Reading the 2000-2009 banned list makes me a little depressed. I've read quite a few of those books, and some of them address a lot of real life issues that young people face but are pressured not to discuss (abuse, self harm, oppression, drug use). Ignoring these things does not make them go away.
My mother bought me Deal With It by Esther Drill when I was around 14. It dealt with everything from periods to safe sex to drugs in a very open and real way. I can honestly say that without that book, I would have been in the dark about so many things I wouldn't dare talk about with my parents. Even my older friends who read it were glad they did.
