"But I'm a Cheerleader" Is a great movie. It has both gay, and lesbian, but it focuses mostly on lesbian. It's part comedy, part romance, part just amazing. I highly recommend it~

I know that netflix has a section for Gay and Lesbian films and shows (most are foreign). I personally enjoy Queer as Folk. Tourchwood (an offshoot of Doctor Who) has Captain Jack Harkness who will sleep who anything. In this show he is paired with another guy

I like

1 Girl 5 Gays (though that's more of a Q&A show)
Rick and Steve (cgi cartoon, ran for 2 seasons and off the air now, but it's on hulu)
RuPaul's Drag Race (drag queen competition, like Project Runway but awesome)

Also the Venture Bros is a great show. It's not strictly gay, but there are several gay characters and occasional gay subplots.

United States of Tara managed to have a character who is a gay teen who is one of the most realistic portrayals of a gay character on television I've ever seen. He's a normal kid, his orientation isn't what defines his character, and he had problems, character flaws and developments, and storylines that weren't centered solely on the fact that he was gay.
To me, that's how it should be done. Don't make a "gay character", make "a character who happens to be gay".

Other than that, unfortunately it's hard for me to find movies about gay protagonists that doesn't end in a really long needlessly graphic sex scene or suicide. :/

It seems gay romance movies come in two flavors, porn, or the same story about their tragic forbidden love that gets recycled over and over and over.

That's why I liked the movie "Mambo Italiano". For once there's a movie that doesn't make it seem like being gay is this horrible tragic misfortune that will only end in cinematic award winning death.

To be honest I haven't seen a lot of LGBT-themed movies. I hear Brokeback Mountain is good, of course, why wouldn't it be? Two very attractive men, Jake Gyllanhaal and Heath Ledger, play the leading couple. razz And La Cage aux Folles is hilarious from what I've heard, as well as it';s American remake The Birdcage.
And those are really the only ones I can think of now...

I tend to generally consider Brokeback Mountain overhyped. I mean, it's essentially "two guys cheat on their wives for decades on end but it's okay because they're both dudes." I mean, by the end of the movie it takes place in the 80s. They didn't need to hide their relationship like some dark secret anymore. There's places they could have gone to live a happy life together. neutral

I haven't seen it so I can't really agree/disagree with you there. razz But the critics liked it and it was a box-office success, so I just figured. I'll have to see it to see if I can agree with you there.

Oh! I just thought of a really good one. Has anybody seen Pariah?

Sorry if it's already been mentioned, but I didn't notice it if it has.

I think it's somewhat difficult to find decently made LGBT movies. I know someone else posted it before me, but they either seem to be porn or not very well done. I believe so far in my search for interesting shows I've found a few that interest me.

1) Film adaptations of Sara Waters novels. Her novels are absolutely breathtaking I adore them. Some people might argue they follow a cliche romance, but in reality they simply follow the style they were created for and are wonderful Victorian model stories. She uses a form of writing people hardly use anymore (something similar to The Importance of Being Earnest) Currently I believe there are only three movie versions of her novels right now (unless you live in the U.K. then there shoudl be four). Affinity (lesbian), Tipping the Velvet (lesbian) and Fingersmith (lesbian) anddd The Nightwatch (out in the U.K. it is a lesbian, gay and bisexual piece.

2) Imagine me and You is one of my favorite lesbian films. It's modern a comedy, but it just has a little bit of a difference from the traditional to make it interesting.

3) Exs and Ohs is a Canadian t.v. show that to my knowledge is only two seasons. It's short, sweet but a very interesting show. I like it much better than the L Word and the characters are far more believable.

4) If you like general stereotypical comedy the Big Gay Sketch Show is pretty darn funny.

5) Fried Green Tomatoes. It's one of those classics here in the south everyone watches, but people honestly never knows it's a lesbian story. It's based off Flag's novel where the relationship is there and in the story she gives all the signals. The film version has hints of it, but they have changed it around to make it for a more mainstream audience. Changed or not it's still a beautiful story.

6) Boy's Don't Cry...;3; I love this transgender film even if it makes me cry everytime I see it.

7) Lastly a few randomly decent films, but not over the top awesome. Gray matters, Gia, Girl Play and The Kids are Alright. I know most people hate The Kids are Alright, and I disliked it at first. Then I kinda let the idea sink in and there is def a deeper meaning there you don't get the first time.

I saw someone mention Lost and Delerious a good film, but absolutely nothing like the book. I find it strange how different they are.

Sorry I know pretty much all my suggestions are lesbian in nature...but well you know I like those the most so ;3;

What about South Of Nowhere? It's no longer on T.V., but Logo had it on their website and they still might have it on there.

Prayers for Bobby was really sad, as well A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story. Boy's Don't Cry was also a good one.
