Toward the end they did do a bit better, the last bit of yarn catching Shar on her straps and leg. Ugh...this better be easy to get out. At least they ended on a good note and she could still see.

I'lin's confidence in the drill wavered slightly as Pellereth tried to swerve out of the way of another tumbling clump of dyed yarn. The bronze shook his head as it wrapped around his headknobs. Pellereth's minor ruffled itch was cut off by the slow pit of dread as I'lin stared at the stain. Had that been actual thread...

The rising sense of anger and anxiety raced through their bond, and I'lin was taken aback by Pellereth's emotions. They had to do better for their family, for the Weyr. The hand on his neck felt so distant as Pellereth lamented the swipe of another piece of yarn fell against his hide.

It seemed to be going okay. They were doing great. Right? Only, now Moirath was sporting a necklace of fakeThread. You look silly, love. Moirath raised her head high. It is nice! Veltanna laughed. You really should shake it off. Like it is real Thread. Sigh. But. Pretty. Fine.

So distracted were the pair that they'd failed to see another dragon above them. As Pellereth twisted to dodge a collision, he smacked squarely into the yarn he'd just dodged.

The bronze let out a snarl of anger as the wet slide of soaked rope slipped down his tail and against his calf.

What a splendid game! Iweth quite preferred this to actual thread fighting (which was, of course, either the most terrifying or the most heroic thing ever, if anyone bothered to ask the bronze). His Theo was able to shed some of his raging fear when it was only stained rope, and while they both still wanted to do well (and flinched when they felt the brush of the stained ropes against the dragon's tail and calf), it was much easier to shake it off and get back into formation when no pain came with the blow.

Maybe it was because they were both keenly aware that the thread wasn't real that it became harder to focus, harder to push on... There was no real adrenaline to make Iweth ignore the urge to be distracted by the itching of the dye on his hide, though the sudden THWAP! of a 'clump' hitting his wing, at least briefly, brought the bronze back into focus. Though now he was going to be even itchier, and that was just the worst!

Another turn, and another splatter of dye over the bronze's tail—though perhaps, given they'd already been hit there once, no one would notice?

WHAM! Another hit, broadside and hard, sending a huge streak of dye splattering over both dragon and rider. Theo spluttered at the foul taste, paling beneath the stain of color as he realized a beat later that in actual combat that would have been a hit right to the face... not at all where anyone wanted to come into contact with thread, if it had to be done at all.

Iweth had turned his attention to his rider when the next gale hit, once more slinging them upwards, a thick splat of dyed rope bouncing off the bronze's other wing, leaving a bright red splotch across the membrane.

Another dragon soared above them, so close that Pellereth barked slightly, turning to avoid a collision or claws. But the clump of rope he'd just dodged splashed up into his wingsail, streaking a wide swath of color.

Another twist, attempting to get back into formation, and once more Iweth found himself with the feel of damp ropes tangling on his leg and tail. Why, he'd have nothing of those bits left at this rate! Of course, given this were actual threadfall...

The wet slap of the dyed rope has them both cringing, as Pellereth shook off the ropes across his chest, the frayed end sliding across his forearm in the process. Ugh.

Okay, for real now—it was only minor consolation to the pair that much of the dye on the bronze's leg and tail had begun to run together and overlap. But then... probably the weyrlingmasters would be able to tell, somehow, just how many times they'd been hit, even if to Theo it looked just like one big hit instead of several.
