The monster boil was not pleased to be looking at what he was. Up in the mirror glowing blues narrowed, disgusted in more than one way. White scars crossed his tanned skin, marking up the length of both entire forearms. Nurse Cricket had done her best when another student had apparently pulled him to her office from the Haunted House. It made him sick that he was so weak to have fainted from the pain and shock.
But...
It wasn't so much the memory of how they had gotten there that bothered Zaire, not it was that he wasn't able to at least bring the other fighter down to his level. To bring him the pain he had caused him, to know that the man had been punished for simply attacking before knowing what was happening. A cowardly move for someone so strong. It turned his stomach that the man probably didn't even hold a scar from his attacks. It made him question himself in all the worst ways.
Weak. Lazy. The words echoed in his head, reminding him of Helki and everything he had done wrong in his life up until then. Zaire leaned over the sink in the bathroom of his dorm, trying to fight back the emotion that was choosing now of all times to boil over. Why, after all that had happened that week was it now, now that he was alone? Vulnerable.
A fist found its way into his mirror, shattering it and bringing a steady trail of crimson from newly sliced knuckles.
The broken shards reflected back up to Zaire, showing him the image of a broken monster, a sight that only made sore eyes that much more tired. He was ready to change, had tired so hard, thought he had been on a good route too but now. Now he was questioning it all, all the getting up early the going to classes with Jory. The battles that had only made him a tenth of how strong he needed to be to face what he had met in the Haunted House. Jory, Helki, all of it.
What was it all for if not to make him stronger, better.
Zaire's eyes slowly opened, a silent question of why falling from parted lips. Should he be asking instead that? Why had he done hat he did for no gain, or what had he done wrong since it hadn't seemed to better him at all. But just as these thoughts stirred Zaire's mind started to help him from the hole he had begun to create.
He had become strong, strong enough to win nearly all the spars he had taken part in. Strong enough to let Helki down and pick up a boilfriend that seemed to like him as an equal and not as something he could better. Strength of mind in that he not only went to do what was needed for him to graduate but he was actually doing fairly decent. He had been getting A's and that was something wasn't it? Blue eyes searched the shattered pieces of the mirror and slowly dripping fingers started to arrange them into a new one.
Not a whole mirror but it was getting hole, just like him one, piece at a time.
- Later That Evening -
Zaire sat at his desk, a pen held in bandaged fingers slowly scrawling words onto a paper addressed to his father. He missed home, his family and was now literate enough to let them know in more ways than a simple premade greeting card. Zaire smiled as he wrote of his feelings, those towards his new and old boilfriend (an attempt to reach his mother for help in understanding them.) He smiled when telling his father of the classes he had taken and of the creeple he had met while taking them. Once done the letter was placed into a crumpled envelope and seal with wax from a nearby candle. Placed in the pocket of his jacket Zaire stretched, eyes landing on Grey.
The mini had been watching him since it had smelt the blood from his fingers earlier, "are you worried..?" He cooed sweetly for once towards the mini. It's head craned and paws tapped at his pillow much like they did when it wanted him to lay down, if only so it could lay on top of him and sleep. A half smile and Zaire trailed towards the bed, sitting then laying down on a yawn. "Come here you pest..." The growl was low, sweet almost as his arms wrapped around Grey and pulled the mini to his chest for a cuddle.
A happily little chirp came and as they lay Grey began to attack the bottom of the bandage connected to Zaire's hand, please his master was 'ok' and now cuddling him, even if the monster would from time to time lick him as if about ready to swallow him whole.
