I like them both.
I know it's sitting on the fence, but I really do like them both for different reasons. Actually, I like Matt as well.
I like Mello because he has that fire in his personality: he doesn't back down and he goes for what he wants, fighting tooth and nail when he has to. I can also relate to him: he always feels second to Near, always has to prove himself twice over. I have two sisters that sometimes makes me feel invisible when all three of us are in the same room together.
On the other hand, I like Near for his cold demeanor - he doesn't let anything bother him, he always looks at problems with a calculating eye. He is always calm, cool and collected compared to Mello's hot-blooded nature. I can also relate to him: he doesn't let anyone too close to him, he likes his own personal space. I don't like people invading my personal space.
Tbh, it's summed up in the manga: on their own, they can't even reach L's level - together, they can be amazing. They can even surpass him. In a way, I think the term "soulmates" applies to them and I don't mean in the romantic, til-death-do-us-part-and-even-after, lover soulmates. I mean soulmate as in that one other person who - regardless of whether you love or hate them - can, essentially, complete you. The one who can challenge you, compete with you: the one who makes you work harder to meet them head on. They make each other stronger by competing, and they make each other better by trying to be better than the other. That's the power they have over each other, this indestructable compulsion that drives them both apart and together at the same time. I like them both, because you have to look at them both together and apart to see the full picture: you can't have one without the other, regardless of who you like better.
