Vanilla eXee What have you been using to clean it with in terms of scrubbing (like sponge, paper towel, etc.)? You may need something a bit stronger. You can also use a razor to scratch stuff of that won't come. That's generally what we use for hard algae. You can get packs of razorblades fairly cheap at the hardware store, just be VERY CAREFUL. They are sharp, and you can hurt yourself.lol, thanks for the warning, I have trriieedd, bleach and CLR and windex with a scrub brush, rag, paper towels...My dad has some tools for scraping paint that might work. I will still need to paint the black trim black again. When that's all said and done, it still has some scratches on the glass and obviously no filter. Ssooo, I was considering giving it away and getting a tank (that I only found now AFTER buying this one) of equal dimensions but has a hood and filter at $40. I imagine a filter alone would cost close to that, might as well get a nice tank while i'm at it. The filter LOOKS like an aquaclear but I asked and am waiting for a response.

Ya sorry, that was my other option. Keeping it as a hospital tank. But I was wondering if it might be too big for that. I mean if there's an illness, don't you usually want a low water level and warm water. Without a second heater it wouldn't be much of a hospital tank. Plus a friend of mine has her turtle in my old 5-10G (was told it was 10 but I think it was a 5) so, depending on if she has the room, and doesn't think it's too ugly, it would be great if she was willing to upgrade.

You could trade her the new tank for your old one. 5-10g is usually good for a hospital/quarantine tank. Right now you're probably not going to need it, but in the future if you want to add new fish after your tank is already established, it'll be best to quarantine them first. Just look for a cheap heater somewhere. It's always good to have an extra tank on hand, for so many reasons. Besides QT, you also never know if something will happen and your tank will break. Maybe someone accidentally smashes it, or a truck goes by and it cracks. Whatever the reason, better to be prepared.

mkay, the filter IS aquaclear, so yay. But, with the lid it's 15inches high. Would the filter fit if I took the lid off? I might talk to my dad about modyfying my desk a bit. Maybe drop the desk 1.5inches and raise the bookshelf 1.5 inches. So I could actually fit the whole aquarium in

K, so my dad is being SUPER vague about this. I asked him if he could modify the desk and bookshelf. He just said "anything is possible" for fourty bucks, I need a lil more than "possible" ya know. At first he said dropping the desk 3 inches would look silly cause the desk would be much too low. I thought about it and agreed, so suggested just doing about 1.5-2 inches and then raising the bookshelf about the same amount. Well suddenly he thought it was better to just drop the desk.
I just wish he would be upfront, like if he doesn't have time or just can't be bothered then SAY so. Kill my dreams of a fish tank now instead of me stressing out and trying to figure something out.

K, screw my dad lol, I'm getting the tank. Worst case I won't use the lid. The tank will have only natural lighting lol. But I will beg him to modify the desk, maybe as a bday gift. I need a filter ANYWAY, I'm sure an aquaclear would cost about that so, might as well get a better tank with it. I'm gona get rid of the other tank though, it's too big to have as a spare, I'll see if anyone will trade or maybe I can sell it, use that money to pick up a lil something.

So the latest update is this. A friend of mine may be trading me her 5G for this 15G. (She has a turtle so, without being imposing onto her, it would be a great upgrade for her critter)
On Saturday I'm getting the nicer 15G (he said he use to use it as a spare for babies and doesn't need it anymore) with the aquaclear for $40.
I will then leave the tank on the floor while I start looking for substrate and shopping for plants. My mom is going to talk to my dad and explain how important it is to me to have a 15G so I might have the fish I have researched and want. She said if he knew how much I want it, he'll make the time to make the adjustments to my desk. Because at the moment, his attitude is kind of like, just wait till you find a tank that fits or get a smaller tank and I explained that tanks are pretty standard. That I wouldn't find one the same width but shorter. And if I go smaller, I can't have the fish that I decided on.

That's awesome Gabby. I hope he'll do it. He should take a moment to realize what a great daughter he has and how you deserve it. Not only do you go to school, but you work, you do sports, you take care of all of your own animals and you don't get one unless you do it right. That right there deserves a desk adjustment.

Not only do you go to school, but you work, you do sports, you take care of all of your own animals and you don't get one unless you do it right. That right there deserves a desk adjustment.LMAO, I think it was more like...he ALREADY gave up half a day to modify my bookcase, which was made specifically to fit the slanted ceiling in my old room and have a a perfectly sized cubby/whole to fit my lil TV. Been living here for 3yrs now. At least. Never even plugged in that lil TV when we moved cause I inherited the old family room TV once we got a new big screen. Plus the only spot my custom desk fit, well I can't SEE the lil TV from my bed, so it's been an empty whole for 3yrs. Looking kinda retarded, with the uneven top that use to go all the way to the slanted ceiling. ANYWAY. He finally got to talking about fixing my room. We decided to cut the bookcase and mount it to the wall. The second it went up I said to him all that extra space I had now would look GREAT with a fish tank. Not knowing the size of a tank, he just drilled the bookcase to the wall, and adjusted my ribbons so they'd be higher and then covered all the old nail holes with plaster and paint. SO all that to say I think he thought his work was done and is annoyed at having to redo some things. But I think realizing how much I want this, and thinking of it more like a bday gift will change his mind. I think ONCE I have the tank, he will realize I'm serious about this PLUS it will be easier to know for sure what the new measurements will be. And they're getting a bigger TV supposedly which means I'll inherit THEIR flat screen. Gosh it's gonna be hard to move out now that my room is gonna be all finished and gorgeous.

you guys are gona lloovvee this. So dad agrees to make adjustments to the desk. First I need to empty out drawers and such and we remove the cabinets to get cut. One of which the ratties love to hide behind/ under. Well don't I find a whole pile of lab blocks rolleyes The whole process took maybe an hour. But it's all done and looks fantastic. Forgive messyness of my desk, still putting everything back The view from where I usually sit at my comp. DA TANK!
