Katherine took note of his hesitation mentally, sliding her glasses back onto her face as he gave his admission. She didn't even bat an eyelash. However, she did lean in when he asked her to. Now at that she did, in fact, crack a smirk. The one offending insect he'd pointed at was too small for him to make out it's features, but somehow she could tell if he looked he'd see the bug putting it's dukes up, for lack of better term. She shrugged. That was the long and short of her response to the thought that some poor, confused peasant might think her proper prey for his or her anger. She turned on her heels to get what she'd be taking with her on the trip, leaving the front door with that same annoyingly independent bug crawling back into her hair, and from there into the hive.

The ending to the glorious moment of receiving a head band was beyond embarrassing. Cheeks still red, the poor girl made her way to the academy. Surely some studying would help to lift her feelings away. Besides if she wanted to be placed on a good team then she needed to step up her abilities. Within her class she'd only been middle of the road. While excelling at genjutsu and getting slightly above average marks in genjutsu she was biologically unfit for taijutsu or bukijutsu. Sure she could wield a sword but not in the way other's could. So as it was her genjutsu simply needed to become that much better.
Moving through the academy she made her way to the library. Grabbing a scroll classified as E in rank from the genjutsu section she set about learning of new methods and styles. First up was a series of basic illusions.
Totoko was intrigued by how this technique worked. The basic idea was to hide something via tiny ground bound cloud. It was weird but it also reminded her that the underlying principle of genjutsu was to mask the true goals of the shinobi. [1/1] Kumo Monokage no Jutsu [ Cloud Cover Technique ]
Indeed these basic genjutsu were all rather simple alterations. This next one masked the true words of a sign, letter, or other marking. By doing so false information or directions could be gleaned instead of the truth. Providing an en enemy with false information could certainly be useful. [1/1] Etainoshirenai no Fugou [ Mark of the Unfamiliar ]
Humans were animals, and as such they were highly susceptible to certain animal instincts. This genjutsu relied upon that as it created illusory scents either positive or negative. An enticing aroma or the smell toxicity could be created. Indeed it served a number of functions such as warnings, traps, or even masking ones own scent. [1/1] Dokuji no Kaori [ Scent of Peculiar ]
Another genjutsu could manipulate shadows. Shorter or longer it didn't matter. However much Totoko lacked in physical combat skills she studied just as hard and such knew how distorting shadows could cause a strike to fall short or over extend. Melee combatants relied upon such markers to accurately attack. This would assist her allies in fighting such foes. [1/1] Nirami no Kage [ Shadow Glare ]
The next technique was perfect for her. By casting a genjutsu around oneself she could create an illusion which would create a cloak of concealment. It would create a false depiction of the environment on the opposite side of her. This would of course effectively render her ability. [1/1] Hada no Kamereon [ Chameleon Skin ]
This next technique wasn't very practical but it could be fun. The target would simply see ever changing colors. While distracting she didn't know how useful it would be in battle. [1/1] Saikederikku [ Psychedelic ]
This next genjutsu could serve to be useful against certain opponents. It could also help her be more assertive while talking. In essence the genjutsu would seemingly amplify her voice to louder levels in the ears of her target. [1/1] Hekireki Koe no Jutsu [ Thunder Voice Technique ]
Interfering with the enemy's ability to hear would be another excellent genjutsu for her to know. Particularly if it made them think that their communication equipment wasn't functioning properly. The technique was easy enough to grasp and soon Totoko would be able to move onto learning another. Kuuden [ Static ]
While her shadow manipulation genjutsu would be helpful, directly distorting an enemy's depth perception would be even better. This technique of course did that. However Totoko was careful to note the limitation of it requiring contact with the eyes. It would be good to know both genjutsu. [1/1] Okuyuki Katawa [ Depth Distortion ]
The next technique among these simple applications of genjutsu was also rather useful for a more stealth inclined ninja. It could create false directions of sound. The breadth of this ability extended to from just a single direction to all directions. Quite useful indeed. After a few minutes of study her eyes scanned the text for a new tech. [1/1] Shihouhapou [ All Directions ]
A common theme was developing within this chapter of study. Alter a foes perception to turn their own senses against them. With this technique the range of a foe's vision would be altered so that their periphery became unseen. Aiding in the use of flank attacks this jutsu would serve to further weaken her opponents. [1/1] Shimaru Shikaku [ Closed Sight ]
While not the strongest technique she had seen today, this one had its uses. In effect it would alter the target's perception to Totoko as if her arms were constantly in motion and manifold. This would of course make blocking her strikes harder. A small edge which might assist her in sword combat. [1/1] Konoha-Ryū Yanagi [ Tree Leaf-Style Willow ]
Totoko was amazed by the length of the following techniques name. It was quite the mouthful for something that didn't really seem to do all that much. Still tricking her opponents into thinking a great ball of fire was coming at them would be good. [1/1] Magen: Jigoku Kōka no Jutsu [ Demonic Illusion: Descending Hell Technique ]
Moving onto a different school of genjutsu, this next technique would be good for setting up a perimeter. By priming an object she could set a trap for anyone foolish or unlucky enough to trigger it. The end result would be a very loud clap of thunder which would alert her to the intruder's presence. [1/1] Raimei Wana Fuu [ Thunder Trap Seal ]
Furthering her training the art of confusing and interfering with a foe's action Totoko studied the next technique carefully. Though simple in its use the results could be devastating if used carefully. Simply put the technique created a sense of deja vu in the target. [1/1] Etainoshirenai no Tsuujite [ Through the Unfamiliar ]
With the girl's large ears, perhaps she would hear his boots smacking the ground before he threw the set of wooden double doors open to the academy. Belamos stood in the opening, light streaming in behind him, and glanced across the indoor training area where he had spent many, many, hours. His eyes narrowed upon a pink haired girl with what looked to be like rabbit ears sticking out of her head 'Everyone has got to have a gimmick now-a-days' He thought with a slight sneer on his face. He crossed the distance between them, his eyes locked on her as he moved. Once he got within arms length he stopped and looked down upon her "Who are you?" He asked, the weight of suspicion and authority heavy in his voice. As Belamos stared at the girl, she might begin to notice the smell of the air slightly changing. If she was perceptive, she would detect the distinct smell of smoke as well. If she was really paying attention she might even notice that as Belamos neared, the temperature rose a small amount. Regardless, he stared her down, waiting for an answer

Her studies were suddenly interrupted by a man's personal space invading presence along with the rather stern authoritative voice he addressed her with. Looking up from her scroll with somewhat of a startled look upon her face Totoko scrambled for the 7B patch she had in one of her holsters. "Ta... Totoko of clan Kurena, rookie genin of 7B sir." Nervousness wracked her quiet voice as she withered under his commanding presence. If Belamos knew the region at all he would know the Kurena clan produced ninja known for their skills in in genjutsu. In he knew it well he would also know that those Kurena who possessed eyes like Totoko had a doujutsu kekkei genkai. Either way if he simply looked at what she was reading he could deduce that she was studying genjutsu. What else he gathered from any such knowledge or discoveries would no doubt be up to him.
The ears atop her head were splayed back and away from Belamos. No doubt they were not simply an accessory of fashion choice but made of flesh. While she awaited for the man's reply, Totoko was also chastising herself for not paying attention more. People shouldn't be able to sneak up on her like that, not when she could see every living thing around them. It was a stupid mistake and she needed to do better if she were going to serve with honor in the army of the UHV. She was so pathetic sometimes it made her feel awful. But this was why she was training right? When she was first drafted, it seemed like she'd wash out in a week. But look at her now all graduated and quivering before a scary man! Wait... s**t that wasn't very good. Wasn't the point though, she was a genin now and it was time to grow. "Something I can do to.. to um help you sir?"
Genjutsu. He abhorred genjutsu. It was a trickery of the mind, violating one's most private inner sanctum. He knew how to use it, a bit, but would never do so unless his life was on the line. Still, this girl was a Kurena, and while he had never a member of that family in person he had heard tales of their prowess. However, how this spineless stutterer of a girl managed to pass the Otogakure Academy Graduation Exam was beyond him. What interested him more than her familial ties, was how she responded when he asked her who she was. She immediately held up the 7B patch. Interesting. Could she be a UHV Agent? He couldn't rule out that possibility, or that of her being a simple sympathizer. He would not, could not, correct her until he had garnered her trust. Only Vivian and Katherine knew the plan, and only they because they had helped him write it. If this girl was loyal to the UHV, that would be a problem in the future. For now, he simply narrowed his eyes and crossed his arms "Very well." Walking a few meters away, his spear combusted into existence in his hand. He plucked a scroll off the wall, and tucked it into his pocket before returning to Totoko "Totoko, was it? Who is your sansei? All new Genin are to be evaluated by a superior in order to test for..."He said, looking her up and down "...personality quirks"

Her eyes watched his movements intently, wary of what he might do next. As he looked her up and down coupled with his comments about "personality quirks" a heavy blush appeared across her face. Was he checking her out? She pushed the thought from her mind but her cheeks still felt warm. "Mhm it's Totoko," she stated with a bit more confidence but also still in a rather quiet fashion. Perhaps she was calming down somewhat as the questioning continued. As for her sensei, well that was easy enough. "I had to pass an exam by Takahiro Saito, um he's class B's instructor if you're unfamiliar sir.... say um who are you anyway?" Boy was it a tough exam too. The written test was bad enough but then had to do some field exercises too. Honestly she wasn't sure she was going to pass but by relying on her studies, genjutsu, and her smarts she got the job done. Totoko had definitely earned her place as a gening if that's what he was getting at. Honestly it all left her wondering why this man was asking her so much about it in the first place.
Belamos sat down on one of the benches, placing his back against a pillar and spreading his legs down the length of the bench. He waited until the girl finished, courtesy at least demanded that much. Turning to look at her, the annoyance was plain on his face. He was having fun toying with her, but it seemed that he would have to reveal his cards a bit for she didn't seem to be grasping his line of questions "No, girl, I meant who was the sensai assigned to you when you were given that!" He said, pointing to the Headband and 7B Patch. Letting out a sigh, seemingly of disappointment. He opened his hand up and a flame appeared in his palm. He looked into it and began to absentmindedly swirl the flame around in his grasp "As for who he is, I was more or less seeing if you were paying attention. I am Belamos Karna, Head Jounin of this village and your new teacher" At this he shifted his seating 90 degrees and planted his feet upon the ground "Tell me, why do you want to be a Shinobi?" Her answer would possibly shed some light on her true allegiances. Would she put the village first or the ideals of UHV. He was interested in finding out.

Ears drooping slightly as he called her girl, Totoko looked down at the ground in a rather submissive fashion. "That would be Sgt. Skelly sir..." she murmured quietly. As it was Totoko did not respond well to such aggressive lines of questioning. By the time he revealed himself to be her new instructor Totoko might as well have been punched in the gut. She instantly bowed deeply and upon rising spoke once again. "I'm terribly sorry for being rude sensei, I should have known who you were and addressed you properly from the start. Please forgive me on this front." For the first since they had begun conversing the girl spoke at a normal volume as she delivered the apology. Apparently she was quite confident when it came to apologies at least.
As for his question well for that she also had an answer. "Well um... I didn't at first. I was drafted but um along the way I came to decide that I want to be a kunoichi because I can help others... you know I can make it so that we can live free from the threat of the bigger nations." That was her goal now, to ensure that the major nations would never again trample over those from smaller nations. She was certain of the nobility of this goal and was convinced that she was on the right path.
Oh, what a timid one she was. He would have fun with this girl, of that he was certain. He would have to break her of that timid streak. Snapping up he began to spin his spear in his hand as he talked, pacing back and forth "I do not want to hear any more excuses from you" He said, pointing the tip of the spear to her to punctuate the sentence. Keeping his gaze on the woman, he continued "You have already started off poorly, and as such I will be creating a new rule that you will abide by at all times" He stopped and turned to face her, slamming the butt of his spear on the ground "You will no longer apologize in my presence. Your timidity is unbecoming of a powerful kunoichi and bespeaks weakness that I will not tolerate. I will give you the confidence you lack, and teach you the skills you require to achieve your dreams. In return, I require your obedience" Bringing his hand to his heart, he stamped his spear once more on the ground "You will become a fine shinobi, or perish in the attempt. Either way, eternal glory forever will be yours" Her Genjutsu skills could, feasibly, play an important part of his plans to come. That was a niche he hadn't yet filled, so better to shape her into something useful while she was clay in his hands- weak and malleable. He would turn her into a keystone on which he would build his castle.

Totoko almost audibly gulped as he pointed his spear at her. It really didn't help that he was continuing to berate her and otherwise be mean. "Sa.. sorr... I mean um understood Karna-taichou..." She didn't know about perishing or eternal glory but the confidence with which he spoke of her becoming a fine shinobi certainly made her believe in his ability. It was difficult for her to picture even still however, as their personalities were like polar opposites. One could say that where Belamos was passionate and fiery like the sun, Totoko was distant and reserved like the moon. She did not know of his various plans or goals, but much like the moon Totoko would apparently be pulled into his orbit by the gravity of his desires.
The ears atop her head relaxed a little as she glanced around. There didn't seem to really be anyone else approaching them as of yet so she wondered if more would be joining them or not. Putting the patch she was given back inside its temporary home the girl couldn't help but wonder what was going to come next. If nothing was going on perhaps she should resume her reading? Though it was certainly possible that Belamos had something in mind. "So um Karna-taichou... what's next?"
Belamos resumed his seated position on the bench, keeping his body orientated towards Totoko "We are waiting for your teammates to arrive. The other rabbit girl and that young boy. For now, you may resume your training. I will correct you where I can. Once they arrive, we will begin" He would observe the girl's training and help her where he could. While Genjutsu was not his specialty, basic chakra control was universal.

"Power resides where men believe it resides....
Akura walked to the academy at his normal leisurely pace, he had gotten promoted just recently, he wasn’t in a rush, his mind was elsewhere. What did this mean? Where would the path he had taken lead him? He had no damn clue, but it intrigued him to no end. Who were all the people he saw today? Would he ever see them again? Did they mean anything at the end of the day? With all of that in mind, Akura had managed to take a wrong turn which made him take five more minutes to get to where it was that he had to go, but once inside the training grounds, he saw the girl with the pink hair that had tripped against him, and the man, Belmos, at least, he thought that was the name he heard the man at the office call him. He pressed his hands against the thin, dark, leather vest he had on, and stepped forward. “Sorry.” He said, generally, putting his hand behind his head and letting out an awkward laugh. “I bumped into you earlier and didn’t even try to help you. I was just so excited to get everything sorted out I forgot my manners.” He paused and looked up, clicking his tongue to make a soft sound, and then he added: “The name is Akura, by the way. Pleasure to meet you.”
He then turned to Belamos, and bowed slightly. “Belmos, sir, I’m under the impression that you are to be leading my training from now on.” His voice suddenly sorted itself out, his posture in general sorted itself out, he was standing straight, almost as if he was at attention, waiting orders, his face, which up to the moment had been jovial, celebratory, withered into a neutral, rather serious gesture akin to a scowl, but not quite there, it was missing the angry edge, and almost all of the emotion. “Where do we start?” He then added, after a brief pause, to show his eagerness to get to work. He was playing a game with both of them, showing the two facets of who he was, all at once, part comrade, part subordinate, as every good soldier should. There was a time and a place for both of these faces, for both of these Akuras, and this, he judged, was one of the few moments where their times and places intersected.
Belamos's internal concentration was broken when another of the nameless genin walked in. He quickly introduced himself as Akura and bowed before him. Belamos nodded in return, but kept his seat. It was almost as if the boy was being hard to read, trying to make himself seem as amenable as possible to as many people as he could. This irritated him more than Totoko's blubbering; at least she was honest with him. Belamos stood and approached the man, standing a yard and a half away. He looked the young boy over, feet to forehead. He had a rather displeasing look on his face, like he just ate something sour. Crossing his arms, Belamos sneered back at the boy "You can start by finding a better face to wear when you speak to me" Pacing back and forth in front of the boy, he kept his eyes glued to him "So what's your shtick, huh? What amazing talents do you have that brought you to me today?" He was interested to see how the boy would respond. He had the distinct impression Akura was overly-used to having people like him; having people respect him. Let's see what happens when he does neither.

That made a lot of sense actually. Perhaps it would be the two who she had met at he office... er that the one she met and the one she ran into. Speaking of the devil, he appeared before them and actually opened with an apology. Totoko's ears perked up and seemed to be less afraid now that she realized the giant male was not as frightening as one might first assume. He was rather polite about the whole thing but even still she felt embarrassment over not paying attention to where she was going. "No need to apologize to me Akura... I should have been watching where I was going. Though I thank you for the polite words, my name is Totoko of the Kurena clan. It's a pleasure to meet you." When she finished speaking she bowed though less so than when she was apologizing to Belamos earlier. However it seemed as though their squad leader was far less charitable than she was. Keeping her nose out of it, Totoko returned to studying her genjutsu scroll.
Training
It took her a moment to find her place within the scroll but she was soon back to studying new genjutsu technique. The current paragraph was about utilizing genjutsu to make someone think that they were continuously moving across the same area over and over again. In reality the land does not move at all and the victim remains stationary. [1/1] Mirage Minora
Following that was a rather useful technique regarding phantom clones. They and they weapons they threw would be illusory but a skilled user of genjutsu could make them seem real and cause and enemy to dodge them in an attempt to avoid death. Of course because the clones fix themselves when damaged they could soon wear a foe out and make them ready to be killed or captured. [1/1] Kasumi Juusha no Jutsu [ Mist Servant Technique ]
Continuing on the theme of genjutsu being diversionary, this next technique created a false attack. After vanishing from the target's sight, a false image would appear behind them and charge in for a heart stabbing attack. Noting the required seals and other aspects of the technique she committed the information to memory. [1/1] Hitoshirenu Shikaku no Jutsu [ Hidden Assassin Technique ]
The following technique which Totoko decided to study focused more so on the sense of touch than the others. The victim would think that a great river of mud had swallowed them and was currently drowning them. While they were busy struggling to breath and panicking they'd be sitting ducks for another attack. [1/1] Doro no Gekiryuu [ Raging Rapids of Mud ]
While rather situational this next technique could be rather useful. It would disguise the edge of a cliff to look like it was normal ground. With careful application of battle tactics she could purposely force them to walk onto the false ground. [1/1] Zeppeki Gisou no Jutsu [ Cliff Disguise Technique ]
Since Totoko found the manipulation of shadows to be an interesting method of genjutsu she decided to learn another of them. The trick with this technique was making shadows change to show a different shape. Simple enough. Reading through the technique a couple of times, she quickly memorized it. [1/1] Chouba no Kage [ Shadow Taunt ]
Continuing with her shadow inspired learning Totoko found a technique which would let her create illusory shadows of any shape. In addition to the shape manipulation she could easily hide things within them. Quite the useful technique to add to her arsenal. [1/1] Kagemazeru [ Shadowmeld ]
Not to stop on this tangent of learning, there were plenty more shadow manipulation illusions. This technique was about large scale manipulation to block out light with shadow. The biggest benefit would be depriving targets of their sight. Taking a moment to read the technique through entirely and committing it to memory, Totoko moved on to other techniques. [1/1] Minagiru no Kage [ Shadow Swell ]
Moving onto a different school of genjutsu Totoko dived into learning more genjutsu. This technique would change the appearance of an object and even seemingly give it the function of the new visuals. This could be quite a comical but also useful jutus. Committing it to memory, she moved on to other techniques. [1/1] Kokohi no Jutsu [ False Place Technique ]
Moving onto a much higher ranked technique, Totoko sought out guidance from Belamos. With his advice she was able to get a better picture of how to mold greater levels of chakra which greatly assisted her with learning this genjutsu. The technique itself revolved around making foes hear the voices of their loved ones and friends. The voices would speak to the victim's failures. It would also give them shadowy shapes that remained just out of view. [1/1] Shi kara no Sasayaki [ Whispers from the Dead ]
With how tough that technique was to grasp, Totoko decided to move onto a lower ranked and simpler technique. This one was useful in that she could intimidate weak willed people and even cause others to flinch. Even a small delay in action could be fatal for her foes where her team was concerned. Moving onto her next technique, she read up on the details rather quickly since it was a simple one. It would allow her to manipulate her voice to seem either more or less intimidating. Learning the hand signs was simple enough and soon she would have it all memorized. [1/1] Dokuji no Onsei [ Voice of the Peculiar ]

Chigiri and Kuro showed up at the academy, slightly behind the others as she was trained in the samurai arts, so running up trees and walking on water were still things she hadn't bothered with. Though to make up for lost time, she could body-flicker, but that would be abuse of her power. It's not like her or Kuro were in any hurry to go play introduction with a guy who liked fire and had a personality to match. "We get thrown a hand, and we have to play it, Kuro, so cut the crap when we get there.", she grumbled at the bunny as Chigiri and the black critter entered the training grounds with the rest of the group.
Chigiri had arrived in the middle of Belamos grilling Akura about his specialty and what he was good at. She simply stood near her team-mate and did not speak unless spoken to directly. There was no need to waste words with a man she was unsure of, and that her rabbit disliked. With Chigiri, if Kuro didn't like somebody, that was reason enough to keep them at arms length. Besides...everyone was temporary, Kuro was forever.
