Age: 19 (3556.03.20)
Sex: Female
Sexual Orientation: who has time for that?
Craft: Wherhandling (former...very former)
Rank: Apprentice
Location: High Reaches Weyr
Physical Description:
5'4" and relatively slender, with pale skin, violet eyes, and black hair that falls to her waist. She is still a bit thin from her time in the mines, and sports scars here and there, but the only one that most people are likely to see runs on a thin diagonal across her face and narrowly misses her left eye.

Personality:
There are bad people in this world, and not nearly enough good ones willing or able to do something about it. Talis' worldview has very little room for gray areas, aside from the one she allows for people who are forced by those stronger or more powerful to do things they otherwise would not. People are good or bad, period, and the bad ones deserve to be punished. She's not content with expecting fate to take care of it eventually, just waiting around for them to 'get theirs': that mindset is infuriating to her, and only allows the unjust to continue doing as they will. People who have the means and ability to help but choose not to are complicit, and almost as reprehensible as the criminals they allow to exist.

Once she sets her mind to something - be it an ideal or a task - there is very little that can stop her. If she feels strongly about something, she commits herself without hesitation, sure in the moment that she is right; if she turns out to be wrong, however, she will not only admit it, but agonize over it. She obsesses over every mistake and failure, to a borderline-crippling degree if the impact is serious enough. Talis never, ever lets herself forget a failure, and will be quietly tortured by each one.

Outwardly, she tends to be calm and, assuming the company isn't disagreeable, polite and passingly friendly, with a healthy enough sense of humor (albeit leaning a bit dry or grim). Push her, however, and you'll find her to be rigidly planted, contrarily stubborn if someone with no right to tries to boss her, or takes the wrong tone with her. She has little tolerance for people who place themselves above others when they haven't earned or don't deserve it.

So long as it doesn't require a hard shift in her worldview and ideals, Talis adapts well to new environments and situations; she can find a way and a place for herself with relative ease, tolerant of any change that is neutral or for the better. If it's for the worse, she will still find a way to adjust and sustain herself, and if possible will do whatever she can to improve things. She observes carefully and learns quickly, especially physical skills, and is a natural hand with a blade. Has a soft spot for canines, but has never had one of her own.

Positive Trait List dedicated, just, adaptable/quick study
Negative Trait List overly hard on herself, prone to tunnel vision, struggles with moral gray areas (black-and-white worldview)
History:
Honest, fair, and hard-working, Talis would have thrived had she grown up somewhere like Tillek, but unfortunately for her, she was born to Nabol. Her mother made a decent living as a masseuse, while her father was an astronomer, which was certainly not the most practical or profitable of occupations; with just the one income to support all three of them, money was often uncomfortably tight, but for the most part they squeaked by. But Nabol was a dangerous place to live for anyone of low means, and when Talis was 14, her father was murdered - not for any reason anyone could discern, just because.

Previously, she had thought to take after her mother in craft (less because it was appealing to her and more because it was practical for their situation), but that night changed her mind. She decided that she wanted to protect people, to prevent such terrible things from ever happening in the first place. So she and her mother saved and scraped together everything they had, sold a number of her father's things, and paid for an apprenticeship into wherhandling, so that she might one day become a guard. At first, Talis was too focused on her goal and too blinded by her own idealism to see that the guards of Nabol, well...weren't exactly the sort who worried about preventing crime, unless the potential victims were favored and wealthy. She was a couple of turns into her apprenticeship, now old enough and with enough training to start going along on some assignments, by the time she really started to see things for what they were, and she was horrified. Not only by the way Nabol worked, but by how long it had taken her to see it. Her being a guard, whether she got a watchwher or not, wasn't going to help anyone who actually needed to be helped.

Upset with this reality and with herself, she decided to take matters into her own hands. She continued with her training, and on the surface did her best to seem unbothered by the workings of Nabol, but in her off time began sneaking off, hooded and face covered, to do what she had originally set out to do: help people. It was all relatively trivial stuff in the beginning, chasing down a thief here or scaring off a mugger there, but in time, what were little annoyances for those pulling the strings started to add up. Ignorant of this, however, she continued for the better part of a turn, becoming more ambitious as she went.

Over time, she became more than just a minor irritation, while also becoming a bit overconfident. A trap was set for her, she fell into it, and once caught, was sold into the mines. There she remained for a hard, bitter turn, often in trouble for willfulness and defiance, which sooner rather than later would have been the end of her, had she not been rescued by way of Search to High Reaches.

Blue Holleth

Origin of Name: The name Holleth comes from the Germanic Frau Holle, who is equated to the ancient Germanic Goddess Holda. The Goddess Holda held dominion over agriculture and women's crafts. She is seen as a parallel to Odin's wife Frigga. It is Frau Holle who, during the Winter Solstice, gifts industrious women with completion of their household tasks. If one's needlework is in order, and there might be one piece unfinished, it is said that Holle will finish it.

Inspiration: Let It Go - Frozen

Based on Hans Christian Anderson's The Snow Queen, Frozen features an iconic relationship between the sisters Elsa and Anna, who very little resemble the original tale. This brilliant twist, focusing on a sister bond, puts to paid the notion of women as villains, working against one another, and instead replaces such an image with a story of redemption and hope. A beloved classic, the Snow Queen nevertheless has several troubling elements, such as characterizing the villain as a seducer of men, and an enchantress without a heart of her own.

It is from this woman that Gerda, the heroine of our piece, must steal back her childhood sweetheart, Kai. While there are elements of empowerment without the tale, such as the robber girl and her assistance of Gerda in her journey, and Gerda's determination to rescue her friend at any cost, still the pitting of one woman against another to some leaves a bad taste in one's mouth. In Disney's Frozen, the villain is instead the scheming Hans, no doubt named for the story's creator.

For members of the LGBT community, Frozen's Let It Go is both a coming of age and a coming out anthem. Forced to literally hide herself from the world, shut away lest her deviant powers be put on display, Elsa represents to many the picture of a young queer girl, who is struggling with emotions that are too powerful to be contained. Let It Go has become a beloved cultural phenomenon, inspiring many covers, as well as an entire generation of young girls.

Personality: There is a core of cold strength within Holleth, but that core is shadowed by sorrow and self-loathing. He does not measure up to those of his siblings whose hides sparkle as his biological parents' do. There is an air of tragedy and remorse surrounding the Blue, who is so diligent that he presses much too hard, pushing past his own physical limitations. Growing up in the presence of one of Pern's most impressive Blues, Holleth has much to measure up to.

Although he may not be a Bronze, young Holleth is nevertheless imperial in his manner and carriage. One could never mistake him for anything less than the son of one of Faranth's own Queens. Although he puts on a brave face, there is conflict within his hearts. He wants nothing more than to be loved for who he is, and yet... who he is does not quite match up with who he should be. For, indeed, Holleth will never feel any urge to Chase after a Green as might be expected of him.

It is, rather, for the Chasers that he will yearn. However, such behavior would be, to Holleth, inappropriate. He knows that he ought to at least pretend at interest. And certainly, rising from the lineage that he does, one might well assume that he would give chase even to Queens. Yet this reticent Blue will do no such thing. He does not accept himself, pretending that everything is fine, and that he does not feel powerful emotions. Although defensive by nature, he will bottle every emotion up until they erupt into dangerous explosions of passion.

Since his esteemed company is not to be shared with others, who surely are on their own right paths, Holleth will turn any self-pity inward, ruminating with sorrow over his own lack. If only he could just be normal, perhaps he might not need to hide so. Those who manage to get through his frigid exterior will find within a warm and genuine individual, who gives his hearts fully when they are given at all. He has a great capacity to love, and although he fears it, he may one day benefit from a romance for which tales are made.

Positive Traits: Hard Working, Earnest, Regal
Negative Traits: Reclusive, Pent Up, Defensive

Adult Size: 46'
Physical Attributes: Lovely Holleth is fooling no one, although he certainly thinks that he is. There is a certain characteristic grace to the Blue's movements and visage, and at the smallest possible size for a Blue, he presents nothing so much as the image of delicate masculine beauty. He has wide wings which will readily catch the air, should he so desire.

Additional Notes: Although Holleth may suffer from crushes on his brothers, he will not give evidence of this. He has no desire to be seen as anything but a capable Blue, and such attachments will not serve him well. Anyone who wishes to get past Holleth's frosty exterior will have to try hard indeed. Once caught, however, his attention is likely to be held. There may be an OTP in store for this boy. Make no mistake - he will never Chase a Green or Gold, at least not to win.

Theme Song: Let It Go cover by Peter Hollins
Egg: This medium sized blue egg has bright blue stripes streaking over it. There's a restlessness about this egg, as if its contents want nothing more than to be free.

Why Me? Holleth and Talis have a lot in common. This is one pair who could benefit from each other's love. Holleth needs someone who can get past his icy shell, but at the same time who can empathize with his aloof and defensive nature. Talis is Holleth's hero, and he wants nothing more than to spend his days with her. They are equally hard on themselves, and could perhaps benefit from seeing the good in each other.

Impression

Quote:
Rhianth's bronze made his choice, and then, finally, the distressed little baby who'd been hiding with Kronoseth made its move...her move. It was a little Queen, a detail she noted with the same muted interest she'd have had if it had turned out to be brown, or green. There was no inherent covetousness that flared up on noting the sheen and color of the hatchling's hide - no disdain either, of course! - it was just another dragon looking to find Theirs, who was almost certainly not her. There were only so many dragonets, even with two large clutches, and the candidates far outnumbered them. Some of them were bound to be left standing, and Talis was enough of a realist to know and preemptively accept that she could well be one of them. And to know that she just wasn't a gold sort of person.

"There's one less to worry about," she observed with a nod as the gold found just who was their sort of person. "All metallics and greens so far...what are the blues and browns waiting for, I wonder?
"

Quote:
There was a gentle wiggle of the blue striped egg off to one side of Fianth's clutch. It wiggled once. Then twice.

Then, Let It Go stilled.

After a moment, a very gentle crack formed in the egg's surface.

Quote:
Crrrrrrrkkk---

The faint crack along Let It Go's surface split open and with all of the grace deserving of a fine metallic....a very blue dragon stepped delicately over the sides of his egg, spreading out his wings with a delicate flicker before pulling them back in.

Right on the tail end of some excitement, it seemed, but after glancing towards his parents, he held his head slightly higher, and slowly began to walk.

Quote:
The lanky boy was glad to see that the queen managed to find her chosen partner without issue, nodding with quiet satisfaction to himself. Soon, a blue delicately made his way into then, a red-eyed green. "There's our blue," He commented, noting that dark hide appreciatively. As for the green... well, he kept his thoughts calm. There was no need to assume she was going to do anything rash. Hopefully the other candidates would remember that as well.

Still, being light on his feet was never a bad idea. "I always wonder if they know something we don't," Lauthisen commented dryly. Perhaps the browns and (most) blues were waiting for something?

Quote:
Aha! There, as Lauthisen observed, was their blue. Talis did, perhaps, have a soft spot for that color, as the dragon who'd searched her had been blue, but in all fairness, that described a lot of searchdragons. Good chance no few of her fellow candidates had a similar view of the color, whether or not they wanted to Impress one.

"Oh, I'm sure they do," she agreed to his musings. All this time with no one but each other and their parents for company, nothing to do and nowhere to go? No doubt they knew each other very well by this point. "Plenty of time to plan." And snoop on said plans. And anticipate today.

Quote:
There seemed to be quite a bit going on, and Let It Go considered first what his cousins were up to, then his own green sister and her cries. Yellow whirled into the blue's eyes as he considered this action, before he looked back towards Fianth and Krahsujunth. He seemed to look at the older blue for longer than he should have before forcibly looking away and slowly beginning his approach towards the candidates.

Gentle steps. Careful steps. There would be no fumbling. There were eyes on the blue, after all.

Quote:
Let It Go didn't allow his graceful walk to falter even as more glimmering hides and bugles of challenge between his cousins drew attention away from him. He simply kept his head held high as he carefully stepped through the candidates, looking each of them over thoroughly before moving on.

He'd known where they were just a bit ago...where...?

Quote:
This was all very unbecoming, and blue Let It Go finally paused in his searching to take in the situation. If he had thoughts on the matter at hand, it wasn't clear where they lay. But after a moment, it was back to looking over each of the candidates and occasionally perking up in front of one.

Though whether it meant something, it was hard to tell as he continued on. This group of boys had yielded nothing, what if they were.....over with the girls?

Quote:
While he was careful to not nudge any candidates nor pull or step on any robes, there was a sort of urgency building in Let It Go who was walking a little bit faster - though never breaking that eloquent stride. Hurried, yes, frantic, no.

Quote:
When How Far I'll Go offered her support, Let It Go offered a soft kreel in reply before pausing in his pacing to look over the groups scattered here and there. But what he was looking for wasn't in a group, though they were very, very much not alone.

The blue approached Lauthisen and Talis' little group off towards the back, though they seemed distracted by the antics of his cousins. But he was right here, and.....and....The little blue straightened up and sat, reaching out one paw delicately to nudge one of Talis' hands.

MyTalis. I may not glitter like that bronze you look at, but...is your Holleth not exactly what you wanted? Another soft kreel, escaped the blue who looked up at the girl. Then, with a deep breath and a blink, his eyes filled with rainbows, flooding her with a love that was for her, and her only.

Quote:
There was a lot of activity to keep track of: particularly the budding creep-fest and conflict over in Rhianth's clutch, the group of eggs from which she'd felt similarities to a few. Not that that meant anything, of course, there were surely other candidates who felt that way, and it would be the hatchlings who ultimately knew what was best for them. But there was activity in Fianth's clutch as well, from Be Prepared who had turned its back on her at the Touching, to the green sweeping enthusiastically through the candidates' ranks, to the bronze looking out for his green sibling.

To the small, dark blue making his rounds at a measured pace, that in time brought him closer and closer to her and Lauthisen. She noticed him, of course, she knew well to stay aware of her surroundings regardless of where the primary drama seemed to be, but she simply assumed that he must want someone in the general vicinity...maybe even Lauthisen. For while she wanted a dragon, without a doubt, she had not allowed herself to yearn for one the way that so many did. So to see one coming close didn't cause hope to swell in her chest; there was only patient interest to see what it did.

And what he did was sit right before her and reach out a paw, which she reflexively turned her hand palm-up to catch like she would a canine offering such a gesture (not that there was any comparison, oh no!). And still she just stared, wondering in those seconds what in the world he was doing there, and what exactly she was supposed to do.

Until he spoke, and he was Hers, and she still didn't know what to do. Not with any of it. Not with his questions, not with the creeling, not with his rainbow eyes, not with the love - how long since she had felt a warmth anywhere even akin to that? How long since she had not just been alone? For she had accepted only the tiniest handful of others, and only safely at arm's-length, including the young man beside her. Acceptable, agreeable, worth spending time with...but.

Bonds did not come easily for Talis.

The rainbows were slowly edged from the blue's eyes with yellow, and he leaned more of his weight into her hand with a questioning look. Would even she not accept him? MyTalis?

Supporting the delicate weight he leaned on her with one hand, she brought the other up to cup his muzzle, brushing her thumb over the dark hide. That's not why I was looking at him, she finally answered. And he would know it to be the truth, because she let him in to see, as she bent to press the lightest of kisses against his forehead. A blue saved me once before. I would rather have a blue than anything. You're everything I could want, and more.

Relief permeated the dragonet, blue and purple flooding his eyes, and he breathed out all his tension in a sigh. Her stayed that way with her for a few moments longer before dropping all four feet back down into the sand, and fixed Lauthisen with an inscrutable look as His paused to offer, "Try not to get chewed on, no one'll want those robes secondhand."
