The past two weeks had gone by in a blur for Peers. He was finally starting to get used to the city more and he even found himself a job custom making furniture. He enjoyed the work anyway. It wasn’t quite as cathartic as the stuff he built at home, but mind numbing enough that he didn’t feel miserable every waking moment. Yet the drizzle had him feeling a bit under the weather. Not because he disliked the rain itself, but because of it being a warm rain. He knew warm rains in the summer always led to thunderstorms, which he wasn’t thrilled about. Thankfully it was nothing more than a light sprinkling so he was still up to going out and about.

Today the huldra was in the mood for cooking something fancy. Maybe he’d bring Lola over if it turned out good. He wasn’t sure yet what he wanted, but it didn’t take him long to head to the grocery store and just peruse the aisles. He avoided the delhi or anywhere that had meat set out though. Just the sight alone made his stomach churn knowing what it could do to him. So he stuck to the produce, and eventually decided on making something with eggplant for no other reason than they were on sale. He placed a handful in his basket and went down the spices aisle.

That was when he spotted some curry packets on the top shelf. Eggplant curry? That was sure to turn out good, especially since the curry was meant to be premixed and ready after adding one or two ingredients. There was no way he could mess it up. But there was one problem that became evident as he stood right in front of the shelf looking up at it. He was too short. He reached up on his tippy toes, trying to see if he could grab it. Nope, after a few embarrassing moments of his arm sticking up in the air he still couldn’t. Letting out an annoyed sigh he crossed his arms. He was better off trying to find something else but the idea of making it for Lola to enjoy really had him feeling stubborn.
Setting one foot on one of the lower shelves, he was prepared to start climbing to get the dumb curry. He didn’t really care who was around or if he was in the way, he was intent on getting them.

Dyl had woken up to the pitter-patter of light rain outside his windows and was in awe. A summer rain here seemed uncanny on land, but in the sea rain was so common and so unnoticeable. Every place he'd been to on land, rain acted differently. Well, that was probably the wrong way to think of it, as it wasn't really alive. But different countries had different rainstorms along with different people perceiving the rain differently. Did that make sense? Probably not.

Dyl got up and cleaned himself up to start his day. He pulled out the right outfit he assumed would be best to wear out in this gentle summer drizzle. He thought about braiding his hair today, but after brushing it out for about half n' hour, he huffed and simply put it up into a regular ponytail and brush his bangs to the side of his hair. Today was just going to be a casual day, he thought, and then went downstairs into his kitchen to find that he had almost nothing in his fridge. Dyl had gone to the beach yesterday and completely forgot to go shopping. His stomach growled and knew he had to make the trek to the store, or else he would not have dinner tonight. He nodded to himself and sighed, grabbing an umbrella and heading out with his wallet and shopping bag or two.

It took him awhile to get to the store but the rain made the trip bearable. The rain was warm but welcoming, making the streets ooze with the scent of wet asphalt or damp grass. The atmosphere outside seemed relaxed to get the rain through out the warm summer days. He hummed as he walked in with a shopping basket. Bending down to get it, clearly pointed out just how tall he was. Sure he could've use a cart, but he didn't need that many things as he had only himself to feed. But he also didn't want to carry so much back home. He closed the umbrella and browsed throughout the store, random onlookers glancing up to him every once and a while.

He started in the produce section, and grabbed things in bunches of 3-4: three potatoes, four cucumbers, apples, and a few carrots. Thinking about what he could have wanted for dinner, he remembered that Sophia, being the good cook that she is, suggested a recipe for him to follow. Remembering the main ingredient, he knew he didn't have it in his house so, of course, he had to look for it.

Walking down the next aisle, he passed a few spices and prepackaged meals, and then walked behind a small boy with pretty red hair trying to reach for something at the top shelf. Well, he wasn't that short, but he was clearly going to hurt himself climbing on the shelves like that and his mother or father would be upset or concerned if he fell. So Dyl, just wanting to help, scurried around the boy's tail and reached easily for the item at the top shelf and plucked it out of the boy's path. "Here you are, dear..-" he spoke softly, facing the boy, only to discover that this was not a young child, but instead the young man from that spat he witnessed a few weeks back. He glanced at the hair and the tail and was mentally facepalming himself as to how didn't recognize the man before. But that was weeks ago, it was probably unlikely that the man remembered him anyway, so he simply held his smile and offered the package of curry for the handsome red head to take.

The rainy weather was a bit depressing but Mark could deal with it fore the most part, especially since it was apparently supposed to not last for too long in the day so he could just get his daily chores done without much issue. Grocery shopping was without a doubt the number one priority for the young man at this moment since his fridge was beginning to look a bit empty since he'd been putting it off. Mark would pull out his phone as he heard the ringer go off and as usual if was Damen with his daily text which caused him to smile fondly at the screen. The other man had been a huge help and was nothing but supportive of the younger man which was something he genuinely appreciated. Damen was truly becoming someone who Mark trusted wholeheartedly.

'Morning to you too! I'm doing well, just have some chores to do. Grocery shopping and all that stuff, might pick up some more hair dye since mine is starting to wear out'

he informed the other man as he put the phone away just as he stepped into the grocery store before then pulling the hood of his blue jacket down. Mark would quickly grab a basket as he made his way over to the vegetables and began to browse the selection that they had. He needed broccoli, peppers, onions, basil, and a bunch of other greens. Oh and more radish and cabbage, his kimchi was starting to run low so Mark would have to buy a ton of both items so that he could have a long lasting supply. With that Mark began to examine several heads of cabbage before moving onto the radish's. His Mother hated radish, especially when it was in kimchi but something about the fresh peppery taste it brought appealed to Mark quite a bit and so he'd grab several bunches to go along with the cabbages. Oh goodness then he needed more spices as well! Maybe he should get a cart instead.

Hellbent on getting what was on the top shelf, he anchored one hand on the higher shelves to start his climb. Just as he was about to get both feet off the ground he saw a hand reaching over him to take what he was aiming for. At first he thought the person was grabbing it for themselves simply out of impatience. Then as he swiveled his head around to look at who it was, with that very familiar sweet tone of voice entering his ears, he recognized who it was immediately. It honestly wasn’t that hard to remember a super tall guy with really long blond hair. Probably the only guy he’d seen like that.

There was a small clicking that came from his mouth as he flicked his tongue piercing against his teeth. A telltale sign that he was annoyed. His tail swayed behind him to further prove it. With narrowed eyes he retracted himself off the shelves and stood firmly on both feet in front of the man. He swiftly snatched the curry out of his hands and dropped it into his basket. “Don’t call me dear.” Honestly that was his only qualm about the man at present. He didn’t hold a grudge about the cafe so he viewed him as annoying as every other stranger. Which is to say was the most neutral feeling he could have towards someone.

And I didn’t need help.” Peers let out a weak cough to clear his throat, his gaze wandering briefly as he crossed his arms over his chest. “Yeah, uh… Thanks anyway.” There was a slight tinge of pink on his freckled cheeks as he spoke. It may have come off a little snarky, but he actually meant it. Although thanking people wasn’t something he usually did so he was beginning to feel awkward about it. In a very dumb attempt to deflect this he decided to make some very bad small talk. “Guess we’re both running low on food, huh?” Yeah, he wanted to kick himself for that and just hightail it out of there. Sadly he was feeling like he first had to somehow let the man know he didn’t hate him from their previous encounter, but it was highly unlikely the huldra would ever say such a thing out loud.

'Even snow has its layers.'
-Old Halteese saying

Alison Arondight

Alison stared hard at the rib-eye in the meat section. One could be forgiven for thinking she was waiting for it to become a whole cow, or putting a spiteful curse on the meat. However, the simple truth was...

'What am I doing? It's not like I know how to cook this,' she sighed in exasperation, her shoulders drooped and her face defeated. She once tried using Empyrial Privilege to cook. But between prep and the actual act of cooking, her migraines took over well before the dish was in a condition to be served.

Her uncles insisted she learn how to cook. It's cheaper, but more importantly, it's healthier, she could hear her uncle Lancelot say to her.
Alison reached for a pack of rib-eye again, when lightning bolted from her fingertips and flowed into the meat section. She jumped back, clasping her wrist and furiously re-adjusting her bracelets. Friggin' rain, she thought to herself. Messing with her bracelets again, she moved to pick up the rib-eye. Nothing happened this time. She dropped it in her basket, about the only thing she had in there, before moving towards produce.

As Alison walked, she saw someone familiar. She had seen him at the arcade a couple of weeks ago. In fact it was kind of hard to forget. She had never been around someone whom acted so frightened of her. And the end of the day, when he ran outside to say he would see her again before running off, it felt like the beginning of a romance series.
She batted her head when the thought crossed her mind. No, that's not a good idea. There's no way he'd be able to deal with me. Still though...

The whole time she was thinking to herself Alison's body began to move. Much like a cat stalking her prey, she moved as silently as she could, keeping out of his peripheral vision, waiting for him to stop to examine radishes. Getting as close as she could without touching him, she leaned about five inches away from his left ear.

'HEY, MARK.'

After his reaction, she would see his ever-growing basket. 'Oh, you cook?' she asked.

Mark was dusting off the bunches of radishes, putting away the bruised ones in favor of the better quality ones. Soft radishes would completely ruin the kimchi so he needed to make sure they were going to be nice and crisp. As he stood there about to choose several bunches the sudden sound of someone yelling their greetings right behind him caused the young man to practically jump out of his skin. A loud yelp erupted from his throat as he turned around to see the young woman from the Arcade a couple weeks ago. Sudden apprehension gripped him about her presence but he desperately tried to swallow it down. She'd shown that she wasn't an awful person when she sat down to speak to him but still though he felt terribly nervous around the other girl as his gaze quickly averted to the floor as he shakily placed the vegetables in his basket. Mark would then slowly nod his head when she asked if he cooked "Y..yeah...I um..I do..." his gaze would dart all around the store all the while not looking in her general direction for fear of making eye contact with the boisterous girl "I'm a...it's for...making k...kimchi..." he explained about the what he had picked out so far. Mark had only just gotten to two of the vegetables and there was so much more he needed to pick up. Mark would then finally force himself to glance up at her for the first time before quickly glancing away as something registered in his mind at this moment "I..um...I never...g..got your n..name..." he stated rather shyly, as if waiting for her to go off into another tirade of insults or something like before. Mark had forgiven her for before but he still felt terrible apprehension about the entire meeting once again. He genuinely wasn't sure about what to expect from her to be rather honest.

The first thing out of the man’s mouth was a scornful hiss of how not to speak to him. Seems like the other remembered who he was. Although, the other didn’t seem, too angry about it. Still, it felt discouraging.

“Sorry... that’s just how I talk...”, seemed like a poor excuse. Dyl was honestly expecting the man to turn and march away or to start telling him off for butting in. And yet, he thanked Dyl, and even stayed to make small talk, a gesture Dyl thought to be fairly endearing. Why the man was trying to stay and talk, Dyl didn’t understand, but it was certainly helping with that self-doubt he was feeling a minute ago. “I’m glad I could help.” He smiled, and nodded in agreement at the statement about food. His bashfulness and reddened cheeks were kind of cute. But they may also be a form of discomfort, so Dyl had to mentally check himself to refrain from enjoying the man’s shy face.

Facing each other, Dyl took another glance at the other’s tail. He thought at first that this man was like Robin-what was he?- a nekojin? But the man didn’t have cat ears, nor was his tail very cat-like. But still, Dyl was growing curious.
”I think we have met before. But probably not on the most friendliest of terms. I’m Dyl” he spoke sweetly, introducing himself with a friendly smile.

'Even snow has its layers.'

Alison Arondight

Alison had to cover her mouth from his reaction. She found it all so precious, but she didn't want to scare him off again from her constant laughter.

'Kimchi? I don't think I've ever had it,' Alison said to Mark after he explained the contents of his basket. 'I'll bet you're pretty confident in your ability to cook, riiiight?' She leaned into his line of sight, having watched his eyes dart enough times to predict the next place they would land and lining her eyes with that point. 'So what else do you need? I might try making some when I get home.'

When he mentioned that he never got Alison's name, she smiled devilishly at him. 'Hmm? You're right, you didn't.' She swiveled about-face. 'Aannd whose fault is that? Like, you ran off before I could even respond. How very rude of you, Mark.' She looked back to him and reached out, lightly tugging on the rim of his basket. 'C'mon, let's go get your veggies, or whatever.'

As Alison 'softly strong-armed' Mark around the produce area, she kept picking up random vegetables, asking if they would work in a kimchi dish, sometimes what they even were, how to tell good ones from bad ones. All in all the questions asked revealed one important factor; Alison was completely out of her element in a grocery store, much less around food. And yet she kept an overall cheery composition, smiling and nodding at any questions Mark could answer and shrugging to any he couldn't.

When they moved from produce to spices, Alison decided to ask him something that she had been thinking about for a while.
'So, what's a shy guy like you doing in a city famous for finding love?' She asked with no snarky sarcasm in her voice.

When the man admitted that that was just how he talked Peers felt a little uncomfortable. Maybe even a little guilty for snapping at him… No, no he decided he didn’t. It was something about people using such endearing terms as default that put him off. He didn’t like hearing “dear”, “sweetie,” or anything of the like, at least directed towards him. It was too friendly, too intimate coming from a stranger. He averted his gaze again as he responded with a curt, “Well, whatever.” Since the man seemed all sunshine and rainbows he guessed it wasn’t a surprise he talked like that, and he didn’t care to judge him over it.

His fluffy orange tail flickered in agitation behind him as a scowl set in on his face, any hint of a blush gone in an instant. He narrowed his eyes as he made sure to meet the man’s gaze this time. “Just don’t make it a habit,” he blurted out after hearing blondie mention he was happy to help. “I’m not some damsel in distress. I can take care of myself, you know.” So far it was the man’s second time he just waltzed in to help without any provocation. He didn’t want to have the man end up helping every time they met. Although if he could have his way he’d never see him again to spare the awkward chatting.

Peers was quick to notice when he started peeking at his tail. For a brief moment he was expecting the man to press him about being a fox or kitsune. If he dared utter such words then the huldra really would’ve gotten bent out of shape. It was a relief when he didn’t remark about it, instead going on to introduce himself. Normally he despised introductions but he preferred it over potentially being called a fox. “Dyl, huh? Yeah, I remember. You were there when that a*****e treated me like some kind of butler then got me kicked out.” Just thinking about it was making him irritable, which in turn made him sound unpleasant as he said his name. “Just call me Peers.

Mark tried his best to keep his gaze as far away from her's as he could but he'd glance at her for only a moment when she stated that she never had kimchi before "It...um..a staple of..of..Korean kitchens...It's uh..it's basically...fermented v..vegetables.." he tried his best to explain what the dish was to her. He knew that it was certainly not for everyone and was an acquired taste for some but Mark personally loved it. He'd then sheepishly shrugged his shoulders a little bit at her next question, panicking for only a moment when she put herself into his view. Mark could feel his hands begin to shake a little bit as he quickly darted his eyes to another corner of the store just to avoid her gaze "It...um..well...it's just...uh...kimchi..it's...it's not something t..that can..j.just be..made...it's a um...a process" he stated "You um...you need t..to have a..a jarring kit...the t..tools...and it...it takes several d..days" Mark didn't want to try and convince her not to do it but he knew that making what was basically Korea's national dish was not for everyone.

Mark suddenly felt a lump in his throat when she smiled at him like that. Why was she smiling like that!? The young man would feel his cheeks turn pink when she pointed out that he had ran from her that day which caused him to stare down at his shoes in embarrassment, she was right. However instead of giving her name she began to pull him around grabbing every single vegetable asking if it would work in Kimchi. Many of the things that she grabbed would be fine but it wouldn't really be classic kimchi. Mark would give one soft no after another until they finally hit the ginger, which meant that Mark would actually reply with a soft yes which soon enough followed with the daikon radishes. Mark had tried to say exactly what he needed but it seemed that she was mostly speaking over the young man. Instead Mark would quietly explain why many of the vegetables wouldn't work in the dish and tried his hardest to be clear about it. It took much longer than it should have to get through the vegetable section but he was finally done with all the vegetables that he'd need. To say that Mark was caught completely off guard by the question would be an understatement as his grey eyes would widen for a moment before he felt his entire face heat up a bit
"I..I..I...didn't umm.I didn't know..about...." Mark felt his trembling worsen a bit as his nerves began to get the best of him before he took a deep breath. Damen had been helping him with his confidence, he can do this "I...honestly...didn't know about..the um..about Soleil's....reputation..." he reached up with his free hand and rubbed the back of his neck "I only...moved here...because...um...because I...wanted to..get away from...the folks...and..well...I was able t..to afford it..." he explained to the girl as best he could. It was the honest truth, he'd only moved here because the house he bought was cheap and it was far away from his parents "I um..I only actually uh...learned about...Soleil's...romantic....reputation when I was...um...visiting a museum...with...a um...a......friend..." he explained to his companion before he quickly turned his attention to the spices to try and find the one's he needed "Don't...you um..have some..shopping to uh..to do yourself?" he tried to not so subtly veer the conversation away from himself at this moment.

'Ooohh, Shy Guy Marky has a friend? What, did you impress them with your AMAZING kimchi??' she asked in a condescending tone. 'Well, I shouldn't be surprised. You're personality's not like a wall of spikes like mine.' She looked away for a moment, twirling a finger through her blond hair. 'And it's pretty cool you that you have a lot of pride in something, even if you don't seem like it at first.'

Alison looked down at the steak in her basket, literally the only thing there. 'Yeah, I gotta figure out what to do with that.' She looked back to Mark as he was looking at the various spices. 'Hey, why don't you help me pick out the ingredients? I'm sure you'd be able to point out the ones that are like, the most fresh.' She looked over the spices section. 'In return, I'll let you borrow some of my spices.' She began naming off a library of herbs and spices, even mentioning some korean ones. 'My family loves cooking, so I try to stock-up on whatever I remember them using in case they visit. Whaddya say?' Alison named off a few vegetables and some rice, giving the impression that she was making a single dish for today instead of buying for the week.

Mark felt his face heat up more when she teased him about his friendship with Damen. Why did she have to say things like that? Mark's eyes didn't even leave the floor until she spoke about her own personality being less than stellar, at least she knew about it and acknowledged it. He wouldn't speak at first until she spoke about having pride in something which caused Mark to shrug a bit "I..I mean it's um....it's like the...national dish...of Korea so..." he didn't really know where he was going with it. Mark had never been to Korea but his Mother had at least instilled in him a sense of pride in his half Korean blood, even if she went out of her way to tear down his confidence at any chance she and his Father got. Once he commented about her own basket he blinked a little bit in surprise when she spoke and he quickly glanced back down to the floor and shakily nodded his head "I..I can t..try" of course as she began to list of spices and herbs that she had some stuck out to Mark and a couple of them he realized he hadn't seen since he was a child. Soleil was great but it did lack in ethnic food stores which made getting certain things difficult and yet here she was just offering them in return for some help in the kitchen. Mark pondered her offer for a moment before slowly nodding his head ...OK... he quietly agreed to her terms, hoping against hope that this decision wouldn't bite him in the a**. He had forgiven her but the fact that she refused to give her name made things all the more difficult for him to trust her. But if this was the game she wanted to play then he supposed he might as well see what he could do for her. With that Mark would think for a moment, he knew his cooking could sometimes turn out less than attractive looking but he knew it usually tasted good so Mark would quietly begin suggesting different cooking methods to for her as well as different combinations of spices, seasonings, and herbs to see which one's she liked.
