Rider's Personality: Fiercely loyal and committed to helping the Weyr and any friends, Nicara can be considered an enabler when it comes to certain individuals, especially her best friend or her girlfriend.. If these relationships have given her a more than slight biased towards those with red hair it's only due to an underlying preference towards them in the first place. Usually seen either working, training or simply playing her violin, if any should have a request of her she reacts instantly and can be quite accommodating with her own free time despite other activities. She is intensely attentive to any needs that others might have and is capable of fulfilling nearly all of them thanks to being competent in many fields and very intelligent, but she can be stubborn once she's begun a task and won't stop until either Diesteth talks her down or the task is complete.

It's the intelligence that keeps her from essentially becoming a lap dog to those that might use her skills for their own gain. She can do many things and accomplish any task but refuses to give all of her time to others; rather, she enjoys her own pursuits that bring her happiness and will not allow anything to impede upon them. Her violin is her greatest pursuit, having been a Journeyman before becoming a dragon rider, and she takes any and all opportunities to play it for her own enjoyment. Playing for the Weyr and dragons has taken getting used to, before Impressing she was used to playing for the other inhabitants of the Harper Hall but no one else.

Her emotionless expressions hide a kind heart and a courageous strength that pours from her when in the sky with Thread. She will stop at nothing to see it burned from the sky and she credits her brave blue, Diesteth, with helping her at each step. To others it might seem that she has no ambitions other than to help, but Nicara has ambition to spare and no fear of speaking her mind when her toes are stepped on. It might take quite a lot more to usher her into anger than her best friend but it is by no means a smart move to anger her. Thanks to her intelligence and ability to accomplish just about anything it can border on dangerous to set off her slow burning anger.

With very few exceptions the lazy and dishonest do not do well around her, her ire is not to be trifled with lightly in these regards. Nicara will swiftly deal with their habits if necessary or completely ignore them if not. She holds herself to very high self standards despite her low rank among other dragonriders and if her integrity is called into account she will simply lay the facts of whatever the matter is before those questioning her.

Rider's History: Weyrbrat from the moment she was born, or at least as far back as she can remember, Nicara ran around the ankles of dragons and riders as if it were a usual thing for everyone on Pern. She never truly knew her parents, riders that had no time for children but still managed to have her. The Crechemaster assigned her to a foster when she was just a baby and the foster parents had time to instill in her a feeling of love and trust before she began to apprentice at the Harper Hall in the violin. The time she grew up in the Weyr was a vibrant rainbow of dragons that left a mark on her which has shown its way through the music she produces.

One of the defining moments of her childhood happened when a young red head blew into the Weyr on the back of a blue dragon and settled into her life like an anchor. Though she had no use for friends up until that point, she found herself drawn to helping the older girl adapt to life in the Weyr and standing up for her old habits. She noticed very quickly that her new friend was used to a harder life that required a certain type of behavior that was now unnecessary in her new incarnation. Nicara took instant responsibility for her, an unusual occurrence in her normally no-nonsense personality and her foster parents were unable to comprehend her desire to be of aid to a thief.

Her skills with a violin had already begun to blossom and her association with Onasta prompted her foster parents to press her into apprenticeship with the Harper Hall to remove her from what they viewed as a destructive relationship. She was whisked away on the back of her own birth mother’s dragon to the hall where she would spend her next few years in study, away from her friends and away from nearly all the dragons that had inspired her.

Despite being removed from her birthplace as if she were a criminal herself, Nicara hit her rhythm in Fort Hold and came to be an invaluable pupil to her master. It was during her time in the Hall that she went from being a jack-of-all-trades to a hyper-competent and intelligent asset to whomever needed her. Always wishing to be of use to her master in any way possible morphed her into a quiet and nearly mechanical person that simply lived to serve in the best way she knew how. Though she had been quiet before it grew to a new level during her training, her violin became her only form of expression and her songs became more somber as time wore on. It seemed that time passed differently in the hold than it did the Weyr and things were frowned upon there that would otherwise have passed for acceptable in her beloved home.

Applying herself harder in the interest of escaping the atmosphere that had become Fort Hold, Nicara walked the tables to Journeyman at the age of seventeen and immediately left to return to Western Weyr, claiming that she needed inspiration to continue playing and nothing inspired more than dragons. Her return sparked interest in those that had all but forgotten about the quiet shadow that had stood so close to the now seasoned dragon rider, Onasta. Her friend was beyond thrilled to have her back and spoke to the candidatemaster on her behalf immediately, almost completely against her will. For though she had returned to see dragons, her friends and family, Onasta, and the Weyr in general Nicara was not entirely sold on the idea of her having what it took to impress a dragon.

To make everyone happy she agreed to enter as a candidate for the next Impression, but had no intention of doing anything other than watching from the sidelines. Nicara had seen impressions before, but none while standing on the sands swathed in white and was curious to see the reactions that might be had. While she still practiced playing her violin, much to the enjoyment of anyone that happened by, the teenager attended classes with the other candidates and twice deftly avoided standing at Impressions. She was nineteen when Onasta and Jibasth stepped in to ensure she could not skirt her next opportunity and she was ushered rather unceremoniously onto the sands by the candidatemaster when she was taken before to him by the highly amused brown.

Her time on the sands was brief and bloody, scarred on the hip by a small green looking for its mate and her shoulder torn open when a slightly larger blue attacked her and succeeded in pinning her to the ground, she began to panic and look for a way off. It was the keening noise coming from the blue that made her look back, her pain washed away by a feeling of finally being whole for the first time in her life. Tears streamed down her face, a mix of pain and happiness as her newly befriended Diesteth whimpered out apologies and tried licking away her tears.

Although their introduction was colored by blood and pain, Diesteth and Nicara became as inseparable as any rider and dragon pair in the Weyr. They learned together, studied together and practiced together for their eventual flights. Although Nicara was placed in a different wing than Onasta she still acted as a shadow for her, though now she stood out in her own way on the back of her icy blue dragon. Nothing could have made her happier.

Over the turns she and Diesteth began to work as a Searchrider pair, pulling in many candidates that have impressed over turns both at Western and at High Reaches(Thanks to the swap). Despite her dragon's and her own slight affinity towards redheads, something both will deny, they've brought in a variety of candidates on the Search and they have a brimming pride thanks to the experience. On one particularly volatile Search the pair met a fiery redhead named Roana that at first appeared disinterested in coming and then agree in a rush after a disagreement with a family member. Though the entire experience left Nicara ruffled and annoyed, the former pirate turned candidate wormed her way right into her heart and stayed there in secrete for quite some time. While it seemed that the two might never manage to overcome the hurdle of Nicara's withdrawn and reserved nature, alcohol did the trick and took her over the edge that led her to fall straight into Roana's arms. Diesteth's joy at their finally figuring out their attraction had him sniggering at her for months afterwards but it ended soon enough.

On a cool fall day up at High Reaches, Nicara was forced to say goodbye to Roana when she found her lifemate in a different Weyr the same day a Western bronze tore a rift between the two Weyrs with his insults thrown at a queen. Her focus has been razor sharp ever since, wanting to prove that Western is truly one of the best Weyrs on Pern. While she fully understands the repercussions of actions and the length of time she'll have to wait to see her most loved girlfriend again, she and her great blue have responsibilities and distractions from feelings and emotions can get one killed. It has tempered their shared desire.

Where did your rider Impress from? Western

How long have they been stationed at High Reaches or Western Weyr? 8 turns, since impression! They're going no where.

How do they feel about Thread's return? Equal parts furious and determined, Nicara has a deep hatred for it that goes beyond just being afraid of it's return, family and friends fell to it, wingmates and those she didn't even know but who had vibrant lives that deserved to keep living were gouged out of life. She wants it burned from the skies and keeps very detailed notes about when and where it falls in her free time.

How do they feel about their current Weyr? Nicara loves Western and her wing and everyone that lives there and supports it. It is her heart and the one true home that she has where she grew up in the shadows of dragons with music in her veins. Turns later when she returned she met her other set of hearts on their sands that taught her exactly all the reasons that she shouldn't have left. She believes wholeheartedly in the leadership and the council and while Diesteth doesn't follow blindly, they work very hard for their Weyr and everyone within it.

Why do they want to be a Wingsecond, ICly? Nicara wants to help Western in any way that she can, in any capacity that she can. While she's been positioned as a wingrider for some time she wants to help her wingmates be the best, to support and aid them in the interest of fighting the vile Thread that falls and risks not only themselves but all their loved ones as well. Nicara and Diesteth both believe greatly in teamwork and want to see every wingrider flying and fighting the best that they can with what they've been trained in and if she can aid them then all the better!

Describe their leadership style in less than 60 characters. Lead by example, fight all together for the future of Pern.

Why do you (OOCly) think they'd be a good fit? While Nicara loves music she's more of a machine at heart. Everything in her is controlled and she follows patterns and threadfall like it was her own sort of religion(Not actual religion XD You know what I mean!) and it makes her a fierce rider. With both herself and Diesteth fighting together they're hyper-competent and respond quickly in situations, which is a direct effect of all the training they've focused closely and diligently on. They would bring a great focus to a wing as a second pair and a very strong direction.

How would they react if they were given command of the Wing during a rough Threadfall? Clear heads prevail, while they might not be able to fly both halves of the threadfall that's where teamwork comes in. They might be commanding the Wing and giving orders, but they aren't the only ones up there and expect that the training they've been working with their wing will come through in that moment but expect for the worst. Nicara is highly attentive to manuvers and her eyes already follow all her fellow wingriders as much as thread, she's highly attentive and operates well under pressure with Diesteth's cool and level head always keeping them both grounded.

How would they react if they were asked to deal with a wingrider who is causing division among the wingriders and who already seems to loathe you and refuses to follow your commands? You might work with her and fly with her, but you don't have to like her. All you have to do is your job, can't manage that? Well she's not the highest rung on the ladder and you'll find out quickly that she won't tolerate anyone that creates chaos within her wing. Being in a wing means that you fight thread, your wingmates lives could rely on you and yours on them and creating any sort of tension or division is not only unacceptable but dangerous. If neither Nicara or Diesteth can get that through to one of their wingriders, and you better believe that they'll try everything they can first from talking one on one to actual punishment, then they won't let a wingrider risk the safety of their whole wing because they don't like her and will seek a higher power for the safety of all involved.

Do you have any plans or ideas on what you'd do with one of the Wings if you are tapped to support one? Nicara is a stickler for patterns and schedules, she wants to impart that on others with maneuvers and focusing on formations so that there's a consistent understanding and no holes; and it's not that she believes they don't know, but with all things come knowledge and experience and everyone has their own experience. With her it would be wing drills and pushing for great attention to details so that there are no injuries which would really break her heart. She wants to work together with her wingleader to make sure that they have as few injuries or fatalities as possible so she'd be working closely with them as much as she can.

Rider's Personality:
Some might look at Argathi and think ‘aww, what a sweet old lady’- wrong. Ignorant and wrong. Beware, for even the brightest, most colourful spiders still weave their webs and catch their prey, and the Turns have only sharpened Argy’s touch. A brilliant mind lurks beneath sharp eyes, and a wan, pale smile only conceals the harsh judgement formulated at your expense. She does not suffer fools, nor time-wasters.

With an iron will cultivated over Turns of hard-work, dedication and a desire to advance in life, Argathi is very rarely dissuaded from her chosen course. Certainly, she is not an unreasonable woman, but she trusts very few to have her best intentions at heart, and will consider their opinions with a great deal of thought. All this to say that she knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to chase it- ambitious, perhaps, but not without skill and practice.

When it comes to her Weyr and home, Argathi is a bit of a stickler and traditionalist. She very strongly believe High Reaches’ survival is due to its endearing adherence to tradition, and has a healthy respect for its leaders. Though at first she may seem self-serving through choosing to focus on her career goals at the expense of personal relationships and sometimes even the welfare of herself and those close to her, she would gladly lay down her life to advance the prosperity and cause of High Reaches itself. She is dedicated and loyal when called upon, fully cognisant of the risks that might be asked of her to undertake.

Responsible, experienced and mature, Argathi is more than capable of keeping her head in times of crises. She has a plan of action, a contingency plan, a backup plan, a worst-case scenario, a fallback plan, and at least several replacements should something go wrong. She is the kind of woman who packs ten pairs of socks for a three day trip, who carries a small medical pack on her at all times, and who knows exactly how many exits are in the room. She will never admit to being caught unaware, and as a woman who puts a great deal of time and effort into preparation and work, is very rarely so. Fastidious and meticulous, she is proud of her accomplishments, of her duty-bound ways and of her hard-working nature. She expects others to act similarly, and will not refrain from showing her disappointment when they fail her.

Her fuse is short. Argathi has a reputation for being bad-tempered, and it is not wholly undeserved. Her manner of speaking is blunt, and her judgement of others can border on harsh. She is extremely critical- of both herself and others- and will spare nobody’s feelings if she thinks they need to hear the truth. When it comes to more empathic matters, Argathi often finds herself preferring to remain aloof and disconnected from the situation: she is not especially well-tuned to her own emotions, let alone the emotions of those around her. It is difficult, but not impossible, to evoke compassion and understanding from her- although she does at times fake it. Truly, it’s just a matter of time and patience, to chisel away at that very icy heart…

In the domain of romance, Argathi is very careful indeed. She once harboured a very long love for someone, but found herself disenchanted and disillusioned when they did not live up to her expectations. Nowadays, she does not spare a second thought for the notion of love- feeling only a sense of duty towards her Weyr-fellows. Flightlust is, of course, dealt with accordingly, and certainly people can be appreciated for the fleeting beauty that they bring to the world… but nothing really lasts, right? Argy is nothing if not a calculating cynic.

Rider's History:
Argathi was the result of Flightlove. Bluerider Margas of Sansaikith, and Greenrider H’athi of Flinnaeth, were occasional partners brought together by their dragons’ fondness for each other. The baby was left with the creche nannies after given a name; Argathi saw little of her parents, who were more preoccupied with their lives as dragonriders even in a time of relative peace.

The baby never lacked for love, but it was easy to see that she was old before her time. Argathi didn’t have fun in the same way that other children did- she liked things that made sense: logic and lessons, rules and discipline. The world was better when there was order in it. She didn’t necessarily take to positions of authority, being quieter and more reserved than other weyrbrats, but she understood more than she let on, and proved her cunning as she grew by scheming against those who personally bothered her.

At twelve, she apprenticed to the healers, but had no desire to leave the Weyr. Her interest in dragons was a thing of her blood- never afraid of heights or the sheer, awesome power of these great and noble creatures, Argathi knew she wanted to help them as best as she could. She was especially fond of Sansaikith and Flinnaeth, who seemed to, over the Turns, show more interest in her than her own biological parents. The young girl wasn’t so bothered by this fact; but here was the true starting point of her dragon fixation.

She began to Stand as soon as she turned fourteen, fulfilling her healing duties in the interim. The Journeymen who taught her remarked on her intellect, praising her ability to diagnose even in the midst of a crisis, but criticised her distinct lack of bedmanner and compassion. She was encouraged to specialise in triage and emergency healing, tending to accidents that may have scared the more faint of heart. She discovered she had a rather steely gut and did not flinch in the face of the macabre.

It took four Turns of waiting and patience, but Argathi was rewarded. In 3532, on stifling golden sands, she watched as young dragons once more broke free of their shells. She held her breath as a green or a blue would pass nearby, and stop the resultant disappointment from cracking that thick outer shell she had nurtured. Oh… Argathi… Are you ready to be born anew? Your Genkuroth has many thoughts on how this world should work. Hunger dominated her mind, a fierce explosion that was quickly brushed away by immovable, immutable love. The dark brown dragon crossed the sands at a languorous pace, a piece of eggshell still clinging to his headknob. Argathi breathed a sigh of relief, a small smile breaking her cold mask. “Genkuroth… Took you long enough to get here.” She raised a slightly shaking hand and brushed his snout, pausing to scratch sensitive eyeridges before gentle fingers found their way up his headknobs, hesitantly removing the piece of shell. “But all is well. We’ll do what we can, won’t we?” With grace and good humour- no doubt his, seeping into her- she led him to the feeding tables.

In training, they were amongst the top of their class. Argathi was a paragon of discipline and studiousness. Genkuroth, on the other hand… he had a penchant for mischief that Argy had not quite fully understood. Though he was often a solitary creature, preferring his, or their, company, he liked to play jokes on his siblings. Before long, it became a contest of wills between the two: Argathi’s steely resolve versus Gen’s wiley inner fire. It is a contest that is still fought to this day, traded in little quips or barbs, in huffs or taps, in an affectionate headboop or caress. Neither one yields- and neither expects it. Their love is so profound that any dichotomy between them melts away in its presence.

Still, they graduated without too many problems, Argathi proving herself more than capable of handling her dragon’s more underhanded schemes. She was tapped for a wing, and set herself to drills. Life was a routine that Argathi loved, even as Genkuroth strived to saddle the boundary between good and naughty.

During her early adulthood, she fell in love with a fellow rider. The relationship consumed Turns of her focus, and resulted in a long-lasting bitterness that Argathi hides to this day. She became more taciturn and reclusive as she aged, developing a cool haughtiness in her fifties more appropriate of a highborn socialite than a brownrider, but advantageous in protecting herself. Hurt, yes, and she wrestled with anger and disappointment for a while. Genkuroth- caring and loving beneath a veneer of playful, subtle trickery, comforted her. He had always been there. And they had always had plans together, remember? They had a whole Weyr to bend to their will.

And then Thread returned.

The world was thrown into chaos. Families torn asunder. Homes- whole Holds- lay in ruins. Parts of Pern that had flourished were now husks, shells of their former glory. High Reaches reeled and collected, rallying around a dragonrider’s obligation and duty to their world. And as they rose to fight, they, too, suffered losses amongst their numbers.

Margas and Sansaikith never returned that day.

The woman and her brown mourned- for as she had become a rider and joined the Wings, her relationship with her parents had grown somewhat warmer. If it had never been filled with filial love, than at least it was filled with the affection and respect awarded to one’s closest comrades. There was no time to sit back and reflect, nor did Argathi want to unpack that pain; there was a duty to be done. A threat to vanquish.

And so now Argathi assumes a stoic position, continuing to fight and fly in a cold and dispassionate manner. Chances are, they will die. She knows this. Genkuroth knows this. The Weyr knows they must fight if they are to survive. There is no other choice.

Where did your rider Impress from? High Reaches Weyr

How long have they been stationed at High Reaches or Western Weyr?
Argathi has lived at High Reaches her whole life, and been a rider for 43 Turns.

How do they feel about Thread's return?
Thread is not a good thing, but they are not dragonriders for nothing! Time to put on your flight leathers, mount up, and fight back! Argathi expects death to claim them all eventually- but she sure as shards won’t go down without a fight.

How do they feel about their current Weyr?
Rabble-rousers and dissenters beware! High Reaches will not stand for it, and neither will Argathi.

Why do they want to be a Wingsecond, ICly?
Argathi is waiting for her time to shine and help guide her wingmates: this is the perfect opportunity.

Describe their leadership style in less than 60 characters.
“I've seen weyrlings with more dragonsense than you.” Eyebrow flex.

Why do you (OOCly) think they'd be a good fit?
An ambitious woman who is a stalwart believer in High Reaches ideals, Argathi provides age and experience to the pool of younger folk around her. She is not afraid to tell people to shape up, and holds her wingmates to the same high expectations that she herself follows.

How would they react if they were given command of the Wing during a rough Threadfall?
If given command, Argy and Genkuroth would make a quick analysis of the issues encountered during the Fall- what is causing so many injuries, why has the Wingleader retired- and will then relay an improved set of orders to the rest of the Wing. It’s one thing to cover for her leader- but she refuses to blindly lead her wingmates to their deaths.

She is a level-headed, unflappable woman, more cold than kind: rough Threadfall is nothing new or devastating, only another thing to be dealt with before the day is done.

How would they react if they were asked to deal with a wingrider who is causing division among the wingriders and who already seems to loathe you and refuses to follow your commands?
Swiftly. A cold, hardened approach is to Argy’s advantage- often people are disarmed by the conflicting sweet appearance and the severity of her words. So what if people don’t like her? Damn them to Between; if you don’t want to receive a warning or face some kind of punishment, then you’d better shape up and start listening.

Do you have any plans or ideas on what you'd do with one of the Wings if you are tapped to support one? Social bonding threads- brunch with Grumpy Grandma, anyone? ICly, Argy would want to have a good grasp of everybody’s political stance and morale within the wing, and will indulge in celebratory feasting if that’s how it has to be done. Otherwise, drills! OOCly, a combination of group threads and singular/PRP threads would probably be how I would manage that. Mostly- I think following the directive of the Wingleader character/player would make a great deal of sense: Argathi won’t step out of the boundaries of her given power unless she is instructed to do so.

~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality:
Down-to-earth and sensible, Qiana is a font of positivity and goodness. She has strong nurturing instincts, coupled with a desire to see folks flourish. Gifted with a great sense of community spirit, she revels in the success of others, and enjoys a good celebration of the Weyr’s achievements. This can have its drawbacks, too, for she is firm in her adherence to the Council’s vision of how Western should be represented and run, and hard on those who do not measure up to her- or their- expectations. Expect Qiana’s mother-like disappointment and her need to set people straight to manifest at some point- especially for those nearest and dearest.

On the surface, she is a sociable, jovial woman who enjoys good conversation, light banter, and playful flirting. Though she has a temper, it is less rage and more ire and snippiness. She is the type to hold a long grudge unless the recalcitrant party makes it up to her in earnest. She likes her jokes spoken, not enacted. Qiana has a good understanding of people, and a great deal of compassion and empathy for those who are a more permanent fixture in her life. She’ll never think badly of anyone- not unless she has been given a reason to do so.

With strong ties to her Weyr-family and a natural-born ability to be a social butterfly and fit in, Qiana is devoted to most folk as long as she trusts and respects them. Very little sways her opinion: she’s quite set in her ways, despite her youthful energy. However, she has a tendency to be a little too intrusive, sometimes even overbearing. This stems from her slightly skewed perception of others: they they need her protection, and the best way she can serve them is by ‘guiding’ them, and ensuring they’re on the right path.

Qiana shows cleverness through her ability to adapt and her varied skill set. She has a green thumb and a good knowledge of plants; she knows how to run a domestic home, from darning to cooking to medical assistance; and possesses strong survival instincts, with a grounding in hunting and beast-tending. There is little that she couldn’t put her mind to and achieve, and Qiana is the kind of woman to do just so. She strives for self-improvement and wants to be the best that she can be, for both herself and her Weyr. She expects the same drive from others.

Beneath the surface, she is a woman who loves her creature comforts and a warm, cosy hearth. Qiana has a nostalgic love for her old life, and dreams of a day when she can retire to a lovely little residence of her own, surrounded by her loved ones. Deep down, this young woman has a bit of a materialistic streak that makes her very house-proud. She likes decorating and furnishing her own quarters with goods her hard-earned marks can acquire, and enjoys fancy clothing as well. Fine wine is a must for any event, and she enjoys the luxuries afforded to her by her hard work and rank. Sure, there are those who might disapprove… but shaffit, every day is a day to die- might as well enjoy the ones you get to live for.

Rider's History:
Born in Keroon Hold to farmer parents, Qiana’s life was mapped out for her at a very young age: become a farmer, marry well, raise a family. Follow in her parents’ footsteps, yadda yadda, the whole shebang.

And she was perfectly content with it. Circumstances were good. Keroon was flourishing. The runners it produced were renowned all over Pern. Its fields were bountiful. Life was idyllic for young Qiana, who fit in well with her peers and friends- including a fosterling by the name of Dhawsn, who seemed as easy-going and as pleasant as she was.

Although the official Farmcraft Hall was at Nerat, Qiana stayed on at Keroon and learnt farming from her parents. She had a way with plants that brought them great pride and pleasure: a true girl after their own hearts. She also tended to the herds in nearby grazing pastures, and enjoyed the friendship of folks learned in the Beastcraft. She was disappointed when Dhawsn was sent to the Smithhall at Telgar, but she was also glad that he’d found his thing.

A thing found her, too. Well- not so much a thing as a Searchrider. She was seventeen when she accepted to go to the Weyr, much to the disappointment of her parents. Though initially Searched for Igen, she volunteered to go to Western when they were in need of candidates. At age twenty, her luck on the sands changed.

A small white dragonet sought her out without hesitation, eyes whirling rainbows. Now, see- this is why I like you! You’ve just got the biggest smile. And look at those dimples. Yes. You’re perfect, Qiana. Now, please feed your Amairrith, before she wastes away. The drawling, self-pitying whine wrapped around her mind, kindling a surge of love that would never ever be matched. Qiana was overjoyed: she had finally found her soulmate: her pesky, sassy, adorable, eccentric dragon-half.

And so began their wonderful partnership: Amairrith was both sweet and sour, a precocious, precious firecracker dragon who tolerated no one’s runner-poo. With Qiana’s easy-going, gentle nature to guide her, she found a sort of balance to her volatility that helped make her an asset to the Wings. Qiana herself thrived in training- the daily routine appealed to her Holdgirl senses. She fell more and more in love with Amai each passing day. Her dragon’s passion only enhanced her own love for life- and the two grew both more tempestuous and mature as their bond solidified.

Thread began to fall when she was in her twenty-sixth Turn. It decimated many Holds, including Keroon, and Qiana received news that her parents had perished in that first, unexpected Fall. Though their relationship had grown frosty since she had accepted Search- and Impressed- she still grieved their passing a great deal, filled with regrets that their parting had not been on better terms, and that she hadn’t tried harder to mend the bond between them.

Amairrith carried her through her sorrow, determined to bring her rider back to life. She encouraged her rider to be mindful of their space, to create a sanctuary within their weyr that catered to their sophisticated tastes. At first, Qiana did so just to placate and please her dragon; but she soon found herself enjoying the plush luxury that came of saving marks and buying new bedfurs, or commissioning a new dress or a small tapestry of her dragon. It was the sort of innocent folly that served both as distraction and passion, and Qiana found herself craving more things in her life.

Nowadays, life consists of duties and Threadfighting. Qiana is happy- as happy as she can be, really. She has Amairrith, a flower garden, her precious things, and a noble purpose in life- that’s all a person needs, right? Of course. She dares not let herself think about the possibility of having children of her own, as secretly as she might desire them. Qiana fears that it would be an inconvenience to a whole lot of people… besides which, it is not an easy thing to accomplish when riding a fighting dragon, either… Nevertheless, life is good. Qiana doesn’t complain.

With the recent delivery of Consequences, life has gotten a little more… awkward. Qiana is embarrassed Western fell into disfavour- any ally is good, especially in Threadfall. Amairrith, on the other hand, is regretful that other Queens have scorned Western so- and is also infuriated that some dragons are just so rude. Oh, it would be so much easier if everybody could just get along...

Where did your rider Impress from? Western Weyr

How long have they been stationed at High Reaches or Western Weyr?
About ten Turns, from candidacy to dragonrider.

How do they feel about Thread's return?
Thread is Not a Good Thing, but it’s nothing dragonriders haven’t and can’t face again! Qiana has a nonchalant defiance about Thread as a whole- they have to fight it. It’s the only way to save Pern.

How do they feel about their current Weyr?
Both Qiana and Amairrith are very loyal to their Weyr, espousing its colour-equality policies and enjoying all that the Weyr and its location have to offer.

Why do they want to be a Wingsecond, ICly?
They are approachable, driven, dedicated and loyal to their Weyr-family. Qiana is steadfast and resolved, as happy to provide discipline to those in need as to bolster morale with a kind heart and approach. Amairrith likes to feel important- so this is more of a self-serving, ‘look-at-me-I’m just as important-as-others’ moment for her.

Describe their leadership style in less than 60 characters.
“Wingriders, rally! We must not lose! Time to give 110%.”

Why do you (OOCly) think they'd be a good fit?
Qiana would give body and soul for the folks she cares for, and she has a lot of love and care to give. She’d flourish both following a leader and inspiring others to do likewise. As for Amairrith- I think it’d be really funny for her dreams of power-mongering to culminate here.

How would they react if they were given command of the Wing during a rough Threadfall?
Qiana keeps a steady head: Thread is the number one priority. She’ll rally the strength of those remaining, including Amairrith, who may be more inclined to panic. She has had Turns to discipline herself to keep a cool head in crises; her empathy sees her reaching for unconventional strategies to preserve the life of her wingmates within the realms of possibility.

How would they react if they were asked to deal with a wingrider who is causing division among the wingriders and who already seems to loathe you and refuses to follow your commands?
Qiana would track them down and draw them into conversation. For her, it would be about determining the cause of their frustration, and resolving the issue. If there is no readily obvious solution, and nothing that can be mediated through diplomacy, OR if the reason is more ridiculous than even her gregarious tolerance levels would allow, she will deliver punishment agreed upon with her wingleader. There is wiggle room, and problems can be resolved with clear communication- but there comes a time when one must recognise that another person is just wasting precious time and breath. Qiana’s patience is finite.

Do you have any plans or ideas on what you'd do with one of the Wings if you are tapped to support one? ICly, Qiana would place an emphasis on getting to know her wingmates, and forging bonds with said wingmates. If this involves planning extravagant parties with good food and drink, all the better. OOCly, I’d like to host a few ‘mini-gather’ type threads or drill-games for the Wing, but everything would be done within the boundaries set by the Wingleader’s player’s, with a conscious effort not to overstep ICly/OOCly.

Rider's Name: D’mos
Rider's Age: 35
Dragon's Name: Phaeth
Dragon's Age: 17
Dragon Color: Bronze
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? High Reaches Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved
Will you need a colorist to create art for this character? No
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality:
D’mos is anything but humble, he is particularly vain in outward appearance in being particular careful in the way that he looks and lives and thrives on the idea of giving the impression of being perfect. That and topped with a healthy does of arrogance also doesn’t stop him from correct others, or putting his own advice regardless if it is asked or wanted by others or losing his temper when someone disagrees. It doesn’t help coming from a traditionalist family whose son’s tended to be bronze riders as a status while looking down on any other color that of gold. Not that D’mos is nearly as bad as his father or brother, there is an understanding in his mind that everyone is needed for a weyr to run smoothly just that there is a hierarchy to follow of course.

Growing up under his father’s fame, and thing his brother’s fame as well D’mos has spent a great deal of his time studying riders, studying moves, making sure things are perfect, or at least how to perfect it and he doesn’t have an issue telling someone else how to do it correctly. He is hardworking, constantly pushing himself to be better, to improve even more, and with that finding out on his own how things should be instead of simply taking someone at their word. He tends to handle matters on his own not wanting to put something off on another rider especially when it was asked or given to him to complete and has the habit of going above and beyond what is necessary in a need to make an impression on others.

Rider's History: D’mos was born to a traditionalist bronze-rider of a father, and much like his father, and fathers before him grew up at a young age learning everything there was in becoming a worthy rider. Despite having a few other siblings in the weyr D’mos spent most of his time with his older brother who much like him strives for perfection. Even though he is close to him, he views him as a rival and someone he needs to surpass at some point his in life in which only makes him strive harder to be great. As for D’mos’s mother she was a young courtesan whom his father had fancied for a few years, it wasn’t particularly something the family approved of considering her status in the weyr however it did not stop his father from taking the two sons in after her death. The only memory of D’mos has of his mother was a smiling woman and a lot of colorful clothing that she seemed to love showing off at any chance she had. He does have one half sister who has impressed a brown in one of the lastest hatchings.

Where did your rider Impress from? High Reaches

How long have they been stationed at High Reaches or Western Weyr? For all their life, D’mos has never lived anywhere else.

How do they feel about Thread's return? That with training and being prepared that they can face it again as others have in the past, while he doesn’t particularly like the thread or its destruction he does see this somewhat as a chance to prove themselves in history.

How do they feel about their current Weyr? D’mos lives and breathes for High Reaches, he may not agree with all of its politics however he does know when to keep his mouth shut and not to cause issues over it.

Why do they want to be a Wingleader, ICly?

Describe their leadership style in less than 60 characters. Keeping everything running like a well oiled perfect machine.

How would they react if one of their riders died after making a bad call during Threadfall? He would immediately take the blame, it his job to oversee all of the rider’s in his wing are not only capable of handling themselves against the thread through training but over his care while fighting the thread. If he made a bad call and someone got injured or died it was due to his own fault and carelessness and he would throw himself head first into preventing it from happening again.

How would they react if one of their wingriders starts to get mouthy and doesn't respect your leadership? He would punish them in a fair manner as not to treat anyone who would be mouthy or do something disrespectful in front of others or the wing. He would as well try to figure out a solution of how to handle them and earn some sort of agreement or respect or the reason for their disruption. To him keeping a wing running smoothly is important and if something is wrong, or something is a at the root of the problem he will do his best to solve it.

Why do you (OOCly) think they'd be a good fit? D’mos is a prefections, he likes to strives to gain the highest honor but as well he takes on all the responsibility of a leader. If his wing fails then he fails, and he wants to make sure that they don’t in any way possible, to him the wing is an extension of himself and he wants them to maintain a good reputation. He does tend to come across a bit strict but a lot of it is all for good reason.

Do you have any plans or ideas on what you'd do with one of the Wings if given one? Besides doing whatever he can to aid them in threadfall, he would likely run drills (in-thread-games) every two months (I don’t want to burn out people making it every month).

Rider's Name: S'ian
Rider's Age: 39
Dragon's Name: Bajeth
Dragon's Age: 23
Dragon Color: Bronze (can change to brown if need be!)
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? High Reaches Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Made specifically for the contest
Will you need a colorist to create art for this character? Y
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality: S'ian is currently a depressed, worn-down guy who has hit an awful patch of bad luck. Sarcastic yet sporting a forced devil-may-care attitude with most things, S'ian takes each day as it comes without looking too far forward into the future. He lives in the present as the past is painful and the future is uncertain, indulging in things that bring him momentary happiness but ultimately leave him feeling just as empty as before. A few Turns ago those who know him would have described him as energetic, confident, and intelligent, but all those good qualities have been buried under the dull ache that sits between his ribs. Occasionally a bit of the old S'ian will shine through, but it'll take a lot of work to get him back to his true old self.

Although he's currently trying to better himself, S'ian's current favorite place to be is his bed. Nothing's hard when you're on the verge of sleep that will never come. It's just exhausting and he has lots of time to think about what he's lost. Bajeth tries his best to keep them from going down the dark, swirling hole of the past, but he often gets swept up in it too. Despite it all, S'ian's sense of duty drags him out of bed every day to train and fight Thread with all the strength and energy he can muster.

Rider's History: S'ian was born and raised in High Reaches Weyr, his father a brown dragon rider, his mother a healer. Both died when he was young - his mother, ironically, from illness and his father from a training accident - and he was brought up with the rest of the kids in his age group by those working the Creche before joining the ranks of the Candidates. He was a quick study and loved every bit of the work, from studies to washing the latrines. At 16 Turns he was found by His, a chunky bronze dragon named Bajeth who rolled out of his egg right to S'ian's feet and promptly chomped on his leg before declaring him tasty and mine. Together they trained and grew in skill and size, Bajeth's love of food making him incredibly broad as well as long. When they joined a wing S'ian found a fast friend in one of the other riders who was a few years his senior but whom he remembered fondly from growing up with her around. S'ian had always harbored a bit of a flame for Gyani and he took every opportunity he could to spend time with her.

A few Turns later found S'ian and Gyani a couple, happily married and enjoying life. Gyani and Marceth, her beloved green dragon, were the perfect pair for S'ian and Bajeth both, a foil to S'ain's sarcastic teasing and Bajeth's jolly, overbearing nature. They trained side by side together for what seemed like ages before the return of Thread, and that was when everything changed.

Gyani and Marceth didn't survive Threadfall. They jumped between after taking a particularly bad scoring and never came back. S'ian and Bajeth hadn't even noticed right away, not until Bajeth let out a startled keen when he reached out to his companion and felt nothing at all. From that day on a darkness settled over both dragon and rider, sadness and pain swirling between them in an unending cycle for what felt like eons. With every Threadfall they returned to their duty, fighting hard but without passion. When S'ian wasn't working with Bajeth or the wing, he was in his cave, keeping away from anyone who tried to reach out to him. It wasn't until his Wingleader confronted him and told him to step up or step out that S'ian started making an effort to try harder once more. Gyani and Marceth wouldn't have wanted the two of them to waste away. They would have wanted them to fight, to protect the Weyr and Pern in general, to be the best they could be.

S'ian is still on the road to being the best he knows he can be, but it's hard. He misses Gyani dearly and Bajeth still mourns quietly for Marceth. S'ian needs something to put his mind to, a purpose in life, and perhaps that chance has finally reared its head.

Where did your rider Impress from? High Reaches

How long have they been stationed at High Reaches or Western Weyr? 23 years

How do they feel about Thread's return? Devastated as it brought about the death of their mates. Now they are fighting in their memory to protect Pern from a similar fate.

How do they feel about their current Weyr? It's home. They've never left the Weyr for any extended period of time, and although it's strict, they wouldn't have it any other way.

Why do they want to be a Wingsecond, ICly? They are looking for a greater purpose in life, a reason to keep trying, a way to better themselves and others. A distraction from the pain still within them is also greatly needed and even as Wingsecond, most of their time would be spent being busy with one thing or another.

Describe their leadership style in less than 60 characters. You learn best under intense, life threatening pressure.

Why do you (OOCly) think they'd be a good fit? S'ian is in a bad place now, but he's working his way out of it tooth and claw. Giving him the responsibility of others will make him focus and help bring him out of his depression. Underneath the sadness and pain he is responsible and has high standards for himself that he would hold others to as well.

How would they react if they were given command of the Wing during a rough Threadfall? They would be fine with the responsibility, if a bit nervous. You better believe you wouldn't see S'ian's hands shaking, though. He's the type to pack all his emotions away when need be and focus, only to let them out later when it's appropriate.

How would they react if they were asked to deal with a wingrider who is causing division among the wingriders and who already seems to loathe you and refuses to follow your commands? Give it to them straight with a bit of sarcasm on the side. S'ian hates when things get too serious, but if someone is causing dissent among the ranks he's not going to stand for it. It's your funeral, bub.

Do you have any plans or ideas on what you'd do with one of the Wings if you are tapped to support one? All the drills! Seriously I love drills ;; Wing-specific ORPs to generate team bonding, silly things, drama things. emotional things...I don't have any concrete ideas, just fluffs floating around in there that'll form up eventually. S'ian would probably try to have a Pern version of movie night or some sort of silly team-building games that everyone hates but participates in anyway because misery loves company.

Rider's Name: N'ori

Which Weyr are they Stationed at? High Reaches Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved PC!

~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality: There’s a line where charming crosses over into charismatic and N’ori has done a running leap over it. He is a man to be relied on in the worst of times, and is always there to bolster and lift up those around him. There are no such things as limits, and by Faranth he is going to be making sure those around him don’t feel they have any. The sky isn’t the limit, it’s the starting line!

However, not all limits are meant to be pushed past. While he will never strain another to the point of injury, he will absolutely push himself to the point of injury and often times, even past it. He has been seen by healers perhaps a bit too much for this tendency to push. Even when he should be resting and recovering, N'ori will strain himself and end up needing more recovering time than he should have needed originally.

Everybody's business is N'ori's business - at least, if it is not happening behind closed doors. If something is happening out in public, there is little to no doubt that N'ori will want to be in on what is going on. Even if it's none of his business. He also has a way of trying to get into the middle of ongoing fights to de-escalate things with his optimistic energy and ending up getting socked for it.

Not that he ever holds it against them.

At least, not if it's over a misunderstanding between individuals. People who escalate their own fights and drag unrelated individuals into them will find themselves the target of N'ori's scorn. Even when everything has settled, as far as he should know it, and forgiving pleasantries have been exchanged, he will hold onto doubts about an individual for far longer than most people would and should anything crop up around that, he will hold assumption that a previous offender may just be at fault for the situation. Unless it's his boys. He tends to overlook their faults, much to his own hypocrisy and other's frustrations.

He also will assume that someone who looks like they need protection absolutely does. If someone wants to wrap N'ori around their finger, the easiest way to do so if to become a victim in need of help. However, this isn't the only appeal one can make to N'ori's good heart to get favors or really most anything someone could desire from him.

Those who get to know N’ori on a personal level, however, will find that underneath the charisma and heroic attitude...is a bit of a dunce. It isn’t that N’ori is dumb persay, but rather that when he actually has to think about something, he struggles a bit with it. Has to talk with someone in authority? You bet he has a paper with notes on it. In fact, when it comes to more on-the-up-and-up happenings, and even certain observations, his kids may pick them up before even he does.

Rider's History: Naogiori was practically born into the streets of Nabol. A quiet, and unassuming child, he lived as any streetchild did. When he was 7, he happened to befriend a young woman who worked in one of the brothels high above. Her name was Nahna. Nahna had some constant companionship in Dragonriders, and she told stories of them to the boy. He, in turn, would retell the stories to others in the gutters. Perhaps to try and inspire some hope in them - though not many saw the stories this way.

He lived for her stories, even if the mine should have claimed his young life. As he got older, the other courtesans of the brothel attempted to make Nahna turn the boy away and on some nights she did because she was working. On others, she would treat him as a mother would a child - and she expressed many times that she’d wished she had one of her own. She talked about if she ever had one, she’d have to secret them off to a better life - perhaps in the arms of a Dragonrider.

When he was 15, Nahna would do just that for Naogiori. While not properly searched, the boy was brought back as such - a favor she’d been holding onto, though Nahna herself was too old to use it for herself.

The next clutch on the sands would come soon after. From it, he impressed perhaps not the largest of bronzes - and in fact, he seemed fairly average in build, though long and lean - but the brightest, most confident match that ever could have been.

He’d return to Nabol many times to try and bring Nahna back with him to High Reaches, but each time she refused - with an excuse here or there as to why. At the age of 22, he adopted a boy from the creche. Three turns later, upon his nearly annual visit to try and take her away with him, Nahna instead shoved a child into his arms - one not much older than the one he had at home. “Keep him safe for me,” she insisted, “And don’t ever bring him here.”

There was no mistaking that the boy was hers, though why it had taken her six turns to hand him over would be a question N’ori would never get the answer to. The next visit would be his last. Nahna would not be there - and despite following leads on it, he would not find her.

So he instead put all of his energy into his two sons. Though his first would never readily accept the second.

First Threadfall would not be kind to N’ori or Meigth. The bronze intercepted a particularly nasty hit meant for another, and the dragon ended up grounded for a year while he recovered from it. It is only in the last half a turn that N’ori and Meigth have been approved as wing-ready and have rejoined the skies. Meanwhile, both of his sons have begun the eager wait for dragons so they can join their father.

Where did your rider Impress from? High Reaches

How long have they been stationed at High Reaches or Western Weyr? 22 turns - since impressing Meigth!

How do they feel about Thread's return? Besides being a bit of a 'throw myself into harm's way to protect my Weyr, home, and family', N'ori and Meigth both STRONGLY enjoy rising to what it was they were both meant to do.

How do they feel about their current Weyr? N'ori loves High Reaches and takes pride in being part of the Weyr that was ready when Thread came - even if he and Meigth kind of took a heavy hit to save another the first go around. Whoops.

Why do they want to be a Wingsecond, ICly? N'ori has a bit of an empty nest since both of his sons became Candidates and would rather put the energy he and Meigth have itching at their nerves towards some extra good with this discovered...lonely freetime.

Describe their leadership style in less than 60 characters. Congratulations you're all my kids now. Hold onto your butt.

Why do you (OOCly) think they'd be a good fit? He's going to adopt whatever wing has him, tbh. He has good energy and good attitude.

How would they react if they were given command of the Wing during a rough Threadfall? Immediately collect his brain and make sure to get a firm grasp on everybody else's as well - do not let there be room for confusion and panic in anybody in the wing. Keep them focused.

How would they react if they were asked to deal with a wingrider who is causing division among the wingriders and who already seems to loathe you and refuses to follow your commands? Unfortunately for them, N'ori is already ready to die for them even if they loathe him and he has no issue pushing his weight into place to establish dominance. He's in charge and it's obey - no ifs or buts.

Do you have any plans or ideas on what you'd do with one of the Wings if you are tapped to support one? Gotta touch base with the other heads first TBH, but definitely make a laundry list of things that can be run in a low-stress way over a year.

Only Shootin' Stars Break The Mold!

Rider's Name: G'ar
Rider's Age: 33 turns
Dragon's Name: Marasemeth
Dragon's Age: 12 turns
Dragon Color: Blue
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? Western Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved PC
What role do they currently hold? Wingsecond
What role are they looking for? Wingsecond
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality: From his candidate days, G'ar has struggled to draw close to anyone, or even to adequately express his feelings. That doesn't necessarily mean he is cruel or cold; in fact, he is nothing but polite and respectful to his peers. He makes good conversation, and works rather well with others...it is the moment where the work is done, where everyone goes back to their weyrs that the walls come up. He is content to linger alone with Marasemeth, appearing only if necessary for meals or special events. Even when intruded upon, he retains his slightly detached style of graciousness. In his work, he is dedicated and steadfast. He has no fear of hard work, and strives to gain approval for his efforts both from his superiors and within himself. This is a lingering aspect from his candidacy—being left standing time after time, turn after turn, and only finally impressing months before he would have aged out promoted a low self-confidence and a desperate need for approval from others that has only yet begun to dull as Marasemeth has reassured him that he is a good, and strong person. Now in his thirties, it is more a force of habit than born out of genuine self-doubt. Because it is Marasemeth that has essentially validated his entire existence he is understandably protective of the blue. However, he is so conscious of the danger of losing the blue, so petrified of letting that happen, of being alone again, he frequently goes beyond what is normal or even appropriate with safety measures. He would rather insist that the blue sit quietly with him than let the dragon go be social with other dragons. He argues regularly over if the blue will chase in flights or not. He is like the parent that would rather have his child avoid all scrapes and falls than let the child fall and learn from it.

Rider's History as Wingleader or Wingsecond: Off-screen, heightened levels of weather awareness and gear upkeep. No major disasters or even injuries (AKA we've not done IC threadfall yet so technically he has a spotless victory record). Has mothered a lot of his wing, and probably irritated a few folks. Hasn't made any friends, most likely.

How do they see themselves and their position? They honestly think they're a bit over-ranked, but being a wingsecond gives him just a bit more control over what happens and what condition Marasemeth has to fly in. Basically, he doesn't think he's worth it, but now that he has the rank, he's doing all he can to use it as best he can to keep his wing (and thereby Marasemeth) safe.

How long have they been Wingleader/Second? 1.5 – 2 turns.

Why do they want to keep their position? To keep being able to obsessively drill and train and prepare, and also because he thinks Mara DOES deserve to be looked up to, and he'd feel immense guilt if he were demoted.

How do they feel about their current Wing and Weyr? It's kept Marasemeth safe and unscarred so G'ar LOVES them. They're good, dutiful fellows, and frankly he knows nothing about them, personally.

What would they do differently as a leader now that they've got some experience under their belt? He's probably learned how far he can push his obsessiveness onto the wing, and which of them respond better to him asking them to do things, and which it's better for him to just do things for—like checking their gear a third time, etc.

What would you (OOCly) do different with the character if you are allowed to keep the position =or= given a new role? Actually play them more? I hope?

How active have you been with the character? LOLOLOLOLOL I mean the sum of his activity was banging the Weyrsecond and having a few conversations, so like. No hard feelings if y'all pass on'm.

Rider's Name: D'mar
Rider's Age: 19 turns
Dragon's Name: Strigonth
Dragon's Age: 1 turn
Dragon Color: Blue
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? Western Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved PC
Will you need a colorist to create art for this character? Nope
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality:
Cleverness, wit, and confidence all mixed well and wrapped in an unfortunately bitter shell of pride and flimsy morals make up the core of D'mar's being. He was raised well (read: wealthy), and had the best education his hold could offer, even before he got into Courtesan-craft Hall. This instilled in him a sense of superiority, of knowing more than his peers, of being outright better than them. He's been prepared all his life to take over his father's role, and known that no one else would do, because no one else could do. Wish a sharp (but critical) eye, a keen mind, and the drive to do everything he put his hand to not just well, but well enough to stand out, he has never, ever been one to leave things half done.

He was born with the ugly gift for being able to give someone a compliment that manages to both sound genuine and scathing at once, and the social cleverness to know how and when and what to say. Always looking down upon, but brilliant at feigning loyalty and respect for those above him. Those skills in particular have kept him both alive and in control of his immediate future since thread's return; his ego and sense of self-worth thriving in the face of challenges met.

What little genuine love he possesses is deeply hidden beneath a veil of distaste and exasperation. It is (or was) reserved for his younger twin and less so for his father. The rare instances he can be found being comforting, encouraging, or generous are all centered around his family...and similarly all are laced with words of displeasure or scolding or sighs, and even a few of the exalting (though false) praises he dishes out for the rest of the world. For the rest of humanity he has little time or care to spend. The majority of them aren't worth note, and those that are seem more suited to being trod underfoot as he presses himself upwards on the ladder of life.

He is willing to do nigh anything to keep himself and his brother (and father to an extent) in comfort and security, though he has yet to perpetrate anything entirely dastardly. Given the choice of an honorable means of making ends meet and a less-than-honorable route, he will nine times out of ten pick the honorable one, if only to be sure that in the eyes of those who might be watching he can be said to be clean. When no one is around to see, the choice becomes less certain. Which will yield greatest profit? Which is the more pleasant road to walk down? Does the dishonorable path involve making misery for those who, for whatever reason, have wronged him? As long as no one knows about the things he does and would do, he is just as likely to dabble in the dark underbelly of life as rise above it.

He is at times petulant, and once given any level of power, he is prone to using it as he sees fit, regardless of the opinions of others. After all, if they knew so much, why was he given the job and not them? No, the power is his, and his to use. And if some people get hurt in the process, well, he's always been apt at covering his tracks with misdirected blame and reasoning that seems sound...

Altogether he is an unsavory, immoral young man, with only the memory of his love for his family and genuine skill at getting things done and done well to redeem him.

Strengths: Confident, diligent, detail-oriented, responsible.
Weaknesses: Acrimonious, treacherous, proud, overcritical.

Rider's History: Raised the son of a lord holder (of a very small cothold), he was trained and prepped to take over after him. He received training at the courtesan hall for diplomacy and general etiquette, but his hold was destroyed in First Fall before he could go back. He moved to Western to try to become a rider, seeking a return to what glory and power he had expected to inherit, and went on to impress a blue at his first standing—after being used as a chewtoy by a bronze. He suffered a fairly long period of depression following the event, as well as a slow physical recovery, but eventually got his s**t together and did quite well on the back end of his training and in fighting thread, even taking a turn or two to play wingsecond in the weyrling wing.

Where did your rider Impress from? Western Weyr

How long have they been stationed at High Reaches or Western Weyr? A bit over a turn.

How do they feel about Thread's return? Furious, mostly, but when one door closes, another is opened. He's making the best of it, and can't complain too much because it did bring him Strigonth—even if it destroyed his home and inheritance.

How do they feel about their current Weyr? Given he rides blue, he loves it. Strigonth has helped him to see the opportunities there, and together they're keen to weave their webs about the place. Some parts of it they disdain—who doesn't have a few qualms with home?—but they'd do no better anywhere else, so Western has their loyalty (at least for now).

Why do they want to be a Wingsecond, ICly? POWER. RECOGNITION. FAME. And because they're both absolutely sure they're good enough, and smart enough, and if not today, tomorrow. It's a step towards their eventual goals, and they both know they were born for greatness. They deserve this, at the least.

Describe their leadership style in less than 60 characters. The brains behind the brawn; a puppeteer with silken strings

Why do you (OOCly) think they'd be a good fit? Because despite their negative OOC reputation, they really are a trained diplomat, as well as smart, mature, and confident. They were raised to lead, though in a different capacity, and they're ready to devote their entire life to filling that role... at least until the next rung up the ladder opens up for them to climb to. Not to mention, Strigonth can be very persuasive in getting his followers and underlings to do what he wants, can't he?

How would they react if they were given command of the Wing during a rough Threadfall? Honestly, they would expect it to happen sooner or later. They would keep their heads and do what they could to get through the fall with as little damage as possible. They're confident, and they would effectively 'become' wingleader in the moment, and expect the wing to obey like they would their usual wingleader. They would definitely make their own calls on maneuvers, and of course they won't be perfect, but no one will ever be able to say they were cowards, or that they were indecisive.

How would they react if they were asked to deal with a wingrider who is causing division among the wingriders and who already seems to loathe you and refuses to follow your commands? Publicly, they would try to talk it out, being sure to take the visible role of 'better man', and doing their utmost to make the wingrider be the one to come off as overly aggressive and possibly unfit for duty, leading to properly reporting the issue to his betters while framing it with a note of concern that perhaps the rider needs rest, or removed from the wings until they're ready to come back, poor thing. Privately, with whispered threats and promises, and they're not above a show of force—either through Strigonth, if the rider's on a chromatic, or through D'mar's connections. Everyone has someone, or something, they love, after all, and it would be so sad if something were to happen...

Do you have any plans or ideas on what you'd do with one of the Wings if you are tapped to support one? D'mar would love to have the wing practice 'his' drills as well as the wingleader's, just in case the above 'given command in rough fall' scenario happened. He'd probably eventually want to start making moves towards wingleader position through popular opinion, but he's also young enough to know that they'd do better to hunker down for a few turns after this step up, and build their own skills and resume. He'd also ideally like to start sussing out who of his wing Strigonth can... influence... but not for any bad reasons or anything >>

Which Weyr are they Stationed at? High Reaches Weyr

~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality:
U'zan has been around the block a time or two, and he knows exactly what he's doing and where he's going, and every shortcut and high-end shop along the way. He's very good. So really you should just listen to whatever he tells you, because obviously if you were half as good as him, you'd be where he is, you'd be riding bronze, you'd have the ear of the Weyrwoman. But...you don't! And that's just fine, just fine. We need people at all levels, so just sit back, relax, and let U'zan shine.

He's got all the confidence of a gate-keeping white man who knows even a little bit about whatever topic you've brought up and is ready to 'mansplain' it to you. But sharditall, the trouble is that he actually knows things, and is good at them, so if you can get past his shitty attitude, you probably will actually learn something.

While he doesn't always work hard (skating by on his charm and clever ability to whip things together at the last moment when he needs to) he definitely parties hard. Known for making a point of getting only the best wines, the choicest foods, and inviting only the best of the best around the Weyr to indulge, he is a huge fan of really letting go when he lets go. The man's definitely thrown open his doors after the night of a gold flight and had ten and twenty people (of all ranks, races, and genders) come staggering out with hangovers, hickies, and little party-favor bags!

Unfortunately it is only during party time that U'zan really sees everyone as equal. Aside from the Weyr's goldriders and Headwoman, he lacks a certain respect for women. That's not to say he's aggressive, or prone to insulting them...but facts are facts. Women aren't as strong, don't have the same stamina, and for turns and turns were relegated to at MOST riding greens for a reason. Sure, now and then a really exceptional one will crop up, maybe make wingsecond even, but they're the exception, not the rule. He is inclined to scoff at women on blues, and instantly question if women on browns really are women.

Of course, there are things women are far better at than men. Organization, preparation, even tactics are all suitable for ladies, but the carrying out of those tactics, the utilization of those preparations, should be left to the men. Not to mention, but men are frankly expendable, in terms of continuing to keep Pern's numbers up. They could die by the score and things would carry on. But women? No, women are far more valuable, like gold dragons, for their reproductive capabilities than men are, if you ask him.

Pros: Capable, confident, charismatic.
Cons: Arrogant, indulgent, sexist.

Rider's History:
What's there to tell about how good old U'zan's childhood? Not too terribly much, really, honestly, but he'll tell you anyway. His father was a rider—no one important, mind you, a bluerider and a fairly good searchrider, but little more—and his mother was a Holder girl, wooed to the Weyr for the chance to impress, and after being left standing was kept on in the kitchens and in the bedroom by the oh-so-charming searchrider who'd fetched her hence. Being young and lusty, and with his father's blue happy to chase any flashing green tail, it was only a matter of time before Udezan was brought, squalling and wriggling, into the world. He was a handsome child even then, but his parents were too busy (mostly with each other) to mind him, so off to the creche he went.

He came up with the rest of the weyrbrats, and thanks to his natural good looks and charm, had no trouble surrounding himself with a gaggle of friends (minions) and rising to the top of his little clique. By the time he was of age to step onto the sands, he was beyond cocky. His throng went with him, all headstrong and ready to impress together. Of course, that didn't work out, and he was left, flummoxed on the sands and alone. He rebounded from the disappointment swiftly—hadn't the clutch been so small, hadn't the bronzes been scrawny, hadn't the attitudes of all the hatchlings been subpar?—with the help of his remaining yes-men (and ample wine!) and moved on, through clutch after clutch with more or less the same criticisms. His charisma made each time seem genuine, as if he wasn't just scuffing the new riders to shine himself back up, but it would be fair to say he made himself believe it too.

At long last, near the end of his tenure as a candidate, the day came. A gorgeous golden dragonet spilled onto the sands, and a beat later, a strapping bronze. Both were large for their age, and the bronze seemed intent on standing guard for his sister, snapping and hissing at anyone, candidate or dragonet, that drew too near to her. When Udezan, now U'zan, asked the bronze, Balizarth, about it later, the dragonet had simply stated that it was his duty to 'wrangle these untamed, disobedient masses' and 'teach them some respect'.

If Balizarth chose U'zan for his confidence and self-sure nature, or because the cocky hedonist was the biggest challenge to bronze could see to tackle, is still being debated.

From there it was all smooth sailing. He ascended to his destined place, astride his bronze, and has been living it up ever since. Working hard (enough to maintain the lifestyle he has come to enjoy) and playing hard, he's made ample friends and enemies, and at least one or two kids, actually. What, you didn't think a party-man like him'd make it through all those flight-nights without popping a bun in an oven or two, did you?

Where did your rider Impress from? High Reaches Weyr

How long have they been stationed at High Reaches or Western Weyr? All his life.

How do they feel about Thread's return? It's a pain, a tragedy, really, but hey... it's what they were born to fight, isn't it? He's callously unbothered by it, because he didn't lose anyone he cared about in it, and those he lost were ready to be lost that way. Thread's return's just made him MORE important, MORE critical, and honestly, it keeps Balizarth busy.

How do they feel about their current Weyr? Paradise on earth. A place where the girls are girls and the men are men, and bronzeriders are kings. He was raised on the teat of HR's doctrine, and as he had the luck to obtain a bronze, well, that just proves that he's right, doesn't it? He gets the Lower Folk's jealousy, but really now, he never said you weren't invited to his party—just that the VIP section is for your betters. Basically, he's a cliche of what the rest of the world thinks HR bronzeriders are like, and happy to be it.

Why do they want to be a Wingleader, ICly? It's more Balizarth's desire than U'zan's. U'zan would rather indulge in what he's already earned, but Balizarth has reminded him that moving up means they get to rub elbows with even more important people, and get nicer rooms, better wine, all that. Balizarth wants the rank because he wants to better serve Eveleth, who is effectively a goddess in his eyes. For queen and country, basically—though if he is not chosen, he will respect the choice, with the same unflagging dutiful devotion as ever.

Describe their leadership style in less than 60 characters. Might makes right, but may as well look good doing it.

How would they react if one of their riders died after making a bad call during Threadfall? If the rider made the call and died for it? Good riddance. We don't need idiots or free thinkers here. At least they died for the cause, but neither of them will waste time or tears over it. Time to see who can fill that spot.

If U'zan/Balizarth made the call and it got the rider killed, that's just the way it goes. It was only one rider, after all, and they've got more. It kept thread from hitting the ground, and they should all be ready to and expecting to die anyway. A small wake might be held by U'zan, who'd supply the wine to the rest of the wing, but inside neither of them would feel too badly.

How would they react if one of their wingriders starts to get mouthy and doesn't respect your leadership? U'zan would laugh it off, because who cares?? Some nobody chromatic rider wants to talk, let them. Birds tweet and bugs buzz all the time with as much effect. Of course, then he'd turn around and have Balizarth (who cares very much, how DARE they) drive them into the dirt, either through drills or physically, if he had to. If it was another bronze rider, U'zan would actually take note, and then Mr. Nice Party Man is done. I'd say "talk s**t get hit", but they're better than that. Enjoy your immediate demotion (if there's a demotion to be had), and having a permanent place on every wing's s**t list for the next five turns. Balizarth is more than happy to leave his mark, be it mental or physical, on those who get too uppity.

Why do you (OOCly) think they'd be a good fit? U'zan probably wouldn't be, he's too hedonistic and careless, not to mention being a bit too sure that no one else has as top-tier ideas as he does. Balizarth however is an A+++ 500% perfect choice, because his sole drives in life are to protect the Weyr and to instill undying, unwavering devotion in Eveleth and her mate. He's a champion of High Reaches mentality, and is happy to be the instrument the Weyr uses to break riders into competent, productive members of society.

Do you have any plans or ideas on what you'd do with one of the Wings if given one? Balizarth wants to run endless drills and sweeps, and post-hatching is keen to start spreading his thoughts against Western and any other non-HR dragons into the heads of his wing, so maybe some lecture sessions. U'zan would love to host some parties because he's trash.

Rider's Name: Ulix
Rider's Age: 41
Dragon's Name: Argoth
Dragon's Age: 21
Dragon Color: Brown
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? High Reaches Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved PC
Will you need a colorist to create art for this character? Nope
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality:
Ulix is unequivocally a beast of pride, and there's no point in denying or hiding it. He strides with the purpose of a feline, looking for what's his and what opportunities there are to add to them. Friends? He'll make sure you have the best, and you'll be sure to remember that he provided. Lovers? No such thing as unsatisfied, he rests assured. If it's associated with Ulix, it's a quality higher than normal, or else he'll shut that rumor up see to it that it is.

It's unfortunate that his better qualities tend to get swallowed up in his egoism, but it's not egoism without reason. He's, quite simply, a good Rider and a better hunter. He doesn't shy from danger, he prides himself on his accomplishments, and he thinks anyone who doesn't do the same is just kidding themselves or jealous. Words mean nothing, action is everything. That's not to say he's a boor without intelligence, though. On the contrary, Ulix is clever in ways that makes his less noble traits seem even worse, as he's happy to take advantage of or create situations that appeal to him or otherwise are entertaining. But hey, if you're a friend, you can be sure he'd do the same to help you out? That's something?

Colorist to a T, he also tends to believe that women, as the fairer sex, need more tending to or patience than a man. It's just biology. It's also why he's perfectly fine with his brown Argoth as, while not afforded the same position as a bronzerider, it allows him to flit between upper and lower society (as he sees it), letting him reap the benefits of both. Order is what makes Pern safe; those that try to buck it need a swift kick in the head to find their place.

His temper, when agitated, is something to behold.

Rider's History: Born in a cothold near Keroon, Ulix began life as a farmboy with ambition beyond his meager circumstance. Canines were his constant companion when his mother wasn't out at one of her multiple jobs, along with his brother's and sister's flits. With no father in the picture, and in spite of being the middle child, Ulix decided he needed to step up and fill the role of "man of the house." And he fulfilled and enjoyed that role, whatever his siblings spouted: he made sure they all did their chores, that the hounds and flits were taken care of, and that discipline was reported when mom came home.

Which of course meant he usually wasn't the one being punished. Golden boy, remember? Ulix was the darling of his mother's eye, being so responsible as he was while she was away. It led to a tense relationship with his brother and sister, but sure. Make him the bad guy.

Having always adventured into the forest growing up, it was no surprise that he eventually made his way into the Beastcraft Hall as an apprentice hunter, sharpening his burgeoning talent for scouting and trapping prey. From there he was Searched, and he put his first love on hold for the chance to become a dragon rider at High Reaches. Ulix thrived in the environment, though he was a bit brusque with certain other candidates, and eventually Impressed to the sheepish brown of a clutch. (It came as as surprise, given that Ulix was such a passionate man, his own dragon seemed to be frightened.)

After five dutiful years, however, he chose to leave the weyr for a brief sabbatical: his mother had fallen ill, and he felt it was his duty to take care of her. In the meantime, he sought different opportunities to earn his marks and get her treatment. The thrill of the hunt overflowed into other talents: picking up men and women soon became something to master, not just for conquests in bed, but for his job to find unruly Pernese avoiding the law. When his mother was well enough for travel, he brought her to High Reaches weyr so that he could continue to look after her while returning to his old post.

It was one year before Thread returned, so it was better timing than some. Cold shoulder or not, he eventually overcame it and is now an active rider, though Ulix can often be seen visiting his mother and her hounds.

Where did your rider Impress from? HR

How long have they been stationed at High Reaches or Western Weyr? After their 5 years, they left for a sabbatical to help Ulix’s ill mother, during which he cultivated a small standing as a bounty hunter. When she was well again, Ulix brought her with him to HR and sat though the cold reception until it thawed, and has remained since. It was good luck this happened before Thread returned.

How do they feel about Thread's return?
Argoth? Nervous. Hopeful to rise to the challenge and afraid of doing it wrong. Leans on his rider’s confidence and obedient to commands.

Ulix? Annoyed, really. Had quietly thought HR was kinda nuts about it returning but been smart enough not to say so. Grateful to have the only family he cares about in a safe spot and fights with a fierce grin. Wholly takes advantage of the opportunities Thread can create for the less fortunate if it benefits him.

How do they feel about their current Weyr?
HR is cozy enough, when he’s in his fur-lined weyr looking down on the little people. He chafes at the idea of a colorist leading despite his conservative core, only in so far as he truly believes he has the calling to lead. And his dear Argoth deserves to be recognized too, of course, and get nothing but the best for all he puts up with. In short: has great perks for the dangerous life, but wants more power and recognition.

Why do they want to be a Wingsecond, ICly?
Power. This is the most a brownrider at HR can aim for at the moment, though Ulix aims to be so exemplary as to eventually pave the way for himself to be considered wingleader. At the moment he has been providing for several people in exchange for pleasures and craftwork, including Keris (Prism Shine), who has recently born him a son, to keep her in the weyr and away from her previous life situation. Having the amenities of a wingsecond would explain why people bother with him at all when he can be a sexist pig, and Ulix is absolutely the type of man to gather political power to wield on top of that.

Describe their leadership style in less than 60 characters.
Instill pride in the troops by being the perfect example. Weed out insecurity, laser focus shortcomings, offer a drink afterwards.

Why do you (OOCly) think they'd be a good fit?
HR has been touted as the biggest weyr of traditionalists. There should naturally be those who reinforce these beliefs in the upper echelon. I also like the idea of providing an antagonist in the form of someone who obviously enjoys his power and uses it to great/at least decent effect, even if it’s just as a wingsecond.

How would they react if they were given command of the Wing during a rough Threadfall?
Feel absolutely fantastic and ready to lead, regardless of the weather. Ulix would act the reluctant commander, of course, but he would relish the time he can order others around - and well, too.

How would they react if they were asked to deal with a wingrider who is causing division among the wingriders and who already seems to loathe you and refuses to follow your commands?
Call them out in public first to show that he is being the “better man”, move to private to nail the oroblem down, or move it to include wingleader only if absolutely necessary, as he feels it’s his pride and it’s something he must defend himself. Ulix gets heavy handed if someone’s insubordination is that obvious, and he has no problems dealing with it himself. A show of force is sometimes necessary, and ain’t nobody got time for Mx. Weh-I-Don’t-Like-You when Thread’s around.

Do you have any plans or ideas on what you'd do with one of the Wings if you are tapped to support one?
Absolutely depends on which wing he gets to and who is his leader/leaders. Ulix on his own is a bit of a handful, and off duty can get lecherous, but when it comes to Threadfall he and Argoth are beasts. It enforces the idea that a good dragon rider isn’t necessarily a nice one. Additionally, he doesn’t mind “supporting” a bit of rebellion, but only if it eventually puts his brown and him as Wingleaders. Manipulation is a tool he is happy to use if he sees an opportunity, and it’d be fun to see some who want changes in the weyr to decide whether it’s worth having him part of the movement or not. After all, as a wingsecond he -does- have some clout...

~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality: Something about R’ogun smacks of a big brother, or perhaps a youthful and trendy dad. He’s all business in front of a group, but one-on-one interaction is his specialty and is usually a pretty casual affair. It’s done that way on purpose, to give anarchic or anxious wingmembers a sense of being “off the record.” He’s very approachable, and there’s always a sense of placid serenity when a tough subject comes up. A lot of it is calculated and impartial, being a part of his job, but though he doesn’t often say so in tender words, he really does care about people, especially those in his charge. So much so that at times he’ll overwork himself trying to fit everyone into his already busy schedule. The added stress interferes with his sleep patterns in a most unpleasant manner, but he tries to let the bags under his eyes be the only indication of the lengthy and horrible dreams he’ll have on those nights.

R’ogun is very detail-oriented and remembers ridiculous amounts of information about people and things that are important to him. He collects glass marbles in every color and dice made from every material crafters will utilize. The dice are his real passion, and he is able to recall who made them and when, the story behind their creation, what they were made from, how much he paid for them, and even what he was wearing and the weather at the time of the transaction or receipt of the items as a gift. He’d like to have a set from every Master crafter on Pern, or several, if they’re uniquely-made sets. Sometimes his passion goes a little too far, however. More than a few of his treasured objects were stolen or bought on an irresponsible whim with the last of his marks. Though he’s come a long way during his turns at High Reaches, he still suffers strong temptations and occasionally falls prey to them.

After the extremes he’s experienced throughout his young life, there is very little that upsets him these days. It takes a lot of work to ruffle his feathers, and even when he does get angry, he will remain quite calm—alarmingly so at times. This is really when his particular eccentricities manifest at their maximum potency. One such idiosyncrasy is, in an attempt to control himself and anything else within his reach, he’ll go on a rampage in his weyr, counting out his collected trinkets, cleaning and organizing them. His furniture will be re-positioned, sometimes lined up like little wherries in a row by size, shape, or some other determination, or sometimes scattered about in bizarre places. On nights like this, if he sleeps at all, he will usually do so in an unusual location, perhaps with Casreth, perhaps in the bath, perhaps up on the heights, if the weather is good for it.

Rider's History: During his early life, Renogun was the whipping boy for some holder’s spoiled son who took full advantage of that servitude. The punishments he took on behalf of the son were heavy and often, and the son seemed to enjoy watching him suffer. Life was all about unfairness, hatred, and seeking justice. In pursuit of the latter, he finally set fire to the boy’s room. Though no harm came to the son, the Lord Holder literally threw Renogun to his feral felines as punishment, went to bed, and checked on them in the morning. Enough evidence of a death was left behind that no one suspected that the felines had not eaten their fill that night. His fingers numbered only nine and his wounds bled badly, but Renogun managed to escape the one-way journey to their bellies.

He lived on the streets as a wanton thief for several turns, suffering the loss of a few more finger joints and gaining permanent marks on his skin as he crossed the wrong sorts of people. During a Gather where he’d been studiously pickpocketing every likely-looking person, he was caught. Fortuitously, he was Searched (or perhaps “Searched,” but he was never sure) by a High Reaches dragon. His acceptance was probably the only thing that saved him from losing another finger, but what he really cared about was the promise of a full belly and a bed to sleep in.

After being there but a short time, he hated the Weyr. He hated being under what felt like constant surveillance, being ordered about, and always expecting but never actually receiving the punishment he knew he must deserve. It kept a layer of fear about him, always waiting for the moment when it would come. Because he never expected this little fantasy world to last, he did the bare minimum required of him and nothing more—even less, when he could get away with it. He definitely did not want to become invested, lest he become attached and everything he had be torn away from him.

He was surprised, to say the least, when Casreth was shelled and a voice in his head told him that he’d done some bad things, but he was a good person and was loved more than he could imagine. He’d been told similar things a hundred times before, but it’d meant nothing coming from people who had no idea what they were talking about. He was sure they were only spouting the usual hackneyed lines they gave anyone they were already convinced would never amount to anything. Somebody who could actually read his thoughts, who saw everything he was and everything he’d done, and still had something good to say about him, much less still loved him… well, that was different. That meant something.

It was a start, but change did not happen overnight. Life as weyrlings was a trial, with Renogun (now R’ogun) continuously alternating between pushing the Weyrlingmaster’s buttons and completely giving up on himself. The only thing that kept him going was Casreth, the one light in his life. That and the fact that the Weyrlingmaster was merciful was fortuitous for the young man, because he and his dragon had to suffer through two turns of remedial training before they could be trusted to graduate and fly in a fighting wing.

He was never able to pinpoint any particular moment when he truly noticed it, but he eventually became aware that V’mel, as well as a few others in the Weyr, had been a constant presence in his life—a consistent source of direction and boundaries that he’d badly needed. Instead of getting kicked out of the Weyr, R’ogun and Casreth had been allowed to stay and were given the attention and correction they needed until things finally clicked. R’ogun was sorry that he’d wasted so much time and caused himself and Casreth both to remain children in the eyes of the Weyr, but it wasn’t rubbed in his face. He was allowed to move forward. There was no further punishment.

Though part of him always felt his personal story was a little cliche, he came to realize that it seemed so because there were a lot of other folks like himself in the world. In the turns that followed, he and Casreth naturally connected with riders who had dealt with or were currently dealing with similar backgrounds and attitudes. Instead of letting the naysayers drag them back down, they tried to pull these folks in the opposite direction. High Reaches was a good place to be. You could be your own person while still having your dignity and a purpose—and a home. Sometimes other arguments worked better. Sure, you can go back whenever you want. I mean, Bitra is so much better than this sharding prison. Remember how great it was before you had all the food you wanted cooked by someone else and set out on a table for you every day? It’s going to be so much better when you have to figure out how to feed a dragon as well as yourself. Totally worth the freedom from those stupid drills and lectures. No, Gedyth, they don’t leave buckets of free meat by the kitchen door in Bitra Hold. And they don’t have a herd to take from, unless you want your rider to be arrested for stealing. You have to go outside the hold and hunt everything yourself. Yes, in the wild. Still others only needed someone to connect with, someone who would care enough to spend time with them one-on-one.

The pair’s loyalty to the Weyr was won in full, and when they felt ready, they began to prepare for the possibility of someday earning an official leadership position.

Where did your rider Impress from? High Reaches

How long have they been stationed at High Reaches or Western Weyr? 13 turns

How do they feel about Thread's return? R’ogun feels the same as he felt before it returned—it is an honor to serve the Weyr that gave him worth and a purpose, and High Reaches’ survival is paramount. Now that Thread is back, that survival requires his role to be carried out as well as possible to ensure the skies stay full of fighting dragons.

How do they feel about their current Weyr? R’ogun is one of V'mel's scornful-delinquent-to-upstanding-rider success stories, and is presently a consummate High Reaches supporter and advocate.

Why do they want to be a Wingleader, ICly? Loyalty to the Weyr, and relatively newfound belief in himself. He never had a family, never had anything to live for. Now he’s got all the options in the world within reach and feels he can do some good as a Wingleader. Casreth is dutiful and has a strong paternal instinct. He wants to see to it that all dragons in his wing will thrive and succeed in their duties.

Describe their leadership style in less than 60 characters. Laid back but shrewd, a dedicated shepherd, keen on details

How would they react if one of their riders died after making a bad call during Threadfall? They would legitimately mourn, though mostly in private so that the wing’s morale wasn’t further downed. If it was due to R’ogun’s own call, he’ll take the blame but knows there’s no going back to fix it. Same as if a rider was lost by their own mistake. They can’t be brought back, so he won’t push the rest into a frenzy or overwork them to atone or attempt to prevent it from happening again. He’ll keep it consistent, make adjustments where needed, and those who truly care will push themselves to be their absolute best.

How would they react if one of their wingriders starts to get mouthy and doesn't respect your leadership? If it’s a one-off situation, R’ogun won’t fault that rider and in any case won’t make a scene if it happened in front of the other wingmembers. It could be they’re just having a bad day, or maybe there’s something deeper that needs some working on. He’ll take them aside privately later on to discuss what happened and what will be done about it. He’ll make every effort to get to the bottom of things and correct poor behavior or performance because it’s worth the effort to see a secure Weyr with full, compliant flight rosters.

Why do you (OOCly) think they'd be a good fit? All of the IC reasons for their wanting to be WL. R’ogun’s memory would be very useful for remembering relevant records, details about his wingriders’ personalities and needs, etcetera. He will sing HR’s praises and is never apologetic for the Weyr’s policies (or his own if in a leadership position) but will do his best to try to get naysayers to at least understand the need for them.

Do you have any plans or ideas on what you'd do with one of the Wings if given one? Going off of what I learned with K’ienn/Trespassers and watching general day-to-day shop activity, I’d probably stay away from straight up ORPs or anything too complicated. Simple, brief dice games and prompt-style RPs would probably garner more activity. I’m still ambitious to have and make fun for everyone in the gang!

Only Shootin' Stars Break The Mold!

Rider's Name: Ay’ril
Rider's Age: 31
Dragon's Name: Yffengeth
Dragon's Age: 14
Dragon Color: Bronze
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? High Reaches Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved
What role do they currently hold? Wingsecond
What role are they looking for? Wingsecond
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality: Ay’ril is a good man, the type to peace-keep and encourage those in his circle to be the best they can be. He was always a nice fellow, but he could have easily turned out bitter and resentful, if he’d has the proper mindset for it. For turns he watched his younger brother A’myl, a whiterider, suffer all sorts of provocation and torment for his dragon’s color, and even got a little overflow himself, even though he was a bronzerider. Out of a sense of honor, he chose to keep his head above water, and tried his best to buoy his brother up, as well. They both worked hard and were careful of their own actions, and are both now in good standing as riders at High Reaches, though the color battle has, of course, never ended.

That doesn’t mean all is forgiven, however. He remembers each of those who caused harm to his little brother, and most certainly will not do them any favors. He also holds a lot of ire for one of his own brothers, for reasons he never speaks of.

Ay’ril is very careful around High Reaches natives, or those he knows are colorist or otherwise extremely traditional. He’s actually quite in line with the whole color ranking system, understanding that each color has a clear Threadfighting role for the good of all, but not with the way some look down their noses at the chromatics. Before he’d met his dear bronze Yffengeth, he’d been quite set on Impressing a blue, himself. For the life of him, he couldn’t see why any of them deserved to be picked on or thought to be “lesser” somehow. It’s led him to be acutely mindful of his expression and words when in mixed company.

When at ease, and occasionally as a defensive mechanism, Ay’ril is known to joke around make light of unpleasant situations to try and lift the mood. He used to be quite the prankster, until his whiterider brother became the butt of many humiliating and sometimes dangerous pranks. Now he just doesn’t do it, out of a concern that he might accidentally case harm to someone.

Rider's History as Wingsecond: Ay’ril became Wingsecond of the Hurricanes when his comrade A’dras became their leader. He honestly wasn’t expecting it because of an earlier struggle with balancing duty and family, so he has pounced on the opportunity, dedicated himself to the job, and has done well. He’s even made some new friends!

How do they see themselves and their position? He’s confident in his ability to do the work, and is quite comfortable with the job and his wingmates. It’s been a bit of a bad winter, what with the weather and now a sudden profusion of Threadfall-related injuries going on, but he doesn’t blame himself or anyone else. He knows he and the rest of the Hurricanes are doing their best.

How long have they been Wingleader/Second? About 1.5 years/Turns.

Why do they want to keep their position =OR= if they're trying for a different role, why do they want to change their position? He truly enjoys where he is rank-wise. It’s challenging and pays well, but he still has time enough for important things such as family.

How do they feel about their current Wing and Weyr? He’s at home with the Hurricanes, they’re like an extended family. High Reaches, while a strict and sometimes too-political environment, is also home, even more so now that his brothers have joined him there. Even though both of them are on “lesser” dragons, Ay’ril trusts enough in their competence to have chosen to err most often on the side of tradition in his duties, understanding that it has absolutely worked well for a long, long time.

What would they do differently as a leader now that they've got some experience under their belt? Trust in himself and his abilities more, including being more outspoken when he notices minor slacking. Again, he doesn’t blame anyone for all the Threadfall accidents that are happening lately, but he’s aware that some of them could have been avoided, and may have been prevented if small mistakes had been corrected earlier before they had a chance to grow or multiply.

What would you (OOCly) do different with the character if you are allowed to keep the position =or= given a new role? Actually involve him in wing-related stuff this time around! I unfortunately had zero handle on him as a character to start with, which kept me from doing much at all with him. (Note: I am also OK with shifting him to another wing if needed to balance out the numbers!)

How active have you been with the character? A handful of RP, and most it it within the last three months, due to the reason stated above. I can now confidently say HE LIVESSSSSS! XD Activity check thread (RIP K’ienn)

Only Shootin' Stars Break The Mold!

Rider's Name: Z'tir
Rider's Age: 54
Dragon's Name: Siloth
Dragon's Age: 28
Dragon Color: Bronze
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? High Reaches Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved PC
What role do they currently hold? Wingleader
What role are they looking for? Wingleader
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality: The most interesting man in the world. His only regret is not knowing what regret feels like. Otherwise known as traditionalist a*****e. That douchebag. The Bronzerider you love to hate and hate to love. He is supremely confident, self-assured, and can't imagine a world without himself in it. After all, Pern needs to be saved, doesn't it? And Z'tir is just the man for the job. Sign him up, D'mon. They've been friends ever since their dragons hatched from the same clutch, and everyone knew that he was destined for greatness. He hasn't quite managed to get that Weyrleader title yet, but he does know that it's in good hands. For now. He's a bit of a narcissist, an egotist, and he has complete faith in the system. After all, it worked for him, didn't it? He and Siloth are right where they should be, and if someone's panties are in a twist over it, well, that's not his problem, is it?

He was practicing for this role as a weyrbrat at his father's heels, and it fits him like a glove. Yes, he knows better than you what is good for you. No, he's not going to take no for an answer. And yes, you do need to practice that dive one more time. Count yourself lucky that he is not sending you back with the weyrlings for the training that you obviously need. He is exactly the kind of Bronzerider that the stereotypes are based off of, and he takes a certain pride in fitting them to a tee. Other men might be apologetic about the entitlement that they possess above most other riders, but not Z'tir. Z'tir was born for this, everyone knew it, and he's just getting his due.

Everyone has their place, but in most cases, it happens to be beneath his own. That's okay. There's nothing wrong with being a wingrider, nothing wrong with doing the little jobs that need to be done to keep the Weyr running smoothly. It's just that if they think that they deserve to rise above that station, well, they're clearly in the wrong Weyr. High Reaches has a long and proud tradition that dates back to the very colonization of Pern, and it has worked very well for them throughout that long history. He's product of the system, and he believes fully in it. He possesses a certain sense of noblesse oblige, or he would claim to, for he believes that his role as Bronzerider not only entitles him to certain privileges, but also a host of specific obligations to the people that he serves. Really, he thinks himself quite an honorable man, and he'll duel any man who says differently. Not a woman, obviously, that would be wrong, but definitely any man.

Rider's History: 54 Turns ago he was born to a Goldrider and her Bronzerider lover. His father, K'tir of Bronze Ikuneth, spent Turns pursuing his mother, Zara of Gold Akiyath. It was quite a romantic tale, he's told, though they were already together by the time that he was born. As a young man he had a little bit of angst when it appeared that he would not Impress, but then the best damn Bronze ever hatched and named him for his. His father never rose up in the ranks past Wingsecond, but Z'tir's early interactions with the man and his wing inspired the young man to become the leader that he is today. However, prior to his inevitable ascension to the role he had quite a checkered past. There is a not a place that Z'tir has not been to, and there are very few pleasures that he abstained from.

He's never been anything but a dragonrider, as he found crafting to be a dull pastime. He has taken great advantage of being a dragonrider, and has more than enjoyed his status as a Bronzerider. He's had quite a string of lovers, and has left many broken hearts behind. He has no regrets, not for that or for the numerous misadventures that he got up to in his youth. When it was time to come home and prove to the Weyr that he had the stuff to fulfill his obligation as a Bronzerider, he was happy to do so. His experiences out in the wide world only made him better prepared for what he might face as a High Reaches Wingleader. Z'tir has shared a fond friendship with D'mon for a number of Turns, and enjoys a friendly rivalry with the man. While he certainly enjoys the finer things in life, he knows when to buckle down and get the job done.

Recently he's picked up a very beautiful young courtesan as a lover, and no, he definitely didn't have to pay for the privilege. There was briefly a bit of a scandal when it was discovered that his rumored lover was male, but Z'tir is not worried about how certain elements of the Weyr might feel about his entanglements. One detail did need to be corrected, and that is that the young man is an ex-courtesan. In any event, it made a few waves. He's more than twice the man's age, and doesn't care a bit for what anyone might think about him or his lover. Really, it's none of their business.

The return of Thread has given him a renewed sense of purpose, and unlike so many of his peers he is excited for the opportunity to prove himself. He also bought the line that Thread would be returning, and he's only too smug to be proven correct on that score. Finally he and his are being given their proper respect, or at least an improvement upon the former sorry state of affairs. It's been exhilarating to watch their climb back to the top, and even more so to be a part of it. In fact, he'd claim that he's taken an important role in that process.

Other: He has a number of children, most of which he does not know about.

Where did your rider Impress from? High Reaches Weyr

How long have they been stationed at High Reaches or Western Weyr? His whole life.

How do they feel about Thread's return? Invigorated! He always believed that Thread would return, and he has had a renewed sense of purpose and assurance in the ways of the Weyr. Even though he's suffered personally from threadscore, he is not afraid of their ancient enemy, and more than up to the task of leading his wing in facing their implacable foe!

How do they feel about their current Weyr? High Reaches Weyr is, hands down, the best Weyr on Pern.

Why do they want to be a Wingleader, ICly? He has been a Wingleader for a number of Turns now and would be devastated to lose his rank - being a Wingleader is his life.

Describe their leadership style in less than 60 characters. Expects nothing but the best. Traditional, stern, paternal.

How would they react if one of their riders died after making a bad call during Threadfall? Z'tir would personally write the letter informing the rider's family of their passing. He would probably cry in secret, though he would show a stoic face in public. Then he would drill harder than ever, study the Threadfall patterns, and throw himself into his work.

How would they react if one of their wingriders starts to get mouthy and doesn't respect your leadership? He has yet to encounter a rider who doesn't respect his leadership. However, if this were to occur, he would drill the rider until they had better things to do than to question his methods.

Why do you (OOCly) think they'd be a good fit? Because he's traditional and at the same quite capable of leading a Wing. He also happens to be part of D'mon's bronzerider club, so he probably had an in to begin with.

Do you have any plans or ideas on what you'd do with one of the Wings if given one? I'd like to create a plotting thread for the Wing and run some more RPs - whether in the ORP format or via prompts that folks reply to.

Other: Z'tir's leadership style in more than 60 characters -Tough but "fair." In Z'tir's opinion, he's very fair. However, he has a clear idea of what each dragon color is best suited to and capable of, and will not put his people where he thinks they'll fail. He doesn't hold with complainers, and he expects the absolute best of his team. However, he's very proud of them and is a bit paternal towards them at times.

How do they see themselves and their position? He thinks he's a good leader - see: bronzerider club. However, he feels pretty bad about the times his kids have gotten hurt. Granted, he almost crippled himself saving one of them.

How long have they been Wingleader/Second? It's been somewhere around 18 turns at this point.

Why do they want to keep their position =OR= if they're trying for a different role, why do they want to change their position? It is his entire life. Take that away and he'd have next to nothing.

How do they feel about their current Wing and Weyr? Damn proud! High Reaches Weyr is the best Weyr, and Harbingers is hands down the best Wing, thank you.

What would they do differently as a leader now that they've got some experience under their belt? Well, as he has had a lot of experience under his belt until now, probably nothing different? Continue drilling his kids so that they work together as seamlessly as they can.

What would you (OOCly) do different with the character if you are allowed to keep the position =or= given a new role? Probably make more ORPs/prompts as outlined above.

How active have you been with the character? I defend my activity level by pointing directly to the approvals and baby dragons.

Only Shootin' Stars Break The Mold!

Rider's Name: Illa
Rider's Age: ~35
Dragon's Name: Fenrith
Dragon's Age: ~9 turns
Dragon Color: Brown
Which Weyr are they Stationed at? High Reaches Weyr
Are they an approved PC or someone made specifically for the contest? Approved PC
What role do they currently hold? Wingsecond
What role are they looking for? Wingsecond
~ ~ ~ ~

Rider's Personality: Loyal, gruff, take-charge, and cunning. Illa is not one to soon forget the behavior of others, be they friend or foe. Favors are returned in kind, and betrayal will be met with her own brand of justice. She has been known to cut people out of her life, such as her mother, who only looked to her for marks. While she is capable of forming deep attachments, they tend to require more work than is usual, as she grew up in a place where most people use one another. Trust does not come easily. When won, however, it is difficult to shake. When lost... let's just say that it's better not to lose it. On her dark side, she can be vindictive, controlling, and aloof. While she makes a capable leader, she does not possess the scheming qualities of some of Pern's best diplomats and politicians, leaving such courtly games of intrigue to others.

Rider's History as Wingleader or Wingsecond: Led successful Threadfalls, continued to lead the Wing in the absence of other authorities, generally showed themselves to be excellent in training their riders.

How do they see themselves and their position? Illa is very down to earth, as a general rule, and although she's done some good for her Wing, she has no illusions about being the best leader on Pern. She's been a commander for a lot longer than merely at the Weyr.

How long have they been Wingleader/Second? Since September 2017.

Why do they want to keep their position =OR= if they're trying for a different role, why do they want to change their position? It's important to her to stand as an example to other female Brownriders and Blueriders and show them what's possible. However, it's MORE important to ensure that her Wing, Weyr, and Pern are prepared to face Threadfall, and to do that they'll need to run things like the military operation a Weyr should be - and Illa's a damn fine General.

How do they feel about their current Wing and Weyr? Proud to be a part of the outfit. Although High Reaches has its downsides, it is unmatched in terms of knowing the strengths and weaknesses of its fighters. She believes in equality, however she isn't willing to sacrifice lives to see a true equality on all levels. Not all fighters are created equal to every task, after all - she'd never put her runner skirmishers to a task that she'd assign foot soldiers or the calvary!

What would they do differently as a leader now that they've got some experience under their belt? It's obvious that her Wingriders need more drills in how to best work together, especially with other Wings, and she'd cooperate with other leadership in order to make that happen.

What would you (OOCly) do different with the character if you are allowed to keep the position =or= given a new role? Combined ORPs, etc, with other Wings! Macuith and C'lusi are a good example of what happens when coordination goes awry.

How active have you been with the character? I point directly to my staff work in approvals, dragonet profiles, and etc.

Well, you guys did not make this easy or simple. First off, we'd like to thank everyone for entering the contest! We wouldn't be a shop without you choosing to participate and to make this place great!

For those who do not get promoted, or who lose their rank, please do not despair! This isn't anything personal, and Cheri and I had to do a lot of reading, digging around, rooting through RPs, etc. In some cases, individuals didn't manage to finish the profile or fill out all of the questions. :c In other cases, activity with the character played a role. This doesn't mean they are barred from trying out for Wingleader roles again! It just means as of this time, D'mon at High Reaches, or the Council at Western, has decided to try another tactic.

Leadership can change in the blink of an eye, so riders are accustomed to this. Losing ones role isn't seen as a personal failing, but could have happened for a number of reasons! For anyone who does not retain their position, you have every right to make up the reason! They could have chosen to retire, they could have been injured in Threadfall, the Council and/or D'mon chose to replace them for whatever reason, they wanted to start a family or have more time, etc. It's completely up to you guys on the reason why your characters no longer have their role... and it's up to you if you want them to try out again later!

Wait, what? Only 3 Wings a piece? Yes, that's right. In this case, Cheri and I have decided that we may have spread out PC wings a bit too thin. While it allowed for more Wingleader and more Wingsecond roles to be given away, it also meant there were less active players in each Wing. Instead of filling up the wings with many characters, it took substantially longer to really fill them out. We also noticed that there were some Wing Drills run that had no participants; we noticed that there were Wings full of players that were inactive, which gave the appearance of a fuller wing than was true; and there were cases where both the Wingseconds and Wingleaders poofed, leaving the Wings without much guidance. We're hoping by cutting down to the original three, we can have more activity, more character bonding, and more plots with one another. it also might make running Threadfall simpler for us as shop owners.

If the numbers and player activity continues, we have no objection opening up more wings. in fact, in High Reaches case, it's possible we may open up another Wing as early as this year, but we'll do so slowly. Additionally, if any of the players put in Inactive Wings return, we will transfer them back into PC wings. :3 So none of this is permanent, and none of this was done to disappoint you as writers.

Also, this is just a test and if it doesn't work out, we'll adjust it and try something new as needed. We hope you don't mind! heart We just have your fun in mind!

Curious about your new wing placements? Look no further than beneath this spoiler!
Heart's Fire Flight

In Western Weyr this particular Flight was name after fire. Those who came out to the West had to be passionate about such a move and such a change; not only was the Continent mostly unexplored, but the people and riders were essentially isolated. They were on their own. Some say the warm fires of the hearth inspired this Flight name, as fire can warm and comfort, even as it might burn, while others say it was inspired by the grit and spirit of local travelers. A few others still claim it was simply pulled from a hat. Honestly, Western Weyr might not entirely remember how the flight name came to be, but these days, with the need of dragonfire to fight the Great Enemy, it's a fitting name indeed.

It is common for the riders to call one another by a shortened Wing name, such as the "Furies" the "Blazers", etc..

Alpha Flight

In Echoes & Pern this Flight is historically the oldest Flight in High Reaches Weyr. Those who are put in this flight consider it a great honor, & Burning Aces Wing is the oldest Wing. It has survived centuries & changes, & was the first named Wing when High Reaches Weyr was formed. It's such an old Wing nobody even remembers what the name means or what a burning ace might be, but perhaps that's what makes it so unique. Oldtimers who came ahead made sure to bring the flight name with them.

Alpha Flight is a proud Flight, & is a big part & High Reaches Weyr history.

For Western Weyr, it worked out that it was easiest to place only a single PC Wingsecond based on our entries. For now, assume there is a second Wingsecond there--we'll run another contest down the road for the Seconds. Anyone who entered in this contest but didn't make it, or lost their role, are more than welcome to try out later for those last three spots!

Lastly, anyone who made a new character for this even but didn't get the position, feel free to quest for them as a Wingrider, or hold onto them for future events. :3 Just because they didn't get the title doesn't mean we didn't love them as characters. There were just a series of decisions we had to make, and as always, there will be more opportunities down the road.

heart

Congratulations to the winners, and thank y'all for making EoP so awesome!

P.S. Flightleaders will be A'dras & Gareth for High Reaches, and Z'haq & Eorawth for now. We may update/change that sometime in 2019 based on activity, since we announced them so late last year! x3
