Khairi rolled his eyes and shot off after her. Why did it always have to be a contest? He grinned.
Hypocrite.
His muscles bunched and stretched as he lenghened his stride and powered forward. Their hooves pounded dry earth and raised dust clouds in the hazy afternoon sky. It was warm, but not too warm on the plains, and he knew the mountains would be cooler. He caught up to Maeve as they reached the first rolling hills at the base of the hill.
Dry grass ripped and folded beneath him; in the spring these hills were emerald, but the summer sun had burnt them to a sullen brown. Ahead the path split, one leading right, deeper into the rolling foothills, the second veering sharply upwards. He chose left.
"This way!" A deep breath, and he hit the slope at a run.

Maeve narrowed her eyes when the stallion caught up to her. What was she thinking? She definitely wasn't the fastest runner, so why had she challenged him? She laughed at herself and shook her head. It was simply her being silly again, challenging someone to some competition that she was sure to lose.
But that didn't matter anyways. All that mattered now was keeping up with him and not falling off of these sharp cliffs that he was leading her up. She wasn't scared or anything, just cautious.
"Alright, I'm right behind you!" she called, snorting slightly as she followed his trail. There was a bit of dust coming up in her face from his footfalls, and she had to keep slowing down to make sure that she didn't fall off. Hopefully, she was still behind him... she couldn't exactly see him through all of this dust.
