User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Name: Set'al
Age: 36 (3539.03.06)
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Weyr: Western Weyr
Rider Rank: Wingrider
Previous Rank/Craft: Trader
Physical Description:
Tall and lean, a good portion of Set'al's height of 6'3" is leg, making him well-suited, physically at least, to taking after his mother's side of the family and being a Runner. He has straight, medium-brown hair that just brushes his shoulders but is usually tied back, expressive green eyes and a hawkish nose, and all things considered is a handsome fellow.

Personality:
Again taking more after the Runner side of his family than the Trader side, Set'al is as trustworthy as they come. He would never have even thought of reading someone's message, much less not delivering it at all - not only would there have been serious consequences, it's just plain wrong. The only lies he ever tells are white (ask him if your hair looks okay, and the answer will always be yes), and he wants nothing whatsoever to do with getting in trouble. The truth is, though, he doesn't always stay out of it. He has a little bit of a problem in that he's not very good at keeping track of time, and is easily distracted - a bad combination for a Runner! He doesn't mean to get sidetracked, he really doesn't, it's just so hard to say no sometimes, whether it's to himself or to someone else. An hour or two can't hurt, surely... Set'al just cannot resist stopping to smell the flowers, as it were.

He's an easygoing, good-natured guy with a healthy sense of humor and an awareness of his own flaws (it's hard not to, with a dragon who constantly reminds him!) and an ability to make fun of himself. He'll never try to get himself out of trouble by making up excuses; oh, he'll give you a reason, but it will be the completely honest reason he was late or didn't get something done, and he will genuinely feel bad about it. It won't necessarily stop it from happening again, although with Pipith to keep him on track it's not quite as much of a problem as it used to be.

He works hard at the things he needs to work hard at, and will put everything into whatever task he's been assigned to make sure that it's done and done properly, particularly when it comes to the deadly serious matter of fighting Thread and drilling to be prepared, but he doesn't seek out extra work for himself. Sometimes his dragon will push him into it, but one thing Pipith has yet to succeed at shoving him into is a leadership role. Set'al is a chronic underachiever and happy to stay that way, and wants nothing to do with the responsibility of leadership. Could he? Sure. Does he want to? No, never, absolutely not. Where Pipith sees glory and power, Set'al sees people's lives depending on them, and that thought terrifies him.

Positive Trait List honest, laidback, good-humored
Negative Trait List underachiever, easily distracted, allergic to responsibility

History:
The second child of a Runner mother and a Trader father with a long-distance, on-again off-again relationship, Sethal grew up never staying in one place for too long, and exposed to the wide variety of people and places of Pern. Most of his time was spent with his father and the caravan, but as he got older and it became more and more obvious that he had the physical makings of a good Runner, his mother insisted that he apprentice into the craft. The easygoing boy had no objections, and seemed to take to it fairly well. He was honest, most importantly, and willing to work hard to please his mother, but as he got old enough to make runs by himself, problems began to manifest. Due to his easily-sidetracked nature, he was very often late; he didn't mean to be, really, it just happened! Someone along the way needed his help with something, or there was a baker with delicious-smelling treats, or the girl selling flowers was pretty and flirted with him so he would buy one, or the person he delivered to invited him in for dinner...the excuses were endless. Nothing urgent or time-sensitive could ever be given to him, and by the time he reached his early 20s and still hadn't made it to Journeyman, it was painfully obvious that he never would, so back to the Trader side of the family he went.

He did feel genuinely bad for disappointing his mother, but in all honesty, he was much happier as a Trader, and relieved that she'd finally given up on him. A couple of turns later, during a stop at Southern Weyr to trade and rest for a few days, it just so happened that the eggs on the Sands happened to start hatching while they were there. Never one to miss a good show, Sethal went to watch, and got a lot more than he bargained for when an angry little hatchling climbed into the Stands - grabbing a woman by the arm and throwing her aside for being in his way - and demanded to know why he wasn't down on the Sands with the other boys.

Being attached to a competitive, rank-obsessed bronze dragon was a rude awakening for Set'al (much to Pipith's annoyance at the time, he refused to drastically change his name and dropped only one letter), who did not appreciate being ousted first thing in the morning every morning and volunteered for any and all lessons, demonstrations, tasks, chores, etc. Working hard was one thing, but this? This was ridiculous. Early on, not sure what else to do, he allowed himself to be pushed and pulled around, but after the first few months, he'd had enough, and finally started putting his foot down and refusing to let his dragon overwork them both. Pipith was startled and offended at first, and especially cranky for several weeks, but by the end of their Weyrlinghood had built a solid foundation of compromise and affectionate bickering that worked for them both.

One thing that helped soothe Pipith immensely was Set'al's friendship with Narisa, rider of his gold clutchmate Cepheith. From the beginning, the bronze had been inclined to buddy up with the young Queen, and did everything he could to nudge his rider - sometimes literally - into doing the same with Hers. Set'al was reluctant mostly on principal, and concerned about how it would come across, that she or others might suspect an ulterior motive (because while he might not have one, his dragon certainly did). Being that they were both Weyrlings, it wasn't as though he could avoid her entirely, and she was actually really nice. Sooner rather than later, they went from fellow Weyrlings to friends, to good friends, and Set'al stopped caring if anyone suspected anything.

They made it through Weyrlinghood and became wingriders, and with Pipith already beginning to make plots and plans about how quickly they could became wingleaders and then more, Set'al started getting a little antsy. He'd already been in one place much longer than he ever had been before, and now his dragon was talking about serious responsibility? Then Cepheith had her maiden Flight, and Pipith won, and he slept with his best friend who he maybe liked more than just as a friend, and suddenly everything was awkward (mostly because he made it that way by overthinking everything) and he became incredibly claustrophobic and just...couldn't handle it. After many heated arguments with each other, Set'al for once got his way, and he and Pipith left to join up with the Traders.

Even here there was some compromise, because they did agree that they would come back to Southern to trade and visit their friends/more than friends/why does everything have to be so shaffing complicated? Over time, Pipith did settle into their life remarkably well - travelling Pern did have its upsides, like meeting and chasing even more greens and golds, and being frequently admired and fawned over by people, some who had never seen a dragon at all before, let alone a bronze, and so as far as they were concerned he was an enormous, glorious specimen! But then Thread returned, and the pair agreed that they had a duty to return to the Weyr. When they went to Southern, however, Narisa and Cepheith were gone, have transferred to Western, and so Set'al and Pipith followed.

Age: 11 (3563.01.11 Banshidheth x Fjorith)
Color: Bronze
Size: 72'
Physical Description:
Tiny for a bronze, what Pipith lacks in feet from nose to tail, he makes up for in bulk, as though someone scaled down his overall length but forgot to do the same with his build and wingspan. He's a powerhouse of muscle and quite something in the air, but ungainly at best on the ground. A classically elegant dragon he is not.

Personality:
The first thing that you need to know about Pipith is that he's tough, tougher than any bronze in this whole Weyr and you better not forget it. Best described as having tiny dog syndrome, his size is something that will bother him for his entire life. He will always be on the smaller side of the scale, just about small enough to be considered a brown from afar.

Because he could not influence how large he grew – though not for lack of trying (Set'al had to make sure he didn’t overeat early on in life) – he does his best to influence everything else he can get his claws into. A highly competitive individual, he almost needs to be the best just to convince himself that he's good enough to be a bronze. During Weyrling lessons he was always the first to volunteer, even if he didn't have the slightest clue what is going on. He wants first dibs on meat, has to be the first one up in the morning, and the first one in the lake even if he has to get up before the suns rise. How far he takes his obsession with being the best will depend on the hand of his rider. Should he have let his bronze get away with it, Set'al would have quickly found that Pipith would rule their relationship as he saw fit, but fortunately for both of them, Set'al has no problems pushing back when he needs to.

With Set'al to temper him and focus his energies on something more constructive, Pipith is on his way to becoming a strong, well-rounded dragon. Their relationship can sometimes be a friendly tug-of-war between their respective desires, though less so than it once was. As hard as he is on both his rider and himself, Set'al understands that for the most part Pipith is all bark and no bite, and needs his rider to be both his confidant and his support, especially in times of trial. This bronze does not take losing well.
