Robby listened to the conversation. It wasn't really like he'd forced her to take him. If she'd said something sooner, he could have ordered less, maybe something not that expensive.
And so, when the woman turned to him, the obese lad was blunt and straightforward. And eating chips. "Nope."

"O-oh." Genie frowned.
"I may have a solution," came a voice from behind. Genie turned to see Cress and her face lit up red, like a light had turned on. That's right, blushing at the speed of light.
"H-hello, M-manager C-cress!" she said.
"Genie, I'll take it from here, thank you," he said and Genie nodded and scurried off.
Cress stepped to the table. "I have a proposition for you," he said as he looked to Robby. Henrietta looked up, saw that he wasn't addressing her and she lowered her eyes.
"If you can win the Striaton badge from this gym you won't have a pay anything. In fact, you'll actually get money for doing it," he said.
A pretty good deal, actually.

Robby took a short moment to think over the proposition. A quick battle, no problems. Alright. "Okay, I'll do it." He took a moment, and then stood up.
Now, had he been in Henrietta's shoes, Robby would have had the luxury of a heart attack. So much of this would be made a lot simpler if he were.

"Great!" Cress said with a smile.
"Henrietta?" he asked.
She looked up at him.
"I would like you to come with us. There's something I wanted to talk about with you when this match is over," he said.
That's right, Kijin had said something about this.
Henrietta nodded and the trio would leave for the arena.
Once there Kijin stood on the other side of the arena from the two. The machine assessed Robby's 'level' so to speak, his trainer card said he'd never won a battle? That made him bottom tier, basically Cress would get his weakest Pokemon to battle.
And the ball came up on the second machine and Cress took it and released Panpour.
This little one looked younger than the rest and squeaked upon being released. It looked around curiously and then settled its eyes on Robby and tilted its head.
"Begin whenever you are ready, please."

And he was standing in an arena. Great. The lad released Bacon. The pig's stomach softly rumbled, though he had eaten breakfast at the center. Like Robby, he needed more. But he was still growing. Robby... well, in a way. But not legitimately.
"Spit at it." The lad's tone was bored, and Bacon complied with a fairly weak ember at the Panpour ahead, while he moved away from his trainer to avoid getting him caught up in this.

The ember attack was fired. A good opener for a beginner.
"Dodge it," Cress said and Panpour complied.
He dodged to the right and the ember exploded uselessly against the far wall of the arena.
"Water gun," Cress said and Panpour complied, firing a water gun at Bacon's legs.

Bacon tried jumping over the watergun before Robby could give an order, but its foot had been caught by the watergun, and it looked unsteady up there.
"Spit!" It was in mid-air, no way the pokemon was gonna get a good hit off.
The angle that he was at, however, had tepig shooting at the ground near Panpour's feet.

"Extinguish the weak thing, rain dance," Cress said.
And the rain came down with the monkey's dance, mitigating the tiny fire ball in the process.
It still hit, but it was basically nothing.
"And work up," he said.
The monkey complied by, well, acting like a hyperactive monkey and this, somehow, upped its physical and special strength.
And Henrietta sighed. Soaking wet again, well, she was burning up only minutes ago.

A short while after Takamaru had been seated, Cilan arrived beside him with a tray balanced in his hand. There was no mistaking it. Based on the order, this was Takamaru's table.
"Let's see, we've got three pokemon food dishes for you today, sir," Cilan counted off as he passed them around the table to their respective types.
"Iron is supposed to raises a pokemon's defensive capabilities. Are you a pokemon trainer?" Cilan asked Takamaru. Of course he was. But it was still customary to ask.

Bacon landed at a bad angle, and slipped down to the ground on his side. He was too hungry for this! Damned trainer hoarded too much... Before Robby could open his mouth, the tepig was rushing towards the opponent.
"Spi- tackle it!" Robby said, covering that the pokemon wasn't really listening.
Bacon was too far for a tackle, though, He had to get in close without being hit by that watergun. In this rain, he'd lose if it hit.

Bacon soared through the air with his tackle and Panpour followed the simple instruction to "ride the piggy."
He was up in the air, over Bacon and grabbing the Pokemon at the neck. His body weight would come down then, to apply gravity to the Pokemon and finally he'd obey the new order of "water gun", aiming for a head shot.

It was over, simple as that... Bacon found himself caught, though he'd heard the order. Before he could even properly act, the monkey had blasted him with a watergun, and the fire type was down...
Robby returned his pokemon, but seemed a little more preoccupied with the soggy bag of chips that he now held. That was ruined. "Er... What now?" He asked, not sure what would happen with this defeat.

And that was two losses and zero wins for the obese lad. Cress smiled, "nothing, thank you," he said as the money was automatically taken from Robby's account.
Cress recalled the Panpour and said, "you may go."

Robby blinked, then let out a sigh. He'd lost, and was free to go. Well, not that he could have helped here. He already hadn't had any money. If he had, he'd not have needed Henrietta...
The obese lad shrugged and left the arena, then the gym/restaurant altogether. So much had happened that it didn't feel like the peaceful breakfast he'd thought it would be.
Some might have been angry or frustrated over the loss, but he hadn't wanted to battle gyms. Being a trainer was by necessity, not choice. He wanted to go be something else somewhere, but a lack of job experience or further education prevented that...
And he was back at the center, so quickly and easily. Why hadn't the lillipup girl mentioned that she didn't have much money? That was pretty dumb. He would have understood if she wanted him to order light or something. Disappointed, but understood. Well, at least the gym leader had been nice. He was out without paying for the food.
The obese lad handed his pokeball over to the nurse and waited standing up. Words were lost on him while he had his short obsession with the day's events. It was just the morning, and already he'd dealt with some excitement. He didn't want excitement. A final sigh escaped, and the obese lad settled to wait for his pokemon to be healed.

"Now, Henrietta," Cress said as he approached and Henrietta looked at him. Robby had lost, she was screwed.
"About last night. I heard Kijin's side of things and Avan's. The stories match up enough that I don't think I need to hear yours, unless you'd like to give it?" he asked.
Henrietta shook her head.
"Your Pokemon was out of control-
"H-he wasn't-
"That's not what I heard."
"Melty was... he was... protecting me."
"From?"
"The other trainer's Pokemon. She attacked me."
"Why?"
"I don't know. Jealously? The guy, Avan? Crown? He called Melty cute and so his Pokemon attacked."
"You?"
"Yes."
"Why not the Pokemon?"
"I-i don't know, maybe it thought that Cr-Avan-
"Crown is fine, he says he prefers that name over the other."
"R-right, Crown, maybe Crown said I was..."
"Cute?"
Henrietta nodded.
"Hm, I don't think so."
Henrietta lowered her head.
So I'm ugly?
"Were you holding Melty?"
Henrietta nodded.
"So you were probably hit because the other Pokemon missed Melty. And then what happened?"
"They started to fight. I got in the middle, I didn't want them to at first."
"Why not?"
"Darumi had.. he'd just lost, I didn't want... And it was a... a silly battle, it wasn't... reasonable, a misunderstanding."
"Huh?"
"Melty, he wanted to attack the other Pokemon. To protect me, or avenge me, I don't know. Pride, it's..."
"You don't make a lot of sense."
"I'm sorry, I don't talk, not a lot, never this much."
"But you don't want the finger pointed at Melty."
Henrietta nodded.
"But he did get out of control," Cress said.
"No. The other Pokemon put me in the line of fire. A hostage, if Melty dodged I would be hit, and I was. It was during the match."
"So the other trainer ordered it?"
"I think.. I can't remember."
"A long night, huh?"
"A long day."
Cress nodded, "right. So you were hit three times?"
Henrietta shook her head, "four, I think, the fourth is fuzzy. The guy, the er, I don't remember his name-
"Kijin."
"Kijin, right, his Steelix got in my way."
"Your way?"
"Melty attacked Crown-
"So he did get out of control?"
"He thought I was in danger, he was fighting fire with fire."
"An eye for an eye, so to speak."
"Y-yes."
"Henrietta, that blast knocked out a Steelix and the shockwave knocked out a Tropius. Just on sheer level of damage, nothing that the Yamask did could equate to what Melty tried."
"I-it was that bad?" Henrietta didn't think Melty was that powerful. Apparently he was a lot stronger than she'd ever given him credit for.
Cress nodded. "Steelix protected you, but you ended up hurt?"
"I was diving to pull Crown to safety."
"Right. So here's what I'll need from you. You need to obtain a Striaton gym badge. That way you can better control Melty," he said.
That made no sense, but Henrietta didn't question it, she merely nodded.
"Thank you, there's one last issue."
Right, the food.
"You'll have to work here to pay it off. A four hour shift should cover everything. Faster if you collect tips," Cress said.
"W-washing dishes?"
"Nope, we're not that mean to cute girls."
So I am cute?
"You'll be a waitress."
"W-w-what?" She couldn't be a waitress! That was a social job! She couldn't, to people, talk to them, be cheery, make eye contact? Impossible!
"I'm afraid you'll have to," Cress said. He placed a hand on Henrietta's shoulder, "don't worry, I'll have you trained first."
Henrietta looked up at Cress and, for a moment, she caught his eyes and his smile, and him soaked in water?
The last thing Henrietta remembered was the burning in her face, a blush. And the world went black.
"Hm," Cress tilted his head to the side. "A curse rests on our family," he said. He'd caught Henrietta. "I'll let you rest first, I suppose," he said and he went off to get her a towel.
