I've never read Harry Potter, nor Percy Jackson, but I will gladly recommend Storm Thief, The Haunting of Alaizable(Been a while... I may have spelled this incorrectly) Cray, and Poison, all by Chris Wooding.

Hail, o' great liege of the ancient woods, ruler of the deepest forest...
Well, I'm totally the opposite, I HATE HP series, all the events are so predictable that I felt just as if the author had took it for granted that her readers will be sillly, no offence. I'm just more into more mature literatue (yet still fantasy!).
Should you ever see Andrzej Sapkowski's "The Witcher" (or whatever the title is, it hasn't been translated yet, I believe. It has 7 tomes, only 2 of which are available in the USA for sure), buy it no matter what. Masterpiece.
For something available for sure and less brutal, choose The Earthsea series by Ursula K. Le Guin. Mages, travels, philosophy of life and so on. There is a school for mages there as well, the best tome is definately the second one, Tombs of Atuan, or sth like that (IDK if it was translated literally)
As for HP-alike ones, try Eragon. It is not that predictable yet characters are definately TOO lucky, unfortunately. Dragons, fractions in conflict, war, and that one bad-a** who seems to be undefeatable. I still haven't read the last tome.
The Ravens are on the wings!

GREAT. Reading is a sport that every man should be a victim of. Harry Potter and Percy Jackson are two book characters I am particularly fond of. Some other series that might suit your interest are:
Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead(infinity times better than twilight) A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket Cirque Du Freak by Darren Shan Hunger Games The Sammy Keyes Series by Wendelin Van Draanen Inkheart Trilogy by Cornelia Funke (you should actually try to read ALL of Miss Funke's books, they are particularly stunning.)
Hrn, these are the only ones I can think of of the top of my head, sorry. I'll post again when I think of more - because there are a WHOLE LOT more.
