((Haha! That was actually the next OOC joke I was going to make. xd Except, after the scream of denial, I think Eva is more likely to ask, "Wait...you're a robot... HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?!" And Genesis would wink, "I have my ways. wink " ))

Genesis carefully turned toward the group, keeping its arm around Eva's shoulders. It focused on Scarlet's question first, "I recognized your energy, your presence." It replied, then visibly thought, "I actually don't know how I can detect such things... my brethren seem oblivious to them. I just feel energy, much like how human skin feels the wind."
The Caretaker then looked up to Isabella and Lukas, nodded, "I have been given that identity, yes. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." It cocked its head as Lukas spoke in the unrecognized language. No search results could identify the nationality directly, but a few linguistic roots appeared. Genesis glanced back to Eva, whose crying had almost completely halted, "Might I ask why you've come? Not that I am displeased; far from it. However...it is dangerous to intrude upon this facility. I suggest we start moving soon, for security has no doubt been notified. I would also like to show you something, Eva."

Hmm. Isabella and Lukas looked to eachother.

Odessa didn't seem bothered by the Caretaker. Lead the way, Genesis.

I then piped up again. I think it's best for Eva to tell you why we've came. But, speaking of Chris, we think we saw his people on the way here. Perhaps once we are done here we can escort him back to his people?

Odessa nodded in agreement.

The robot had started to lead them off down a hallway, Eva kept up pace beside it. Her eyes strayed to its face several times, a look of wonder in her expression. The silence carried on for a while, with nothing but the quiet mechanical whir of the Caretaker's movements and the others' footsteps. Genesis watched her as she finally spoke up, "I...we came for some answers." She declared with rawness in her voice, "I can't keep living in ignorance. I can't keep living without even knowing myself."
"I figured that much," Genesis said flatly, "It's only natural to want the truth, after all you've been through lately. I can see and hear your misery, and the only thing that's strange to me is how you've managed to endure it all." Its eyes held true sympathy as it spoke, until the robot focused on the path ahead, "Don't worry, Eva. I'll tell you everything you need to know."
They turned down another hall, then took a shortcut through an unused lab. The walkways were almost scarily devoid of occupants. Genesis stopped at a door, typed out the entry code, then stepped inside. It gestured for the others to follow.
The lab was vast, with full countertops, gargantuan computer screens, and ten of those suspended-animation tubes (all empty). Jars containing lumps of skin and bone and eyeballs aligned the furthest counter, bringing to mind a number of horror films from years past. Genesis stopped at the very center of the lab, ahead of everyone else, looking from face to face for reactions. Especially Eva.
"Welcome to your birthplace." It said with what sounded almost like sarcasm, "Lovely, isn't it? Certainly not your cliche hospital room, with all the tired doctors and grey walls and screaming mothers."
Eva tensed at the last word. She struggled on her own words a bit, "U-um... You are m-my...mother... right?"
Genesis smiled, "Yes, Eva. Though I cannot be certain on my exact parental role, since I don't have a definite gender. I tend to envision myself as male, however..."
She grinned at that statement. The robot headed over to a monitor and turned it on, revealing a wall of constantly-scrolling green numbers. The digits appeared in fits, occasionally speeding up or slowing down, but never stopped. Genesis waited for her to watch it a moment before speaking, "As you likely know by now, you aren't entirely human. You were originally written as an AI, a computer program. I created not only your body, but the basis for your personality and ability to evolve." It paused and pointed up to the screen, "That code up there? That's you, Eva. That's the computerized half of your mind, the AI. See how it's speeding up right now? It's your thinking that's causing it. It's recording every thought, every emotion, every sight, taste, sensation and sound you experience in logical numbers. The code itself is simply too massive for any computer to store permanently, so it deletes lines just as soon as it writes new ones. Your true 'code' is in your physical brain, where you can access every file in a format not of digits, but of human senses."

Wow. I said as we reached the lab. No one seemed to be perturbed by the sights within the lab.

Lukas was studying the equipment thoroughly, from the floating eyeballs to the computers to the screens to the suspended animation tubes. He had thought about taking some of the technology for medical purposes back at home, but he had thought it would be from corrupt government officials... not this fascinating caretaker. He doubted he could now, and not because the caretaker might try and stop him. This caretaker was a good person, he could tell... he couldn't take from such a person.

How does this all work...? He asked, half to himself. Isabella peered at the hardware, trying to identify how it worked.

I was looking at the screen with the numbers, watching it constantly evolve. Wow.

Odessa hand wandered over too and was looking at a jar full of liquid. It had an eyeball in it. She then looked up and headed over to the screens to look at the coding.

The coding is done very skillfully. It's impossible to tell that there's an AI at all. She said with a smile.

Genesis gazed in Lukas's direction, "The physical construction of a human body is probably the most time-consuming aspect... We use nanomachines to alter the structure of atoms into elements, which can then be stitched together into complex cell networks. Depending on the pattern I instruct the nanos to use, they will make different networks — skin patches, veins, organs, nerves, bones. After the initial shells are crafted, they proceed to make the lining of organs like the stomach. I begin assembling the structure once all the components are finished, and they fixate the pieces by sewing flesh around them. Blood and other fluids are made through rapid replication of a pre-existing cell."
"The brain is the last part created. The nanomachines craft the physical organ, but an AI code is carefully inserted through laser graphing. A human brain is no different from a disk in that aspect, because we've found a way to read and write information from or into one; the laser basically carves that data into the flesh, and the cells retain memory of the light's content. Once the coding is finished, it is written into the brain, and I complete the body's construction. The heart is started with electricity, the lungs start to function, blood is pumped externally until the heart can take over..."
The robot looked back to Odessa and nodded, "That's because of the double-write... Eva basically possesses two separate-but-connected minds. One is the AI, the logical sequencing of numbers which a computer can recognize as images, sounds, colors, motions, tastes and smells. The second is her 'self', which at the coding level is nothing more than a single command to evolve. The Self is what experiences the world around it, and learns from observation. Her personality has developed from the Self."

Eva watched the digits scroll as she listened, how they sped up exponentially when she tried to imagine this whole process in her head. This was the monitor she'd remembered from long ago, the one behind the faceless robot. She got up onto the empty lab table and lay down flat on her back, angled her head limply to the right, "This is it... I recognize this place from an image in my head. Except Genesis looked different, and he was hovering over me. It's the same."

Lukas looked to Genesis and he put his hand to his chin and thought about that. He wondered if such things were safe to use for his own people...

Isabella continued to poke around the stasis chamber.

Odessa nodded and clapped. Well done.

I started to wander about the lab, observing everything. By now I had taken off my helmet. When Eva laid down on the table I wandered over to her and looked down at her. Unintentionally I had gone into the very spot that Genesis had once occupied as a faceless robot...

Chris paced around the room with impatience, "How long has it been? Seems like forever, sheesh... You think he got caught by the officials?" He asked Nova casually, then resumed pacing. There was a sudden pop! that resounded throughout the room, followed by a hiss. He stumbled back toward the robot, away from the doorway. Silence resumed, "What was that?" He whispered.
The crackle of high voltage electricity rippled across the walls, sending every hair on the boy's body standing upright. If either of them touched those walls, they would be fried in an instant...

• • •

If a robot could blush, Genesis would have. It waved dismissively at Odessa's applause, "The credit should be given to my creators... they are the ones who gave me the ability to make life." It looked down to the floor as something flashed across its internal radar, then glanced back up in time to hear the crackle. The monitor shut itself off as a safety precaution, while the walls around it hummed with electricity, "Stay away from the walls!" Genesis warned, the robot itself backing away from the nearest, "The security system has been activated — this whole facility is a high voltage death trap. Even materials such as your armor will fail to block all of it... The others are probably on their way."
The Caretaker's eyes were angled forward, though it was clear the robot wasn't seeing the scene ahead of it. Genesis expanded its sensors' range, trying to locate any signs of life or movement in the halls beyond...

Eva got off the table carefully, moved further into the room's center. Even from such distance, she could feel the static dancing across her skin. The lights flickered above their heads, until darkness swallowed the lab. Only Genesis's eyes cast off a slight glow. She didn't like this, not a single bit... they were trapped. Trapped like mice in a cage.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 02, 2011 4:47 pm
((... MWAHAHAHAHAAHA! You do remember that we can see energy, yes? What is electricity? ENERGY! BWAHAHAHAHA!))

Nova stood in the center of the room, looking around. She stood stationary, the cloak draping over most of her body. She looked at the wall which now rippled with electricity.

Something tells me... it's not good.

She looked about, as she contacted Genesis. What's going on?

~~~
When the electricity started up, all four of us cried out in surprise and... sheer annoyance as the mild buzzing in our heads suddenly was turned times 10. We looked about, the electricity in the walls dancing in our eyes.
OY! And I thought the interference from the monitor was bad!
You do realize that our armor has a quarter inch outer electric resistance ceramic shell... It's as good as wearing a suit made of 2 inch rubber.
Pretty electricity... I had approached one wall and stood a few feet away. I had found the main conduit-- I watched electricity flow through the conduit through the walls...
Scarlet... You're the one with the secondary air path... And you like to hang out with Gerald...
Oh! Yeah! This is a lab, isn't it? We can make a Tesla coil or a coil gun, and if we can redirect the electricity from the room's main conduit back into it we can short it out, and the walls won't be electrified. Let'see if I can remember how to do that.
Remember guys, the law of grounding! Bleedin electricity isn't gonna stop us!
I retreated towards the rooms center, and settled down there.
First I need a good pipe, a transformer, some copper wire... IR LEDs, Photodiles, something to use as projectiles, caps, something to use as a trigger and case...
I started speaking very quickly, asking for some parts here, parts there. Even in the dark my family searched the room easily, moving around counters without bumping into anything. I set up shot in the middle of the room as they found pits and pieces of things here, things there... They brought it back to me and I started to build.
Security has been activated. Don't be surprised if other Caretakers or humans start arriving soon. Genesis responded to Nova, then watched as the family cooperated to make the coil. It frowned in frustration, unable to detect any other life outside. Even Nova and Chris had been invisible to its radar, and it knew where they were based on Nova's wireless transmission...
"One of my systems is malfunctioning... I'll go keep a lookout." It informed the others, then focused on the lab's doorway. The locking mechanism hesitated a moment, then released with the robot's signal, the door sliding automatically into the electrified wall. Genesis navigated carefully through, out into the hallway. Eva followed after it.
She stopped abruptly, the Caretaker directly ahead of her... along with others. The door slid shut behind her. They were surrounded by easily thirty robots, along with numerous human guards interspersed. All had varying weapons pointed at the rogue machine and its creation, except for three figures. In the exact middle stood two unique robots similar to Genesis, one on either side of Raowan. Eva gasped.
"Do not fear, Eva. They cannot harm you." Genesis reassured her, its glare fixated on the taller of the two fembots.
She followed its gaze to the enemy robots. The first was closer to child size in proportion, had neon purple hair, pointy ear units and large armored hands. It wore minimal body armor, and had the name Metamorphosis written neatly on its forehead. The second was slightly taller than Raowan and had an obviously female figure, with long white hair and brilliant blue eyes. This one was clad in a skin-tight black exoskeleton and thigh high boots, and had Nemesis written on its forehead. Eva shuddered at the sight of Nemesis, and noticed the smirk crawl across the fembot's face.
"Genesis... please step aside." Raowan instructed coolly, his confident voice masking the nervousness he felt. When Genesis refused to budge, Nemesis stepped forward.
"You have committed treason by harboring intruders and destroying another unit. Resistance shall only ensure your termination, Genesis." Nemesis's deep yet feminine voice warned, "Do as the Administrator instructs, and you will only undergo minor testing and alteration."
Soon the coil was complete.
From inside the room where was a very loud, very startling
ZZZAAAAAPPPPP, and the sound of a explosion. The door opened after Genesis and Eva, and out we strode, trooping casually. We all wore our helmets, the Coil gun that I held in my hand was almost as long as I was tall. It looked frankenstine-esque, with electric arcs leaping from the walls to it, and to a needle in my other hand, which then arced to the gun.
It seems we have overstayed our welcome. My father spoke with his full deep voice. It showed his power in his voice. The alien feeling most people felt around him and most Northwest people grew, until we were surrounded in a aura that said Don't mess with us. Thank you Genesis. He turned to the Caretaker and bowed to him, palm over fist.
I looked to Eva.
You have your answers, Eva? We all good to go? I asked her gently.
The others had their eyes on the enemies before and around us. Odessa yawned, as if not impressed. {Too bad we don't want to hurt Genesis...} She said in our ancient language. {We could get the bots down with simple neutral soul energy.} Their hands were casually on their weapons... giving the impression that they didn't want to draw them. Odessa had the robotic arm still slung over her shoulder.
{And Eva forgot her helmet... our paths of motion would make these robots explode.}
{I don't think Genesis would let us hurt any of the humans.}
{We don't need to hurt them... we just need to get past them and back up to the surface. A few bumps won't hurt them too much.}
((Note how they said bumps, not 'bumps and bruises?' If you're give a path of motion push, and you leave a bruise, you're doing it wrong.))
~~~

Nova gulped and gestured to Chris. She held out her arm, signaling for him to come to her to hide.

"Then my termination is imminent either way." Genesis stated, disregarding the others who just entered, "For to alter my existence is to kill my spirit."
Nemesis chuckled, "Exactly why a machine must not possess a spirit to begin with. It gets in the way of the machine's purpose, its requirement to obey."
"Obey? You mean to blindly follow a selfish man's orders, no matter the cost of human life involved." It countered, something near anger in the robot's tone, "If any of us have lost sight of our original purpose, that would be you. We were created to protect human life, to nurture and guard those out in the fields. And here you would sacrifice needlessly... for what? Some computer terminal? Five men given the title 'Administrator' simply because they purchased their rights to bear such?"
The two fell silent, locked in a battle of glares. Metamorphosis examined the other four humans, gathering as much data as she could. She sent the information to Nemesis, then focused on Eva. That woman was unprotected, and was the AI...
"Administrator Raowan... please evacuate." Metamorphosis spoke to the man, her voice sounded high and childlike, "Now bypassing level six safeguard..."
Her eyes glowed a deep red, and the innumerable Caretakers shifted uncomfortably around the circle. The human soldiers secured their biohazard masks. Raowan nodded in confirmation, then turned to leave. Security doors slammed shut tightly behind him.

Eva watched as the guardian left, and felt sick with disgust. He was a coward, a liar. He didn't care about her welfare. She was just an object to him, a tool. She heard Scarlet's question and shook her head, "I can't just leave Genesis — he's my father. I don't care that he's not human... he's still real." She said firmly, never once turning to look at the girl.

Nemesis overheard Eva's statement and broke out into heartless laughter, "Hear that, Genesis? The AI loves you. You're its precious daddy~" The fembot taunted, flashes of the robot's previous personality lit those unholy eyes, "I'm terribly sorry dear, but your daddy is a bad man and will soon face his demise."
She shifted her stance slightly as panels opened down her sides, a thick vapor quickly filled the air. Meta also released the toxin from her body. The other machines gave off a hideous high-pitched noise, one that could easily shatter a person's eardrums. Eva fell on her knees, hands clamped over bleeding ears, coughing uncontrollably. Nemesis smirked, and adapted her right arm into a wicked gun which pulsated with energy.

Genesis knew the true urgency of this situation, and wanted so badly to help Eva to safety... but if he turned his back even one second, Nemesis would terminate him. Bypassing safeguard level five... success. Level six... success. Level seven... success. He created a canon in one hand, and a blade on the other. Genesis fired his gun twice at Nemesis, then launched himself toward her with the blade lunged forward. Nemesis had blasted her weapon once, the laser colliding with the ceiling and causing debris to fall. The other machines and people all attacked at once, a volley of bullets and blades and lasers filling the hallway. Meta, amidst all the chaos, had grabbed Eva and bounded off...

I watched Meta grab Eva as my family flowed to meet the battle. No one seemed affected by the toxin, or the awful noise, though every single Nortwestener was aware of blood starting to trickle from their ears...

I must remember to get that treated... I thought as I sent off several shots using the Coil gun into several of the screeching machine's heads.

Each shot went straight through a robot's head, exploding it. I started forward, pulling my hammer off of my back to continued shooting as I smashed and battled my way through the chaos.

{I'm going after Metamorphosis and Eva!}

{Right! Stay in mental contact!}

I fought, smashed and shot my way through the din until I reached the other side. Blood and mechanical pieces stuck to my hammer as I seemed to vanish from sight.

I was moving faster then the normal human eye could see. I followed my instincts as I followed a trail of energy that I had come to associate with Eva... My face went blank as I ran, and the look in my eyes was cold. I ran silently through the hallways... no longer the lively girl with the laid back nature. The Scarlet that was slipping through the hallways now was a predator.

~~~
Lukas and the remaining three others fought behind Genesis, backing up the robot as he battled his sibling. Each were aware of the other, each connected, each helping out each other and Genesis when needed.
Then, something happaned. A caretaker had somehow shuck up behind Odessa. He raised his electrified blade to strike her in the back of her neck when...
Lukas saw.
He dropped his maul and charged the Caretaker, bellowing like a bull. Odessa jumped out of the way and he descended and hit the Caretaker faster then the eye can see.
The Caretaker exploded into a cloud of dust and shrapnel. Lukas continued on the fight, lashing out with his bare hands so quickly only a Northwestener could see it. Humans went flying, their ribcages crushed and stricken with paralysis (if not dead). Caretakers exploded. Lazers bounced off of him, the pain only fueling his fury more... He was a terror to see, on any side...
((And this is what happens when a Northwestener loses control everyone! Things explode!
Lukas: LEAVE MY DAUGHTER ALONE, b***h!))
The halls whooshed by impossibly fast, the overhead lights and ceiling panels mere blurs. She was near deaf, and the blood dried sticky against her skin. The coughing had ceased, but the pathogen hung heavy in her lungs like cement. Any attempt Eva made to free herself was quickly overcome by the robot's ungodly strength.
Meta was practically in warp, reaching speeds of over 100 mph. The robot carried Eva at her side, arm clamped tightly around the woman's waist. She bounced through the halls, legs colliding with walls and doorways as she propelled herself forward ever faster. The Caretaker's free arm shifted several times, first into a launching device which planted bombs behind them, and then into a blade which she dragged across the ceiling's fault line, causing the portion behind them to collapse.
Genesis and Nemesis were equally matched, their blades meeting every time. He would slash, she would dodge and kick up at him, he would grab her by the ankle and throw her... only to be dragged along. They were polar opposites — the Creator and the Destroyer, yet in combat were exactly the same. The two automatons spun and lashed and tumbled, a vortex of activity and lifelong conflict. Nemesis collided with the heavy double doors, Genesis descended upon her like a hawk and punched the door out from behind her. The fembot faltered, and corrected herself through a series of rapid backflips until she landed upright. Both robots stood still, watching each opponent as such was seen in old western films.
Bypassing safeguard level eight... success.
Nemesis's blade faded, nanomachines rising from slots in her arm, solidifying into the government's most lethal mobile weapon. A nuclear weapon. The gun's core illuminated with sickly green light, the most impure energy to have ever existed on this planet. Genesis's expression was nothing but pure shock, "They said only one existed... You cannot use that here, Nemesis! You will destroy not only I, but yourself!"
She cackled; a laugh that should have only been uttered by the devil himself, "Don't you see!? None of this even matters anymore! This is the clash of good and evil, of nature and machines, of the beginning and the end! The genesis was the start, and the nemesis was the end!"
He launched himself at the insane robot, a futile last attempt to disarm her...
She aimed away from her sibling, pulled the trigger...
The ball of volatile green energy flared outward, a supernova of flame and force, collided with the lab door Genesis had come from. The shockwaves sent every body flying, dead or alive, mechanical or not. Sparks flew, walls caved, chemical energy licked at and burned anything in its path...
The two Caretakers burst backward, Genesis grabbed ahold of Nemesis's gun...and crushed it. He stood up again, and ran frantically to the battlefield. They couldn't die... not all of them... he wouldn't live with the guilt...
In a world that never understands you...
"((Also, a completely random fact: About a week after I created the character Genesis, our local grocery store replaced its self-checkout machines. The new ones have the label "U-Scan Genesis." rofl Apparently, real-life Genesis is starting out as a checkout robot. LOL )) "
...the machines will always understand your pain.
