Character: Edalla and Green Moilath

Edalla took her net out, having Moilath to help her into the middle of the ocean. She thought she had thought of everything, as she put the net into the ocean. Unfortunately, she noticed that it seemed to be snagged on something. So she got into the water to get it unstuck, but unfortunately her hand got stuck in it instead. She tried to break free, but was able to do so, sucking in salt water.

Edallamine!Moilath cried out, worry in her thoughts. She swam closer and helped the woman out of the net and then helped her being carried out. Edalla shivered softly as she made it to shore, with help. A sneeze came from her, which did not bode well for her at all.

7) 1-10. You don't know exactly what happened, but somehow you have wound up tangled up in a fishing net, out in the middle of the ocean. You thrash around and try hard to free yourself, but all you wind up doing is breathing in the salt-water. Thankfully, you're fished out by your fellows, untangled from the net, and dragged back to shore. Outside of being a little traumatized, roll a D4 to see what the results of your poor fishing happened to be!
4. You fall ill. Perhaps it was drinking too much saltwater; perhaps it was getting wrapped up in netting and wire, but you find yourself coming down with the sniffles, and then it turns into a full-blown cold. You wind up needing to be a few days in the infirmary, and aren't going to be able to participate for the next next sevenday. [-20 points, and character loses the next sevenday's roll (so skip a week)]

R'bin and Huarangith
Quote:
61-70: You're fishing with a pole today, standing on the small floating dock.
You see the bobber go under, and pull up hard. Sure enough, there's a whopper at the end of the line. It's a fight, and you can tell you've snagged the largest packtail you've ever seen. Unfortunately you yank too hard and the line snaps. Not only is your pole now useless, but the big one gets away.
Worse, your fishing luck the rest of the sevenday seems to follow suit... You wind up with a whole lot of nothin'. -10 points

"Looks like you have a bite," Z'men observed to R'bin. Since he was still recuperating from his own fishing injury, the bluerider couldn't do any actual fishing himself, but he sometimes tagged along during his free time to see if he could help out those riders who were still on the roster, like R'bin.

"I probably just caught the dock," R'bin muttered. He didn't usually mind being with Z'men, whose ability to speak at length on any subject was more amusing than annoying, in R'bin's opinion, and just amazed Eridan, which made him a popular guest in their weyr.

"Don't be depressing," Z'men chided him, moving to the edge of the dock to get a better look at the line. "I think it's a packtail! And it's enormous."

R'bin almost groaned. He'd been trying to catch this packtail for sevendays. It was probably the same fishy b*****d that snapped his pole and sent the brownrider crashing backward onto his butt that time Eri had been with him. He hadn't been seriously hurt - not like Z'men had, when his line snapped - but his tailbone had been sore for a bit and Eri had done increasingly exaggerated impressions of his fall for days following. At any rate, R'bin wanted nothing to do with the fat packtail. He just wanted to fill his bucket and go back to the Weyr.

"Reel it in!" Z'men urged.

"Are you sure you don't want to?" R'bin offered.

Z'men shrugged and held up his bandaged hand. "Still can't feel anything in the fingers. I'd probably snap the pole just because I can't get a feel for the tension. Instead, I will cheer you on."

The bluerider was as good as his word, and came up with increasingly convoluted cheers for R'bin and insults for the packtail as R'bin fought with the fish. This time he tried to be more canny about bringing it in, but just as R'bin had the packtail's fin splashing the surface of the water, he got a little overeager and gave the rod a sharp jerk which turned out to be the wrong choice: the packtail dove suddenly and deeply and the rod cracked a few feet from R'bin's hands. R'bin swore briefly, but bitterly and Z'men swore good-natured and at length, not knowing that the rest of the sevenday would see poor fishing for the brownrider, too.

Bereft of his rod, R'bin decided to call it quits for the day.

Taibbi and Neuwith
Quote:
21-30: Well that didn't go as planned. You thought you were pulling in a whopper, but instead all it turns out to be is an ancient, slimey, and very unsalvageable boot tangled up with some driftwood. There's nothing edible about this--not even any shelled seagrubs. To top it off, any fishing you do the rest of the day will either result in no bites or catches. -15 points

Someone in her wing had told Taibbi that fishing with a rod was the way to go: you could just sit down and do nothing while you waited for some dumb fish to take the bait, and then simply reel it in. That sounded like an excellent way to spend an unseasonably warm afternoon, and so when she went out to do her fishing shift, she'd asked for a rod instead of nets or baskets. Then she'd wandered along the shore until she found a place with relatively few people and settled down to write to her mother.

For a while the bobber at the end of her line just drifted lazily on the surface, with no telltale twitches to indicate something biting at the bait below, but then it began to drift in a definite direction with something resembling determination, if one could ascribe such a human trait to a cork deemed too battered to plug wine anymore. Taibbi kept her eye on the bobber, watching as it dipped beneath the surface of the water and remained there while continuing to tug on the line. It definitely looked like she had a bite.

She set aside her writing supplies and picked up the end of the rod, reeling with caution at first, and then more enthusiasm as it seemed the fish on the other end was stubborn. It took all of her not inconsiderable strength to finally bring the catch in, and even as she dragged it through the little waves lapping at the sand, she knew she would not be boasting of today's catch. There was a truly heinous smelling boot that even the bottom-dwelling sealife had rejected as a home and some slippery driftwood, which actually had a rather pretty shape to it, but Taibbi wasn't feeling artistic or charitable enough to try to make something of it. The rest of the day wasn't much better, though no more slimy boots turned up at least.

Later she would describe the incident in a letter to her mother and make it out to be far more comical than she'd felt at the time.

Csinda and Tijuth

Worse, your fishing luck the rest of the sevenday seems to follow suit... You wind up with a whole lot of nothin'. -10 points

After hearing Z'men telling the story of a wicked packtail dwelling beneath the floating dock, Csinda knew she had to try her luck with it. After all, she and Tijuth had been fantastic at this fishing thing so far. Catching a single fish, even a wily one said to despise dragonriders, ought to be well within her ability.

We haven't done much pole fishing, Tijuth cautioned. Remember what Z'men did to his hand! Don't you dare do the same thing.

Csinda rolled her eyes as she baited her hook and tossed it lazily away from her. Since the packtail hung out beneath the dock, she didn't need to put a lot of effort into casting. She just needed to get the fish's attention, hook it, and bring the prize home to universal acclaim. She could almost taste the packtail already, crisp and salty and delicious.

Sure enough, there was a bite, and when Csinda looked, it was an enormous packtail. Everything was going according to plan. Except the stinking fish stole the bait and swam away. Unacceptable.

Csinda repeated the process of baiting and dropping the line, this time jiggling it so it would dance, even though she already knew she had the packtail's attention.

How do you think it got the bait without being hooked? she mused to Tijuth.

It's an evil fish with unknowable powers of evasion? the green suggested. For every dragonrider it thwarts, it grows bigger and wiser until one day we will have a packtail the size of a wher beneath the dock, snapping up children and threatening dragonets. War will come. The devastation will be widespread. In the end, we will all bow down to the mighty packtail.

You're not even going to let the dragons win? Csinda asked, incredulous. The packtail was tugging on the bait again, this time swimming in circles all around the dock, forcing Csinda to let out more and more line.

This seems like a pretty bad fish, Tijuth replied with the mental equivalent of a shrug. I, for one, welcome our new fishy lord holder.

Csinda snorted and decided it was time to try reeling in her prey. Unfortunately, the packtail had been weaving the line around the dock's supports and had, once again, stolen the bait without being hooked, all unbeknownst to Csinda, who yanked and jerked until her rod broke. Only then did she see the cursed fish swimming a yard or two away from the dock, clearly mocking her. She was more than half-tempted to leap in and punch it. Instead she hurled the broken pieces of her fishing rod like javelins, missing the packtail with both.

"Next time," she swore.

O'len and Brown Aleyath

Despite his familial history with fishercraft, O'len hadn't felt like he'd been of any particular help during all of this, but still he tried, catching fish here and there. When an overexcited bluerider splashed past looking for people to come searching for deepfish with her, he followed at Aleyath's behest. What could go wrong?

Nothing, as it turned out. The group of riders and candidates that followed caught a whole-a** deepfish for the weyr, prompting Aleyath to spend the rest of the afternoon asking when they could go swimming again.

Quote:
31-40: Surely you have a knack for this, for the water is teaming with sea life. Roll a D4 to find out how plentiful your catch is!

4. You head out with a few others to fish the deeper waters, and lo and behold, you successfully return with noneother than a massive deepfish! It was a fight to catch, but outside of being covered in saltwater and seafoam, you're practically a hero! Deepfish! Deepfish! +20 points

If you are a rider, take your two highest stats. Whatever the total is, add those to the points you earn! (4+4= 8 additional points)

Perhaps their luck was continuing to be on the up-and-up. No matter the awful accident but weeks ago, Nonami's luck was utterly booming for a second week in a row. They beamed at the catch, the gleaming silver scales in the bucket was better than nothing, after all.

Quote:
You decide to take a chance not on the water, but by hunting and scavenging on the beach itself. It seems to be successful! +5 points.

While hunting the beach, you you find a newly hatched baby firelizard! The hungry being demands tribute, and you have no choice but to give in! Thankfully, you have a few snacks stashed to ensure this little flit doesn't go hungry. Well, this is an unexpected surprise...

20. Gold

It's far off into the distance, but he sees the commotion. Firelizards, by the vague shape of them, erupting from the ground. Though he'd been busy collecting spiderclaws along the sand, Zi'aso can't help but be curious. Maybe find some wildly colorful shells, or even just to see the wild flits up closer.

What he didn't expect to see was sand shifting and kicking, a baby needing help getting themselves free. He was far from heartless, and lest it possibly between... Crouching down, his fingers combed through the sand to find their prize. As it's finally occuring to him that he can, in fact, find more than just firelizards and possibly something of the tunnelsnake variety, a wing sprays sand into his face, making the man sputter.

The small, plainitive creel caught him off guard, as he stares into the impatient eyes of a little gold firelizard.

Well, that was.

... Well.

He couldn't let it starve, could he?
Fishing a spiderleg out of his bucket, and pocketknife in hand, he snapped the little creature into smaller pieces for the awaiting queen. Guess he had a name to think on.
