"You're welcome" Maria said, slowly stroking his hair as she held him, rocking him back and forth as she comforted him.

Whenever Maria stroked his hair, it just felt really good to Darius. He closed his eyes, Maria's soft and gentle hands rocking and comforting feeling amazing. He looked so cute and calm in her arms.

Maria watched Darius, relieved to see him calm down.

Darius did not want to go the school today. He was scared, nervous of what Jackie was going to do when they were in class. Ignore him, try to get a different partner? He even thought about eating alone so she could let Jackie eat with Maria instead. He wanted her to still like him, still want to be with him, not be upset at what he mistakingly said. He was in his art class, looking down at the floor as he waited for class to start. Jackie wasn't there yet.

Maria went to class as usual, paying attention to the teacher while taking notes. She half dreaded lunch again, and she dreaded the breaks. She couldn't stop hearing what people were saying about her, and she found it annoying.

Jackie didn't show up at school. The desk was empty and it didn't seem as if she would be coming in. She was skipping.

Jackie wasn't there, Darius feeling both relived but also upset because of it. It was his fault she was skipping, or that's what he felt. During the day he barely spoke and slowly did his work, really wishing he could go out and smoke right about now. It was time for lunch, Darius sitting in their usual spot as he waited for Maria to get there. He wasn't that hungry, not feeling like eating because of the feeling of self-blame.

Maria got her food and went over to Darius, and seeing his expression, she frowned. "What's wrong?" She asked, wondering if things had gotten worse between him and Jackie.

Darius looked up to see Maria, simply sighing and looking back down at his uneaten food. "She didn't even show up today... She's avoiding me..." He mutter, only loud enough for Maria to hear.

"She probably feels bad and doesn't know how to apologies. If you want, we can stop by her place after school." Maria suggested.

"I bet she wouldn't even open the door..." He muttered, moving around his food with a fork. "I just want to tell her that I like her and want to go out with her, but because of what I said yesterday, she'd probably laugh in my face or something like that..."

"I doubt she would laugh in your face." Maria replied. "Besides, you'll never know until you try."

"I guess I don't have anything to lose... except for Jackie as a friend or girlfriend..." He said with a sigh, the bell ringing to go to class. He had a headache and felt sick, but shrugged it off, slowly getting up. "I'll meet you at the car after school." He said to her, walking off to class, feeling his stomach starting to turn a little.

"See you after school." She told him before heading back to class herself. Mentally, she told herself this was too stressful to begin a school year.
