Soraru needed to take his mind off some things.
His little issue with the drunken Hono aside, he'd taken more alcohol than he should have and said far more than he ever should have. It was a stupid situation all around, and each little piece that came floating back to the front of his mind stabbed forcefully with embarrassment. Even after training for a while at the monastery he resided at, there was no way he could sleep with his wounded pride.
"What would Ooranu say?"
"What if someone else was around?"
"Why did I even take a sip of that stuff?"
Each one of those thoughts led to another toss and another turn in bed. All his years of maintaining a perfectly hidden identity could have fallen in an instant with just a slight change to that situation in the ramen shop. A familiar face and a drunken friend was all it took. It was unbearable for him to think about. The usually calm and collected swordsman wasn't going to stop beating himself up about it until something else could distract him.
Rather than sleep that night, he got his sword, hastily tossed on some equipment, and made his way to the Hokage's tower. The guards on duty for the facility were the same ones who let him in earlier that day, though it seemed like they were finally about to get off of their shifts. It made passing through as an armed shinobi without a village headband in the dead of night much easier, that was for certain. When he got to the office of the stand-in Kage, Soraru walked through the open door and took solace in the lack of people in the room. A one on one meeting was preferable.
After the buzz of an end-of-shift-rush for the office workers, the building grows quieter and quieter, falling into a gentle lull soon after. Shi remained in the Kage's office. Every few hours he would get up and stretch throughout the day, but his posture would grow softer and softer after midday, till it it would get to the point where Soraru would find him now; slumped back,elbow on an arm rest, covered cheek nuzzled on a fist while the other hand held a report that was propped up on a leg, lifted up on the other knee. He looked like he was in a lounge chair, just reading for the relaxation of it. The skin around Shi's eyes shifted but the Acting Hokage did not move at Soraru's arrival. He made a soothed noise. "Always and never. What do you need?" He inquires. The lack of urgency in the Kumo-nin's voice was preferable, especially at this time of night. but Shi knew that this was an hour of pondering. And not always the good type.

"A mission. One where I can get right into the action, and I don't mean just beating on some street thugs causing trouble. I want to help." He cut straight to the point, deciding not to beat around the bush. He doubted the Hokage wanted to dance around the topic either.
"If you have any ANBU or Oinin squads with a shortage of members or in need of auxiliary support, I want to lend my blade. I fought my way through a war. I'm capable." He made his intentions clear and hoped there wouldn't be any doubts in Shi's mind when it came to his competence. The possibility of acting as a key role in any ANBU unit would likely elude him, but Soraru believed there was still a chance to lend some sort of support. So long as it contributed positively to a mission that mattered in some way, it'd be enough. If it got his foot in the door to gain access to more ANBU ops in the future that was even better.
No surprise. This late at night, something was preventing the shinobi from sleeping and requesting a mission is a common-sought treatment. 'Action' is even more preferred than paperwork. Otherwise they'd just ask what needed to be done. Too tired to perform a mission but too troubled to sleep, they'd potter around, cleaning up the offices, organising files into the right spots, ready for the morning staff to pick up on. He quirked an eyebrow as Soraru went straight to the point of requesting an Anbu or Oinin mission specifically. At first, that was the only reaction he gave, looking as if he intended to just continue reading the file he was holding in his lap. A minute had nearly ticked by before he sighs and drops the paper onto his desk. The kid was serious about this...
"You're also not mine." He locked eyes with the Kumo-nin. Shi didn't explain further, didn't intend to. Leaning back in his chair, the Acting Hokage stretched his neck out to the left, then the right, his covered face remaining so thanks to the quality of his gear. Hands folded in his lap, Shi stared at Soraru, finger tips gently rubbing over his knuckles, eyes unblinking. Yet again, it was like Shi was just letting the time inch by, no showing any sign he was going to break the silence. The he trilled an accepting note. "Wait." Then he stood up in one smooth, easy motion and walked out of his office.
Time passed, the building remaining still and quiet, through the many minutes of solitude Soraru was asked to endure. Even with Shi's departure the floor remained desolate of any sounds of movement - and with his return.
"We're grabbing a drink." He announces from the doorway before leaving just as silently as he arrived. He was in no rush, his pace almost lazy, portraying an air of bone-deep exhaustion. Whatever questions or complaints, Shi didn't speak - just walked out onto the street and headed out to a rougher district of Konoha's bar scene.

Following an untroubled night and an energizing morning walk, Kagerou was humming a jolly tune as she navigated her way to the hokage's office. Today, as well, she wanted to focus on studying and working with Konoha's medical system, and though she could have probably done so by simply reporting to the hospital, she understood that she would need to bother the kage about the matter if she wanted the experience to also advance her skills as a shinobi. Don't ask her why. She didn't make the rules.
The door to the hokage's office was open, just as it had been last time. Kagerou took it as an invitation to simply step in, and no doubt the bells that rang on her wrist and the sea shanty she continued to hum were ample enough warning of her incoming presence. Nonetheless, she stopped just shy of appearing, knocked on the frame of the door, and gave it a couple seconds before poking her smiling face in. "Good morning, sir," she greeted, her head nodding slightly in a bow. The rest of her body walked itself into appearance and then into the office once she had checked that she wasn't interrupting anything. Not expecting to be remembered, the kunoichi promptly reintroduced herself and then cut to the chase, "I'm-" or she would have.
Instead, she stopped mid-sentence and tipped her head to the side, eyes unabashedly glued to and scrutinizing the narrow eyes of the ANBU. Her head tilted to the other side to make certain that the dark circles she saw were not merely an unflattering coincidence of light and shadow. Indeed, they weren't, and she bet that if she could get a closer look and pull down that mask, she would probably find more proof that this acting kage had not gotten much, if any, sleep last night. The mere thought of someone neglecting their health automatically triggered the desire to nag, a desire she had to repress. Her smile tightly held itself closed. After all, this was hardly the time, place, or person. Appearances must be maintained.
Though, her mind didn't count towards appearances, so of course it wandered. What was it her dad said that one time? "Ouch! WHY?!"? Okay, that he did say when he was thwacked over the head with a pipe for his lack of respect, but before that. "Sleeplessness is an occupational hazard of being kage"? Yes, that sounded right. Kagerou didn't believe him back then. Surely, with proper delegation and time management, a healthy lifestyle and sleeping schedule was possible even as kage. Jack was weird so she couldn't easily attribute anything he did to the norm. Inka was all too willing to sacrifice himself for the village, a trait that she found simultaneously admirable and greatly worrying, but it also gave him a personal reason, unrelated to the workload of the office, for not getting any sleep. She knew nothing about Shi, having only known about him since yesterday. However, as the saying goes, "once is chance, twice is coincidence, third time is a pattern." Perhaps her dad was right.
Then again, it had only been once so far she had caught Shi. Recollecting herself and rediscovering her voice, Kagerou resumed what she had to say, "I'm Kagerou, visiting from Kirigakure." Her tilted head straightened itself out and her smile relaxed as she spoke. "I was assigned to the academy's nurse's office yesterday, but today, I was wondering if there was any way I could work with Konoha's psychiatrists. I would love to learn from them if it is at all possible."

The graduation ceremony the day prior was... well, awkward, for a lack of a better word. The same children he spent most of his academy experience ignoring unless interaction was absolutely required had only grown a couple years older. As did he. Therefore, in his eyes, they were still children. Not that he had anything against those younger than him, but there was an obvious difference in interests, intellect, etc. that did little for recollecting past memories outside of lackluster experiences. Shusaku had no one to blame but himself; fully accepting this fact, yet harboring no emotions of regret or anger. The past no longer defined him, and his future had yet come to pass. He was focused on the here and now, which was meeting with the Hokage. It was not the first thing he'd consider doing after his usual morning routine, however keeping to the tradition of meetings such as this one were non-negotiable.
The soft echo of the Aburame's footsteps followed him through the stairway leading to the Hokage's door - ajar, with a woman standing between its frame. He only caught wind of part of her conversation, something about psychiatrists, before tuning out immediately. Whatever it was, was none of his business. Shusaku's attention fell to the floor, his body casually leaned against the wall furthest from the door, quietly awaiting his turn.
Shi was leaning back in the plush desk chair, elbows propped up on the arm rests, with one hand nestled comfortably i his lap and the other leaning against the edge of the desk to help hold up the paper. Dark green eyes looked up from the report at Kagerou's arrival - and stayed watching, unmoving as the young woman paused suddenly, her red gaze suddenly turning intense. The Acting Hokage slowly lifted both eyebrows, a silent 'you're staring at me.' Then she funnelled on, putting forward her request to change departments. A second passes and Shi trills a low note from the back of his throat. He looks down at the report once more, but he was no-longer reading the words. "The Academy had prepared a work roster for you. Go apologise to the staff and then head to the hospital. My notice to expect you should have arrived by that time." His voice is mellow, calm. But he did not look at Kagerou again. "Anything else." He inquires out of courtesy alone.

Again, the trilling sound as Shi thought. To Kagerou, it was quickly becoming a recognizable character trait of the acting hokage. Though, she still had yet to pin down what it signaled. Thought? Irritation? Minor disdain? Gauging by how Shi did not look at her again, she felt inclined to choose one of the latter two. Well, she could understand. A disrupted schedule and missing worker could only spell trouble, things she had wholly not considered. It appears she had gotten too comfortable and forgotten she was a guest in a foreign village.
Wishing to amend her mistake before it bore actual consequences, Kagerou quickly corrected her request, "Many thanks for accommodating me, sir. However, I did not wish to cause trouble to the academy staff. Instead of leaving my current job unattended, is it possible for me to take an extra shift at the Konoha hospital on top of my work at the academy?". She maintained her composure, including a comfortable smile and a steady gaze, but the ends of her ears had turned red with embarrassment at her shortsightedness.
Shi trilled another note, same as the last, and still did not look up to the Mist nin - but he did put down the report and pulled out a pad of paper, embossed with the official letter-head of the Hokage's office. Picking up a pen, Shi began writing. "The hospital has classes for shinobi wanting to specialise in different areas." He started explaining. "It may take longer to complete a course due to your current workload, but you wouldn't be the only one doing part-time study there." A few seconds later, Shi stamps the letter, signs his name, and looks up to Kagerou. "Take this to the schooling office in the hospital. They'll sort out a training program for you." And he holds out the letter.

Between the mask and the avoidance of eye contact, Shi was a difficult read for the yet growing kunoichi. Even his mood was a mystery, and she swore that trying to figure out what the trilling meant would be the death of her. Well, perhaps the next time she'll have better luck. For now, she had received what she came here for, and even the unexpected dilemma had been solved. There was no reason not to smile happily. Taking the letter from Shi, Kagerou bowed to the acting Hokage. "Again, thank you. I'll work my hardest," she bid a brief farewell, aware of the other shinobi waiting just outside, "I'll report to my post at the academy now." With a last nod, she tucked the letter in her bag and then turned to leave, motions accompanied by the ever present ringing. Passing by the other masked shinobi that had been waiting for her, Kagerou smiled and nodded, quietly amused by the coincidence of brown hair, dark eyes, and masked face. She wondered, even while knowing it was highly unlikely, if perhaps they were somehow related.
Shi trilled a flat note as though acknowledging what the red-eyed kunoichi was saying. But otherwise didn't react. He waited for Kagerou to have fully left the office before calling in the individual that had arrived earlier. "Enter."

Moments of silence passed before the woman made her exit out of the office. Her shadow caught within his peripherals, he looked up in time to witness her quiet greeting, which was returned in kind with nod. Only upon the command of the voice inside the office did he move, leaving his place on the wall to accompany them. Shusaku's gaze fell solely on the figure sitting in the Kage's seat; their attire somewhat... unexpected of an individual carrying the title of the village's leader. "Greetings..." Not having much in the way of words, he fell silent from there. He was under the impression that the acting Kage already knew why he was here.
Shi watched as the Mist-nin left his office, only to be replaced with someone else. "Hm." He thrummed, eyes turning to the pile of academy graduate files at his elbow. "I've seen you..." He murmurs. "Ah." The acting kage pulls out a file and opens it, placing it down on the report he had been reading earlier.
There was a small, square photo of Shusaku's face paper-clipped to the front of it. "You've shown to be a rather quiet but determined individual... of the Aburame clan..." Shi reads a little slowly, his fingers trailing underneath the words he's apparently reading. "And a note of preference for hand-to-hand combat..." Although the acting Kage was speaking aloud, his low tone implied the verbal commentary was more directed to himself, reinforcing the points of interest he was coming across. "Apart from entering the Academy late there is nothing overly note-worthy in your profile, meaning you should be fine in a properly balanced team." Shi speaks, voice low and level. Eventually, the acting Kage looks up to the individual he had just been reading about, his face completely impassive.
"Do you have any preferences of placement? Shusaku Aburame."

Shusaku remained silent as the acting Hokage went over his file, reading aloud to himself. The Aburame's stance only shifted slightly during the process, having taken a note of Shi's slow reading. Only after he finished did his attention return to Shusaku, inquiring about any preferences for placement. A balanced team wouldn't hurt. Shu had his sights on joining the Oinin, but the road ahead would be long before that was close to achievable. He was in no rush to get there, but if there were any methods to streamline the process, then he wouldn't object either. His research for new breeds of insects and further fortifying his own hive still had priority over any current or future ambitions.
Shi blinked at the outright answer he received from the Aburame. He was impressed by the forthright response and trilled a note in contemplation, leaning back in his chair as he did so. "Interesting choice." He verbally acknowledges. "You should take advantage of all resources available to you, then. The foreign nin currently residing here may have some combat styles that would agree with you or at least be good to gain experience training against. The Mizukage is offering personal training sessions currently. Or you could check the mission board and chain something available at your experience level. Teams will be formed shortly, so take advantage of you're current free time." As he some, Shi also reached down into a box set by his feet and pulled out a freshly minted headband, and holds it out to Shusaku.
