The human heart feels things the eyes cannot see... I'm a writer and I am just disgusted when people try to have a serious conversation, or hand in schoolwork or anything with text talk. I mean, it's called "text" talk for a reason. You use it when texting. I'm appalled, disgusted and offended that they're allowing text talk in schools. Do these places have no respect for the language anymore? I know it has to evolve, but this is just ridiculous! "u" should NEVER replace "you" in the language. It's just...appalling. I can't get over it. I have NO problem with it being used during texting, but anywhere else is just...uncalled for. That's just plain laziness. I can't even stand most posts with text talk in them. If I can't just glance at it and understand it, I see no point in deciphering it further. I may be harsh, but I can't stand text talk anywhere but texting. I even got a phone with a full keyboard so I would have no excuse to use it myself.
Anyway, that's my opinions on it... ...and knows what the mind cannot understand.

Well text talk can indeed be considered lazy. But this is one of the ways that language evolves over time. Text talk is faster and more convenient then writing out whole words, and as our generation grows up with it, it will become more engrained and then it will be engrained in our childrens generation until it is seen as proper english and the way we write now would be considered unneciscarily tedious. Text talk mostly consists of condensing words to make texting faster.
An old example of doing this would be the word "f*ck" which stands for Fornication Under Consent of King which came from back in olden european times people had to get the consent of local lords and kings to have sexual intercourse out of wedlock or to marry in general.

its just plain laziness. it isnt that hard to write out 'why' instead of 'y'. a 2 letter difference. i would give a kid a zero if they text talk on their homework.

"This may sound strange, but I am so pleased to see someone else that knows about that. Unfortunately, most children don't care very much about the truth behind words they use so casually and refuse to accept it anyway. As for text talk, it annoys me greatly, even on here. It is rather amusing that people have a problem with my use of quotation marks, yet hold no issues with malformed words.... That it is being allowed in schools makes me sick to the stomach."

Text talking is meant for talking via cell phone, and occasionally can be used for IMing people. (Because, let's face it, writing paragraphs when you are talking to someone via MSN can get to be a handful typing.)
However, like many of the other users here, I am appalled that they would schools would encourage illiteracy. If I was to hand in a paper with text talk on it in high school, I would get insta' fail'd. Or, at least, given a second chance write it and at least get a very low D.
Colleges are really strict on text talking on their papers, in fact you'd get insta' fail'd and no second chance, as one guy did in our one class for English class, and he pleaded for a better grade, since his school encouraged text talk in their papers. The professor laughed at him and said "How did you get into college then?" And if you use it on a presentation at work, you're only going to get laughed at.
And with the whole, "Well, other schools are encouraging it, so why not" excuse is complete bullshit. mad If the other schools started encouraging students to jump off the Empire State building, would your school follow suit? No. I didn't think so.
Education is important. Don't "txt tlk." Type out and write out your damn words.

That is just sad.... -_- My teacher would never allow us to do that though, and i'm glad she hasn't.
Text talk can get hard to understand, its lazy and unitellegant sounding as well. I hate it when I see it used to much. Now they're allowing it in schools? All I have to say is... wow. Really? neutral
An observation: I think humans are starting to evolove backwards in some ways, becoming less and less complex, slowly, and it is going to begin with our minds. If anybody has read an old book called The Time Machine, you would get where I'm coming from. Technology might have some negative effects in how we grow as a species, it is already affecting how we talk. I might be thinking to far ahead in how stuff like this will afffect humans though. I might sound like an idiot, or a genius to you right now, but oh well. razz
I have spoken...

¢ιηηαмση тσαѕт_ѕayѕ ; text talk is useful in my opinion when your trying to text something very long> However I would be disgusted if someone handed in a paper full of gibberish and text talk My school does not allow it I wouldn't be surprised if a student who has been handing in essays and papers filled with text talk does not how to spell "you" correctly because they forgotten that "u" is text talk and not correct spelling grammar If students keep this up and actually forget how to spell then i wouldnt be surprised at all if they aren't accepted in college or university (unless they accept text talk too!)

Epic Bubblezz The smarter students from other countries get, the worse America students get and the shorter classes are for American students. No child left behind, that's because they're making it so that everyone in America will be stupid! I want to move to a new country to get proper education because America is slowing me down and is giving me a bad name as an American student! Thank you so much for writing this! I agree. There are far to many, far to low standards in America today. All schools care about are just shoving the students through so they can move on to next year, its almost as if nobody cares anymore... My state of Michigan has really though graduation requrements, look some of them up. I think the rest of the nation should adopt many of these policies. I go to a school that doesn't accept anything below a C- as a passing grade, and a few normal classes would be considered AP in other schools. We have a high passing and graduateing rate, so thougher requrements do work. (The only thing that bothers me is the lack of extra courses like earth science and physics and music... its a small charter school, so they have issues with funding... that is the only downside to it though)

Bahaha. Someone did that in my adv. lit class. Ohh, my teacher is a brilliant woman. She took the paper and stuck it up on the overhead and proceeded to instruct the offender to read it out loud. On top of his desk. While txting the paper to his entire contact list. (excluding his boss) Then he had to rewrite the whole thing properly and write a lengthy essay on the detrimental effects of texting on society and education. Then rewrite that entire essay in txt slang. Then had to read both essays in front of the class with hand-out copies (pink, floral scented -- I kid you not) for everyone.
Yeah, I loved that class. We played catch with my water bottle one day.. then volleyball with a blow up beach ball and heads-up 7 up or charades on Fridays and random trivia that had no educational purpose. (hence why we had tons of home work... we never got anything done in class! xD)
