Bast strolled back into the Residential District. This area of the Village had been one of the hardest hit by Choumei's rampage. At the same time, though, it was one of the areas evacuated earliest. As Bast peered through the wreckage, she found her eyes falling on more corpses than she cared for. Most of the buildings had been toppled by the battle with the bug, making this a task better suited for a team of professionals. The woman thought of this, but let the idea leave her as she kept track of the number of bodies she uncovered. This was going to be a long day, but it would help bring closure to many people. After surveying a block, she called Mononoke over. They would need body bags and tarps, as many as possible.
Mononoke ran off to fetch the requested supplies. Bast, meanwhile, was going to stay and start clearing the wreckage. She summoned a few of her golems and set them to work promptly.
"Maimakterion: squeeze through the rubble and see if you can find survivors. Start on the lowest layer and work your way up. Try not to put too much of your weight on the debris, as it's likely to be fragile."
"Princess: Clear away debris, starting at the outside and working your way in. If Maimakterion reports any survivors, enable their swift rescue. Avoid mangling bodies any more than they already are."
"Kanpai: clear the roads. We'll need the space. When Mononoke returns, work with her in setting up the tarps and body bags."
"Hoatzins: Carry corpses to the tarps and body bags. If a survivor is found, carry them gently to the hospital. Do not harm anyone more than they are already hurting."
Maimakterion flattened and branched out into several long, snakelike probes, each of which with an eye on the end. These probes were sent through the wreckage to scan for survivors, all the while remaining attached to the main body. Every few seconds, a probe would pull out of the wreckage, then enter it again from a different angle.
At the same time, the Princess was pulling away large sections of fallen buildings. With no clear place to put the edifices, the roads were rapidly getting filled with the debris. To ease this a bit, Bast set about cutting the cleared buildings into smaller chunks, which Kanpai gobbled up and moved elsewhere.
It was at about this time that Mononoke returned with the requested supplies, along with a pad of paper and a pen for Bast. The golems on standby went to work with laying out the tarps and body bags, and then with transporting the corpses. The only positive part of the experience came when they reached the basement level of the building, where they found more than a dozen people hiding with only minor injuries.
These people were brought out into one of the streets away from the rapidly lengthening line of corpses. There, Bast met with them and got a head count, along with some basic personal information from each of the survivors. Few as they were, this small group gave her hope that some of the other civilians had gotten to safe areas quick enough.
"I'm going to ask you all to head to the hospital, okay? Is there anyone here who cannot walk?" Bast asked, scanning the crowd. She nodded and wrote a note, which she handed to the clone of hers just now getting back from delivering the survivors in the library to the hospital.
"I want you all to grab the hand of the person to your right, and follow me!" the clone instructed. "Does anybody know a good song to sing while we walk? No? I'll start, then..."
The clone grabbed the hand of the person at the front of the chain of survivors, then began singing a kid's song from the area as it walked off toward the hospital. Bast watched them shamble slowly for a block, then headed back over to the rapidly growing collection of bodies. The day was still young.

"Kanpai! Clear out the rest of this stuff! We can't have debris all over the road!" Bast barked at her draconic golem, which waddled over to a mound of wood that the Princess had tossed aside and started munching slowly. After a few minutes of minimal progress, the woman gave it a separate order: "Go dump the debris out in the desert for now if you're full! We'll take care of it later! Just get it out of here!"
The dragon flapped its wings up to the rocky bluffs surrounding the Village, then landed. It searched for a clear spot in the middle of nowhere and then expelled the wood and stone in its gut as a projectile. Now much lighter, it glided back down to the work area and started eating the chunks of cleared buildings that the Princess threw onto the roads.
The street next to the first cleared building was lined with bodies variously mangled. The damages ranged from light--to the point where the woman almost did not believe the people were dead--to people whose bodies were wholly perforated by collapsed columns. It was time to go through and count the corpses again, so Bast walked through the lines of bodies with her breath mask on, pen and pad of paper in hand.
Maimakterion had been doing a splendid job. The transforming golem continued to probe the wreckage, and every few minutes would uncover someone still alive. The most common denominator among the survivors was their being in the basement of their building, but occasionally a few would come out of the upper stories. These people were always miraculously saved by a wall falling just right or some such nonsense, but usually were heavily injured regardless. So far, including the group from the library, the number of people saved totaled 52. The corpses kept piling up, though: that number of saved people was out of almost 200.
"Ma'am," an ANBU greeted her as he flitted out from between the buildings, "I'm here to relieve you. We'll be trying to identify the bodies soon. Please, go out and get some fresh air."
"Fine," Bast responded coolly after glaring at the ANBU for a few moments. "I'm going into the countryside to work for a while. Do your best while I'm gone, and don't dishonor the dead."
The woman called her golems over, then ordered Maimakterion to continue searching for survivors and to flag down an ANBU to get help recovering them. The blob rolled off in affirmation of its orders and resumed its work while the rest of them followed the woman toward the gates.
I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection.

Kaori strode into the destroyed residential district and looked around, tail twitching and ears laid back into her hair. All this destruction put a sour taste in her mouth. The cat-eared shinobi started to sort through rubble and debris, not caring if she got even more dirty. Her hair was already half grey from the dirt and dust that had collected in the free strands, since she hadn't bothered to put it up before starting on this journey. Kaori frowned as she seemed to find nothing but dead bodies. What a waste of life.

Knives wandered through the Residental area, clearing rubble from time to time as he passed it. 'Somehow, I'm glad you weren't out when this happened.. could have been a heck of a lot worse...'
'Oh.. but it is so good now.. and it's not even that bad...'
Knives just sighed as they walked past a few bodies, allowing the sand to cover a few of them and to most it would appear as if they were never there,
'There, are you happy now? You got your fill, let's not make a habit of this for much longer.'

Seeing all the bodies left him amiss for words. About a dozen casualties at least. Still somewhat confused on the connection between this man and Kaori he figured it best to ask something like that later. Just when he was wondering what they should do next he witnessed sand cover up the bodies. Was this an instant burial. More and more questions filled his mind but again he was at a loss as to what he should say. "Umm, Kaori? If there is nothing we can do here is there somewhere we should be?"

Kaori sighed and turned to look at Kaz, a grim look on her face,
"Unfortunately, there isn't anything w can do here until we're told to rebuild, which Suna can do mostly on it's own without her people's help. Let's head to the Kazekage's office, I'm sure Lady Ayame can fill us in, and give you a headband, newbie."
Kaori wasn't normally that straight forward, but she was severely irritated at the moment. She sighed and looked back at Kaz, as Nova turned to head for the office,"Sorry, that was uncalled for, you're not the one I'm upset with, after all. But we really should head for Lady Ayame's office, she can fill us in, and that's something I, personally, am in need of at the moment."
Kaori looked over at Knives and waved him over, ignoring what he did with the sand, knowing that it was something merely not talked about, and she would leave it that way, especially in front of someone who didn't know Knives."We're heading to talk to Lady Ayame, there's nothing we can do here."
Once that message was delivered, she turned on her heel and left for the Kazekage's office, ears and tail still twitching in slight irritation.

Following in behind Kaori, he was eager to get away from the grim sight they were currently at. "No offense taken, Pretty active lifestyle for an academy graduate I'd say. Be glade to get that headband after all!" Chasing after her as she quickly moved towards where he was originally supposed to go.
Entering the ruins of the area that was once the residential district, Hotaru would see ANBU about, helping with what they could. She stretched her arms a moment while she approached one that didn't look too busy. "Excuse me, I'm here to help rebuild. Could you use an extra hand?" Hotaru was very stressed out from the recent events, but still managed to put on a mellow face. After all, she needed to be strong for those who were not.

The ANBU looked up from a clipboard when addressed. After the question was asked, it took a split second to think silently, then gave its answer:
"There are a number of available jobs, and we would thank you for your help. We have the following jobs available..."

Bast approached the swarm of Hoatzins and Maimakterion, who had cleared the debris out of an area that used to be a vacant lot. The golems stepped aside at her beckoning, at which point she cleared the area of sand using Fuuton Ninjutsu, then created a few divots in the ground for the shrine's supports. When that was all done, she summoned the structure itself and made sure it was well anchored to the ground before sending a clone out to fetch the coffin with the Princess and Mononoke.

The Princess came tottering back with Mitamashiro's coffin in her arms. Bast quickly helped the golem slide the coffin into the shrine, then climbed inside and lifted it onto the pedestal at the far end. She then released the barrier around the coffin and etched a summoning seal inside it before closing it up again and placing another barrier, this one timed to fade away on a timescale of several years if she did not release it sooner.
With the shrine complete, Bast felt a weight lift from her shoulders. With the body in a more proper resting place, she felt ready to do other things until a better option presented itself. First off, she would have to return to the dig site and see if there were any other such rooms in the area. Her mind made up to do just that, she sent Maimakterion home and headed toward the Village entrance with the Hoatzins, Mononoke--freshly arrived after stowing the magatama necklace away--and the Princess, who would be coming along just for brute muscle.
Running in the door of his apartment he flung open the closit. Quickly throwing off his tanktop and slacks onto the ground. Leaving his dirty clothes on the ground he reached into the closet finding his dress clothes, let to him by his father that had passed away. Giving himself a quick glance in the mirror as he ran his hand through his hair running out the door with a half a** tie on.
"I'll do all of them." With a quick yet sincere smile, Hotaru would head towards a construction site for one of the buildings being rebuilt. Going through all of the tools, she would begin cleaning them all, sorting them out by size as she finished cleaning each one. She would also introduce herself to the workers there as they happened to pass by. [1/1 Reconstruction]
Once finished with the tools, she would then walk around the site, picking up trash and moving smaller chunks of building that were strewn about the area. On the large pieces, she would take her greathammer and a kunai, using them as a hammer and chisel to break apart the larger rocks. Once they were broken, she would then move the now smaller pieces to another area, out of the way of construction. [1/1 Site Maintenance]
Once she had the place cleaned up, she would find the area's water supply. A ravine, not too far from where a building had crumbled, had parts of said building stuck in it. Climbing down into the ravine, she would gather as much debris as she could and bring it topside before going down to bring more debris up again. Once she had gathered all the debris at the side of the ravine, she would bring it over to the area she had dropped off the rest of the debris from the site and left it there. [1/1 Clean the Water Supply]
Wiping the sweat from her brow she would say her goodbyes to the rest of the crew, then make her way over to the festivities.

A lone figure perched on the roof of one of the taller buildings in the Residential District, staring out over the city. It had come a long way since the devastating attack of Choumei, but there was still so much left to do. The people in these houses and streets, the workers in the stores, the chefs with their food carts, they were all good people. Every last one of them was good. Of that, the figure was certain.
"This city isn't evil," the figure growled. "Look at all those people. They work the day away, only to come home to their own fulfilling lives. All this comes together to knit the fabric of our community, but someone needs to protect that fabric... someone like me."
Spouting off brooding soliloquies about the inherent goodness of the community was all well and good, but ultimately the figure was there on business, and that business was justice. She pawed through one of the criminal files she had gotten from the police chief, then closed it in disgust. An underground gambling ring had popped up in this very neighborhood.
Without delay, Community-Minded Woman sprang into action, leaping from the building onto the street below! That was when a flickering light caught her eye: through a small window, she saw the flicker of a basement's lights and a haze of smoke. At first she thought there might be a fire, but then she saw the shuffling of casino chips and the flash of cards. She jotted down a few notes and slipped down an alleyway, reasonably confident she had found her mark.
Several hours later, after a good scolding about actually following through with leads, Community-Minded Woman returned to find a young man outside the building smoking a cigar. She asked him point-blank if he knew a good place to gamble illegally, he said yes, and was promptly arrested. Thereafter, she disappeared into the night, an agent of justice who was nothing more than a shadow.

Once more, the solitary figure of Community-Minded Woman perched atop an apartment building. Her brooding was eventually interrupted by the arrival of a fellow ANBU, who landed quietly next to her with a status report on the case of the underground gamblers. It seemed she had cracked the case for that specific building, but there were still signs that the underground gambling was alive and kicking.
Once more, she moved as if to leap out over the city dramatically, but this time she just took the fire escape down instead. There really was no excuse for jumping off of buildings like a crazy person when children were watching. She may have Douka to save her from splattering on the ground, but the youngsters didn't, and that could lead to some unfortunate copycats.
Once on the ground, the woman transformed herself into a younger version of herself with black hair instead of silver--truly a flawless disguise, if ever there was one--and started sniffing about the area using her keen nose for crime detection, one which surpassed perhaps even Ayame's own.
No, she corrected herself, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Besting Ayame's nose shan't happen in this world or the next.
After several hours of strolling and sleuthing, the woman spotted a poker chip in an alleyway. It looked new, but a small chip broken off on one side suggested it had already been used, and by someone who likely tapped it on the table a lot. The apartment buildings on either side of the alley were both newly finished, slightly more so than the rest of them in the area, so she started her investigation by walking through them under the pretense of looking through them as a potential tenant and a curious student of architecture. Nobody really seemed to mind in the first of the two buildings, but in the second one she met some resistance from a janitor when she tried to waltz right into the basement.
Eventually she backed off and decided to come at this from another angle: she slipped a summoning seal into the basement through a window and then reverse-summoned herself in. Once down there, she was thoroughly disappointed to find that it simply being used as a staging area for the cleaning services. Disappointed, she burned the summoning seal and walked out of the basement like a normal person, somehow managing to avoid detection better on the way out than she did going in.
The case was not yet cracked, but she still had a lead.
