well its not that eternality cannon its just to level each one DoS would have to keep changing alignment which isn't easy to do.
Though if you take the level progression as it presents itself. 1 ranger, 2 fighter, 1 monk, 1 barbarian, 1 fist of the forest.
All it means is that DoS cannot level monk any further and will take exp penalties for multiclassing.

Indeed.
A monk must be lawful. If they cease to be lawful, they cannot advance any further in Monk. Same if they multiclass out. So, the second I took a level of something other than monk, I couldn't keep leveling in monk.
A barbarian needs to be anything but lawful, and if a barbarian becomes lawful, they can't gain additional levels or rage. But if the character shifted out of Lawful after the monk level, he was more than capable of leveling as barbarian.
It's all 100% rules legal. I don't intend on taking more levels of monk, so there's nothing to worry about there, either.
The relevant rules quotes are:
SRD: Barbarian
Ex-Barbarians
A barbarian who becomes lawful loses the ability to rage and cannot gain more levels as a barbarian. He retains all the other benefits of the class (damage reduction, fast movement, trap sense, and uncanny dodge).

SRD: Monk
Ex-Monks
A monk who becomes nonlawful cannot gain new levels as a monk but retains all monk abilities.
Like a member of any other class, a monk may be a multiclass character, but multiclass monks face a special restriction. A monk who gains a new class or (if already multiclass) raises another class by a level may never again raise her monk level, though she retains all her monk abilities.
