Riley sat at her desk, listening to the soothing sounds of her bubbling aquarium, while she worked on the various homework assignments she'd been saddled with this week. Homework, she found, was one of the better things to do with her time. She had no trouble writing, and the assignments had been mind-numbingly simple so far - with one exception.

"Write a little about what you know of your own culture, and traditions that may be important to you." Ms. Winters had said. Riley had run into a bit of a hurdle with this assignment, as her culture was.. very adamant about secrecy.

She found this was as good a place to start as any and inked her quill to begin.

Riley had been true to her word. As soon as she'd released Aymet and returned to the demon dormitories, she had entered her room, locked the door, and refused to come out for anything. She had taken three showers, but found that none of them left her feeling less dirty for being around humans. She found a nice comfortable spot on her bed, curled up with a book for Literature class, and forced herself to stifle the shudders that raked through her body every so often.

She had been brought up to believe that contact with the human kind before all current knowledge had been fervently assessed, and all weaknesses found and ready to exploit, would mean the end of her kind. If her father knew about this.. if the Elder Brain ever found out..

She was absolutely certain she would be put to death on the spot.

It wasn't easy, hiding personal information from her elders. She had already locked away her emotions over Malodore, keeping them tight and compact in the small personal space of her mind that she refused access to. If they ever knew how strongly she felt about him, she was again, certain to be put to death.

Being put to death was really a catch-all for her hive. And she had done at least four separate things that would give them legitimate reason to perform the execution.

She had once thought, when she first met Malodore, that coming to this Academy would be the making of her. Now she had to come to terms with the probability that it would be the end of her.

She had read the same line in the dreaded book she held, over and over, at least 20 times as her mind wandered to these thoughts. She threw the book against the wall, and growled into the air.

Is everything all right, madam?

The Intellect Devourer toddled closer to the bed, wearing the thrown book on it's head.

I'm sorry. She murmured out to the poor brain, picking the book off it's head and patting it gently.

Think nothing of it, madam. Something troubles you?

Yes, she responded with a sigh. Just.. yes.

Is it something you wish to talk through, madam?

She thought about that, and her eyes flickered down to the brain. They crinkled slightly, before she sat up.

Yes. She responded, and moved to finally leave her room after hours of locking herself in.

The brain shuffled itself around to follow her as she left, though it stopped when it heard the door close. Had she not just said she wanted to talk about it?

Well, really. It huffed indignantly.

((This is posted here because I did not want to interrupt the RP that was still going on in the student office. It will be posted there as soon as possible, but for now it is considered handed in.))

Riley had filled out the forms that very morning. In triplicate, just as she was asked. She hated returning to that dreadful office, but it was only for a split moment - to hand the papers in, and leave as quickly as possible.

Rules were rules. As horrific as they might be.
