Some quiet was welcome after their close scare. Martirae even dared look from the sky above for a moment to run her hand near, but never over, that raw spot. A first, fresh marking for a lifetime of them to come. She wanted to be mad about it - how dare her beloved be hurt so because of Thread? How dare the others she cared for be hurt? But her anger simmered out to something much softer than she was used to: a gratitude that Anakumath was and would be fine - and hopefully they'd all stay so.

It was just quiet enough that she allowed the distraction to linger a little longer than she'd meant for it to. Trying to soothe away that soreness, the pain that she could feel in the flesh of Hers while the going was still good. It would be pointless to worry every time, but this was the first time. She'd fuss for the first time, at least.

It had continued to be quiet down below, where something wasn't happening every moment, every second. Martirae didn't like it much - but she knew it wouldn't always be so easy. The thought had barely caught her when pain jerked her out of it. Anakumath barely kept from crying out as Martirae sent them both away again, fighting off the urge to feel disappointed in herself. She wouldn't allow self-pity now. She would do better.

Because this time, it had been her fault, and she could be mad about that.

Venandith, you do our entire clutch proud with your heroic ways~ Anakumath bid, watching those who flew above with great interest - and much more attentiveness now that pain was being muted by a sheer feeling of anger from Marty - though it was aimed at the same thing that drew the ire of all.

She could have said many nice things about all of them, but he'd been so very kind in watching out for their dear Moirath - sweet and special as she was - and that went far for her.

Uta
Enjoy your +3 HP. Even if you decide to apply it at hour 3 for the sake of timeline lmao.

You're doing great and feeling good! Though you wind up with a few small ashburns, and you're still feeling a little anxious, nothing has gone horribly wrong. When Thread gets close, you make your move and flame it away. When you're tapped to deliver firestone, you do so with no trouble. This isn't so bad... Not at all! You're feeling good, and that's what matters. You and your dragon surely are naturals, baby! Good job! You're certain the Weyrlingmaster's have noticed your natural skill.

Today was the day. The day they joined the fight. All their work and worries had led to this, and now that the day was here, Theo felt about like he was going to throw up. The rose-colored glasses he'd worn since the day Iweth had come for him had cracked the day they'd lost two brothers to between, and today they were entirely gone. This was real. This was serious. They might... die.

Oh Faranth. They were going to die.

And yet... at least, at the start, everything went just fine. Somehow he kept his anxiety in check, and Iweth was able to focus, and together they made a shockingly decent team, flaming down thread and ducking danger when it threatened.

Perhaps it was because Martirae was upset with herself. Perhaps it was just their inexperience that made it so easy to be so....off. Despite best attempts, things were missed - and Anakumath couldn't help but try to put out the fire that was Martirae's self expectations threatening to burn her down. The ground crew will get it - we can only do better going forward, she soothed, Martirae almost too stubborn to allow it. She needed to berate herself for it.

She needed to be upset with herself for it.

It only burned hotter when another clump of thread was blown into the pair, sending them blinking away - though Martirae's ire could have made it a warm day between at the rate it was riling up.

Hour 4, Roll 12:

She'd never cursed the wind before. But she did now as it caught Anakumath, blowing the young gold out of formation and into more Thread. Martirae hated the wind for not helping and the sky for raining death upon them all and hurting Hers and those they cared for and oh how battered they both were.

They were capable of being better than this, and Martirae put all of the blame of it onto her own shoulders. She was too upset for the embarrassment she should have - and did - feel upon moving into the wrong position to really root itself quite yet.

She could do better. She would do better.

It's a bit of a mixed bag here. To start, your dragon bit his or her tongue while you were feeding them stone and now there's just a constant residual ache in both your mouths. While you've managed to spit flame at the Enemy and char it into dust, you clearly need to work on your firestone toss because you wrenched an arm muscle during your last throw. Ow. To make matters worse, you wound up missing a formation change, and almost had a mid-air collision with a fellow weyrling. [If this is your 3rd time rolling, you take -4 HP from all the tongue-biting and arm wrenching, and quote a Weyrling to take -5HP from damage.]

Of course, then it all began to fall apart. A series of near-misses left Theo once again clinging to Iweth's neck, the bronze himself giving faint creels and hums of worry. Thankfully none of the almost-accidents had been proper accidents, but it left them both wary and on edge, more quick to flame and having to intentionally calm themselves before making any jumps away from danger.

You're suddenly having a moment of panic. This is real. This is too real. You are now face-to-face with the deadly menace that has killed so many. The silver strands wind and twist and reach out for you, and you suddenly find yourself filled with doubt and worry. Can you do this? Why are you up here? What about all those that failed? How can you do this for the rest of your life -- a life that could well be cut short!?! Thankfully, while you are having a moments panic, your dragon seems to know what to do--especially when the lurch to the side and dive to flame down a few patches of Thread. While this doesn't really calm you, and you're still sweating bullets beneath that helmet, you do begin to focus more on sweeping up the Thread. [If your roll this five times or more throughout the course of the game, your Panic will get the best of you and you will panic yourself as you jump Between. You may choose to 1. die and be lost forever 2. appear from Between way off course and take Major Damage -12 HP by jumping right in a nasty clump that you weren't even supposed to be near or 3. appear from Between way off course right in your fellows airspace. Quote a weyrling and give them Major Damage -12 HP for flaming them or startling them into a patch. You in trouble now. Encouragement has no effect on this outcome or counter though you can be saved from damage.]

Feeling worse and worse, it was all Theo could do to hold on to the bronze's neck as the fighting ratcheted up. He could hear other dragons crying out, their riders as well, mingling with the roar of flames and the rush of the wind. Death was suddenly imminent, for them or for someone they loved, and even if somehow they survived, then it would only be for a few days, a week, and then they'd be back... fighting again, and dying. Only a deep rumble and a tight mental grasp from his dragon kept the man from whimpering, the bronze seeming to find strength enough to work double-time to make up for his rider's fears, battling all the harder from want to protect his fearful rider.

Things got heavy, fast! Thread seems to be everywhere, or at least, slipping through more than you thought it would. Is it just your location? Are other weyrlings this unlucky? Your dragon catches some, but not all, of the strands and what's worse, you wind up getting scored in the process! Thankfully, while the damage isn't major it's enough to send a shock of pain through the link. Threadscore: Take -1 Damage from Threadscore. Every time you roll this prompt, the damage goes up +1 as you and your dragon begin to exhaust themselves. Saves can nullify some or all of the damage, but the counter will continue to go up; Encouragement will reset the counter back to -1.

A sliver of pain lanced through the bond from dragon to rider, and it seemed to be just enough to finally snap Theo from his haze of fear. Iweth was hurting, and he needed Theo now to help him... and there was nothing Theo wouldn't do for his dragon. With a monumental force of will, he grappled himself to calm long enough to relay jump coordinates, and with a quick breath they popped forward, shards of the now-frozen thread dusting off the bronze's hide, leaving slender ichor lines behind, dripping from the fresh wound.

8. Everything seemed to be going great. You manage to flame down quite a few clumps, and are even able to show off some impressive aerial displays. Look at how amazing you are! Unfortunately, as a new Threadfighter, you’re finding it a lot more dizzying. Your jumps Between are sloppier than they usually are at drills. If your rider is naturally more nervous or anxious, you will find yourself jumping way outside of formation and wind up in a wingmates airspace. Damage: Quote a wingmate and have them take -5 damage from averting running into you and flying right into a strand of Threadfall

Medigel
@Alque—sorry!

In an effort to regain some ground, to make up for fumbling before, and still not quite thinking as clearly as he could, Theo coaxed Iweth to go faster, move with more agility. They had to clear away the thread, had to make a safe space to fly in... And it worked. Except... well, the spinning and looping was more suited to greens and blues, and Theo simply wasn't as used to pulling such wild moves. Before he knew what was what and who was where, he realized he'd directed Iweth quite wide... and right into one of the bronze's cousin's airspace! "Look out...!"

Faloth veered to avoid a direct hit, but still got himself and his rider scored. Leaping between to kill the Thread, they reappeared and fell back into formation.

What is going on up there? We are getting hit time and time again! the brown broadcast irritably. W'ill pattied Faloth's neck, immediately sorry he let his own anger affect his lifemate. "It's okay, Fal. We'll just do our job ten times better than they are!"

Quote:
9. It’s all the little stuff that is causing you problems! One minute your airspace is clear, another minute you find it full of Thread. Where is your cover!? If you’re a bronze or brown rider, you can’t help but feel that the smaller colors aren’t doing their jobs in trying to keep your dragon safe. Whether it’s actually true, or paranoia from all the stress, you can feel your irritation levels rise. Aren’t you supposed to be on a team and work together? Ugh! Damage -3 HP.

17. You're blooded almost immediately by a large tangle of Thread. You suppose that's why it's called a First Blooding, after all. Damage Roll a D10 to see how much damage you take. The number represents the damage i.e a 4 would mean -4 HP. So long as you're not knocked out by Thread, you're able to keep on fighting, though the pain is much stronger than you'd thought. Thankfully, your able to persevere and continue the fight. While a few more tangles get through, you don't take any further damage, and are able to help char Thread to harmless ash. If you rolled an 8 or higher, you may suffer a bit of trauma from the experience. Perhaps it's the pain or perhaps it's simply fear of getting hit again, but you can feel yourself holding back. What's wrong? Isn't this your sworn duty? Trauma For the duration of Threadfall your damage is lessened by 2 hit points (i.e. If you were to take 3 damage you'd only take 1) but the remaining 2 hit points must be assigned to another weyrling as you didn't sweep up all the Thread out of fear or hesitation and some of it fell through. Quote a weyrling every time you take damage and give them the remaining 2. Encouragement can temporarily ease your trauma for one turn.

Wheeling away from the scene of the near-collision, angling to get back into formation, the pair was so focused that they missed the falling tangle. With a scream Iweth lurched as it dropped onto his flank, Theo gritting his teeth against the pain through their bond. Another leap between brought them back to where they needed to be, as well as shed the biting strands, but what had first been only a small scrape of score was now a proper first blooding, and it certainly shook the both of them up more than it might otherwise have done.
