The bottom line is that the majority of people who RP are sub-par. Above that are people who can roleplay to a certain and acceptable extent. Above that are people who roleplay pretty well, but even they cannot exemplify a perfect character. Why? Because as hard as it is, any writer (which is what a roleplayer essentially is) cannot help but include their own flaws and characteristics into their characters. Even some of the most arbitrary choices like hair color, personality quirks, and character direction are rooted in baser (and probably subconscious) idealism or desire. So, of course people are going to try and recreate their "ideal" romantic situation through their characters, and the end result (because of their lack of ability) is incredibly cheesy and an incredibly boring read.

Yeah I disagree with that. I think that creating a character from ideals and faults makes the character that much more amazing. Whether the 'romance' is boring to other readers doesn't mean its boring to the writers.

@Haku: I think it's a given that people are going to recreate an "ideal" romantic situation, as those aren't all that common in real life. It's just unfortunate that the recreations end up cheesy.
