Personality_______________________Fairweather grew up sheltered, knowing little of the outside world. Unfortunately (or as most would say, fortunately) for him, he was never able to fully accept the teachings of his family, and the bitterness that grew inside him at the idea of following them into an unnecessarily short life never really went away, even after he escaped. It's hard for Fairweather to comprehend just yet that life is not quite so bad on the outside, and that there are many different belief systems, so he tends to simply assume that everyone is as narrow-minded and foolish as the herd he was born into.
As part of their ritualistic culture, Fairweather was taught how to heal from a young age using his abilities as a unicorn, and has since become rather adept. However, he tends to find healing a useless endeavor––everyone will die eventually, anyway. Oftentimes it seems that despite running away from his past, he can't quite find a way to run away from his pessimism.
Since being brought into the Flock by his preferred mistress, Suria, he's started to grow and open up a little, at least. The culture works for him in two very important ways. It provides a sense of structure, something he was used to and something he lost after leaving his old life behind. And secondly, a high value is put on everyone's lives, be they female or male. Fairweather could never understand how his birth family could treat life so thoughtlessly under the guise of protection and growth. Finally finding others who seek to truly protect has helped him start to trust again.
Yet, having become a father, he's only found something new to question himself about. Fairweather considers himself a poor excuse for a father, and so tends to avoid his now grown sons as much as possible. Though it is the way of the Flock, he feels he should have had at least some part in the raising of his children. He would never speak out in such a way, but not being able to form a lasting bond is something he regrets.
History___________________________It was a dark forest full of dark trees and dark characters hiding under the guise of light. At the middle stood a tree, taller and stronger than any else in the wood. It was under this tree that Fairweather, and the rest of his herd brethren, were born. This tree, according to the family's ancient myth, held the soul of Ba'Aal-Erion. He was known as the god of weather and growth, the only deity believed in and worshiped by the herd.
Legend said that once, long ago, Ba'Aal-Erion took soquili form and graced the family with his presence. He stayed with them and grew older, and with each year that passed his horn grew longer and more curved until eventually it pierced the back of his skull, killing his mortal form slowly. The herd spent many days in mourning as Ba'Aal-Erion laid at the base of the great tree and died, his blood seeping into the soil. It is said that on the day he passed, his form appeared to a young filly and told her that his spirit now resided in the tree and that he would remain among them in this form to be sure that all soquili lived no longer than he had. To do so would mean their souls would die and never find peace in the next realm.
And so, a tradition was born.
It was decided no horse would live longer than Ba'Aal-Erion had when he took mortal form. Those years had been short, far shorter than the lifespan of the average soquili. And to be sure that no one died earlier, if at all possible, members of the herd were all forced to learn healing as quickly and efficiently as they could. Training was an everyday occurrence, even up to the day a soquili died. Once a member of the heard reached Ba'Aal-Erion's mortal age, they would be taken to the base of the tree and ritually scarified in a way similar to how the god's horn was said to pierce the back of his skull.
While all of this was done under the assumption that an early death meant immortal life in the next realm, Fairweather, despite being raised under the teachings, saw it as a sham. The idea of being forced into such a ritual sickened him and made him foul tempered and bitter. He took part in none of the other herd celebrations and was called an outcast by many. However, he would die just like they all would, and be accepted into the next realm, thanks to Ba'Aal-Erion's endless wisdom and patience.
He wouldn't let this happen. When Fairweather was old enough to be on his own, he made the life altering decision to slip away in the night and never look back. After spending a short time on his own, he was found by Suria and brought back with her to the Flock, under mild threat, but largely unchallenged. There he's lived comfortably since.
