Mala walked along with the men, although she looked visibly nervous upon seeing how ratty the buildings and people looked in the area. Was it truly such a wise idea to try and find entertainment here of all places? With both her pride and her manners standing in the way, escape was impossible. As they went down the stairs, she began hearing the sound of music and delighted laughter. Perhaps things would not be too terrible...right? ...Right?

Jack silently opened the door and the full blast of lights, laughter and music escaped from the room. A full casino and speakeasy underneath the slums. "Welcome to the Diamond in the Rough." Van said with a grin as he stepped inside next to Mala. "A regular paradise away from the shiny head of society and its ugly underbelly. Unfortunately, I've got a bit of business to attend to, so Lenny here's gonna give ya the full tour, okay?" he said with a cheery smile as he patted his lackey on the shoulder. "But as my personal guest, anything you want is on the house."

Mala glanced towards Van, offering him a friendly smile as he spoke. "Very well." she offered a slight nod in understanding, preffering to avoid thinking about whatever his work might require - as he was a mobster and all. "Thank you very much, Van. I hope whatever business you have here goes well."

"Thanks. Have fun you two~" Van said with a cheery smile before heading off with Jack into some back corner of the club and disappearing into a door marked 'EMPLOYEES ONLY'.

"Well, pick your poison, ma'am." Lenny said as the hint of an amused smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "In the mood for gambling? We got slots, roulettes, and a table for every other basic game of luck. Care for a drink? We've got the bar with the finest selection of alcohol you'll ever taste. Just wanna relax? Boss's even got a stage with quite the musical line up of local singers and jazz artists. The music may not be the latest trend, but the Diamond's got a motif to keep, y'know?" he said as he led Mala around the club, winding through the different tables.

{Why yes, that is a Persona icon thar. (Also, yes, he's my most favoritest character in the game.) Also, is this in modern time or the twenties? *has soemthing planned for either case*}

Mala nodded slightly when appropriate, seeming to take mental notes as Lenny spoke. Of course, being Mala, not all of it would actually sink in until after she got a chance to sit and settle down for a moment or two. She considered relaxing and listening to the musicians play or perhaps playing some of the games currently set out.

And at this point, I'm saying 30s. Because Baccano is an awesome anime and I can't imagine anything but 30s!Van now. XD And because having 30s style gangsters in modern times seems silly to me.))

Lenny continued the tour, happily sharing facts about some of the musicians that were playing or paraphernalia lining the walls when a gunshot suddenly rang out. The entire club fell silent, stopping what they were doing as all eyes were turned on the 'employees only' door that Van had stepped through earlier. Lenny sighed and lowered the brim of his hat. "Oh boy...Wonder how much of the shmuck's gonna come out in tact this time?...." he muttered under his breath while everyone seemed to be holding their breath for what happened next.

Just as Mala realized what kind of vices this place offered, a look of shock and perhaps a little horror found itself upon her features as she heard the gunshot. "Oh goodness gracious, I hope that wasn't what I think it was..." she muttured softly to herself, despite knowing very well otherwise.

((I never fail to lol at the line "Wait...is that a hair on your lip?!" followed by the NPC 'Woman' getting turned into 'Woman?' And if you liked Persona 3, you definitely need to get Persona 4 then. I think the cast is far more humorous and has some even better scenes to offer. ^_^ ))

After what seemed like an eternity of tension and silence, the door burst open. Some horribly beaten man stumbled out and collapsed to the ground in a bloody heap. His face was covered in bruises and was so swollen, it was unlikely he could speak or see very well. "Dumbass...." Van calmly walked out after him, a disturbingly cold expression on his face after the cheery persona he'd previously been wearing. There was a small cut across his cheek from where the bullet managed to graze him and there were a set of brass knuckles on each hand. "If you don't wanna lose your cash, then don't gamble!" he said kicking the man sharply in the side. "Here's another tip, don't try to shoot a man while you're completely bent!" Another sharp kick. "And most importantly...." he bent down to yank him up by the collar of his shirt. "...you sure as hell don't compare me to Clampton in my own damn speakeasy!" he said before giving him one more hard crack across the face and back to the ground for the last time. Van calmly sighed and adjusted his suit once he was done as if nothing happened. "Get 'im outta 'ere, Jack." he said snapping his fingers as he started to walk away from the scene and took off the brass knuckles. "Show's over folks! Carry on! You want entertainment, that's what I got musicians for." he said waving everyone's staring eyes away from him.

Mala could not make the look of horror escape her face as she watched the scene unfold. She was among the first to look away, quietly trying to calm herself before they would speak again. Her heart was racing furiously, not used to seeing others hurt nearly as much as that man was - let alone hearing the firing of bullets. That very fear she felt on the day of her kidnapping returned, if not with the helplessness that came with it. She dearly hoped that Van had no intentions of getting her involved in such...misconduct. Mala promptly mentally slapped herself for being more concerned for her own well being than another's at this point.

"Gimme some hooch. Stiffer the better." Van said taking a seat at the bar as he slipped the brass knuckles into his inner coat pocket. One could easily guess that if there was an item a gangster regularly used, he had it in there. He sighed as he turned to lean against the counter and wiped his trickling cut with his thumb.

Mala froze in place for many moments. What should she do? Should she leave him be and simply enjoy herself? Run away as quickly as she could? For some reason, she also had this unusual urge to approach him and ask of his well being. Or perhaps if this sort of thing happened often in his line of business. It was rather wierd. She truly did not know what to do. Her legs had a better clue, and before she knew it, she was standing right beside Van. Somewhat nervously, she asked, "Well...uhm...you okay?"

"Eh, don't worry 'bout it. Just a scratch." Van said waving away her worries as he reached back to take his drink as he looked back at the bartender. "You see that guy come in here again? You give him the coffin varnish if he looks like he's gonna start somethin' again." he said earning a nod from the barkeep. "Bird was so fried he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with that peashooter." he said taking a sip of his drink.

Mala paled all the more as she heard what Van said about the man he had just beaten. Still feeling indebted to the man, she dared not mention her complaints just yet. Sitting with her perfect posture and her hands in her lap, she really didn't seem to fit such a scene, no matter how one looked at it. "Well, uhm..." Mala looked downward for many moments, feeling rather awkward to say the least. "...I'm thankful his aim was off. I still don't think I've repaid you just yet."

"I told you, you don't owe me anything!" Van said putting the happy-cheery face back on again. "How 'bout this? You keep your lips sealed about this place, and we're good."
