Physical Description: Oranie has the same black hair as her father and dark, deep brown eyes. She stands around 5’6”, and while her face is both pretty and sweet, she will never be a great beauty.
Personality: Once a bright-eyed and eager child, the realities of life have absolutely taken a toll upon Oranie. She was raised to be a perfect wife--quiet, capable, demure-- and to suddenly realize that everything she’d ever been taught didn’t seem to make one lick of difference…. Well, it was enough to make anyone jaded. She isn’t the sort of girl to let such negative feelings show, however, and can always be seen with a bright smile on her face and a cheerful word for everyone. Playing the role as big sister means she always needs to be calm and in control, and she doesn’t want anyone else to worry! In truth, a lot of her upbringing makes it so that she unconsciously dons a happy face without thinking twice about it. Her problems are her problems, and she certainly won’t drag anyone else down with her.
The truth is, everything that Oranie thought she knew seems to be a lie. She was supposed to grow up, know all the proper feminine skills that any good wife would know, and live happily ever after once she was married. When it didn’t happen, the young woman was left feeling adrift and uncertain. There’s no doubt that she’s a hasty young woman, and will agree to things without taking the time to consider the full consequences for her actions. It’s what landed her in marriage, after all, and just as quickly had her whisked off to High Reaches! Where patience and consideration would serve her well, Oranie is still young, and easily charmed by the thought of scenarios. Wait to actually get to know her fiance a little better? Nope, straight into marriage! Fully consider what it truly meant to be a dragonrider? Hello, it’s getting her out of this bad situation, it can’t be worse!
Though her roots have been shaken to their core, Oranie isn’t about to lay down and give up in despair. She’s quick to apply things she’s learned to the situation at hand, and by nature, she’s a person who would rather be moving and doing things instead of sitting still. This helps to be a natural distraction… but when there isn’t anything left to do, and Oranie is left on her own? She ends up thinking about her life, and what she’s even doing with it. It’s an understatement to say that she’s discouraged, and more than a little frightened to realize that her life has gone off the rails, and she has no idea what to do next.

History: Oranie is the oldest child of five, born to a Smith and his wife in a small cothold. Her extended family is large, encompassing grandparents, aunts, uncles, and many cousins. As with all women in the hold, Oranie was raised expecting to marry and raise children, while her brothers would be taught trades as was proper of the menfolk.
Her mother Orselie died during childbirth when Oranie was about 13, and within a Turn after that, her Aunt Nadry was Searched. Her grandmother, Malbrina, was open with her disapproval, and Oranie was old enough to make the correlation between her displeasure and the sudden lack of visits from her Uncle M’yk and his dragon. Not long after, her grandmother informed the family that Nadry had died, killed by a dragonet at her first Hatching. Oranie was secretly devastated, having been foolish enough to enviously imagine her aunt on a beautiful golden dragon flying high in the skies.... She kept quiet though and continued to work hard.
She and her younger sister Elibrie were thick as thieves, being so close in age, but Oranie was also beginning to help care for her younger siblings as well. Children of her own were to be expected, after all, and she took a vested interest in these particular lessons. Her life was soon to change for the better, or so she thought! The Healer of the cothold near theirs was looking for a wife, and Oranie was delighted when her grandmother informed her that she was to be married. She herself urged for the wedding to happen sooner than later, and though she would miss her family dearly, this was meant to be!
She was married shortly after her 17th Nameday, and all too quickly, Oranie’s thoughts of a perfect marriage and a perfect life came crashing down around her ears. Her new husband was a gruff, older man who had little patience for the young woman. He seemed to resent her actual presence, expecting her to be mostly silent and unseen… until it was time to come to his bed. She tried her best to do everything that was expected of her, but all of her attempts seemed to irritate her new husband more than anything.
Oranie found herself in a quiet state of shock and disbelief. This… was not the way she expected her life to be. She’d expected a comfortable home, a loving husband… but this? She had no idea what to do, and quickly found herself miserable. Thankfully, salvation came a few months later, when she was able to attend a winter Gather and finally see her family again. She’d just begun to talk with sweet Elibrie when the entirely unexpected happen. A rider approached them, declaring them fit for Candidacy…. A rider who just so happened to be a very pregnant Aunt Nadry. Delighted beyond words, Oranie eagerly accepted the offer, seeing it as the perfect escape from her marriage and the life she suddenly couldn’t understand.
Now that she’s at High Reaches, Oranie found herself experiencing anxiety and doubt about herself. Everything she’d learned and been taught… was it all for nothing? What was she to do now? But she refused to make Elibrie worry, and is determined to make the most of their new life at the Weyr.
