Something in his expression twinged at her tone. "I-I don't know. Just . . ." It wasn't exactly the truth and neither was it a full blown lie, but it was the most he could say at any rate. If he tried to tell her about the fragment within Thor and his suspicions of its influence, he'd only pass out before a word could pass his lips. He couldn't imagine how frustrating it must have been for Bells, seeing only the side effects and none of the reasoning; it wasn't a bed of dead red roses for him either, though.

Almost as an afterthought, he sent a small spark her way just as she rushed towards him. A battle was still a battle, whatever words were spoken. He would own up to them later. "Let's j-just finish this first." And quickly, before he was overcome with dark thoughts again.

"That's it?" Belladonna asked in a broken voice that she wanted to fix, but was too raw to do so. She threw her hands up angrily, in a dramatic huff. "Can you not tell me? Is that it?" The hurt was turning to anger, shifting into another thing. That stupid mark had caused them nothing but pain, Mort more so than Belladonna, but she was getting hurt by it too. It wasn't fair! Why couldn't they just be happy and falling in love? Why?!
The little bolt shocked the witch quite literally, and she let out a sharp cry and took a step back. Whatever anger that had dissipated from him had instead transferred to her and she took a few more halting steps forward.
"Fine! We'll finish this! But what else can't you tell me? What else haven't you told me?!"
An angry hand fumbled for a card that Belladonna threw up into the air above her, while she continued to shout.
"Unresolved feelings about Gene, anything else? Any other girls? Any other secrets?!"
Later on she might cry over this, be ashamed and beg for forgiveness, but right now she only knew the fight. She only knew the drive to win and prove herself.

A heavy armored hand landed on the witch's shoulder then and she looked up at the Death Knight, all clad in black armor and staring at her with a skeleton's blank, wickedly smiling face. She nodded once at it before she flicked her hand and the card and Knight flew toward Mort, lance poised for attack.

Mort winced visibly as she spoke like her words were weapons themselves, each syllable cutting deeper than any of her cards ever could. He opened his mouth but nothing came forth, and he stood there looking like a fool until he felt the tug of FEAR coming from her card and was met with Death's grin; and at that his mouth clamped shut as his eyes trailed down to the large lance as its side.

He'd never had good history with those. Today was no different.

Mort barely had time to brace himself before the weapon pierced his abdomen, throwing him back like a doll with a loud cry of pain. He stumbled down to one knee, holding the new gaping hole it had ripped therein and feeling the congealed blood begin to flow between his fingers. "Ghhh...!" Jackdamn did he hate lances. First Hel, then that Hunter, and now from his own ghoulfriend!

Slowly he got to his feet, slightly hunched and still clutching his wound as Thor powered up. For a few moments it took all he could to look Bells in the eye. And then he tried: he tried to form the words to clear the air, but all he could do was mouth them unintelligibly until the dull throb in his head reached uncomfortable levels and he saw double. And then he stopped, issued a sigh through his nose, and set his jaw. "After this," Mort promised, his voice surprisingly quiet. "A-After this will do best to explain."

And then Thor, finished with its power up, hurtled a ball of green electricity the witch's way.

The anguished sound of Mort's pain finally snapped Belladonna back to her senses. The skeletal Knight took a heavy step backwards, before he disappeared into black fog that faded into the air.
"Oh Hecate, Mort... I..." Belladonna took a few cautious steps toward him, but he stood and looked up at her. It was a broken look, as though she had partially caused this and had asked for what was happening, but also that he would make this right.
Maybe that was worse, the fact that right now it felt like this was the only thing in the world: Just Mort and Belladonna and this stupid fight. But this wasn't the end, life would go on after this fight ended. Their lives would go on, maybe together and maybe not... But that seemed less likely now that Mort was speaking.
Belladonna leaned forward to hear, taking one last step toward him before her vision was filled with green.

For once, she didn't scream or cry or anything. Instead the witch crumbled to the ground without a sound. Pieces of her clothing were burning, there were holes that showed skin on the other side, but it only took Belladonna a moment to right herself.
"Alright... You better." Her voice was hoarse as she stood, her hands shaking and a small tick forming on the right side that made her head tilt in a jerking fashion. The electricity was getting to her, and she didn't like that. She did her best to throw a card, but she was off and it didn't hit as hard.
I'm going to lose. I'm going to be weak and he'll hate me and...
Belladonna shook her head to clear the thoughts and the tick, but they stayed. They kept on going.

"Don't apologize," he said in a stronger voice than intended, then hastily added in a more normal one, "Please." Whether or not it hit as hard as Belladonna wanted, Mort could still feel his Fear shield waning. Oh thank Jack. As much as there was a deep-set, new need lash out without reason, there too was an equally drained feeling setting in, and he clung to it and fought the unwarranted thoughts.

He gave her a small nod and slowly lifted his hand off the wound, flicking blood off to the side. "Should, ah . . . should practice your spells while here," he suggested. "Will n-need them s'much as just cards." Mort's eyes strayed to the consistent twitches in her hand and grimaced; it wouldn't be permanent thanks to her shield, thank Jack, but it was not a pleasant sight regardless. He restricted the flow of energy in his arms to a bare minimum until contact would at worst cause a sharp static shock and then ran at her once more, Thor held at the ready as his other fist sailed through the air.

The initially strong reply almost made Belladonna begin to get angry again, but his soft insistence at the end changed her mind. The twitch worsened, and with her left hand Belladonna reached over and held her right arm close to her side.
"I don't have attack magic... Not really. I'm still learning. Right now its just for show." Her right hand flopped in way of indicating something around her. "The Death and The Moon are the only cards I can do anything with and I failed at healing myself..."
Now she was going to start pitying herself, which was still pretty bad.

But they were still in battle and Belladonna was starting to wear thin, so though she started to dodge his attack, she only ended up turning a shoulder to him and bracing herself. His fist made contact with her forearm and she stumbled backwards, a lousy card zinging just past his head. The little bit of left over static made her shake all over, but she got a hold of herself right before she fell. It didn't stop the awkward almost falling, stumbling action she had to take, but finally she managed to pull herself up.
Hecate, she was really going to lose. She hadn't even gotten a hit on him that last time and now she was really feeling the cracks in her FEAR shield.
Good. Maybe this would end quickly and they could get to repairing the damage that had been done.

That . . . wasn't heartening to hear. Acting as if a card hadn't just whizzed by his head, Mort hopped back and gave her some space, flicking his hand several times to ward off cramping. "Weapon can only do so much," he stated. "Next time might heal, next time might not. Next time Death might not save, next time might not do nearly enough. Need to know how to fight more than one way."

He turned his body to the side, arms held defensively about him. "You're a witch, Bells. Spells're your domain. Try."

Try.
So now they were back on friendly terms, otherwise he wouldn't have suggested such to her. For a moment Belladonna only frowned at him, her right arm still awkwardly twitching from time to time. But... He was right after all. Usually he was.
Belladonna took a deep breath and let her arm go, both hands coming forward to make a triangle with thumb and forefinger right in front of her navel. Another deep breath and a small, pink light began in the center. Another breath in and out and it grew bigger. For a moment it faltered and Belladonna almost gave up, but his words still rang in her head.
This was her fight. This was her magic.

The witch took a step back and gasped as the little light flickered into what looked like pink, shimmering water before she flicked it forward toward him. Had he not been defending himself, the physical form of her FEAR would have hit for more, but as it were, it still hit.
A small, uncertain laugh broke out from the witch and she couldn't help but punch the air, however feebly.
"Was that ok?" Strange how minutes ago they had been shouting angrily and now she was looking for his approval.

Mort watched the manifestation with some fascination, trying to deduce what exactly she had conjured up. It shimmered like water, but it seemed so insubstantial . . . Well, right up until it hit him head on; then it was definitely substantial. He grunted with surprise at the force behind the magic, glad he had decided to defend.

"Good, good . . ." He even managed a grim little smile as he pushed his glasses up and retook his defensive stance. "Again."

It was small, silly compared to what had happened before, but... That smile, however small and forced and strange, still gave the witch a bit of hope. Belladonna changed her stance and changed her hands so that the backs of her hands faced him, and took another deep breath. The little pink accumulation of her FEAR manifested at her fingertips, this time a little hard looking. She took another breath, took a step forward... And faltered.
Another quick breath was taken, the light flickered hopefully, but Hecate she was just so tired.

The little pink light only flickered hopefully, but finally died out as Belladonna lowered both hands to her knees, her breath shallow and her whole body aching.
"I-I can't!" In defeat, she shook her head and tired to catch her breath. "I'm sorry... I..." Another huff, but she didn't bother to finish her explanation.

"Mrrr..." He watched her wavering movements for a few moments, just in case she managed to pull another surprisingly powerful piece of magic. But when the pink flecks dissolved before they left her hands, Mort relaxed some.

Attack now! the whisper nudged. She's weak.

He was beginning to feel as tired as she seemed, though, which to him meant this session was coming to a close; here was little point continuing to push her, even if it had been a nice delay.

"Think we're done for now," he said, straightening up and losing the charges in his arms until they were back to normal levels; stiffness and involuntary twitches paradoxically began their work on his fleshy limb, while Thor was conten to hum gently in the background with the occasional flicker of light in its circuits. "Should, ah, we get that tended to?" Mort asked, gesturing to her own twitching hand. "S-Supposed to go away after a few minutes, but..."

The disappointment of not being able to finish, to not complete this task weighed heavy on the witch and she clenched her fists together.
"I-I can try again!" She shouted across the way, but her right hand began to shake violently and she quickly unclenched it. "Batshit..." Belladonna mumbled as she clamped her right arm to her side in hopes that the trembling would stop. Her outfit was ruined, they'd come to a draw with no clear winner and had shouted heinous things at the other. OK, well, actually Mort had hissed them and Belladonna had shouted. Regardless! There were hurts feelings on both side and Belladonna didn't even get the satisfaction of a finished fight.

At his point toward her arm, Belladonna shook it out and held it out to show it was still, but it wasn't. Embarrassed, she grabbed it back and looked down at the ground.
"You shocked me so much... I don't think a few minutes is going to be enough..." Her head twitched to the right and she nearly cried. Instead, she concentrated on having her cards file neatly back to her shaking hands.
"I can keep going if you want. Maybe breaking my shield will make it stop?" Belladonna offered weakly, not able to look at him fully.

She's asking for it. Give it to her!

But it was clear Mort didn't like that plan even as he weighed the possible outcomes. Whenever his arms bothered him with convulsions, he simply took them off until they were stilled again, like cutting the power off and doing a hard reset. So what could he do with a live specimen? Maybe change the charge and try canceling out the flows with a second current? Mort didn't want to risk exacerbating the issue, though, or worse make it permanent.

His brows knitted, laden with guilt. "I-It's never . . . M'sorry . . ." It was a paltry apology for his behavior during the spar, but he didn't know what else to say. He wanted to reach out to her yet stood in his place, all too sure she would run if he got too close. "D-Don't think continual use is good idea; might make s-spasms worse. M'not a doctor, but think letting shield heal n' putting hot pack on should ease trembles. Shield keeps from permanent harm at any rate, so sh-shouldn't deplete it."

He paused, searching for something to say. "O-Out've curiosity, what was thing you conjured?"

Unfortunately for the witch, a removal of limbs wouldn't be possible. At least not without a lot of screaming and shouting and crying and limb flinging before they were exchanged. In any event, Belladonna frowned at him for a few moments before he apologized. Her mouth opened to protest, but instead she closed it and clattered over to him, sluggish and a little clumsier than she liked. There was still a bit of space between them, a distance that could be easily closed by either of them if they took the few steps. But Belladonna had already come so far, that she finally decided she didn't want to be the only one who chased. It was her turn to be the prize.
"You're probably right... A hot pack sounds fantastic right now. Hell, I'd take something cold too. Anything, really." Her gaze focused on the ground as she spoke, unwilling and unsure what to do or where to go from here. Would he escort her back to her room? Would he come in if offered?

It took her a moment to break through her haze, but Belladonna finally looked at Mort straight on. She blinked once and then her face broke into the tiniest of proud smiles.
"Water. I've been studying elemental magic lately. The second one was supposed to be earth, but its so heavy... So dense, its hard to create it, even out of FEAR." A small laugh broke free, a small bird that fluttered from her chest and out, leaving her feeling a little lighter. "Granted, it was only FEAR so it probably wouldn't be the best to drink... But still. Still water."
And she was still a little proud of herself. Never before had she really tried that, not even outside the battle field. Sure a spark of fire here and there, but never something that substantial. It was nice to know she could accomplish something, that her studies were starting to pay off.

"Water, huh? Thought so . . ." He grimaced as the hole the knight had torn into began to throb for his attention, clutching at the torn clothes and flesh; it was only with the battle now at a close that Mort began to feel the extent of wounds and fatigue he had garnered. But he still managed a smile, encouraged by the one she gave. "Think was pretty good for first go at, though. Practice'll make it very formidable m'sure." He was lucky he hadn't spurred her to try fire.

She was right there, like right there. He could reach out and touch Bells if he wanted, but his aching arms wouldn't listen, though even if they did he wasn't sure he could . . . Not until he cleared the air at least. Assuming she'd let him afterwards. "I, uh, have cool packs," he told her, "for obvious reasons, but think would benefit more from having both. Can, ah, heat them with spell. But should save for later . . ." He gestured with a nod towards the benches. "Best idea right now is rest n' stretch arm out, so muscle d-doesn't tighten or loosen too much. Helps spasms like smoothing out wrinkled cloth, could say. It, ah, might hurt some, so promise to answer questions if you try it."
