There was a more effective way of battling. To take away the opponent's means of consistent battling. In short, one only had to hit the opponent with an attack that altered them and halted the ability for direct combat.

All it took was taking a single hit.

"Dizzy ray!" Henrietta said and the Confuse Ray would launch, spiraling around the mega drain. The two attacks were once again set up so that one hitting meant the other would. Another eye for an eye situation. Petilil would walk away confused and Melty would slide away hit by the previous move.

It wouldn't be enough to knock him back, and Petilil had already healed most of the damage she'd received.

Henrietta wasn't done yet, though. "Flamethrower!" Henrietta gave the command and the fire would follow the confuse ray attack, made to hit Petilil before she could regain herself and move, assuming she didn't stumble in the process.

And if she did? Well, she'd get hit regardless.

Confuse Ray was useless against Petilil. Her Own Tempo ability made her immune to confusion effects, though Henrietta didn't know that. Wayne held the advantage in having a pokédex which, as the computers did at the gym, flagged up the names of the moves being used in battle. He could be safe in the knowledge that 'Dizzy Ray' wouldn't effect his pokémon.

As Melty reeled back from the Mega Drain attack and prepared to use Flamethrower, Wayne spotted the flame on Melty's head flare up. He immediately cried "Dodge!" to let Petilil know he didn't want her to sit around waiting for more attack orders and she sped off to the side. The attack coming quickly, she was licked by the edges of the Flamethrower's blast, bursting through with her Chlorophyll-enhanced speed. Damaged slightly, but nowhere near as much as a direct hit would've scored.

With Melty currently attacking, he was as open as a martial artist who had fully extended his fist. Aiming to strike quickly "Keep moving! Mega Drain!" Petilil intended to blast Melty from reasonably close range; the fact that he hadn't been knocked back last time meant he wasn't distancing himself. It was an easy aim. By maintaining sideways movement, Petilil protected herself from any changes in direction that Melty might make with his Flamethrower.

Wayne knew to keep up this pace; taking Flamethrower head on would be disastrous. Luckily Melty wouldn't be making any new ones any time soon. Mega Drain was still backed by Growth's power, turning type disadvantage on its head; assuming Melty survived the hit, a good portion of the damage done by the edges of Flamethrower would be reversed.

It ached, and that aggravated Melty. A direct shot made because his trainer was too dense to let him burn through the enemy.

It didn't work? First a trainer immediately heals it, and now Pokemon aren't even effected by it. It seemed the move was coming off as more and more useless.

A direct head on attack wasn't going to work, and the very thought of abusing the ghostly ability to phase through everything frustrated Henrietta. It was a last resort, or an 'I'm going to drag this out for no reason' strategy.

Still, she had a means to dodge. Petilil was fast, but that didn't stop Melty from making any moves.

"Minimize!" Henrietta ordered and Melty would shrink once more, the Mega Drain passing over him. Being a candle, he wasn't very capable of ducking, however this made psuedo-ducking possible. And it opened Petilil up.

The problem with being a reasonably close range was that you put yourself in range for area of effect abilities.

Melty didn't need to turn toward Petilil, instead he followed the command.

"Fire Spin!"

The flames erupted outwards from his body, aiming to roast and trap Petilil inside of the flames. The fierce vortex would place both Pokemon at the center and Melty's candle flame would grow brighter as a grin played across his face.

It didn't take long for Petilil to react. Wayne had kept her moving to make sure that Melty couldn't hit her with attacks she'd dodged by altering the angle they were firing at. Now that was all she had to do to stop Melty's counter attack. He'd dodged downwards by shrinking; in other words, Mega Drain just got a whole lot bigger to him. Harder to leap out of the way of.

Acting quickly, Petilil would bring her Mega Drain downwards as Melty shrunk and aim to crush it into his flame to prevent the Fire Spin from being fired. At the very least the attack would be sent veering off away from her while the twisting grass attack ground into the ghost type, doing less damage than it would've done with a direct hit but still enough to hurt.

Assuming Melty was still not defeated, she'd follow up with Wayne's order of "Back away! Growth!" and put distance between herself and Melty by skidding backwards on the ground, her Chlorophyll speed while boosting her powers with Growth until they reached their upper limits.

If Melty somehow gained a huge space of time in which to move that didn't apply to anyone else and got to fire off his Fire Spin, Petilil would just dodge sideways when his flame flared up and use Growth while circling him.

All he had to do was ramp up the power of the flames. Turn a Fire Spin into a Flame Thrower as the attack tried to ground into him and what you saw was the Mega Drain not hitting him.

But now Petilil had created distance between them. The battle seemed to be dragging out, and for what reason? Immune to dizzy ray, fast enough to dodge no matter how close things got, strong enough to take on Melty head on, and able to heal. It wasn't like she couldn't win, she could.

If she had five hours to kill.

What was the next strategy?

Scary blast, Petilil dodges. Petilil moves in, tries to create an opening, and goes for the finish with Mega Drain. Melty collides Flamethrower with it, and flash fire vs. growth, plus the difference in base damage of the attacks, regardless of who won, neither attack would live through it to actually hurt the other person.

Petilil dodges around to the side before Melty can turn, under the assumption that Melty requires turning to fire, he only needs to to aim. Melty uses Smog, blocks view, mega drain cuts through but misses as Melty minimizes under it. Petilil keeps moving, avoiding anything offensive, Melty destroys mega drain, no openings made.

No attacks hit.

That was basically it, this was going to last for a long, long time. And even if Henrietta did manage to get a hit off, Petilil would simply heal.

A long, long, drawn out match.

Henrietta could feel the start of a headache. She didn't like losing, especially not to Wayne twice. Still, this wasn't going to end if someone didn't end it, and Henrietta didn't want to be here for five hours. She wanted to train, and this wasn't helping. There wasn't any strategy to build here.

So, Henrietta decided to stop it there, instead of calling out the order she said, "can we stop, please?"

Melty looked over at her with an annoyed expression and Henrietta took his ball from her belt.
PostPosted: Thu Apr 28, 2011 12:41 pm

"Huh?" Wayne looked up from the match, frowning as he did before grinning, "Yeah alright. You heard her, Petilil!"

The bulb pokémon managed a look of disappointment. Being able to speed around and cut loose like this was a great stress relief. Even a shrinking violet could be scary if they went all out. No, maybe it was because she was usually so timid that she got such a high out of battling. She stopped with the excessive speed and cut out fighting, doddering to a stop by bouncing dully against the grass and grinding to a halt.

Melty had no way to heal himself but successful attacks were getting to be few and far between. As the grass pokémon scurried over to her trainer, the trainer decided it was best to stop now; as much as he liked battling, he didn't want a Cherry Tap battle. Petilil leapt up and Wayne caught her on the back of his palm and she raced up to his shoulder, peeking out from behind his head.

"Thanks for the battle," Wayne said ritualistically. At least he got a good gauge of Petilil's ability to fight fire types. What he really needed was more techniques for variety. And more power. Some kind of finishing move would be ideal to end matches like this.

He made a double take when he spotted the battle girl in the corner of his eye, almost jumping out of his skin when he spotted her fully: "Wah! Salieri! What're you doing here?" For some reason he felt like he'd been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. With his pants down. At least the lake's wetness constantly confirmed his pants' present location. Squishy. And uncomfortable.

"Th-thanks for the battle."

Henrietta put Melty's ball away and she walked over to the fire/ghost type and picked him up. The flame on his head was fierce and hot, but he was small enough that it didn't matter at the moment. She let him rest on the back of her hand as she held her right hand up, about level with her collar area, where the big bruise still showed.

And she made her way over to Wayne and Salieri but she didn't say anything. She looked from Wayne to Salieri to Petilil and then down at Melty.

Should she go train?

She should probably go train.

But she didn't. Not yet.

The battle was now over. It seemed that while Henrietta had a good set of tactics, Wayne had been training to take on Fire types. “So instead of using a move to take out Fire types, he’s compensating by healing,” Salieri mumbled to herself. She looked down at Chen Zhen, who had learned Dig in order to get over his weakness of Fire types. It was possible for a Pansage to learn Leech Seed, but Salieri wasn’t planning on using the move. Chen Zhen’s battle strategy didn’t revolve around stalling an opponent. It wouldn’t match. “That’s a pretty good defense, I’d say. Wonder what it would be like against a better match up.”

After Wayne had gotten surprised by Salieri’s presence, the Battle Girl grinned. She was right, he did have good concentration. She also noticed his pants were soaked, and it almost looked like he peed. I'll take note of that, Sal told herself, trying to think of a future joke. “I’ve got no reason to stay in Striaton City anymore. The trainers there are too weak for me now that I’ve beaten the gym. Even the trainers in the Dreamyard don’t put up too much of a match.”

“We weren’t going to get stronger there, so we decided to keep moving. And then we heard your battle, so we decided to watch.” Putting one hand on her hip, Salieri gave the trainers a thumbs up of approval. “I didn’t see it all, but it was a good match.” Sal stepped back to see all of her pokemon. “So? What did you guys think?”

“Ya-Pan!” Chen Zhen cheered with a salute to Henrietta and Wayne for a job well done. Characteristic to the silent Pawniard, Liuye Dao merely nodded.

Salem, however, wasn’t even watching the battle. The little brown pokemon was happily chasing her own tail in a circle, having stopped watching shortly after starting. Sal frowned. “C’mon Salem, you have to watch these things. You need to see tactics and strategies in action if you want to learn.”

Salem rolled onto her back in the lush grass on the lakeside, mewing indifferently at Salieri. Moving on while rolling her eyes, Salieri cocked her head over to Henrietta. She remembered where she had seen the trainer before. “Hey, you’re the girl who got in the middle of her gym battle against the blue haired leader, right?”

Salieri wasn't exactly grating, but it did come across as if everything she said was a boast. Probably what happens when confident people speak frankly. Wayne went quiet, wishing he'd stayed on the bank instead of going waist-deep into the lake. He noticed Salem, taking a few seconds to remember the name of the foreign pokémon.

As Salieri addressed Henrietta, Wayne opened up his pokédex and found Eevee's page. Most of the information was locked since he'd not captured an Eevee of his own, though it was mostly movelists; things that'd be more useful to the pokémon's trainers. Still, if the pokédex witnessed a pokémon use an attack, it'd unlock that move on the movelist register for observation.

It was like a game in that sense; see as much as you can, catch everything you can, unlock as much as possible and win a prize! Wayne put the pokédex back, knowing what the other two pokémon were from the top of his head.

Another outgoing person. Henrietta took a slight step back. People were always either angry or happy, mostly happy, it seemed.

No, it was probably just Kijin that was angry. So far Avan, Wayne, Eunmi, Robby and Salieri were the happy types. Even the green haired guy was pretty happy, or so it seemed.

Henrietta nodded slowly. "Y-yeah," she said. This girl had a badge? Then she was outside of Henrietta's league. Henrietta searched the ground with her eyes to find some place to stare at.

It wasn't hard to see that Henrietta was the shy type. Still, Salieri didn't like it when people didn't look her in the eye as they talked to her. She wasn't this timid when she was battling before.

"Training, huh? That's my favorite hobby."

She whistled two notes, one high and one low. Salem snapped to attention and jumped up, landing with catlike grace atop Salieri arm. It looked like Salieri was imitating a Birdkeeper, only without the Flying type.

"That, and battling." Salieri grinned and jabbed her thumb at her chest, stating what was obvious given her trainer class. "Nice to meet you, I'm Salieri Del Forrest of the Del Forrest Dojo. Do you want to train against my Eevee? We could use the practice, and Salem learned a new move I want to try out."

Although Salem had defeated many of the pokemon in the Trainer Academy and the Dreamyard, Salieri still only had her for one day. The two of them needed to be in sync more, like the bond she shared with Chen Zhen and Liuye Dao. The more battles against other trainers, the better.

"Unless you're wiped, that is," she added. Henrietta was the one to end her battle against Wayne, after all. Salieri was the kind of person who would marathon an activity. She didn't understand breaks.

Another battle. Henrietta looked at Melty. He wasn't ready for a full on battle, he had, after all, taken some damage. She looked up at Salieri, looking at her forehead.

That's right, she could still battle, though. She returned Melty and took out Darumi's ball.

She needed to get stronger, so she said, "O-okay."

And she released the Darumaka.

Salieri's eyes narrowed as her challenge was accepted, changing from friendly to competitive quickly. "Alright then. Salem, let's give this a try."

Salem leaped off of Sal's arm and landed onto the ground in front of Darumi, her mouth open in a happy, childlike smile. "Hope you don't mind if I take the first move," she announced as she swiped her hand out to the side for an order. "Salem, awaken your Hidden Power!"

The white tuft around the Eevee's color began to glow, shifting from white to a bright, fiery orange. Salem opened up her mouth, and light began to gather at a single point in front of her. The solar energy formed into one basketball sized orb.

"Vee!" the pokemon cried as the attack began, the orb splitting into five separate, orange balls that shot out at Darumi like missiles. The smaller orbs would spread out wide at first before reconvening at one location: where the Darumaka was standing.

Unfortunately for Salieri, she had no idea as to what type of Hidden Power Salem possessed. While she knew it was powerful, she did not know that it was a Fire type attack that a Darumaka would resist.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 29, 2011 8:01 am

There was one little problem with the whole ordeal, no one had created distance. So, the hidden power was fired at point blank range, this let Henrietta do the same, a guaranteed eye for an eye.

"Angry dance!"

So, as Salem fired Hidden Power Darumi lunged forward, giving Salem no time to recover from firing the attack. Basically, he'd take the hidden power and his Rage would increase, and he would come down with the powered up Rage attack in the form of a fist aimed for the top of Salem's head.

And Henrietta took this time to take a few steps back to give the Pokemon actual room to dodge, now if Wayne and Salieri did the same the two Pokemon would have room to move.

Salem's eyes widened as Darumi basically powered through the attack, and so did Salieri's. "Back!" she ordered to her Eevee as she jumped backwards to give Eevee room.

Salem jumped back like her trainer did, moving her skull out of the way of Darumi's attack as she did so. However, the blow still glanced her cheek, and as she stepped backwards after landing to gain a little more distance she faltered slightly.

Salieri grit her teeth. The Hidden Power had been risky since she only had a vague idea of it's type, but not giving Salem the correct distance to fire had just been a dumb mistake. Thankfully, it could have been worse.

Liuye cocked his head to the side. While Salieri had a tendency for sudden impulses, such a risky move only made her look cocky. Perhaps she was letting the victory over Chili get to her head?

Well now I know that Fire resists Salem's Hidden Power, she thought to herself. Salem only has two offensive moves that are viable, then. Let's not play all of our cards right away.

"Yawn!" Sal commanded, and as Salem got back to a ready stance she began to look bored. The Eevee looked very catlike as she stretched backwards and yawned, hoping to get Darumi to feel drowsy as well.

If Darumi starts to fall asleep, we just need to stall for a moment before we can attack!
