Continuing the fight and even though the strain of everything was getting to the pair Taoloth saw another of his wingmate's in danger. He didn't hesitate to go towards them.

A large tangle of Thread hit the brown pair out of nowhere. Laying across Tahirah's chest and Taoloth's neck. The pair blinked between and returned but the strain of everything was beginning to show. They had to finish it though...they would finish it and push through.

Focusing on the fight again the strain and exhaustion made it hard. Tahirah was having a hard time seeing through the tears from the pain. Maybe she had pushed them too hard, they could have returned but...they hadn't thought to be damaged so badly...

A stray piece of Thread coiling around Taoloth's back left leg was the last piece. Pain seared through their link as they disappeared. It took way to long for the pair to reappear but when they did it was clear the pair was in trouble. Taoloth and Tahirah had both blacked out upon returning and they were plummeting towards the ground.

Caracath easily saw them and moved to catch them, easing them gently down upon the ground as the healers moved to begin their work.

The large man could hardly keep himself from trembling. A mix of nerves and excitement churning in his hairy chest. Loosing his fellows during between drills and training had brought the dangers of being a rider into sharper focus but this was still what S'mol felt he was born for, being a true hero. His knuckles had gone white around his riding straps but he sat straight and proud atop his bronze.

My dear S'mol your nerves are showing. Valseth warned him wryly. We have to be an example remember, if we are going to prove ourselves proper heros We have be an example. .

Aye, aye. Of course ya right. S'mol agreed taking a deep breath and making some attempt at centring his scattered thoughts and suppressed fears.
Valseth pulsed his warm approval through the link and hoped that he could be forgiven for manipulating his good natured rider just a bit. No one would be looking to them yet, they were just green horns testing their wings but it helped to infuse the large man's ego just a tad. When the signal sounded through the ranks Valseth rose in formation with the others and headed for thread.

The calm breathing and lasted only as long as it took Valseth to reach altitude where the silver threads were raining from the sky and the air was thick with smoke and ash from the belching of dragon flame. Only a few inches of skin was exposed thanks to his riding gear but he could steal feel that heat in sharp contrast to the chill air. He was panicking. A nausea that rose in his stomach and tightened his chest. This was the real thing? What if he couldn't do it? What is more people died because of his failure? He clung to the straps turning his head this way and that, his thundering heart seeming to catch and freeze with every new near miss he saw or damage inflicted.

Though S'mols mind whirled a calming dreamy voice cut through his mounting panic. "Easy S'mol. We have just started, you can't be giving up on me yet. I will not fall easily." He assured him even as he turned to flame a lump of silver thread from the sky with the elegant practiced movement he had perfected in drills.

'Get you head in the game boy'. S'mol scolded himself as he shook of some of the unwelcome and uncharacteristic jitters. But Valseth was still smiling. He could feel it. He still had trust in his rider. So S'mol settled in his determination to earn it.
"Valseth, there." He directed his dragon to a large clump of thread and a blue that was just turning into it at the mercy of a shifting wind. Without thought or hesitation the pair twisted to confront the silver menace before it could harm the blue, Valseth opened his jaws to flame it but it was to late and it caught them on the side. Training kicked in and they dived between and thus managed to avoid all but a light scoring along his shoulder.

Well that has been humiliating. Though they were doing well flaming down thread with Valseth's powerful flame the large man had clearly been slacking when it came to practising his firestone throws as he missed most of them with curses following him.

S'mol let out a small sigh of relief when the wingrider caught their last bag of firestone but the momentary distraction of self congratulations cost him. He barely registered Valseth's warning cry before the thread was on them. A Large clump had fallen through the cloud cover right ontop of them and S'mol could already feel it wriggling through his clothes and eating into his shoulder. Luckily Valseth was quick and with a clear command from S'mol them made the jump between. When they emerged the frozen thread flaked away and S'mol found (to his great relief) he still had full range of motion in his arm and shoulder with only minor pain.

The pair had fallen back into steady formation flaming thread within their wyrling ranks right up until they spotted another of their fellows being blow into a thread clump. With a silent agreement the pair drove at the hapless blue and caught him, pushing him away from the falling silver rain as they flamed it down. Some of the ash blew back at them since they were so close but it was a minor sacrifice.
