It seems, hanging out in Towns2 is not very popular, though.
I got the impression Gaia is more of a forum based platform,
than a virtual world-ish thing. Probably it used to be different
with zOMG, but I wouldn't know, I missed out on that one.

Yes, you pegged it it. Gaia is forum based, zOMG was fun but plagued with problems.
