and why they live life the way they do.

It's not like straight people are, exactly, an underrepresented group. LGBT people deserve a place that speaks mostly to them, because there are few of them out there. You're coming across as a troll more than anything.

I'll be moving this to the extended discussion subforum later today. Provided everyone refrains from name-calling, this could be an interesting debate. razz

The androgynous group of couples there clearly insinuate gay couples in Japaneses media. Given that the other two are clearly gay and the last is at the very least meant to look like a gay couple it is clear that even if they were meant to be representative of a gay couple. The only real couple on there is of a lesbian family again showing the defiance in acknowledgment of the straight allies.
Its still a man and woman. That makes them straight. It appears that you just won't be satisfied with any answer that disagrees with your premise.

... Holy s**t! We have a picture on the front page! heart :SQUEE:

Eh... erm... that didn't just happen lol. Anyway, I believe that it's fine personally. As someone said earlier, actions speak louder than words ever could and, having been this guild for some time, I have yet to find any descrimination towards any particular group, even hetero. You bring up the introductin thread and how they only put three different subgroups in the invitation. Does that mean that the rest of the LGBT community shouldn't introduce themselves either? No, it just means that who ever set up the thread probably thought of those three while trying to make a title for the thread that seemed appealing.

Now, speaking of the picture, I see nothing wrong with it. I can clearly tell there are the main three represented (homosexual males, females, and a heterosexual couple). And below it is a family teaching their kids not to judge, showing that even a homosexual couple are capable of loving their children (which is trying to break a sterotype) along ith various pins that try to show, in my opinion, that it's okay to have differing veiws.

I don't think this guild is misleading at all, and I'm heterosexual aka straight. Even then, I think that it's more important to stress that it's okay to tell the members of this guild that you are gay/bi/trans since so many people in this world will frown upon those facts. Perhaps it might make the straight people in this guild more comfortable by adding in "straight?" to the title of the sticky, but I wouldn't care if it did.

I agree with Muse_of_the_Soul on the part of schools showing more of the LGBT stuff than the "straight" stuff. A lot of the time, the rainbow banner is the logo for the club since it represents LGBT pride. Why would there ever be a need for a banner for straight pride? We have enough of those people trying to show that by putting down the gay/bi community. Nevertheless, banners can always be made showing the signs for straight and for gay together to represent the GSA.

I would suggest editing your post on th picture on the front page since there is in fact a straight couple. & if you try to refute what I'm saying by stating that the couple doesn't "appear" straight or that the guild isn't promoting straights enough due to the picture being behind the text, I'll tell you this: You can always PM one of the mods with a picture you find to be more suitable for the straight couple and explain why. As for the latter, I personally would rather be promoting gays and bi's more than straights since I wouldn't doubt that the majority of users on this website are heterosexual.

But this faction isn't just about the GLBT community. It's about the bridge between the LGBT community and heterosexual people..

Honestly I would like to see an equal representation of Gays, Straights, Bi-sexuals, lesbians, transgenders, etc. I mean the point of this faction isn't just about GLBT community but the bridge between the LGBT community and heterosexual people.. neutral

well...here is a lot of "us vs them" around...but i don't see any problem...

i'm straight, and i hang out here from time to time...i give my opinion and up until now i've never seen any blunt discrimination or anything that's really against straights...

but what do i know...i'm here occasionally.....though it's still a little discouraging...all the topics saying what they do...like the guy said.....topic that have as title stuff that, sadly, does not include the straights...it is discouraging.....

I do think there's a bias. However, I don't think it's anyone else's responsibility to balance than the straights'. If you want to be heard, you will make yourself heard - that's how the discussions are started.
Not many lesbians start topics about male homosexuality, and not many transgendered people start topics about being cisgendered - people talk about things they relate with, that are important issues to them. Heterosexuality is seen as the norm and therewise not so many non-heterosexuals see it as something worth bringing up, since it's something "we need to defend ourselves against".
How about making a topic about something straight-related instead, and helping us get started on it? Like exactly the discrimination faced by straight people somehow involved in the GLBT-community, or just how you feel about being straight?

Based on the idea of this guild, everyone here should be equal and allied. Therewise, no sexual orientation should be held less important, but it's the ones involved within to make it visible. If you won't hold your head up, nobody will.

The issue with the introduction thread. There's only so much space for a title. It doesn't mention polysexual, pansexual or asexual people either. And probably others that I'm forgetting. There's other people that could be thought of as under-represented too. It's not just straight people. For example, only about 1% of the population is asexual so it makes sense that that would not be one of the groups that is really mentioned. A vast majority of the population is heterosexual so maybe they don't feel the need to actively mention the vast majority if that's not probably going to be the majority of people in the guild. The person that made the title was probably going for what would not take up too much space and what would cover the majority. The guild is already called Gaian Gay-Straight Alliance. So straight is at least mentioned. Others don't even have that.
