[HH 5 vs. ??] Unlikely Heroes (Ami/Lex/Mads/Ryan/Wilson)

Ami was caught between a whimper and a scream when Wilson broke through her hysteria. She was annoyed for a second that he was yelling so loudly, only to realize that was absolutely stupid. He was trying to help her. Trying to get her to move.

The mantis crawled elsewhere, and Ami grabbed Wilson's arm, using the momentum to swing herself around, clinging to his side for a moment so she could catch her breath. "I ... I'm sorry."

She was an idiot. She wasn't ready for this- not by a long-shot. Whatever bravado she'd thrown around herself, the protective sheath of assurance was gone. Ami let go of Wilson's side and fumbled with one of her guns sending a shot to it's leg. Her hand was shaking the moment she pressed the trigger, terrified for a split second that it might hit someone. It wasn't a very good shot, but it was all she could do for the moment.

Ami was scared, there was nothing more to it.

Wilson wanted to give Madeline the same look he gave Ryan and Lex. “Really.”

“Really. You too?!” If his canons didn’t have blades he would have facepalmed. He winced when the claws swiped him in the side. He clicked his tongue softly, but silently told himself to keep moving. The pain was nothing. Wilson kept himself still as Ami grabbed his arm for support while she shot the mantis. Despite the chaos, he eyed her carefully. He would have wrapped an arm around her shoulder, maybe pulled her close. He would have planted a kiss to her temple, but not right now. Not unless he wanted to be stupid or hurt her with his weapons.

He slipped out of Ami’s grasp and pointed a canon at the monster before he doused it in a cloud of green gas.

"..." Lex took an deep breath, slightly annoyed that Wilson had been able to calm Ami down, despite the taller man's 'orders' for everyone to not flip out. Flipping out was going to lead to death - he'd read enough novels to know that.

Another crack of brilliant gold energy burst forth from the barrel, ringing clear into the monster's leg.

Madeline screeched as the Mantis swung at her, loping backwards a few feet and wincing. Okay, stupid mantis thing, two could play at this game. Ignoring her little group of fiends, the Sun trainee hoisted Arsen again, his grip a comfort in her hands as she swung a second time.

"Yes, really," She told Wilson afterwards, gritting her teeth, "it keeps the mood from sinking - ya know - downdowndown."

Or somethin' like that.

They were attacking with a vengence now, the sheer number of them able to do a fair amount of damage. Not that it really made a difference, as even the claws to parts of his sheathed wings were applied, an ordinarily touchy subject for him. He simply chose two at random to attack.

He moved quickly before he lashed out, claws overshooting the pair and trying to draw them in, squeezing them between his claw and forearms, trying to dig his spines into them. Not caring that the pressure pained him as well.

"One thing at a time Rya-AHHHHH."

Suddenly she was swept into a bonecrushing hug, right up against the one man she most definitely did not want to be squeezed up to. She would've called cooties if she wasn't more concerned with the spines pressing into her back. Her hands fumbled, first trying to push Lex away from her, and then to try and press the mantis head away from her.

The claws. It was the claws she needed to focus on. It would take a jolt, something quick to make them stop. Ami leaned to the side, pressing her back to the painful spines so she could angle around and get a shot on the mantis. She took her gun to the mantis' head and tried to shoot something decent, but ended up grazing the side- Kat would've frowned at her poor marksmanship.

After that, she couldn't care less. She just let herself be crushed against Lex because she physically couldn't break this stupid mantis' grip. At least Ami could say Lex was handsome- she was oddly thinking of how disgusting it would be to to be smashed up next to someone like Dakota or Rin.

She was seriously thinking about people she did or didn't want to be slammed against. Yin didn't need to kill her anymore. She had embarrassment to do that for her.

Lex took a moment to give Ryan's workmanship with the claws an appreciative nod, thinking how terrible he'd be at a weapon like that - he was far too tall to be running around and getting low and all that stuff.

This moment was more than likely why he hand't managed to see the bug monster's claws coming in, and why he was no being put in a death grip next to Ami.

"I'd just like to say, this would be an awful way to go out. I never even made dinner for you." A half smile was all he gave before whipping pistol whipping the creature on the claw.

Note: Wood is not very effective against exoskeletons.

This time, Wilson really did facepalm. It was rather clumsy since he now had canons for arms, but somehow he managed it without hurting himself in the process. “If you insist,” he muttered at Madeline just before the mantis swiped up Ami and Lex. To the rest of the group, Wilson appeared to be blankly staring at the monster.

But really he was still pretty exasperated and really?! Really?!

“Observing. Right.” He decided to take a moment to scrutinize the mantis. A mantis? That sounded familiar. Where had Wilson met a mantis before?

Hmmmmmm.

The death hunter attempted to give Lex a quizzical look, but the mask made it ineffective. Wilson just shook his head and rushed back in to try and pry the pair of hunters out of the creature’s claws.

Madeline ignored all of the babbling in the background to steady herself a second time, swinging Arsen to and fro with renewed vigor even though it hurt like a b***h to use him. But hey, this was getting way too old way to fast, and no one seemed to be getting along at all (because obviously they weren't all at least ex-highschoolers so much still in ********' kindergarten or somethin') so she tasked herself with doing the only logical thing.

Killing the stupid mantis.

Madeline grinned and swung hard again.

Hey, babe, time for you to go to sleep.

There were simply too many invaders, too many to deal with. But they were invading home, home, and he held out as long as he could until they overwhelmed him. He hissed at the blows.

"Home."

They did not understand, they were attacking his home, threatening it. He could not simply stand idly by. "Home." An insistent hiss, mandibles clacking as he turned toward the one with the braid, almost as if something in him recognized her, though stricken with insanity it was impossible for him to know her as he started for her. "Home."

Another attacked and he dissipated into the fog, hiss echoing in the air.

Horror struck her entire body as the mandibles came forward. Whatever daredevil tendency had led her to bravely shoot the head was gone as it came closer, closer. She could almost feel the countless insects in the prison cell, biting her skin, ripping her apart piece by piece.

Poor Lex would have to deal with screams in his ears.

Madeline must've struck a sweet spot as the mantis dissipated, leaving Ami to slump against Lex's figure. The screams quickly turned to whimpers and she backed away from Lex- backed away from everyone, shaking her head, trying to get them away. Maybe it was the insanity environment, maybe it was just her memories taking over. This was quickly turning into a scenario where she died. She'd seen too many of those.

All Ami could do was stumble onto the ground and stare at everyone with wide eyes, terrified. Which one of them was going to kill her? Madeline said this was real, but her mind was telling her it wasn't. It was just another illusion by Medea. Not real. "Stay away from me! All of you!" she shouted, though she knew it wouldn't do any good. It never did. Not even in the other illusions. The more she shouted, the longer it took, usually.

She had to run. She turned to do just that, but tangled up her legs in the process and tripped onto the ground, a complete failure to escape. "No no no no." She held her head, trying to fight the headache and impending doom that was coming. Reality was mixing with illusion, and Ami was not taking well to it.

He breathed a sigh of relief as the mantis dissipated into the fog once more. But now that the group could rest, questions began to flood his mind. Had it always been here? Where had all of this Insanity come from? Clarice had mentioned students, had that been a student somehow? It certainly seemed familiar. He could have drowned himself in endless questions and hypotheses if Ami’s cry hadn’t startled him. “What?” The panic in her eyes caused him to rip off his mask and let his weapon clatter noisily until it returned to its goggle form. “Ami, what’s wrong?” His forehead was filled with crinkle lines as he stepped toward the blond.

His pace quickened and he bent down to wrap Ami in a hug. “Ami. Stop. Please. Shhhh. Shhhh.” Wilson closed his eyes as he rubbed her back soothingly. “It’s alright, okay? It’s alright.”

Despite the screaming, Lex was completely and totally ready to embrace Ami. He didn't know her very well, and she'd treated him rather badly during both of their encounters, but he was always told to love those who treated him badly. And to love those who treated him well. Lex was told to love.

He loved in many different ways.

But Ami was suddenly gone, and Wilson was on her white on rice. The Life trainee's lip curled, irate and not knowing why. It was the Insanity, he told himself. Stupid white fog with its stupid ability to infiltrate his brain.

Standing up from where he'd been unceremoniously dropped and brushing off his coat, he gave a small throat clearing cough before saying "Alright, we need to do a check of things, I suppose. Anyone with sever injuries?" His voice was shaky, but not panicking.
