That's true, you do have to be very careful about pesticides and ferts that they may have used.

From my experience with them, I don't think they use their water dish too much on a daily basis. The only times I'd ever seen them go in was during feeding when they were all hopping around after flies. Granted, I didn't watch them 24/7 so they could have taken a dip at other times. Like you said, they're also very tiny so when they do go in, it's not too bad. I guess another "simple" option if you wanted more water and a better filter would be a false bottom, but those kind of scare me =x

>.< I forgot about the misting system. If one did a waterfall, one would still need that unless they wanted to go in with a spray bottle a few times a day.

Yeah. For me it would just be easier to set up a misting system. Maybe not as cheap. But easier. Though I'm sure everyone could agree on that.

Plants to fill a 55 would be cheap enough at wal-mart or possibly even through e-bay. ]
I just want to jump in to say you have to be very careful when buying live plants from stores since there is no telling what has been sprayed on them. Someone in the mantis forum lost several mantids do to a contaminated plant and though I am no frog expert I am pretty sure they would be even more sensitive to something like that.

If you are not fond of crickets you might want to look into blue bottle flies. They are pretty sizable and I would think could be used as a staple diet versus crickets if you wanted to go with something on the larger side. You would most likely have to order over the net unless you have a super awesome exotic store near you though.

Walking sticks would be pretty awesome but keep in mind they eat plants and you will need to insure you can provide them with fresh leaves year round.

I was hoping you would comment on this when I mentioned the insects. <3

Yeah. It seems like every care sheet I've ever read has said something about not going with store bought plants, or.. if you do.. then make sure to wash them off really well.

Oh my God. I forgot about the blue bottle flies. Thank you for saying that!! I'll definitely check into that if I decide to go with the WTF over the walking sticks. - And unfortunately.. living in the middle of no where kind of limits my options when it comes to anything. So, I'll have to order online.

Right. I read that somewhere. Do you think the setup that I mentioned would work for the walking sticks? I could put the kinds of plants they like in there, and then of course I could order the leaves somewhere, I'm sure.. just in case.

I think you could make a set up like that work really well for walking sticks if you wanted to. You will want to do some research and find a species that will work good with the sort of internal environment you got going on but walking sticks for the most part are pretty easy. You could be a lot more laid back about any sort of watering system or internal mister then and those wouldn't be required unless you really wanted them.

Another option you could toy around with is some praying mantises. There are some species that do pretty good in group settings as long as you provide enough space per a mantis and plenty of food. These same mantises tend to also be the type that prefer flies and smaller prey items (that is in part why they tend not to cannibalize.) There will always be some risk involved with such set ups, but if you are willing to look at that as the more natural course of how things can play out, you might have fun with it.

Finally I might suggest looking into some tailless whip scorpions. They can be kept communally and are something I would love to one day set up a naturalistic cage for. They look so cool. ---> Awesome Bug Ahoy!!!

Awesome. I might definitely look more into ideas for the setup I had, then. I'll definitely post pictures, if I do. :) - If I were to do walking stick set up, I probably wouldn't have a misting system. I'd just mist them by hand.

I thought about those as well. And I don't know if you remember or not, but I had actually mentioned how I've loved the orchid mantis for several years. I may go with them eventually, but for right now I would feel more comfortable with going with the walking sticks. It's not like I'll end up owning the walking sticks for the rest of my life, so I can always get the mantids later on. - I had heard about them being little cannibalistic, and how you shouldn't put them in groups. :( Though as I said before.. I may experiment with them later.. but for right now, I'm actually quite interested in the stick bucks.

kfj;lakjsdfkla -- There are very few insects that don't creep me out. Those are not one of them. By name I didn't know what they were.. until I clicked on it and I realized that it was the same thing they used in a Harry Potter movie.. as someone stated in a top comment. - If you set up a cage for them someday, I'd love to see it. But they just creep me out too much to own one.

EDIT:
I've read that walking sticks like blackberry leaves. Would it be possible for me to put a thornless plant in there? Or some other kind of plant that they really like? If I could keep the plant alive, it would keep me from having to worry about buying them leaves, or finding some from someone's garden, lol.

Ah! If Krissim thinks it's a good tank for walking sticks then I'd take her word for it (over my comment about wide vs high tanks) She's a lot more knowledgeable than I am on the subject, I've really only started keeping insects seriously & shes actually helped me quit a bit. I have mantises not stick insects, but I'm having fun with it, I'm glad I took the leap to keeping "creepy crawlies" lol.
