Removing his sunglasses, Pullo began to speak.

"Yes. Soundwaves were made, although no auditory receptors of any kind received them. It still makes a noise because soundwaves were produced, which is the basic definition of sound."

He then turned and walked away, hoping he looked really damn cool.

We don't know if sound waves were actually produced.
We weren't there to hear it.
The only reason YOU think it made a sound is because you are using scientific logic, logic that we have ALREADY proven. But what of the logic we haven't proven, there is a whole lot about the human body that we have yet to explain. This is why some people hear different things than say, the person standing next to them. For all we know, it could have made no sound at all. What if sound is a state of mind. And Deaf people have reached the nirvana of this state of mind and are now BEYOND hearing, not lacking it? Think about it.

"I don't understand the whole 'logic we haven't proven' thing. All logic has been proven; thus, it is logical. It is true that we could be entirely wrong about all this, but, as you said before, it's already been proven. The only way to advance our knowledge as human beings is to use logic to our advantage. If something has been proven, it is true, unless proven otherwise. Furthermore, sound waves are always produced when trees fall, because this has been proven. The impact disrupts air molecules, producing sound waves. (Actually, I'm not sure if that's how sound works, but that's not the point. The point is that soundwaves are produced when trees fall, and, therefore, the tree 'makes a sound.')"

Yes, it makes a sound. Even if there is no one there to witness or hear it, it still happens.

Really, it's like saying, If you're in a dark room and there is no one to hear you're screams for help, are you still screaming?

No you're not.
There's a knife in your chest.
You're not screaming, you're dead.

Good point.

But the fact that you think it will always make a sound shows far too much that you can only think inside the box. What if, just for some strange reason, There was a giant bed of pillows where the tree landed? so many, in fact that the tree made no sound. A pillow truck crashed nearby and the driver died, his truck knocked over the tree and the tree landed on all the spilled pillows.

Would it then make a sound?

Of course it would!! A truckload of pillows will not completely muffle a giant tree falling over! If the truck knocked over the tree, that means it would fall in the opposite direction and probably wouldn't hit any of the pillows anyway.

Not necessarily, if you've ever watched ax-men, or even seen a commercial for the show, you'd know that sometime trees don't fall the way you want to. And this is a "what if" scenario. Assuming that there were enough pillows to muffle the sound of the tree completely. The point is that it's possible.

Lets test it
Cut down a tree and prop it up with something, plant c4 on that something, then video tape the explosion that you detonate and are too far away to hear. Get the video camera and replay this and see if it magically doesn't make a sound just because no one can hear it. -.-

define sound:
1. something audible: something that can be heard
"not a sound in the whole house"
"the sound of gunfire"
2. vibrations sensed by ear: vibrations traveling through air, water, or some other medium, especially those within the range of frequencies that can be perceived by the human ear. At sea level and freezing point, the speed of sound through the air is 1,220 km (760 mi) per hour.
3. implication: an impression of somebody or something formed from limited but significant information, especially information lately received
"From the sound of it she's finally found a job she really likes."
4. earshot: the distance or area within which something can be heard

ok well this is what i got i think it does because look at number 3.

no if the tree was cut perfectly flat and was sitting on the stump and the truck(with a bed[in case you don't know the bed of a truck is where the materials go{not saying anyone here is dumb}] the exact height of the cut on the stump) was reversing fast enough the tre might fall into the bed effectively showing that your post is wrong... but that is a really low prob thing.
